Adobe’s mobile video editing app Rush makes its way to Android

Adobe has just announced the release of Premiere Rush CC for Android. Previously the video editing app had already been available for iOS, Mac and Windows operating systems. To run the Android version, you’ll need a fairly recent and powerful device, such as the Google Pixel 2 or 3, Samsung Galaxy S9, S10 and Note 8 and 9, as well the OnePlus 6T.

Premiere Rush CC is meant to be a simpler alternative to Premiere Pro CC and Audition for mobile video editing on the move. It is aimed at Youtubers, vloggers and similar content creators.

In terms of feature set the app offers color correction and resizing, and the option to include motion graphics and audio adjustments among others. Finished videos can be directly shared to Youtube, Instagram and other channels and all projects are synced to the cloud for accessibility from all devices and data security. Projects can also be edited in Premiere Pro.

For those who want to try the app before buying, there is a free starter plan that lets you export up to three projects with 2GB of cloud storage free of charge. After that, you’ll have to subscribe to one of Adobe’s plans. You can use the app with a Premiere Pro plan which will cost you $ 10/month with 100GB of cloud storage for individuals. Team and enterprise plans are available as well.

Timelapse+ Studio makes it easier than ever to create timelapses directly in Lightroom

Timelapse+ has introduced a new plug-in for Adobe Lightroom that promises to make editing and constructing timelapse videos significantly easier. Timelapse+ Studio can identify timelapse sequences in your library and form them into collections. It will then automatically mark what it thinks are key frames in the sequence and allow users to edit those key frames in Lightroom as normal. Users can add more key frames and then have the software blend transitions to balance for adjustments across all the images in the sequence.

The software also allows users to zoom in to areas of the scene and to pan across the frame to create a sense of camera movement even in situations in which the camera and lens were stationary during recording.

Exposure differences between frames, or different parts of the sequence, can be ironed out to avoid abrupt changes, and the result can be previewed in a window within Lightroom once the sequence is complete. The company says all the automated tasks the software performs can be undone and redone by those that need manual control of the way the timelapse is created.

Twitter wants you to tweet more photos, makes its in-camera app easier to access

Twitter has announced a change to its iOS app in an apparent move to encourage the tweeting of photos. The in-app camera has received a redesign and can now be opened by simply swiping left from your Twitter timeline screen.

Once the camera has opened you can tap on the virtual shutter button to capture a still image or hold down to record video. There is also quick access to Twitter’s livestreaming feature. Location information and captions are overlaid onto photos and videos captured within the app and you can choose from a range of overlay colors.

Overall the new feature isn’t a groundbreaking change but it shows that Twitter is aiming to compete more closely with Instagram and other image-focused social media apps, most of which offer equally direct access to the camera app.

Video: Old projector lens adapter to A7 III body surprisingly makes for beautiful photos, bokeh

In pursuit of something different Mathieu Stern, who runs the Weird Lens Museum website, has adapted an old projector lens to fit on the front of his Sony a7 lll.

The lens he used is a Rollei 90mm f/2.4 MC that would have originally been fitted to a 35mm slide projector. Mathieu says he found the lens without its projector in a yard sale, and paid $ 5 for it. In the three minute video above Mathieu shows the lens in action and a number of photos captured in the sun that seem to have well controlled flare and low contrast.

As the lens has no iris the aperture can’t be varied from F2.4, but based on the results he attained, that doesn’t appear to be a problem. Mathieu discovered the lens fit perfectly into a M52 helicoidal tube which then allowed him to vary the apparent length of the lens so he could focus at a normal range of distances.

The helicoidal tube has an M42 screw mount, so all he needed to do then was find an M42 to Sony E mount adapter so the whole kit would fit on his a7 lll. Sure, it’s not the most elegant solution, but it got the job done. Below is a gallery of images captured with the setup and shared with permission from Mathieu.

AgfaPhoto brand makes a comeback with budget cameras and digital albums

Agfa-Gevaert used to be an important player in the consumer camera space, but the company failed to keep up with digital developments and in 2004 the consumer imaging division was bought out by management and transferred into the Germany-based AgfaPhoto GmbH.

The new company filed for bankruptcy just one year later, however, and these days the Agfa brand is licensed by holding-firm AgfaPhoto Holding GmbH. Agfa-Gevaert’s has completely exited from consumer business and is focusing on industrial printing, health care and information systems.

Now we’re seeing a comeback of the AgfaPhoto brand on cameras, however. The brand has been licensed to French electronics sellers GT Company which has launched three new products for the comeback:

  • 21MP digital compact camera DC5200 with lithium battery for approximately $ 45 (39 Euros)
  • Digital Instant Camera Insta Shot IS210 that captures and prints 2.1’’ x 3.4’’ images for $ 113 (99 Euros)
  • A range of digital photo and video albums that range from 2,4” to 10” in display size and can store up to 4000 photos and 90 minutes of HD video. Prices range from $ 45 to $ 113 (39 to 99 Euros).

Fujifilm X-T3 makes waves with a 26MP X-Trans sensor and 4K/60p video

Fujifilm isn’t being conservative with its new X-T3 enthusiast mirrorless camera. Rather, the company is swinging for the fences, producing a camera with a brand new 26MP BSI X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor that can shoot at up to 30 fps (in crop mode) and capture 4K/60p video. The T3’s X-Processor 4 is three times faster than the chip on current X-series models. The camera also has a native base ISO of 160, down from 200 on the X-T2. All of Fujifilm’s Film Simulation modes are here, including Acros, Classic Chrome and Eterna.

The autofocus system is a big improvement over previous X-series models

Design-wise, the X-T3 looks a whole lot like its immediate predecessor. You’ve got your weather-sealed body with analog dials, unique dual-axis articulating LCD and good-sized electronic viewfinder. Both the LCD and EVF have been enhanced, with the former becoming touch-enabled and the latter getting a resolution boost to 3.69 million dots. The EVF has a 100 fps refresh rate when the camera is in ‘boost mode,’ which no longer requires the optional battery grip for maximum performance. The EVF diopter is now lockable, and the camera’s various dials and buttons are larger and have a more pronounced ‘press feel’.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the X-T3 is just how much effort Fujifilm has put into making the X-T3 a serious video camera

The autofocus system is a big improvement over previous X-series models, with 2.1 million phase detection pixels providing nearly 100% coverage. The system checks focus and metering 1.5x faster than the X-T2 and is capable of focusing in light levels as low as -3EV. Face and eye detection have been improved, with the latter now available in AF-C mode. Fujifilm has also added a ‘Digital Microprism’ focusing aid, simulating the view through an old-school film SLR finder.

At full resolution the camera can fire away at 20 fps with the electronic shutter or 11 fps with the mechanical shutter. Putting the camera into ‘Sports Finder’ boosts the top burst rate to 30 fps with a 1.25x crop. Bright lines in the viewfinder show the cropped-in area. An available pre-capture option continuously buffers images and saves the images taken immediately before and after you press the shutter release. The X-T3’s battery life is rated at 390 shots per charge, which is above average for a mirrorless camera. The optional battery grip allows the camera to use three NP-W126S packs, with seamless switching between them.

The X-T3 can record F-Log footage with HLG support coming later in 2018.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the X-T3 is just how much effort Fujifilm has put into making the X-T3 a serious video camera. Not only can it capture 4K/60p video (DCI and UHD): it can also output 10-bit 4:2:2 to an external recorder or capture 10-bit 4:2:0 internally (using the H.265 codec). The readout rate of the sensor has been increased to reduce rolling shutter, and new noise reduction algorithms have been added.

The X-T3 can record F-Log footage (with a minimum ISO of 640), with HLG support coming later in 2018. The camera has mic and headphone sockets, along with HDMI and USB-C, and the door over all of those can be removed for when the camera is on a rig.

The X-T3 will be available starting September 20th in black and silver for $ 1,499.95 body-only, or as a kit with the XF 18-55mm for $ 1,899.95.

Introducing an all-new back-illuminated 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor and X-Processor 4 processor, the X-T3 delivers superb image quality, dramatically improved AF performance, exceptional tracking performance of fast-moving subjects and blackout-free burst shooting. The X-T3 is also the first APS-C mirrorless camera capable of 4K/60P 10bit recording to meet the needs of professional videographers.

Fourth Generation X-Trans CMOS 4 and X-Processor 4 for Improved Resolving Performance, Color Reproducibility, and Faster Processing

Featuring the latest, fourth generation 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 APS-C sensor with no optical low-pass filter, the FUJIFILM X-T3 boasts the highest performance in the history of X Series. Utilizing the unique color filter array of X-Trans CMOS sensors to control moiré and false colors, it is the first APS-C back-illuminated structure sensor with phase detection pixels distributed across the surface to improve image resolution without compromising signal to noise ratio. With the X-T3, ISO160 is now part of the standard ISO range, previously this was only available as extended ISO, perfect for use in bright scenes or when trying to shoot wide open with a fast, large-aperture lens.

The new X-T3 debuts the X-Processor 4 processor which features a Quad Core CPU to achieve a processing speed 3 times faster than current X Series models. Providing incredible AF accuracy and speed, the processor is also the first to deliver 4K/60P 10bit output, fulfilling the performance needs of professional videographers. It is also capable of implementing complex image processing tasks in an instant, such as the unique FUJIFILM Color Chrome Effect or Monochrome Adjustment function.

The new FUJIFILM X-T3 features the Color Chrome Effect, previously limited to the FUJIFILM GFX 50S medium format mirrorless digital camera, which produces enhanced color gradation in highly saturated colors such as vivid-colored flowers with shadows, a notoriously difficult subject to reproduce. With the high-speed processing power of the X-Processor 4, this effect can be applied not only to a single shot but also during continuous shooting.

Exceptional Autofocus and Viewfinder Performance

With the X-T3, AF performance receives a dramatic improvement from previous X Series products, increasing the phase detection AF area to the entire frame with 2.16M phase detection pixels providing fast and accurate phase detection AF. The low-light phase detection AF limit has been increased over the X-T2 by 2 stops, from -1EV to -3EV, making it possible for photographers to accurately focus in low light conditions, perfect for night photography.

Furthermore, the X-Processor 4’s high processing speed and excellent phase detection algorithm means the camera refocuses (AF) and meters (AE) 1.5 times more frequently than the X-T2, enabling accurate autofocus even when photographing subjects that change speed and move erratically across the frame, such as sports photography. The performance of Face Detection AF has also been improved. Eye Detection AF now supports the AF-C mode to maintain accurate focus tracking. Face and Eye Detection AF is also available during video recording to achieve smooth filming of subjects.

The X-T3 offers photographers incredible viewfinder performance, with the ability to now track a moving subject in the 3.69-million-dot high resolution EVF with a magnification ratio of 0.75x. Further the X-T3, allows continuous shooting of 11fps with the mechanical shutter without the optional vertical battery grip, enabling fast continuous shooting while maintaining a low weight.

Additional enhancements to the X-T3 include a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds and a EVF refresh rate of 100fps for smooth display of moving subject or when panning the camera. A new sports finder mode for enhanced capture of moving subjects is especially useful for sports and wildlife photography, and a new pre-shoot function, which allows photographers to start shooting as soon as the shutter button is half-pressed to ensure the moment is never missed.

Enhanced Video Performance to Meet the Needs of Professionals

The X-T3 is the first mirrorless digital camera capable of internal SD card 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit recording and the first mirrorless digital camera with APS-C or larger sensor that is capable of 4K/60P 4:2:2 10bit HDMI output. Supported video formats include the widely-used H.264/MPEG-4 AVC as well as H.265/HEVC for greater data compression, which enables internal recording of 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit at200Mbps bitrate as well as simultaneous HDMI output. The X-T3 sensor’s read speed has been increased from that of the X-T2, enabling17msec reading in 4K/60P video, reducing rolling shutter distortion for smooth recording of fast-moving subjects. 10bit color depth for video boosts the amount of color information 64 times compared to 8bit, and is combined with approximately. 12 stops dynamic range to enable capture of subjects with rich gradation of color.

Also introduced in the X-T3 is a new noise reduction algorithm and 4K inter-frame noise reduction, the minimum sensitivity for shooting F-Log footage has been lowered from ISO800 to ISO640, further enhancing the camera’s performance to meet the needs of videographers.

Designed for Ultimate Operability

Inheriting the popular design of the X-T2, dials are positioned on the top panel, and the camera features a central viewfinder and excellent grip design for stability and comfort. The X-T3 also incorporates enhancements to its design, including a lockable EVF diopter adjustment to prevent unintended adjustments while carrying the camera, and a touchscreen panel with higher contrast, wider viewing angles and better functionality for more intuitive operation. In addition, the X-T3 offers larger top-panel dials than the X-T2, and larger rear-panel buttons and a more pronounced press function of the front and rear command dials, as found on the X-H1.

X-T3 Vertical Battery Grip

The Vertical Battery Grip VG-XT3 is designed to be dust-resistant, weather-resistant and capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C/14° F, and holds two additional batteries to increase the maximum number of shots to 1,100 (in normal mode). The grip features a shutter release button, focus lever, AE-L button, AF-L button, front and rear command dials, Q button and Fn button to provide the same level of excellent operability with vertical shooting as with horizontal.

X-T3 Metal Hand Grip

The MHG-XT3 Metal Hand Grip makes it substantially more comfortable to hold the camera when it is mounted with a large-aperture lens, in order to reduce camera shake. The battery or SD cards can be replaced without having to remove the hand grip, and the base can be used as a quick release shoe when using a dovetail mount on a tripod.

The Lexar brand was one of the victims of consolidation in the market for memory solutions when parent company Micron pulled the plug in June 2017, announcing it was going to discontinue the brand. A couple of months later Chinese flash memory giant Longsys acquired the Lexar trademark and branding rights but we have not seen any new Lexar product announcements or other market activity since then.

Now we have some news, however. Longsys has announced that Lexar will be back “in full production” and shipping globally this fall.

In a statement Huabo Cai, CEO of Lexar said

“I’m extremely excited to re-introduce the Lexar brand to our worldwide customers. Lexar is dynamic, has superior research and development capabilities, and has a deep understanding of our customer’s needs. At the same time, we are confident that we can expand the Lexar business successfully in different markets globally.”

“For more than twenty years of innovative development, Lexar has been a world-renowned brand in the field of flash memory and trusted by bringing unparalleled storage experience and creating unequivocal value for business users and consumers.”

At this point there is no further detail as to whether the brand will maintain the complete past product line-up which included memory cards, card readers, solid state drives (SSDs) and USB flash drives.

However, the company says Lexar products are now shipping to retailers globally. Lexar will also be exhibiting at this year’s Photokina trade show in Cologne at the end of September, so hopefully more detail on products will be available by then.

Have you ever heard the phrase “light is everything” or perhaps “composition is everything”? I know I have many times. But they can’t both be everything, that’s not possible. So what is really going on? Obviously, there is at least a grain of truth to both expressions. But are there other factors that make great photos?

As it turns out, there are and things are not quite as simple.

A photo with very poor composition will fall apart and it will never be a great photo. But a decent composition capturing the most fantastic light can be a good photo, if not a great one. On the other hand, a great composition in poor light can make a dull photo.

Creating a photo almost always includes some sort of compromise. Either the light is not great, the timing is not perfect, or it is not possible to get to the ideal location, because you can’t walk in thin air or on water. Or maybe the prime elements in the scene are not arranged perfectly.

There are so many factors that have to come together at the exact same time, that it seems impossible to make a perfect photo. And that is part of your life, as a photographer, but knowing what counts, can make your success rate of making great photos higher.

What makes great photos?

It is a number of things that make a great photo and composition and light are obviously on that list, but what is the rest?

I find that there a five important factors that combine to make great photos. If you can maximize all five you will have a perfect photo. However, creating such a photo is really rare even for the very best photographers.

Let us have a look at them and then discuss in more detail.

You don’t have to maximize all five to make a great photo. A decent composition with fantastic light and timing, with fantastic post-processing, can make a great photo. The same goes for an outstanding composition. You will be able to make up for the lack of light to some extent. So you just have to balance the five factors without dropping any completely.

If one of the factors is somewhat lower, it can be compensated by one or more of the others if they score high. You could see it as the sum of the five pillars, that gives an indication of how great a photo is, as long as you don’t have any hitting the bottom.

They all work together

A completely failed composition, bad light, completely missed timing, non-existent story and poor image processing will tear a photo into pieces.

The factors are very often interconnected. For instance, the composition is often connected to the timing of capturing a moving object. And the light is connected to the timing, in the case of the natural light. The composition can also be connected to the light, a shadow or some light beam or another light source.

They are all dependent on each other, which increases the complexity. No wonder it is hard to create great photos! And no wonder some types of photographers, like those who do commercial studio and model photography, try to control some of the factors – namely the light – to be able to get a larger success rate on their photos.

Factor #1 – Composition

The composition is something that comes naturally to some people while others have to learn it. It is a fundamental skill to master as a photographer. If it doesn’t come naturally to you, try to copy other compositions you like, in your own way at different locations. That will quickly improve your skills.

Factor #2 – Light

The light can be many different things. There’s hard light, soft light, defused light, warm light, cold light, studio flash, the natural light just to mention some of the most commonly known types. Light is a big topic and it requires some research to get the full understanding. But that is not required to create great photos.

If you are into landscape photography, you will increase the quality of your photos by avoiding a blue sky in the middle of the day. Instead, go for sunrise and sunset times. The time after sunrise and before sunset is called the Golden Hour. Blue Hour also provides excellent light for landscape photography.

If you are into flash photography you would do well by experimenting with an off-camera flash, rather than on-camera. As well try high-speed sync flash which opens doors for creative flash photography.

My advice is to learn about the type of light that is relevant to the kind of photography you enjoy doing.

Factor #3 – Timing

The timing, depending on the type of photography you do, can be a matter of capturing that instant of a second that makes a difference. You have to capture a moment – the magic moment.

The moment of a fleeting kiss, the instant a football player kicks the ball, the moment the wave crash onto a rocky shore with a huge splash. Or as in this case, the instant four people put the same foot on the ground while walking at the same distance.

Other moments are more slow, like a sunrise. Nevertheless, it is still about timing.

You have to get up early, very early sometimes, to get to the location. That is timing. Or as in this case, getting a photo without any people, at the central station at blue hour is about timing too.

Factor #4 – The Story

The story of a photo can be anything ranging from “what delicious crumbles sitting on top of that cupcake”, to “what a fantastic round boulder on that beach” to a “touching relation between people”. A story can be somewhat abstract, yet there has to be a purpose of why you choose to include what you do in the photo.

Sometimes a story is complex and deep, while at other times it is simple “that is a nice boulder sitting in a beautiful landscape“.

You may not be equally good at telling all kind of stories, through your photos. This is perfectly alright and it is fine to stick to what you do best.

I find that story and timing can be very tightly connected as in this case of the image below. Capturing a gondola on a super busy Canal Grande in Venice, and making it seem like a peaceful romantic moment is not as easy as it may sound.

If you can get a spot, you can literally stand on the Rialto bridge for hours, while you enjoy the view. The view is full of activity and happy people.

Factor #5 – Image Processing

The last and fifth factor could raise some discussion. One that I do not want to get into here. And if you are a strong believer in Straight Out Of Camera (SOOC) photos, this point will not be relevant to you.

If you believe in photo editing, you may also know that it is often the thing that transforms a photo from flat to an image that pops. In some cases, that is what makes or breaks a photo.

Image editing or post-processing is by no means easy and there are a lot of opinions out there. But even simple things like, adjusting white balance, exposure and contrast can be the difference that makes a photo pop.

If you are into documentary photography, there are certain things you are not allowed to do. You do not meddle with reality. But if you don’t do that kind of photography, it is in the post-processing phase that you can make your artistic interpretation.

What to look out for

Image editing is a race car without a seatbelt. There are a number of things that can totally ruin your image and if you are not careful. Some of the classic problems from over-processing include halos, too contrasty and over-saturation, but there are many others.

This wedding photo of Alexander and Mia was shot in the worst possible light of midday with a blue sky. In post-processing, I have created a softer and warmer feeling to compensate.

A reason to build up your skills in image processing is that you can compensate to some degree for the other factors. You can enhance the good bits, and hide the less desired parts. Remove unwanted objects to present your photo is the best possible way, from what you captured in your camera.

A great side effect of upping your editing skills and paying some real attention to your photos is that you will get a better understanding of what make great photos. You will find things that degrade your photo (why did I include that dustbin?) and learn to avoid them next time you are on location shooting.

You learn by making mistakes and trying to fix them. The more times you fail, the better photographer you will end up being.

Final remarks

In photography, there are no absolutes. Not two people have the same opinion. We do not all like the same, things so what some people would deem a perfect photo, others may not deem perfect. Yet, there are some tendencies and you could do worse, than paying attention to what people like and don’t like if you want to create successful photos.

Any critique is an opportunity to learn something new.

Instagram updates news feed, makes it a bit more chronological

Yesterday, Instagram announced some changes to the News Feed that might quiet some of the grumbling that’s been going on ever since the app switched from a Chronological to an Algorithmic feed. No, the rumors were not true and the company is not going back to the chronological feed in full, but your Instagram feed will begin surfacing newer posts closer to the top of your feed from now on.

The announcement comes less than a week after Instagram was forced to debunk a viral rumor that it was testing a return to the Chronological feed. But it seems that rumor might have contained a grain of truth.

Yesterday’s update is actually two-fold. First, newer posts are now “more likely to appear first in feed” so you don’t have to scroll through a bunch of posts from several days ago in order to see images that were posted this morning. And Second, the feed will no longer update automatically; instead, Instagram is testing a “New Posts” button that allows you to manually refresh the feed only when you’re ready.

The latter change is a response to feedback that “it can feel unexpected when your feed refreshes and automatically bumps you to the top.” I can personally relate to this annoyance, and I’m sure some of our readers can, too.

Profile names and hashtags are now clickable in your Instagram bio.

Finally, right before this announcement went live, Instagram also revealed that it would now allow users to link hashtags and profile links in their bio. So if you add your professional photo profile to your personal bio or visa-versa, that @-name will now be clickable. Same goes for hashtags.

Adding a level of security to this, whenever you link someone’s profile in your bio, their account will receive a notification, and they can choose to remove the link.

All of these changes are rolling out now, although the News Feed changes still in the ‘testing’ phase. To take advantage of the updates yourself, just make sure you’re using the latest version of Instagram on either iOS or Android.

Introducing Hashtag and Profile Links in Bio

Today, we’re introducing hashtag and profile links in bio, a new way to express yourself and the things you care about. Now when you include a # or @ in your bio, they become live links that lead to a hashtag page or another profile.

In December, we introduced the ability to follow hashtags, giving you new ways to stay connected with the interests, hobbies, passions and communities you care about. With hashtag and profile links in your bio, you can express yourself and your interests right in your profile. Whether you’re a #guitarlover, into #pencilsketching or have a #makeuptutorial account, now you can link to any hashtag or profile you want.

To add a hashtag or profile link in your bio, just tap on Edit Profile and go to the bio section. When you type a # or @, you will see a list of recommended hashtags and accounts in the typeahead. Once you select the hashtags and accounts you want, they will automatically be linked in your bio.

When you mention someone else’s profile in your bio, they will receive a notification and can choose to remove the link to their profile. Their profile will remain in your bio but without a link.

GoPro Fusion makes official debut, captures 5.2K spherical video

GoPro’s pro-grade spherical camera has been in the works for a while now, but today Fusion gets its official debut today. It’s capable of 5.2K/30p and 3K/60p spherical video capture, in addition to 18MP spherical stills. It touts gimbal-like stabilization without a gimbal, and provides a feature GoPro calls OverCapture to create tradition fixed perspective video from 360-degree footage.

It’s not quite as rugged as its Hero siblings, but Fusion is waterproof to 5m/16ft. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity are included and the camera is compatible with the existing GoPro app. It’s up for pre-order now to US, UK, European and Canadian customers for $ 700.
