DJI announces the Mavic Air 2 with 4K/60p capture, ActiveTrack 3.0 and more

DJI has announced the Mavic Air 2, the newest compact, folding drone in DJI’s growing lineup. In addition to new hardware, both inside and out, the drone also features new fly modes for simplifying the flight process.

At the heart of the Mavic Air 2 is a 48MP 1/2” Quad Bayer CMOS sensor that’s capable of recording 4K video at up to 60 frames per second (fps) with a 120Mbps data rate. When dropped down to 4K/30p, the Mavic Air 2 can record HDR video while a slow-motion mode can max out at 240 fps when shooting at 1080p. DJI has also included a new Hyperlapse feature that will result in 8K video using one of four flight modes: Free Movement, Circle, CourseLock and WayPoints. This isn’t the true 8K capture the Autel EVO II drone has promised, but it is 8K and we’re still yet to see the EVO II hit the market.

On the stills front, the Mavic Air 2 can capture 12MP stills with a special 48MP supersampling option that uses the drone’s three-axis gimbal to help compensate for movement in-between frames. A new ‘SmartPhoto’ capture mode will also snap 12MP stills using one of three image capture options that DJI says uses ‘advanced scene analysis and deep learning to automatically choose one of [the shooting modes].’

The first of the three shooting modes is HDR, which will snap seven photos at various exposures and merge them together to optimize the dynamic range in an image; the second mode is Hyperlight, which is a low-light mode that will take multiple photos and merge them together to create a single image with less noise than would be possible with a single image; the third and final mode is the ‘Scene Recognition’ mode that will automatically analyze the scene and select from one of five presets (sunsets, blue skies, grass, snow, and trees) to apply to the image to bring out the best of the scenery.

DJI is using new motors and electronic speed controllers (ESCs) in combination with improved battery technology to offer up a maximum flight time of 34 minutes on a single charge. This benchmark is also helped by a more aerodynamic design and lighter weight, with the device weighing just 570g (1.26lbs).

Transmitting live video from the drone to a mobile device is done with DJI’s OcuSync 2.0 protocol, which has been updated to support both 2.4GHz and 5.8GHz frequency bands, as well as an auto-switching feature, to offer a maximum range of 10km (6.21 miles) when unobstructed. Also included in the Mavic Air 2 is Advanced Pilot Assistance System (APAS) 3.0, which is a new obstacle avoidance technology that will recognize when an object is in the drone’s flight path and reroute the drone accordingly. DJI says this new version uses 3D mapping to ‘[aid] in smooth transitions and more fluid movements around objects even in highly complex environments.’

AirSense technology has also been included, which uses ADS-B aviation technology to help warn drone pilots of other nearby aircraft by displaying messages on the pilot’s screen, making sounds and vibrating with compatible mobile devices. DJI does note though that due to supply chain shortages caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, only Mavic Air 2 units sold in North America will feature the ADS-B transponder; units sold in other regions will be identical in every other regard. No timeframe is given as to when this discrepancy between units could change.

The Mavic Air 2 also features a number of AI-powered features, including ActiveTrack 3.0, Point of Interest 3.0 and Spotlight 2.0. Below is a breakdown from DJI explaining each of the three modes:

  • ActiveTrack 3.0: Select a subject for Mavic Air 2 to automatically follow. The third iteration of ActiveTrack uses state-of-the-art mapping technology and new flight path algorithms to offer improved subject tracking and obstacle avoidance, along with the ability to quickly re-engage the subject if it temporarily moves behind an object.
  • Point of Interest 3.0: Set an automated flight path around a specific subject. The updated iteration improves surface recognition to better dynamically track subjects.
  • Spotlight 2.0: Found in professional DJI drones, Spotlight locks a subject in the frame while the user has free operation of the drone’s movement.

The Mavic Air 2 will be made available in China starting today, while other regions should see the first units hitting store shelves in mid-May for $ 799. This ‘standard’ kit will include the Mavic Air 2, one battery, the remote controller and all necessary cables. A new Fly More option, which will include everything in the standard version as well as a shoulder bag, ND filters, a charging hub and three additional batteries, will retail for $ 988. DJI releases ‘GEO zone’ firmware update for the Mavic Mini

When DJI announced the Mavic Mini, its 249-gram drone that doesn’t require registration (unless used for commercial purposes), the general public was disappointed with the fact that it was missing some important features. One of those was the inability to unlock GEO Zones. Right in time for the New Year, DJI has released its latest firmware update, v01.00.0400, which also includes two important safety features.

The latest firmware update for v1.0.4, or later, of the iOS and Android version of the DJI Fly app now allows you to unlock GEO Zones. DJI also added in a feature that prevents you from taking off when the GPS signal is weak (GPS <8) and the environment light is too weak to safely operate the aircraft. This feature has been missing from all previous firmware updates, including those created for the DJI GO app, and will hopefully be implemented there, as well, going forward.

Another pertinent safety update is the requirement for compass calibration before takeoff if environment light is not sufficient or if the compass experiences magnetic interference. The latter is a leading cause of flyaways. The Mavic Mini is an entry-level drone that appeals to beginners who are especially susceptible to losing a drone. Anyone who remembers the disaster that took place in Las Vegas, when a drone flew off and landed on an airport runway, will appreciate this feature. To properly calibrate a compass, make sure you do so in an area absent of any magnetic interference.

A few other new features in the firmware update include:

  • Adjusted flight altitude and distance in payload mode.
  • Added warning prompt for battery cycles.
  • Reduced noise during self-diagnostics after powering on.
  • Fixed issue: linking was abnormal in some regions.

DJI has also noted that ‘the update may reset various main controller settings, such as the RTH altitude and the maximum flight distance, to default settings. Before updating, take note of your preferred DJI Fly settings, and readjust them after the update.’ If the update fails, it is recommended that users restart the aircraft, remote controller, and DJI Fly or DJI Assistant 2 for Mavic, and retry.

Red Zones are Restricted Zones. Users will be prompted with a warning and the flight won’t be authorized. Anyone who believes they have permission to operate in a Restricted Zone has to contact flysafe@dji.com or go through the Online Unlocking portal on DJI’s Fly Safe site.

When it comes to GEO Zones, unlocking a low-risk area requires a few taps or clicks. High-risk zones require prior approval, along with proof of credentials, and can’t be accessed within the Fly app. Basically, don’t attempt to unlock a high-risk or Red Zone, especially in close proximity to an airport, unless you know what you’re doing. Tiffen announces ND filter kits for the DJI Mavic Mini drone

When I initially reviewed DJI’s Mavic Mini drone, a week before it was released to the public, one of my first impressions was that there wasn’t any clear way to attach a neutral-density (ND) filter onto the lens of its camera. DJI has always offered up its own branded set of ND filters for every drone or action camera they’ve released. Therefore, it was surprising when they were absent from the accessories section for the Mini.

Gear of the Year 2019 – Dan’s choice: DJI Mavic Mini

A lot of awesome gear arrived on the scene in 2019 including plenty of ground-breaking and impressive cameras, lenses and accessories. But of all the releases, there was only one piece of gear I purchased for myself to enjoy outside of work: The DJI Mavic Mini.

Back in 2016 I picked the original DJI Mavic Pro as my gear of the year because I felt it represented a turning point in the drone market. It was the first mid-level unit that seemed to offer everything I wanted: a folding design, good stills/video, a user-friendly interface and a reasonably affordable price. It was a product I threw down my own money for and one that opened my eyes to a new way of creating stills and video.

There was only one piece of gear I purchased for myself this year: The DJI Mavic Mini

But three years on and my Mavic Pro is starting to seem, well, old. While the folding design was unique at launch, the drone itself now feels hefty in comparison to many newer models. This has made me less likely to take it along on trips or adventures, unless I’m certain I’ll be using it. And though the image quality from its 1/2.3″ sensor is still largely good enough for my needs, I find the JPEG profiles unappealing and the Raw files lack malleability. It also doesn’t help that several ‘oh crap’ moments have now led the camera’s lens to become de-centered. Oops.

Image quality from the Mavic Mini won’t knock your socks off, but it’s more than good enough for social sharing and Web viewing, especially if you take a little time to tweak the JPEGs.

Even before the Mavic Mini was launched this Fall, I’d put together a wish list in my mind for my next drone: It would have to be small enough and light enough for me to bring it with me wherever, without a second thought. It would have to offer similar or better image quality to my Mavic Pro (either with better out-of-camera JPEGs or more workable Raw files), it would hopefully be quieter/less intrusive to others, all while offering similar battery life and a just as easy-to-fly interface.

The Mavic Mini checks off all the boxes (which is why I purchased one shortly after its launch, sight unseen). It’s nearly a quarter of the weight of the Mavic Pro and about half the size. It uses the same-sized, 1/2.3″ sensor (essentially, a smartphone-sized sensor) but the JPEG output, including color and tone, looks significantly more natural and pleasing (to me at least). There’s no Raw capture on the Mini, but that doesn’t really bother me: I pull the JPEG files into Lightroom and tweak them slightly, with good results.

The Mini also sounds less like an angry swarm of bees compared to my Pro, which will hopefully lead to fewer angry glares out in the Pacific Northwest wilderness from all those passive aggressive Seattlites I encounter. And at $ 400 for the unit, controller and battery, the Mavic Mini is significantly less investment than the current Mavic Pro offerings (The Pro Platinum is $ 1150 at the time of writing). The lower price also leads to less anxiety about potentially losing it (though that’d still majorly suck).

I’ve only been flying the Mavic Mini for several weeks now, but after a few adventures – including one in Oregon wine country – I’m hooked. The impossibly small size is hands-down its greatest feature. Getting it into my 16L Lowepro bag without displacing other necessities is no problem at all. Which means this little sky camera can come with me everywhere I go.

It’s also oh-so-easy to operate. DJI further simplified the flying experience for the Mini: It uses the new DJI Fly app, which is a pared-down and more user-friendly version of the standard DJI Go app (used by most of the brand’s other consumer drones). This is a change I welcome given the intended user is likely someone who is a beginner or intermediate drone flyer. Cleaning up the settings and options means there are less things to distract you while flying, but the experience is in no way dumbed-down. And perhaps most importantly, users still have full manual control over the camera’s settings.

I did have to give up some features by stepping down from the Mid-level Mavic Pro-series to the more beginner-oriented Mini, above and beyond Raw capture. One such feature is video quality: the max video resolution is 2.7K/30p compared to 4K/30p on my Mavic Pro (not a deal-breaker for my needs as a primarily stills shooter). The maximum flight range is also less than that of the original Mavic, a limitation I’ve yet to encounter, but I’ll report back if I do.

There is, however, one feature I wish the Mini had: Rear and front accident avoidance cameras. My Mavic Pro has a front avoidance camera and who would’ve guessed, all my crashes with it have been while going in reverse. But hopefully their absence will lead me to become a safer, more competent flyer (knocks on wood).

Ultimately, if you’re a photographer who’s been curious about drone capture and trying to decide when to pull the trigger and on which model, the time is now and the model is the Mavic Mini. At $ 400, it’s cheaper than a lot of other cameras accessories you can purchase. But it’s one that’ll likely change your perspective more than anything else you could put that money toward. Moreover, access to what is essentially a go-everywhere flying smartphone camera has put a big smile on my face, which is why the DJI Mavic Mini is my gear of the year.

What you need to know about the Mavic Mini and drone regulations

DJI’s Mavic Mini weighs 249 grams, making it exempt for registration in the US and other countries with similar regulations.

DJI’s new Mavic Mini recently started shipping out to customers. When it was initially announced the Internet was ablaze with excitement about a drone that weighed under 250 grams, exempting it from registration with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and government agencies in other countries where similar laws apply. Comments flooded into drone forums immediately, and a few were concerning.

Some people stated they felt there was no need to abide by airspace regulations and were free to fly anywhere, over people, and at night without a waiver amongst other violations. This, unfortunately, couldn’t be further from the truth. I called upon two of my respected friends and colleagues, one 30-year veteran, and one current employee of the FAA, and referenced a post from an industry expert, to help clear up any misconceptions.

What does ‘no registration’ really mean?

“Of course, sUAS under .55 lbs. (250 grams) do not require registration. However, if the sUAS is being used for commercial work in an effort to be compensated, the aircraft must be registered and FAA Part 107 regulations must be followed by the RPIC (Remote Pilot-in-Command),” said Samuel Nelson, who made it clear he wasn’t speaking on behalf of the FAA and was, instead, giving his personal opinion based on his understanding as the Boston regional FaastTeam STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Applied Mathematics) Pro.

Nelson adds “If flying as a hobbyist, you can avoid registration. However (remote pilots) still must abide to by FAA AC 91-57B AND Title 49 of the United States Code (49 U.S.C) § 44809. People must also remember DJI AeroScope systems can detect drones under .55 lbs. and the serial [number] can be identified to allow for a subpoena to identify the legal owner of the aircraft.”

Ryan LaTourette, who runs That Drone Blog and is and admin on the UAV Legal News & Discussion Facebook group pointed out the obvious: “The lesser weight does not negate that the Mavic Mini is still in the eyes of the FAA a drone, an aircraft… Mavic Mini operators are not given a free pass to fly wherever and whenever they wish. The only change at this point is the need to pay $ 5 to the FAA for a certificate of aircraft registration.”

Drones small enough to fit in the palm of your hand aren’t necessarily toys. They have a lot of beneficial uses.

What does this mean? A remote pilot flying recreationally must adhere to the following guidelines, including but not limited to:

  • The aircraft is flown within the visual line of sight of the person operating the aircraft or a visual observer co-located and in direct communication with the operator.
  • The aircraft is operated in a manner that does not interfere with and gives way to any manned aircraft.
  • In Class B, Class C, or Class D airspace or within the lateral boundaries of the surface area of Class E airspace designated for an airport, the operator obtains prior authorization from the Administrator or designee before operating and complies with all airspace restrictions and prohibitions.
  • In Class G airspace, the aircraft is flown from the surface to not more than 400 feet above ground level and complies with all airspace restrictions and prohibitions.

Commercial use

While others, including myself, didn’t feel the Mavic Mini was appropriate for commercial use, LaTourette pointed out that people shouldn’t be so narrow minded. He explains that drones even smaller than the Mini, such as Verity’s Lucie micro drone, have been used in professional scenarios for the past few years. Ryze’s Tello drone has been an instrumental tool in getting folks, especially children, excited about STEAM education. Intel drones, weighing in at 68 grams, are responsible for putting on the world’s most elaborate fireworks displays.

Verity drones weigh a mere 50 grams and have completed over 150,000 autonomous flights safely over people at rock concerts and other live events.

If you plan on using the Mavic Mini for commercial purposes in the United States, meaning you plan to receive compensation for work conducted with your drone, you will need to register the drone plus have your Part 107 certification. I personally recommend Remote Pilot 101 for straightforward, affordable training. There is, of course, a conundrum that comes with following the rules.

Loretta Alkalay, an aviation attorney who spent 30+ years with the FAA as Regional Counsel, had the following to say: “As far as the weight issue, the FAA’s drone laws are not rationally related to the potential safety impact of very small drones. That results in people either intentionally ignoring the laws because they are overly restrictive or failing to even realize that laws apply. Coupled with the lack of FAA enforcement, the people most penalized are those who do know the regulations and choose to comply with them. Of course, those who violate the regulations and get caught could face serious consequences, depending on the violation and circumstances.”

Speaking of impact, lower weight gives potential to the criteria for the FAA’s latest NPRM on easement of the §107.39 regulation for flight over people. Flying over people is currently prohibited under the §107.39 regulation. No one may operate a drone over people unless they are directly participating in the operation or are shielded under a covered structure such as a car.

So why make a lightweight drone?

DJI is certainly proud of themselves for fitting some of their most advanced features into a drone that weighs 249 grams upon takeoff. So why stuff all those features into a tiny package? Safety and the impending ruling for allowing flight over people are two top reasons.

According to a DJI Hub article that was shared by the company’s Vice President of Policy & Legal Affairs, Brendan Schulman, “regulators in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, continental Europe, Australia, and other regions have agreed that drones weighing less than 250 grams (0.55 pounds) are virtually harmless. In a fall or a collision, a sub-250g drone is just not going to cause the same kind of damage as a heavier drone.”

The Mavic Mini is tiny compared to other compact drones like the Mavic 2 Pro, but you still need to follow the normal rules when flying it.

In spite of negative media coverage, drones have been proven to be safe while providing many benefits to numerous industries including healthcare, construction, mining, agriculture and more. As Samuel Nelson pointed out earlier, the Mavic Mini is also equipped with AeroScope for Remote Identification which allows safety and security officials to detect, identify, and locate the drone and its pilot during flight if necessary. Going lighter and more compact, to ensure safety when performing complex operations, is a logical trend that is taking hold of the industry.

Review: The DJI Mavic Mini is the tiny drone you want in your Xmas stocking

DJI just announced the latest addition to its Mavic series, the Mini, and what’s most notable about it is its weight of 249 grams at takeoff. In the US, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires registration on all unmanned aerial vehicles weighing between 250 grams (0.55 pounds) and 55 pounds, and similar laws apply in many other countries.

Ultralight weight may be the Mavic Mini’s headline feature, but focusing on that overlooks the fact that it’s also a pretty capable drone at a very accessible price point. Let’s take a look at the Mavic Mini in more detail to understand where it stands out and what you may need to give up to get a drone this tiny.

The minuscule Mavic Mini

When folded down, the Mavic Mini is 140×82×57mm and fits comfortably in the palm of your hand. It’s lighter than most smartphones. The remote, which resembles those used in the Mavic 2 series, minus the electronic display, is slightly larger and heavier than the drone itself, which really puts the size in perspective.

The Mavic Mini is small, even compared to the Mavic 2 Pro.

Propellers need to be removed and replaced with a small screwdriver, which is included. This was likely designed to keep the weight down as springs and additional plastic hubs would have added more bulk. Propeller cages, which are included with the Fly More Combo, are light, easy to install, and don’t add more than a gram to the overall takeoff weight.

What’s impressive is how DJI managed to fit a 3-axis gimbal onto such a light, compact drone. This goes a long way to ensuring smooth, stabilized camera footage. The DJI Spark, by comparison, weighs 50 grams more than the Mavic Mini and only features a 2-axis gimbal.

Mounted on that 3-axis stabilized gimbal is a 1/2.3” CMOS sensor 12MP camera, similar to the ones found on the Spark, Mavic Air, and Mavic Pro Platinum. The Mini’s camera boasts a 24mm (equiv.) fixed-aperture F2.8 lens with an 83º FOV, and provides an ISO range from 100-3200. The camera doesn’t support Raw image capture, so photos will be Jpeg only. Photo enthusiasts may find this disappointing, but keep in mind this is basically DJI’s entry-level model. Finally, there isn’t a way to attach a polarizing or ND filter onto the lens.

We speculated earlier about some features the camera might include. Unfortunately, rumors of 4K recording never came to fruition. Instead, a maximum of 2.7K/30p or 1080/60p footage can be acquired at a bitrate of 40 Mbps using the H.264 codec. Unlike other DJI models in its class, there’s no way to adjust the shutter speed. Instead, when shooting video, you can adjust the Exposure Compensation. I underexposed at values ranging from -0.7 to -1.3 to avoid blowing out sensitive areas including skies.

The Mavic Mini doesn’t come equipped with obstacle avoidance sensors in the front or back. Instead, there are two vision positioning sensors located on the bottom of the aircraft, and these sensors come in handy when flying indoors as they give the drone the ability to hover in place, even without GPS. Considering that DJI’s recent trend has been to include obstacle avoidance systems on its drones, this omission is likely the result of needing to keep the weight under 250g.

The remote is slightly larger and heavier than the drone itself, which really puts the size in perspective.

DJI claims 30 minutes as the maximum battery life for the Mini. Where I’m testing in the midwest, the weather has cooled down significantly and in mild winds, at an outdoor temperature of 3ºC (about 37º F), the drone logged an impressive 25-26 minutes of flight time. It’s refreshing to know that the battery life, in reality, is consistent with what is promised by the manufacturer. It’s also rather impressive given the minuscule size, significantly outperforming models like the Spark and Mavic Air.

Unlike the Mavic 2 series, there isn’t any internal storage for media in the Mini. A memory card slot for a microSD card is located below the battery portal. A micro USB plug is included to charge the drone directly.

The controls

A new pared-down app, DJI Fly, was developed for the Mavic Mini. Most of the menu items DJI users have grown accustomed to using on the DJI GO 4 app are either gone or tucked away into a more streamlined display. A simple battery icon lets the user know how much life is left when in flight. Photo mode features timed shots and the option for shooting in Auto or Manual Mode. The video portion is straightforward, allowing users to select Exposure Compensation, resolution, frame rates, and opt for Quick Shots.

The Mavic Mini’s controller is similar in size to those of other DJI consumer drones. In the case of the Mini, it’s as large as the drone itself.

Another notable set of missing features are DJI’s Intelligent Flight modes including ActiveTrack, TapFly, and Course Lock. DJI has a history of adding features and modes into periodic app updates, however, so these may be included at some point. Automated Quick Shots available on the Mini include the Dronie, Rocket, Circle, and Helix.

There are three flying modes: Sport, Position, and Cinematic. The latter automatically adjusts the sensitivity of the joysticks making it relatively easy to acquire smooth, cinematic-like video on the fly without having to make in-app adjustments. Unlike some of DJI’s higher priced models, the Mavic Mini doesn’t include OccuSync 2.0, meaning it’s not compatible with a Smart Controller.

The user interface on the DJI Fly app is clean and simple. I tested the beta version and found it to be straightforward – something a beginner pilot will appreciate. A lot of the features more seasoned pilots work with are gone but they would likely overwhelm a newbie.

The new DJI Fly app replaces the DJI GO app used to control other DJI models. It provides a simpler interface that new pilots will appreciate, but experienced pilots may miss some features from DJI GO.

Safe Fly Zones have been incorporated into the app. This is especially useful for users not familiar with AirMap, Kittyhawk, B4UFly or other airspace management apps that tell you where it’s safe and legal to fly. I’d like to see DJI reintegrate the Battery/Return to Home Indicator feature from the DJI GO App; it’s a much more effective visual for informing remote pilots at any level about status and when it’s time to start landing the aircraft.

What’s it like to fly?

I thoroughly enjoyed flying the Mavic Mini both indoors and outdoors. The light weight of the drone made me apprehensive at first, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it handled well in moderate winds. It’s much more aerodynamic and durable than the Spark, which feels like a brick in comparison.

But this little drone has its limits. All it took was one flight along the river in downtown Grand Rapids for me to realize that high winds along Lake Michigan, which the much sturdier Phantom 4 Pro can handle with ease, would blow the Mini away – literally. It’s also quite noisy for such a little machine.

The camera on the Mini is similar to the Spark and, for comparison’s sake, the DJI Phantom 3 Pro, a model I flew 3+ years ago. The images are good enough for the price point, but people looking to capture fine details or who want more flexibility in setting everything in Manual mode are going to want an upgrade.

The Mavic Mini lacks the ability to capture 4K footage, something that may bother professionals or enthusiasts, but it’s still capable of producing decent video thanks to the stabilized gimbal. Even in moderate winds, I didn’t experience the dreaded jello effect – a paint point with older models that caused footage to appear wobbly. It’s clear that DJI limited the ability to manipulate the settings in video since beginners are more likely to rely on Auto mode. I brought it out on a semi-cloudy day and it was able to detect the difference in both sunny and overcast conditions and adjust accordingly.

Who’s it for?

If you’re creating professional-grade work, this isn’t the drone you’ll want in your arsenal. Those seeking out Raw photos, auto exposure bracketing, and high-end cinematic footage will want to start with the Mavic 2 Pro and go up from there. Even though the Mini can fly up to 500m (1,600 ft.) above ground level, and boasts a range of up to 4km (2.5 miles), it’s not something I’d be comfortable scaling a tall structure with or flying further than 1,000 – 1,500 feet away.

All that being said, this is the perfect little drone for beginners starting on their drone journey. DJI offers up an array of drones suited for specific purposes and this particular model will definitely appeal to beginners looking for a budget-friendly place to start, hobbyists looking for something portable and simple to operate, and people who don’t aspire to be professional remote pilots but would like to share unique aerial footage to their social media accounts. As the trend continues shifting toward more compact drones, it’ll be exciting to see how better cameras and technology get incorporated over the coming years.

Final thoughts

Overall, the Mavic Mini is the perfect drone for beginners. It’s lightweight, easy to set up, and a joy to fly. I tested the Fly More Combo which, at $ 100 more than $ 399 for the basic package, is a steal. It includes 3 batteries, the propeller cage (which is especially useful as the drone will simply bounce off most objects it collides with), and a case to carry it all that’s smaller than a sheet of paper. The convenience factor, alone, is what makes this drone ideal for many uses.

One final note: while it may not be necessary to register this drone in the US, it goes without saying that users still need to abide by standard airspace rules.

What we like:

  • Tiny size makes it a true ‘take anywhere’ drone
  • Good photo and video quality for a beginner model
  • Impressive 30-minute flight time

What we don’t:

  • New DJI Fly app feels a bit rough around the edges
  • No obstacle avoidance system
  • Does not include some of DJI’s intelligent flight modes

The DJI Mavic Mini is an ultralight, sub-250g drone that captures 2.7K video at 30fps

DJI has officially lifted the veil on its new sub-250g ultra-light drone, the Mavic Mini. The Mavic Mini is the smallest and lightest drone DJI has made to date, but despite its compact size, DJI has managed to pack quite a few features found in its more robust drones, such as the Mavic Air and Mavic Pro.

Inside, it features a 12-megapixel 1/2.3-inch sensor that can record 2.7K video at 30fps and 1080p video at 60 frames per second (fps). The camera module is mounted on a three-axis that sits centered beneath the main frame of the drone.

To coincide with the release of the Mavic Mini, the DJI Fly app has received an update that adds new features, fly modes and tutorials to help get first-time operators off the ground. In DJI’s own words, ‘New pilots can choose to fly in Position (P) mode for basic operation, more experienced pilots can unlock more capabilities in Sport (S) mode, and content creators can choose CineSmooth (C) mode to lengthen braking time for smoother shots and more cinematic footage.’

DJI has also added QuickShots, which are pre-programmed flight maneuvers that can b e performed with the tap of a button. The modes are defined as follows:

Rocket – Mavic Mini flies straight up into the air with the camera pointing downward following your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
Circle – Mavic Mini will circle around your subject at a constant altitude and distance.
Dronie – Mavic Mini flies backward and upward, with the camera tracking your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.
Helix – Mavic Mini flies upward and away, spiraling around your subject. Set a height limit of 40, 60, 80, 100, or 120 feet.

DJI claims the Mavic Mini will offer up to 30 minutes of flight time. It features onboard Wi-Fi and GPS for transmitting video to the included controller and keeping tabs on where the drone is at all times. DJI notes the Wi-Fi system has a maximum range of 4km (2.5 miles) when unobstructed and not in a geo-locked area.

As previously mentioned, the Mavic Mini weighs just 249g (0.55lbs). The weight of Mavic Mini is significant because it falls below the 250g limit imposed by the United States’ Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) that requires any drone heavier than 250g (0.55lbs) and less than 25KG (55lbs) be registered. By shrinking the weight of the Mavic Mini while retaining many of the technologies found in its heavier drones, DJI has opened up a new realm of possibilities for would-be drone operators who want a more compact drone that can be flown without registering it through the FAA.

In addition to the drone and controller, DJI has made a new collection of accessories specific to the Mavic Mini. These include:

360-degree Propeller Guard: Provides a 360° guard for added safety.
Charging Base: Charge and display Mavic Mini with this unique, illuminated station.

Hands-on with the DJI Mavic Mini

The DJI Mavic Mini

The Mavic Mini’s headline feature is its minuscule size, making it DJI’s smallest and lightest folding-drone. However, it still manages to deliver many of the features found inside of DJI’s larger Mavic models. It’s also designed to be extremely accessible for all levels of users. On the next few slides we’ll take a look at some of its features to see how it stacks up.

Small enough to avoid regulation?

When folded up the drone fits inside the palm of your hand and is about the length of a standard smartphone, making it the uber-portable option for drone pilots. It even looks small compared to DJI’s other compact models.

What’s arguably more notable than the Mavic Mini’s size is its weight. It’s no accident that the Mavic Mini weighs in at 249g – just under the 250g limit where additional regulations for heavier drones kick in in many countries. Does this represent a new cat and mouse game between drone manufacturers and regulatory agencies? Time will tell.

Camera and gimbal

The Mavic Mini has a camera with a 1/2.3-inch sensor that can capture up to 2.7K/30p or 1080/60p. This leaves a bit of performance on the table compared to the larger Mavic models, but even 2.7K will be plenty of resolution for many people. The camera also captures 12MP photographs. Unfortunately for photographers, it doesn’t capture Raw images.

A three-axis motorized gimbal supports the camera during flight to ensure that footage is stable. A three-axis gimbal inside such a small drone is an impressive feature; DJI’s previous compact model, the Spark, relied on a 2-axis gimbal. Although the video and photo specs aren’t quite as impressive as what you can get with a full-sized Mavic, that extra level of stability in flight will make a difference when it comes to capturing cinematic footage.

Sensors and safety

The Mavic Mini includes a number of features to help keep you safe while flying. First there’s Geofencing technology, which helps keep drone pilots away from restricted areas. The Mavic Mini also has a feature known as AeroScope remote identification, which provides authorized users – think airport traffic controllers and police departments – with location, altitude, speed, and direction of every DJI drone within a radio range as well as the location of the drone pilot and the serial number of the drone. The drone also has built-in altitude limits and an automatic return-home function if the drone’s battery becomes critically low during flight.

The Mavic Mini also features downward visual sensors that can detect the ground for hovering, stable flights and safe landings.

Battery and flight time:

The Mavic Mini has a flight time of up to 30 minutes, an impressive feat for such a small drone. In fact, it significantly outperforms other small DJI models like the Mavic Air and the Spark. DJI says this is a result of the drone’s lightweight design combined with high-grade motors.

Controller

The Mavic Mini has a dedicated controller that you can slide your smartphone into. A Wi-Fi signal gives pilots a live HD feed and a stable flying experience.

However, anyone who has flown a drone knows that it’s not just the physical controller that matters, but also the software used to control the drone. With that in mind, we’ll next take a look at DJI’s new app: DJI Fly.

The new DJI Fly app

The Mavic Mini uses DJI’s new app, DJI Fly, for remote control. DJI Fly promises to make the process of flying a drone and capturing images simpler and more accessible to pilots, particularly beginners. During our hands-on time with the Mavic Mini the Fly app was still a pre-production version, so we weren’t able to demo all of the forthcoming features.

The new app will feature tutorials to help new pilots pick up tips and tricks for flying as well as pre-set editing templates for footage. The app allows users to fly in Position mode for the most basic operation, Sport mode (designed for folks with a little more experience with drones) or CineSmooth mode, which extends braking time for footage with a more cinematic look. There will also be a number of the DJI-standard pre-programmed QuickShot modes like Rocket, Circle, Drone, and Helix.

Useful and kitschy accessories

The Mavic Mini comes with a number of optional accessories that range from practical to a little kitschy. On the practical side there’s a 360° propeller guard, a charging base that doubles as a display case, a propeller holder that locks the Drone’s propellers into place during travel, a mini travel bag, and a two way charging hub that allows you to charge up to three Mavic Mini batteries or your phone.

On the kitschy side there’s a DIY creative kit which comes with Mavic Mini sized stickers so you can customize the look of your drone (we know, just what you’ve all been waiting for), a Snap adapter that lets you attach a toy building brick for adding Legos on top of the drone or a mini LED display to write custom messages (see photo above). You can use the Snap adapter in flight, but it will certainly add weight to the drone, which is one of its most appealing features.

Pricing and availability

The Mavic Mini is available for pre-order starting today and will begin shipping on November 11. It will be available as a standard version, which includes the drone, a remote controller, one battery and extra propellers for $ 399. A Mavic Mini ‘Fly More’ combo will include everything from the standard kit as well as the 360° propeller cage, a two-way charging hub, three batteries, three sets of propellers and a carrying case for $ 499.

New FCC database filing confirms forthcoming DJI Mavic Mini

Early this morning, two new products from the world’s leading drone manufacturer, DJI, were listed with the Federal Communications Commission (FCC). After being rumored for the past two months, the Mavic Mini is now officially on the FCC’s site. While the second filing is not labeled with a product name, it’s likely going to be a remote controller for the compact, foldable drone. The filings are FCC ID SS3-MT1SS51905 and FCC ID SS3-MR1SS51905.

It has been well over a year since DJI released a consumer-grade drone. The last two major products from the Chinese manufacturer are the Mavic 2 Pro and Mavic 2 Zoom, announced at the end of August 2018. The timing for releasing the Mavic Mini isn’t random. Not only is the Holiday season upon us, competing American manufacturer Skydio recently starting accepting reservations for its compact Skydio 2 drone. Shortly after GoPro announced its Karma drone, in September 2016, DJI responded by introducing the original Mavic Pro at a swanky event.

DroneDJ was the first to report on the Mavic Mini after photos were leaked online two months ago. One notable feature that will make it worth the purchase for some consumers is the rumored weight.

In the United States, a drone must be registered with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) if it weighs more than 250 grams (0.55 pounds) and less than 25kg (55 pounds). If speculation is spot on, the Mavic Mini will weigh 245 grams at takeoff negating the need for registration. Rules and regulations are more lenient in other countries where a drone weighs less as well.

Here are a few of the rumored specs for the Mavic Mini:

  • The DJI Mavic Mini will offer a remote since controlling a drone with a smartphone is a less than ideal experience.
  • It will have a flight time of up to 18 minutes.
  • Unlike the Spark, which is similar in size, it will have obstacle avoidance sensors.
  • The drone will have a range of 3.1 miles (5 km) and a top speed of 31mph (50 km/hr).
  • The drone will have a 12MP, 1/2.3” CMOS camera that can shoot up to 4K/30p, 2.7K/60p, and 1080p/120p video.
  • The expected retail price should be around $ 399 and the release date is expected soon to coincide with the Holiday season.

DJI owns a majority stake in camera company Hasselblad. There isn’t any word on whether they’ll incorporate their technology into the Mini’s camera as they did with the Mavic 2 Pro. The latter is currently the only drone in the company’s product line that features a camera with Hasselblad’s signature Natural Color Solution. DJI requested a short-term secrecy cycle of 180 days in a Confidentiality Letter from June 25th. While that gives them until late December to release the Mavic Mini, the Holiday season may expedite the release as soon as this coming month.
