Sony ‘trade up’ program gets you $500 plus trade-in value towards a new a9

15 Aug

Switching brands is a painful and expensive process, but a new “trade up” promotion from Sony is trying to take a little bit of the sting away. For a limited time, people interested in stepping up to a Sony a7 II, Sony a7S II, Sony a7R II, or Sony a9 can get several hundreds of dollars in credit + trade-in value when they hand over their working DSLR or mirrorless camera.

These kinds of trade-in programs are not uncommon in the photo world, but we’re more accustomed to seeing them from brands like Hasselblad and Leica, where the price tag for upgrading from one model to the next is so high that a significant discount for trading in your older camera is a serious boon.

Sony’s promotion isn’t quite as intense, but trading in an eligible DSLR or mirrorless will snag you $ 500 + trade-in value towards a new a9, $ 300 + trade-in value towards an a7R II and a7S II, and $ 100 + trade-in value towards a new a7 II. What’s more, these discounts are being offered in parallel with instant-rebates of up to $ 200 on the same cameras.

If you’re looking for an a9, there is a (long) list of eligible cameras that will earn you that $ 500 bonus; however, if you’re interested in an a7 II, a7S II, or a7R II, “any working digital interchangeable lens camera” is acceptable. To learn more or take advantage of the program, read the press release below or head over to the trade up website at this link.

The ‘trade up’ promotion runs from August 13th through September 30th.

Nikon marks 100th anniversary with new scholarship program

27 Jul

Nikon is marking its 100th anniversary in many ways, including the creation of a new scholarship program for ‘future visual creators’ in the USA and Canada.

The scholarship will consist of two programs: ‘The Nikon Storytellers Scholarship’ will award ten college students with academic scholarships of $ 10,000. In addition, Nikon will identify rising stars on digital platforms and recognize them as a part of a curated ‘Nikon100 List.’

Criteria for consideration will be announced later this year, and submissions will be reviewed, selected and awarded prior to the 2018-2019 school year.

Press Release:

NIKON INC. CELEBRATES 100TH ANNIVERSARY WITH SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FOR FUTURE VISUAL CREATORS AND PLANS TO RECOGNIZE UP-AND-COMING PHOTOGRAPHERS TO NEW #NIKON100 LIST

Imaging Leader Allocates $ 100,000 in Scholarship Funds to invest in Next Generation of Students Pursuing Photography, Film, Journalism, Visual and Fine Arts Degrees

NEW YORK, NY (July 27, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. EDT) – Today, Nikon Inc. announced two new programs to recognize and support the next generation of visual creators. “The Nikon Storytellers Scholarship” will award ten college students with academic scholarships of $ 10,000. Additionally, Nikon Inc. will identify rising stars on digital platforms and recognize them as a part of the curated “Nikon100 List.”

“For the past 100 years, Nikon has been at the forefront of optical innovation and exploration,” said Kosuke Kawaura, Director; Marketing, Communications & Planning, Nikon Inc. “We have never been more excited about the future of imaging and are committed to supporting the next generation of photographers and creators that are eager to capture and share their world.”

This fall, Nikon will announce the criteria for students throughout the United States and Canada to be considered for the scholarship program. Submissions will be reviewed, selected and awarded prior to the 2018-2019 school year. Recognizing the value of education and creative collaboration, Nikon is using their 100th Anniversary milestone to celebrate current and future creators.

“Nikon understands the dedication it takes to pursue and become successful in creative fields, and we are honored to play a role in supporting students’ achievement in academic excellence,” added Kawaura.

In addition to the scholarship, Nikon will identify and curate a list of rising stars in photography. The “#Nikon100 List” will identify photographers on Instagram that are creating inspiring work and telling amazing stories. Throughout the 100-day campaign, Nikon will highlight one new photographer to follow each day and will share that individuals’ photos on the Nikon Instagram channel with hashtag #Nikon100.

Nikon has also been teaching photographers of all levels for over 30 years through their Nikon School program which offers online and offline courses.

Students interested in the Nikon Storytellers Scholarship and those looking to learn more about the “#Nikon100 List” can follow Nikon on Instagram , Facebook, Twitter or Snapchat (@NikonUSASnap) or visit http://www.nikonusa.com this fall for more details.

GoPro launches camera trade-up program in the US

11 Apr

Action-camera manufacturer GoPro has launched a trade-up program for its US-customers. Existing GoPro owners can receive $ 100 off a new HERO5 Black, or $ 50 off a HERO5 Session when they trade in any older GoPro HERO model.

To participate in the program you should visit the Trade-up website, select the new camera of your choice, and follow instructions to return your old camera. Once GoPro has received the latter, it will process the discount and send you a brand-new HERO5 Black or HERO5 Session camera.  The company says returned cameras will be recycled responsibly via zero landfill and recycling methods appropriate to material type.

“Our HERO5 cameras are the best we’ve ever made. And when paired with GoPro’s new software, they unlock the simplest, most powerful mobile storytelling solution yet,” said CJ Prober, GoPro’s Chief Operating Officer. “Our Trade-Up Program allows us to introduce existing customers to the modern GoPro experience and prepare our community for the new software enhancements ahead.”

The HERO5 Black and HERO5 Session currently retail for $ 399.99 and $ 299.99, so the trade-in discount can cut a nice chunk from that. If you own an older GoPro and like the idea of trading it in, you can find all the information on the GoPro website.

Kano Camera Kit lets anyone build and program their own camera

29 Sep

Kano, a maker of DIY educational tools, is seeking crowdfunding for a trio of DIY project kits, one of which is its new educational Camera Kit. The Camera Kit enables anyone to build a simple camera and then program it with various functions using drag-and-drop code, the goal being to impart an overall knowledge of how cameras and their related software work.

The camera is assembled from pre-made parts using an included instructional ‘storybook.’ DIYers can choose which lens they want to use — a macro, fisheye, or wide-angle — and can add both a flash and a trigger. The Camera Kit also includes a Tripwire Sensor which, when added, emits an infrared beam. If someone or something moves through the beam, the camera will snap a picture.

Various functions can be added via the programming software, including features like triggering photos via sound using an integrated microphone, adding real-time data to photos like the current weather, and more. The software also enables users to create their own photo filters.

Overall, the Camera Kit features the camera ‘brain,’ an LED ring flash, tripwire sensor, mode dial, lenses, viewfinder, battery, charging cable, tripod, lanyard, camera case, storybook and stickers.

The Camera Kit is one of three project kits Kano is seeking funding for on Kickstarter. As with the other two kits, the Camera Kit is offered as a $ 99 pledge, with estimated retail cost being $ 129.99. Kano anticipates shipping its Camera Kit to backers in March 2017.

Flickr Marketplace image licensing program shuttered

24 Sep

Flickr Marketplace, the property’s image licensing service, is being shuttered, with the company citing feedback about subpar service as the reason. Per the email being sent to existing Marketplace licensing program users, the full shutdown will take place over the next few months, with appropriate royalties still being paid out to contributors during that time.

Flickr confirmed to TechCrunch that the email is legitimate. In it, the company encourages users to complete an included survey that ‘could help shape possible decisions for any licensing opportunities in the future.’ However, no future plans have been stated, and Flickr Marketplace is effectively closed.

Leica expands ‘a la carte’ program to allow customers to customize the M Monochrom

25 Jun
The Leica M Monochrom (Typ 246) shown in cement leather and silver chrome

Leica has announced that its M Monochrom (Typ 246) will now become part of the company’s ‘a la carte’ program, where photographers can choose a range of custom options to personalize their camera. The M Monochrom has only been available in a discrete black chrome finish until now, with black leather and no traditional Leica red dot in case it attracted unwanted attention. Now that the camera is in the a la carte program a polished silver chrome version will be available as well as black laquer, and the leather finish can be chosen from 10 different colours including shades of red, blue, green and brown.

The service also allows users to decide if they want the image field selector lever that previews the effects of different focal lengths (it costs more to have it removed), to choose between Gorilla and sapphire glass on the LCD, and a choice of color for the strap to match or complement the color of the body. Users can also request no engraving on the camera’s top plate, or indeed request their own lettering or signature for the top plate and/or the camera’s rear.

The customization can add over £1000 to the cost of the body on top of a charge of £840 for the service. Leica has created a simulator so that users can choose their options online, and Leica stores will also offer the service. For more information visit the Leica Camera website.

Press release:

Made to measure: Leica M Monochrom à la carte

Leica à la carte programme extended with the addition of the Leica M Monochrom, with silver chrome finish available for the first time

Leica Camera has today announced that its successful Leica M à la carte camera personalisation programme has been expanded with the addition of the Leica M Monochrom, bringing the entire portfolio of bespoke options to this special digital rangefinder model.

The Leica M Monochrom, which incorporates a unique black and white sensor, can now be ordered with a multitude of tailored features, including a choice of classic black chrome or black paint body. Furthermore, for the first time and exclusively via the à la carte programme, customers can also select the camera body in a stunning silver chrome finish.

Among the custom options are a top plate with – or without – the iconic Leica ‘red dot’ logo on the front, and an extensive collection of leather trims, from classic black to subtle shades to rich, eye-catching colours such as khaki, red or deep blue.

For the ultimate personal touch, the Leica M Monochrom à la carte can be delivered with fine engraving on the top surface and rear of the top plate. Meticulously hand-crafted in Germany, each camera can be transformed into a personal ‘object of desire’ – a unique and unmistakeable example of precision and quality – with the application of its owner’s signature, custom text or special markings.

An array of high quality camera carrying straps completes the Leica M à la carte portfolio, in colours and materials to match those chosen for the camera’s leather trim.

Allowing the simulation of all possible variations, and selection of the final combination chosen by the customer, an online configurator is available now on the Leica website at uk.leica-camera.com. Orders for the personalised Leica M Monochrom à la carte camera can be placed via official Leica Stores and Boutiques, where customers are able to view a variety of samples, illustrating the full range of options offered by the programme.

Ilford Photo announces ordering program for unusual sizes of sheet film

01 Apr

UK film manufacturer Harman Technologies has announced that orders are being taken for unusual sheet and roll film sizes in its annual program for supplying low volume and custom-sized Ilford Photo materials for vintage and large format camera owners. Rather than making odd sizes on the chance that they will sell, the company uses it Ultra Large Format (ULF) program to collect orders from the public and institutions through specified retailers and sets aside time especially to produce film to fit old cameras.

The company offers these odd sizes in Ilford FP4 Plus, HP5 Plus and Delta 100 Professional black and white emulsions. Sheet materials as large as 20 x 24in. and as small as 2.25 x 3.25in. are on offer, as well as roll film in 46mm (127 film) and 70mm widths. Sheet sized film is also available in rolls for users to cut themselves, and can be ordered in widths of up to 20in (x 50ft). Some sizes have no minimum order volumes and can be ordered as a single box.

For information on which films and sizes are available, and through which retailers, see the Ilford Ultra Large Format information sheet (pdf). Orders must be placed by Friday 27th May 2016.

Press release:

ILFORD PHOTO ULF, CUSTOM & SPECIALIST FILM MANUFACTURE 2016

Buoyed by the fantastic response from the film photography community around the world, HARMAN technology Limited are delighted to be offering film photographers the opportunity to place orders for a range of specialist film products for the 11th consecutive year.

With the continued revival in film photography, it is vital to have film available for photographers using ultra large format alongside previously popular film formats for antique and collectable cameras.

By consolidating orders HARMAN technology can supply products that would not normally be viable to manufacture.

“This program enables us to further support the world of film photography that uses and values our conventional products” said Giles Branthwaite, Director of Sales and Marketing at Harman technology. “Through running the ULF program each year, we are able to satisfy the strong demand for specialist film formats. Whilst manufacture is not easy, we have been rewarded by increased demand year on year ensuring we will continue to address and care for this market.”

Films available for this year are ILFORD FP4 PLUS, HP5 PLUS, and DELTA 100 PROFESSIONAL. Not all films are available in all formats.

For a full list of the 2016 items and participating dealers visit:
http://www.ilfordphoto.com/ulf

The options available reflect what has been asked for over the past 10 years. HARMAN is happy to consider any other size suggestions but do not guarantee to make them available.
For sheet sizes an order for just one single box can be made, but for roll sizes this is not possible due to potentially excessive waste. Please see the minimums and multiples required next to the appropriate roll size.

Note:
Orders must be placed with the listed ULF reseller partners no later than Friday 27th May.

The UK factory will start to ship orders to Distributors during August and end users should check with the local ULF reseller for expected arrival dates.
