Sony has patented the design of a series of bright zoom lenses, including a roughly F1.8-2.8 lens that would give 28-100mm equivalent coverage on a 1″-type sensor. The designs suggest the company intends to further develop its RX range of compacts. While other gadgets have gotten smaller and more streamlined, printers have generally remained space-hogging behemoths. Seemingly ignored in the quest to make computers and their accessories compact and ultra-efficient, most modern-day printers look like relics of the circa-2000, oversized beige PC era. One new concept aims to challenge that with a tiny mobile design that moves across paper of any size like a Roomba.
The Mini Mobile Robotic Printer makes it possible to take printing capabilities on the go with you along with your laptop, cell phone and other mobile devices. It prints from any device, including phones, and isn’t constrained by the paper size accepted by a conventional printer. It consists of a printhead on a set of small wheels that travels across a sheet of paper to print. An omni-wheel system enables the printer to turn in any direction.
Powered by a battery that can be recharged via USB, the Mini Mobile Robotic Printer has a small inkjet that lasts over 1,000 printed pages. Once charged, the battery gets an hour of printing time. While the first version will be grayscale only, Jerusalem-based ZUtA Labs aims to create a color version in the future.
Measuring just over 4.5 inches in length, the printer connects to gadgets wirelessly via Bluetooth. A Kickstarter campaign is currently raising production funds, and the first printers will go out to backers of the project in January 2015.
Concept designs that use coffee dregs or pencil stubs instead of ink, forgo paper altogether or even produce 3D objects bring printers into the 21st century.

Metabones has introduced two new versions of its Nikon-F to Micro Four Thirds mount Speed Booster adapters. This time they are designed specifically for the Blackmagic Cinema and Pocket Cinema cameras. Blackmagic Design has announced its Camera 1.5 software update which adds new 12-bit Log CinemaDNG RAW recording to the Pocket Cinema Camera. The CinemaDNG Raw lossless compression works like a ZIP file where the Raw files are compressed during 1080p recording without the loss of any part of the image. This allows videographers to capture files with wider dynamic range for increased flexibility during color correction.

Whereas the rate of change in the still camera industry seems to have reached something of a plateau, video is rife with developments. A small Australian company called Black Magic has just started shipping the Blackmagic Pocket Cinea Camera which is shaking up the video marketplace.
I have just spent the past week working in the field with it and my review is now online. Also published today is an article titled The Making of Algonquin Autumn, which describes the process of making a short film with the BMPCC over this past weekend.

Blackmagic Designs has announced it is shipping its Raw-video-shooting Pocket Cinema Camera and is reducing the price of its original, larger Cinema Camera. The Pocket Cinema Camera is built around a ‘Super 16mm’ sized sensor (12.5 x 7mm) and can shoot Apple ProRes 422 (HQ) or lossless compressed CinemaDNG 1080 footage at 23.99, 24, 25, 29.97 or 30p. Meanwhile the company has knocked $ 1,000 off the price of its original, 2.5K resolution Raw-shooting Cinema Camera model.
