Pixelmator Photo AI-powered image editing app for iPad will launch this year

Pixelmator has announced plans to release an image editing app called Pixelmator Photo for the Apple iPad. The new app utilizes Apple’s Core ML machine learning technology to power multiple features including ML Fix, an algorithm trained using 20 million professional images.

Pixelmator Photo is an AI-powered app offering non-destructive image editing with desktop-class adjustments on the iPad. The software features ML Fix, ML Crop, and ML Presets, all features that utilize machine learning to enhance images. ML Crop’s algorithm offers crop suggestions that fit the user’s desired aspect ratio, for example, while ML Fix intelligently adjusts color, white balance, and exposure.

The ML Preset feature, meanwhile, offers film emulation presets enhanced using machine learning. The presets are designed to imitate film products that include Ilford HP5, Kodak Porta, and Fujifilm Superia. The feature works by first adjusting an image’s colors and lighting, then applying the film preset.

Other Pixelmator Photo features include adjustment tools like Curves, Levels, Saturation, Exposure, and Brightness, as well as support for raw images from more than 500 cameras, cropping, grain adjustment, and the inclusion of a Repair tool.

The app will launch in the Apple App Store this year as an iPad exclusive. The price hasn’t yet been revealed.

CamRanger 2 set for 2019 launch with improved range, Sony and Fujifilm support

CamRanger has shared an announcement on its website teasing the upcoming CamRanger 2 system. In addition to faster connections and improved range, CamRanger 2 will offer full support for select Sony and Fujifilm camera systems.

CamRanger 2 is said to be five times faster than previous versions with 802.11ac WiFi and roughly two times faster when using 802.11n WiFi. CamRanger 2 will also have an effective usage range more than three times its current model.

More significantly, the CamRanger 2 system will support select Sony and Fujifilm cameras. ‘We always said we would not offer support until we could do it in a way that works for professionals,’ says CamRanger on its announcement page. ‘Our new design removes previous limitations, limitations other wireless tethering devices suffer from.’ It remains unknown what cameras will and won’t be supported.

CamRanger has also updated the accompanying apps for the impending CamRanger 2, noting it’s taken inspiration from the CamRanger Mini apps and customer feedback to make an app that both looks better and includes new features.

Unfortunately, CamRanger doesn’t give a hard number for a release date. The only thing we know is the CamRanger 2 system will launch sometime in 2019. If you want to keep up with the latest updates, head over to CamRanger’s website and sign up for its newsletter.

Rumors point to imminent Canon full-frame mirrorless system launch

Over the past few days, rumor sites seem to have come to a consensus that Canon will launch a full-frame mirrorless camera in the very near future. Canon Rumors and Canon Watch point to a full-frame body called the EOS R, alongside a list of lenses published today by Japanese news and rumor site Nokishita. A list of ‘RF’ lenses rumored to be launched with the system include:

  • Canon RF 35mm F1.8 M IS
  • Canon RF 50mm F1.2L USM
  • Canon RF 28-70mm F2L USM
  • Canon RF 24-105mm F4L USM

Also rumored to be announced soon:

  • Canon EF-M 32mm F1.4 STM
  • Canon EF 400mm F2.8L IS III
  • Canon EF 600mm F4L IS III

Nokishita also suggests that a battery-grip, radio-wave receiver and an adapter (M to R, or “mount” – they say it’s unclear which) will also be announced.

Obviously, nothing is confirmed at this point and rumors are rumors. But we’d be surprised if Canon wasn’t prepping a full-frame mirrorless system amid competition from Sony and now Nikon. What’s your take on this list of lenses supposedly launching with the system? Let us know in the comments.

DJI teases August 23 launch event, new drone in new video

DJI has published a video on its YouTube channel teasing a new product due out August 23, 2018. No specific details are shared, but at the very beginning of the video, we catch a glimpse of what appears to be an on/off button of a drone.

After the short clip of what looks like the body of a drone, the narrator of the video says:

For more than a decade we’ve taken the dimension of space to give you the freedom of flight. But did you think we’d stop there? Let us take you beyond the horizon where something incredible awaits. It’s about time.

The video wraps up with a clip that overlays the words ‘see the bigger picture.’

DroneDJ says the on-off button we see at the beginning of the video is likely that of the yet-to-be-announced Mavic 2 Drone. Considering the similarities between the device in the teaser clip and the Mavic Pro, it’s not much of a stretch to draw that conclusion.

Back in June, DJI sent out an invitation to press outlets teasing an event set for July 18. Three weeks after sending out the invitation, DJI delayed the event, citing issues regarding user experience and customer expectations. We’ll have to wait and see if the August event stays on-track or is pushed back once again.

Google One cloud storage plans launch publicly for customers in the US

Earlier this year, Google introduced its new cloud storage service Google One, replacing its Google Drive plans with new alternatives offering more storage at the same price. The company started converting its existing Google Drive paid customers over to Google One, upgrading the original 1TB $ 9.99/month plan to a greater 2TB capacity at the same rate.

Google One wasn’t available to new customers at the time, but that has changed. Anyone in the United States can now sign up for Google One, which starts at $ 1.99/month for 100GB, increasing to $ 2.99/month for 200GB and $ 9.99/month for 2TB. All Google users still receive 15GB for free with their account.

Users can upload their own files to Google One, also using the plan for Drive, Gmail, and storing original resolution Google Photos images. The product also includes direct access to help experts, as well as “extra benefits” that Google says will include Play credits, “special hotel pricing,” and more.

Customers who need to store large amounts of data have three high-capacity options: 10TB for $ 99.99/month, 20TB for $ 199.99/month, and 30TB for $ 299.99/month. Up to five family members can be added to Google One plans. According to Google, other countries will get Google One access “over the next few weeks.” US-based customers can sign up now.

Gitzo teams up with Sony to launch tripod and L-bracket designed for ?-series cameras

As part of a collaboration between Vitec Group and Sony, Gitzo has introduced a new pair of products designed specifically for Sony ?7 and ?9 cameras: the Traveler ? Tripod and the L-Bracket ?.

The new products ‘feature a tailored design to perfectly fit Sony ?7 and ?9 camera models, helping to increase grip and stability for precise framing and extraordinary composition,’ according to Vitec Group.

Gitzo’s new Traveler ? is a ‘premium travel tripod’ featuring a new design and monochromatic color scheme to match the appearance of Sony ?-series cameras. It weighs just 1.43kg/3.15lbs, opens to 165cm/64.96in and holds up to 10kg/22lbs of gear. Like Gitzo’s other travel tripods, the Traveler ? folds down to just 43cm/16.93in when using the 180-degree leg-folding system.

The legs themselves are constructed of Carbon eXact tubing and use the Traveler G-lock system for securing the proper height. The Traveler ? is paired with Gitzo’s ‘most compact professional carbon fiber tripod head […] engineered to provide the ultimate smoothness and precision of movement and secure locking with independent pan/tilt lock.’ To wrap it all up, the special-edition tripod includes a genuine Italian leather carry strap designed to mimic the aesthetic of carbon fiber.

The second new product is the L-Bracket ?, which Gitzo calls ‘the lightest of its kind on the market,’ weighing in at just 77g/2.7oz. The bracket is milled from a single piece of aluminum ‘to become one with the most high-level professional mirrorless cameras on the market.’ Its design includes four attachment points for camera straps, an open design for easy access to ports and cables. There’s also a dedicated spot for the hex keys and accessories so you don’t need to carry another bag of tools around.

The Gitzo Traveler ? costs $ 999.99, while the Gitzo L-Bracket ? will set you back $ 199.99. They are available now on Gitzo’s online shop and authorized dealers.

Skylum’s DAM will launch as a free beta for current Luminar owners

Skylum has announced that a beta version of its Digital Asset Manager (DAM) for Luminar will arrive ahead of the full product launch. The beta will be provided for free to owners of the current Luminar version, the final sale of which will be revealed “within a few weeks,” the company said. After this final sale, Skylum will increase Luminar’s retail price, promising that it will “still be very affordable.”

Skylum hasn’t yet revealed a shipping date for the DAM, explaining that it is still working on development ahead of the beta arrival. The company anticipates its DAM taking Luminar “in a new direction,” offering faster workflows, custom workspaces, a less cluttered interface, and much more. Talking about this is Skylum president Scott Bourne, who said in the company’s recent blog post:

Skylum plans to build our DAM so that we can keep simple things simple. We’re focusing our research and engineering efforts on a few key things. We want our software to be fast. Our goal is to be the fastest. Period. We also want to make sure that with Luminar, it will be fast, fun and easy to browse, rate, edit, share, and enjoy your pictures. That’s it.

Future versions of Luminar will be created with the company’s design goals in mind. Skylum is encouraging its customers to make sure they’re using the latest Luminar version to be put in the queue for the eventual free beta DAM.

NASA photographer Bill Ingalls’ camera melted in fire caused by rocket launch

Last week, a tweeted image of a melted camera belonging to NASA photographer Bill Ingalls caught the Internet’s attention. In a statement clarifying the matter, the space agency explained the story behind the image, saying, “His creativity and efforts to get unique images are well known within the agency and to those who follow it.”

Ingalls has worked as a NASA photographer for 30 years. In its statement published Friday, NASA explained that Ingalls knows where to setup his cameras, and that a grass fire caused by the GRACE-FO launch on May 22 was behind the damage. Though Ingalls had placed two cameras outside of the launch pad safety perimeter, the melted camera was one of four placed within the perimeter.

Speaking with NASA, Ingalls said, “I had six remotes, two outside the launch pad safety perimeter and four inside. Unfortunately, the launch started a grass fire that toasted one of the cameras outside the perimeter.”

Despite the camera casualty, NASA says the memory card within the camera survived the fire. The space agency published a GIF of the fire as it moved toward the camera, which recorded its own demise. NASA says it’ll “likely” display the melted device at its Washington DC headquarters.

Huawei may be the first to launch a triple-camera smartphone

With dual-cameras pretty much a standard-feature on high-end smartphones these days, it was only a matter of time before the first manufacturer would announce a mobile device with three (or even more) camera modules per side. If rumors are true, it looks as if this manufacturer will be China’s Huawei.

Unlike in previous years, the Chinese device-maker won’t launch their new premium model at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona at the end of this month. Instead, the P20 (as the new model is likely to be called) will be announced at a stand-alone event in Paris on the 27th of March.

According to a report by Forbes, the P20 will be the first smartphone to come with a triple-camera, offering a total resolution of 40MP and a 5x optical/digital hybrid zoom. Additionally, the front camera will feature 24MP resolution.

As, with previous models, the cameras have reportedly been co-developed with German optics manufacturer Leica.

The Huawei Mate 10 Pro features a dual cam co-engineered with Leica.

There are no further details regarding how the triple-camera technology exactly works, but we would assume the typical image output size will be considerably smaller than 40MP, and the high pixel count is mostly used for hybrid zoom and computational imaging purposes, such as de-noising and HDR.

The Mate 10 Pro is already one of the best smartphone cameras we have tested in a while, so it’ll be interesting to see what performance Huawei can squeeze out of a device with an additional camera module. We’ll know more in a few weeks time.

Google Clips smart camera will launch soon, appears in FCC documents

During its October 2017 event, Google surprised the camera world by introducing a small AI-powered lifelogging camera named Google Clips. And now, thanks to some uncovered FCC documents, it looks like we’re getting close to an official release date.

Google Clips is an interesting concept. Unlike other cameras that require a bit of input from the user, Google said Clips could analyze situations and automatically capture memorable moments, growing smarter over time—just place it on a shelf and it would ‘learn’ to capture your most important moments as they unfolded. Several months later, however, we still haven’t heard anything from Google about a release date. We know it’ll cost $ 250 USD when it launches, and the Google Clips product page offers prospective buyers the option to join a waitlist, but Google hasn’t revealed anything more.

That’s where the eagle-eyed folks at Variety come in. Earlier this week, they noticed that the camera recently passed through the FCC, indicating that a launch is imminent. In other words: if you’re holding out for the Google Clips, your wait is almost over.
