TriLens triple lens holder coming to Kickstarter

25 Apr

We’ve seen belt-mounted lens-holders before, but the TriLens from Swedish startup Frii Designs takes things to a new level. This holder lets you attach three lenses to a belt-worn device that is made of steel and fiber-reinforced nylon and can carry up to 100kg weight.

“There’s nothing worse than coming home from a photo shoot and realize that you’ve missed irreplaceable moments because you struggled with changing lenses, or that you simply were too lazy to go through the process,” Frii Designs founder Jonas Lundin says.

TriLens arranges three lens mounts on a triangle that rotates around its center. This way the heaviest of the attached lenses always points downwards and one open lens mount will be easily accessible at the top. In addition, the system comes with built-in stabilization to keep things less bumpy when walking or even running. The rotational friction of the system is automatically adjusted based on the weight of the attached lenses.

TriLens is compatible with Canon, Nikon, and Sony-mount lenses and included in the package is a set of magnets that let you attach your lens caps to an open mount when the corresponding lens is in use.

Frii Designs is planning to fund initial production through crowdfunding and will launch its Kickstarter campaign for the TriLens on May 9. The company’s goal is to secure around 600 pre-orders to get production going. Photographers  who think the TriLens could make their work day easier can sign up on the Frii Design website to register interest and for pricing information. You’ll also be notified about the campaign launch. If everything goes to plan, shipping is planned to start in October this year.

Alpine Labs’ Spark 3-in-1 camera trigger seeks funding on Kickstarter

17 Apr

Alpine Labs, the company behind the Pulse camera remote, is back on Kickstarter with a more powerful and versatile triggering device. The Spark camera remote allows for triggering your camera in three ways: you can either use it as an infrared wireless remote, control, plug it into your camera with a cable and use it as a wired remote, or connect it to your smartphone and a dedicated app via Bluetooth to unlock a variety of creative trigger options.

The app offers customizable settings and lets you shoot timelapses, HDR brackets and long exposures and can trigger up to three cameras at once. Using the infrared connection you can trigger single shots or capture time lapses at one-second intervals by holding-down the shutter button.

The cable connection offers more reliability and doesn’t require line of sight to your camera’s infrared sensor. According to Alpine Labs the button battery will work for over 2,000 hours of use. In addition the device works with a large number of cameras. The Spark Kickstarter campaign will be running until May 20. Until then you can reserve a Spark device for $ 44 which is 25 percent off the envisaged future retail price.

Meyer Optik Trioplan 35+ Kickstarter unlocks colorful lens trio reward

22 Mar

Meyer Optik has an active Kickstarter campaign seeking funding for its new Trioplan 35+ Fine Art Lens, and though 22 days remain in that campaign, backers have already well exceeded the company’s $ 50,000 base funding goal. As a reward for the high amount pledged (about $ 480,000 total at the moment), Meyer Optik has announced the launch of a new limited edition reward: green, red, blue and titanium versions of the Trioplan lens.

According to Meyer Optik, it took a total of six minutes post-launch for the Kickstarter campaign to reach its $ 50,000 funding goal. Over the following week, the Kickstarter went on to raise in excess of $ 420,000, and the company has launched the special Kickstarter stretch reward as a result. Says company CEO Dr. Stefan Immes, ‘The new colors are strictly limited in quantity and, therefore, [are] a real collector’s item.’

The crowdfunding campaign now includes pledge options for the new colors, of which 50 units are available per color. All four special ‘super limited color edition’ Trioplan lenses are priced at $ 799 and are estimated to ship to backers this upcoming November.

Meyer Optik launches Kickstarter campaign to fund third Trioplan lens – the 35+

10 Mar

German lens manufacturer Meyer Optik Gorlitz intends to produce the ‘last chapter’ of its ‘Trioplan Trilogy’ if it gets enough funding from its latest Kickstarter campaign to build the Trioplan 35+. The new lens will sit alongside the company’s 100mm F2.8 and 50mm F2.9 Trioplan ‘Soap Bubble’ lenses and will have a maximum aperture of F2.8.

As with the 100mm and 50mm models, the 35mm lens will be based on a historic optical design but will use modern coated glass from Schott and Ohara. This time though, the construction will shift away from the traditional three-elements-in-three-groups of the standard Cooke triplet and will have an additional pair of elements at the front to adapt the design for full frame sensors. The original Trioplan 1.8in lens this one is based on was designed for 8mm film and was telephoto for the format, according to the company, so some changes had to be made to alter it to be a moderate wide for 35mm-style sensors. The extra two elements account for the + in the 35+ name.

The new lens will focus to 0.3m and its 12-bladed iris will provide a minimum aperture of F22. Meyer says it intends to make the lens in a range of mounts:

  • Canon EF
  • Nikon F
  • Sony E
  • FujiX
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • M42
  • Pentax-K
  • Leica M (rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)
  • Leica L , suitable for SL & T mirrorless cameras (strictly manual, rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)

The ‘soap bubble’ name comes from a characteristic of the design that renders out-of-focus highlights in dramatic style when the lens is used wide open.
At the time of writing the campaign had already passed its goal three times over, but lenses could still be ordered for $ 649 against an expected full retail price of $ 1599. For more information visit the Meyer Optik Gorlitz website or the company’s Kickstarter page.

Technical data:
Focal length: 35 mm
Aperture: 1:2,8, – 1:22
Angle: +/- 31,5°
Focussing Distance: Infinity to 0,3 m
Clip on diameter: 41 mm
Filter Diameter: M 39 x 0,75
Size: Ø 61,5 mm x 50 mm
Weight: ca. 220g
Aperture blades: 12

Manufacturer’s information:

The Trioplan 35mm is now on Kickstarter

Our new Kickstarter just launched and the mystery lens that you´ve been waiting for is the Trioplan 35mm f2.8, or as we´ve dubbed it, the Trioplan 35+.

The Trioplan 35+ is the final piece of our Trioplan Trilogy, which includes the Trioplan 100mm f2.8 and the 50mm f2.9.

Kickstarter backers will be the first in line to get this incredible addition to the Meyer-Optik lineup of hand-crafted, manual focus art lenses. The Trioplan 35+ is expected to be available at the retail price of $ 1,599 later this year but Kickstarter backers can secure the lens for a much lower investment. What backers will get is a groundbreaking lens.

Previously, it was thought too difficult to achieve the soap bubble effect in a wide angle lens. But Meyer-Optik engineers designed the new lens according to the historic Cook Triplet design but added two elements to boost the lens. The extra two lens elements is why Meyer-Optik decided to add the “+” to the name of the lens.

The Trioplan 35+ will be unrivaled in its ability to capture the spirit and emotion of the moment. Photography is not just about squeezing the most pixels into a square inch – it´s about creating art.

The Trioplan 35+ is a full-frame lens and will be available in all major mounts. Early backers will profit from a Super Early Bird pricing.

Don´t miss your chance to be one of the first in line to get this new Trioplan lens, which will join the Trioplan 100mm f2.8 and Trioplan 50mm f2.9 in the Meyer-Optik lineup of premier, hand-crafted art lenses. Of course Kickstarter backers will benefit from a groundbreaking price.

Moment rolls out Kickstarter for redesigned lens and new cases for iPhone 7 / 7 Plus

08 Feb

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5370414927″,”galleryId”:”5370414927″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Mobile photo accessory provider Moment is introducing two iPhone 7 / 7 Plus cases via Kickstarter: a battery case for storing extra charge, and a standard case. Both cases are compatible with a new wide-angle attachment lens designed specially for the 7 and 7 Plus.

The Battery Photo Case offers a two-stage shutter release button. When used with Moment’s camera app a half-press will acquire focus. Apple’s stock camera app will only recognize a full press and shoot accordingly. The case does not use Bluetooth to communicate with the phone, unlike previous Moment cases. Instead, it uses the Lightning connector, which the company says is 75% faster.

Moment’s new Photo Case is a cheaper alternative without the shutter button or backup battery. It’s slim and offers basic protection from wear-and-tear, and offers an attachment for a wrist strap.

Both cases provide a mount for the new Wide Lens (as well as an adapter for existing Moment lenses), which can be positioned over the phone’s wide and telephoto lenses. Moment says the lens has been re-designed considering the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus’ wider aperture lenses. The slightly larger lens is also lens prone to vignetting cause by misalignment.

Planned MSRP for the Wide Lens is $ 100, the Photo Case is $ 30 and the Battery Photo Case is $ 100. The company is well on its way to its $ 500,000 Kickstarter goal, and is offering discounts to early backers. As with any Kickstarter project things might go awry, but if all goes to plan Moment will ship the new cases and lenses starting the end of May.

Unable to recover from failed Kickstarter project, Triggertrap announces it will close shop

01 Feb

Triggertrap, one of the pioneers in the area of smart camera triggers, has today announced that it will cease operations within approximately a month. Triggertrap was founded in 2011, following a successful Kickstarter campaign. The initial product offered a wide range of trigger options, including, sound and motion sensors and an intervalometer.

In 2013 the company launched another Kickstarter campaign, this time for the Triggertrap Ada, a modular and expandable follow-up version to the original product line. Despite the campaign being very successful, raising more than $ 500,000, trouble started when the cost of components was higher than originally quoted by some suppliers and in May 2015 Triggertrap had to admit the project had failed and the Ada could not be delivered.

The company has never been able to recover from this failure and today one of the founders, CEO Haje Jan Kamps, has posted an article on medium, announcing the closure of the company.

“Triggertrap, like any startup, had some big highs and lows. At one point, we employed 15 staff; a team of photographers, coders, support, marketing, logistics, and operations. Ever since we announced that our Triggertrap Ada Kickstarter project failed, we’ve been in a downward spiral. For the past 18 months, we’ve been operating with just a few team members, who have been working their asses off to keep the lights on. But ultimately, we weren’t able to claw our way out of the hole, and the company now owes the company’s founders around $ 60k. With no realistic hope of ever paying that money back, and after ten months in a row of struggling to make payroll for our remaining staff members, we decided it was time to give up.”

Technical support for Triggertrap products will end with immediate effect. Apps will remain available for download in the respective app stores but are sooner or later likely to run into incompatibility issues with updated operating system . If you are happy to keep using your current mobile OS and rely just on the Reddit-forum for support, you can still buy a Triggertrap device at a hefty discount in the online store.

AirSelfie, a pocket-sized camera drone, launches on Kickstarter

18 Nov

An London-based startup is looking to fund production of a tiny, flying selfie camera called AirSelfie. AirSelfie features four propellers surrounded by safety guards and is compact enough to slot inside of a smartphone case. It features a 5MP camera that can take photos and record videos from up to 20m/66ft.

AirSelfie produces its own 2.4GHz WiFi network to which smartphones can connect. Users control the drone using a mobile app available for iOS and Android, both of which include a ‘selfie delay timer’ with a range up to 10 seconds. A maximum of eight consecutive photos can be taken. Content is saved to an included 4GB microSD card. Unfortunately, flight duration is very low at only 3 minutes per charge.

A Kickstarter campaign seeking funding for AirSelfie went live today with a funding goal of nearly $ 50,000. Assuming that goal is met, the company plans to offer the AirSelfie at a reduced price of $ 249, with two units costing $ 478. The team behind AirSelfie anticipates shipping the first 3,000 pre-ordered units in March 2017, with everything else shipping starting in April 2017.

Press release

AirSelfie Launches Best Pocket-Sized Flying Camera for Smartphones

Armed with a $ 3M investment, AirSelfie will debut on Kickstarter November 17 to give fans early access to the first pocket-sized flying camera; pre-orders will be delivered March 2017

London, November 17, 2016 – AirSelfie has today announced the launch of the first pocket-sized flying camera, the only portable flying camera that integrates with smartphones. Comprised of four powerful propellers and a 5-megapixel video camera, AirSelfie is smaller than a smartphone and can fly vertically up to 66 feet, allowing users to take aerial selfies of themselves and their friends. The device connects to the most popular smartphones, including iPhone (6, 6s, 7 and 7 Plus), Huawei P9, Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge. The device includes self-generated WiFi and comes equipped with a rechargeable battery through a cell phone case, as well as the option to purchase an external power bank. Additionally, a vibration-absorber system and in-flight stability systems guarantee stable, clear, flowing images.

AirSelfie is available for pre-order via Kickstarter beginning November 17, 2016, for delivery in March 2017.

“Our team of 60 seasoned technology professionals and enthusiasts researched, designed and created a flying camera that exceeds all current standards,” said Edoardo Stroppiana, co-founder of AirSelfie. “We saw an increasing need for a device that goes beyond a selfie stick, allowing users to take pictures from all angles, and we’re excited to introduce AirSelfie to Millennials and consumers around the world. It sets a completely new bar for the market.”

With AirSelfie, users can:

  • Take group selfies and family photos from up to 66 feet away, capturing both people and panoramas
  • Take indoor and outdoor aerial photos of subjects and locations that would otherwise be unreachable (e.g. monuments and stadiums during sporting events)
  • Take videos from perspectives that were formerly impossible
  • Use the device as a monitoring camera (when the device is not flying and is connected to a power source)
  • Use the video as a work tool (for example, time-lapse shots of company event setups)

AirSelfie’s 5-megapixel video camera and four powerful propellers are enclosed in an Italian-designed, stylish and lightweight (52g) aluminum case that measures 3.72 x 2.65 x 0.42 inches – smaller than a smartphone. The device attaches to users’ smartphones using a special cover available for iPhone and Samsung which contains a battery that can recharge AirSelfie in just 30 minutes. Backers can also purchase an external power bank which guarantees up to 20 full charges and allows those without a compatible phone to use and charge AirSelfie.

How it works

One of the key differentiating—and appealing—features of AirSelfie is its ease of use. To activate AirSelfie, the user simply removes it from its case and turns it on. The device connects automatically to smartphones via WiFi—the flying camera creates the WiFi (2.4GHz) network itself and it is immediately ready for take-off.

AirSelfie users must simply download the free iOS and Android app in order to control the device’s movements through three different flight modes. AirSelfie can be returned to its departure point either manually or automatically. When users are finished using the device, it’s easy to return it to its landing spot—simply press the button labelled “slide to land” and AirSelfie descends and turns off. Users can also directly reposition the device by hand with no risk whatsoever of damaging it or themselves.

Using the “selfie delay timer” function, users can take timed photos, giving them up to 10 seconds to get into position and hide their smartphone so that it doesn’t appear in photos. Users can also take up to eight consecutive shots. AirSelfie’s technology integrates directly with social media, making it easy to post photos and videos directly to users’ accounts.

AirSelfie comes equipped with a 4 GB micro SD memory card and a 260mAh 7.4v battery that enables three minutes of flight time.

AirSelfie on Kickstarter

To give consumers a special first look at AirSelfie, the company is launching a Kickstarter campaign that will go live on November 17, 2016. Consumers can purchase AirSelfie via the Kickstarter website or Kickstarter app. As an added incentive, the first 1,000 supporters have the option of becoming AirSelfie Ambassadors by pre-ordering the first version of the flying camera at the discounted price of $ 199; the regular retail price will be $ 300. Additionally, the power bank will be available as a standalone product for $ 69 or as part of the AirSelfie package for $ 246. The power bank will be delivered in April.

Production of the gadget will begin once the threshold of $ 50,000 is reached. After the first 1,000 AirSelfies have sold, the company will produce another 2,000 models, which will be available for the reduced price of $ 249. Consumers will also be able to purchase two AirSelfies for the price of $ 478. The first 3,000 pre-orders will be delivered in March of 2017, with the rest, including the power bank packages, being delivered in April of 2017.

“People have the impression that camera drones are costly, difficult to operate and unwieldy,” added Stroppiana. “AirSelfie redefines the space with a device that’s small, light and easy to use. This Kickstarter campaign will enable the launch of a large-scale AirSelfie production in a matter of months. We have succeeded in developing a great product, and we can’t wait to share it with our growing base of AirSelfie enthusiasts.”

In 2017, AirSelfie will hit the market for $ 300. It will be available in other colors and will be compatible with additional smartphone models.

For additional information and other opportunities to support the project, visit the AirSelfie Kickstarter page.

Lume Cube returns to Kickstarter with the Life Lite mini LED cube

01 Nov

Lume Cube launched the first generation of its high-powered LED-lighting cube for smartphones and action cameras back in 2014. Now, the company has returned to Kickstarter to raise funding for its follow-up product Life Lite. Compared to the original Lume Cube the Life Lite is about half the size and weight but, at 1000 lumens, still offers approximately 70% of the Lume Cube’s light output.

As before, you can control one Life Lite, or several units, via a smartphone app and a Bluetooth connection. The Life Lite is waterproof down to 10m/33ft, making it suitable for filming surfing and other water-based activities. There are multiple levels of strobe mode for creative lighting effects, a physical multifunction button and a custom fresnel lens. The emitted light has a color temperature of 5600K and the light is charged via a microUSB connector. A full charge gives you approximately 30 minute of illumination.

The Life Lite also comes with an internal magnet and a standard tripod mount, allowing for attachment to a wide range of metallic objects and camera support systems. You can secure a Life Lite now by pledging $ 39 on the project’s Kickstarter page. Shipping is planned for March 2017.

Meyer Optik brings back the Primoplan 58 F1.9 on Kickstarter

10 Sep

Meyer Optik, a German lens manufacturer that has already brought some of its historic lens designs back to life via crowdfunding campaigns, has launched another Kickstarter project. This time the company is looking for funding to relaunch the Primoplan 58/F1.9 lens, designed 80 years ago by engineer Paul Schaefter.

The lens comprises five elements and offers different styles of bokeh, depending on subject distance and aperture. The 58/F1.9 uses some of the same components, including the housing, as the Trioplan 50. This means Meyer Optiks can generate economies of scale and offer the lens at a more affordable price than otherwise possible.

The new Primoplan 58/F1.9 will be available worldwide and shipping is slated for February or March 2017. To minimize the cost of delivery the lens will be shipped, depending on the buyer’s location, from either the US or Germany. The campaign has already surpassed its funding goal but you can still secure a Primoplan 58/F1.9 by pledging $ 599. More information, sample images and a video are available on the project’s Kickstarter page.
