F-Stop abandons KitSentry Kickstarter, doesn’t offer backers refunds

F-Stop Gear has announced that KitSentry, the bag it sought (and successfully raised) funding for on Kickstarter, will not be brought to market. The notice, which was posted as the final update for Kickstarter backers on Sunday, details various production issues and expenses that ultimately made KitSentry less than ‘economically viable.’ The company’s explanation is at odds with a report published in a recent investigative article by Resource Magazine, however, where an insider claims the Kickstarter campaign ‘was a sham from the beginning.’

The Kickstarter campaign launched on February 23, 2015 and sought funds for KitSentry, a product F-Stop described as ‘the next generation smart bag.’ The campaign was reached its goal on March 3, 2015 and ultimately raised $ 27,039 by its end. The first sign of trouble arose with an August 2015 update in which F-Stop said it would be pushing back all of its deadlines by three or four months. By the time its April 2016 update was posted, backers were agitated and many were demanding refunds.

In the final update posted yesterday, F-Stop cited ‘two big problems’ it couldn’t overcome: trouble getting around existing patents and higher than anticipated production costs. ‘While we may have been able to overcome one of the obstacles,’ the post explains, ‘the two combined have proven to be too much at this time. Even after the additional investment of time and money, it has become obvious that KitSentry is not economically viable.’

It doesn’t appear backers will be refunded, with F-Stop instead offering ‘a goodwill credit toward any f-stop product, equal to the amount pledged on Kickstarter.’

Earlier this month, however, Resource Magazine published an article detailing the troubled campaign and a conversation the piece’s author Jaron Schneider had with a contact he said he ‘greatly’ trusts. That source claimed, in part, that F-Stop’s CEO has been hemorrhaging company money with a lavish personal lifestyle, unsustainable projects, premature promises and mismanagement.

In regards to the KitSentry Kickstarter, it was a sham from the beginning. A former colleague of the CEO apparently ‘stole’ an idea the CEO had and was trying to execute KitSentry in some form or another. Once that former colleague started creating public info about that product, the CEO got spooked and forced his now-former marketing team to create a Kickstarter campaign to raise funding for a half-baked product. Once the funding was raised, he transferred all the funds to himself, leaving nothing to the actual development team to spend on creating KitSentry itself.

Globell launches Kickstarter campaign for new screen calibration device

Globell, a software distributor and the company behind Meyer-Optik Gorlitz lenses, has announced it plans to introduce a new screen calibration device if it gets enough support from the Kickstarter campaign it has just begun. The company claims its proposed globellColorMeter can calibrate almost any computer monitor in three steps that take less than five minutes, and that the device will remain accurate for years.

The meter uses a lens developed with Meyer-Optik and a glass cover that won’t dis-color, according to Globell. Designed and built in Germany, the company says its device offers an alternative to calibration systems that are ‘technically ambitious but complicated and expensive to use‘ or ‘easy to use and affordable, but unable to function at a sufficiently high standard‘. Globell describes the globellColor, which comes with software for PC and Mac, as ‘affordable‘ and ‘the most precise, easy-to-use product in its price range‘.

The company expects the product to retail at $ 250, but is offering early-bird deals from $ 99. For more information see the Kickstarter page.

Peak Design launches Everyday backpack, tote and sling bags on Kickstarter

Peak Design has launched four new bags in its Everyday product line: the Everyday Backpack in 20L and 30L sizes, the Everyday Tote, and the Everyday Sling. All four bags are offered in two different configurations, one Charcoal in color with black trim and red accents, the other Ash with black trim, blue accents, and leather accents. 

Peak Design says its new bags, while ideal for photographers, ‘ain’t just camera bags,’ hence the Everyday moniker. The array of bags are made from weather-resistant materials and integrate protective design elements including both ultra-thick felt and high-density compression-molded EVA materials. The Everyday bags can be customized via the removable FlexFold dividers, are ‘loaded’ with storage spaces, and offer expanding internal structures with a system for attaching items to the bags’ exteriors.

The new Everyday bags are currently being funded on Kickstarter where the campaign has reached nearly double its $ 500k funding goal with 58 days remaining. Peak Design estimates it will deliver bags to backers this coming December.

Lensbaby Circular 180+ ultra-wide-angle GoPro lens launches on Kickstarter

Lensbaby has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Lensbaby Circular 180+, a lens that attaches to a GoPro Hero’s waterproof housing. The Circular 180+ has an ultra-wide 185° field-of-view and features ‘tack sharp edge-to-edge focus,’ according to Lensbaby, as well as ‘intense depth’ and rugged construction.

The new lens is designed specifically for GoPro’s Hero action cameras, attaching to the waterproof housing with a mount that screws tightly into place. The lens housing is likewise waterproof with an IP68 standard rating, enabling it to handle ‘extended immersion’ to depths down to 3m/9.8ft. The lens is joined by a water-resistant mount, and there’s a waterproof add-on mount as well. Compatibility includes the GoPro Hero, Hero+, Hero+ LCD, and the current standard housing, which supports the Hero4 Silver and Black, Hero3+, and Hero3.

Lensbaby is seeking $ 30,000 in funding on Kickstarter, where the Circular 180+ lens is offered at various price points as low as $ 69. Backers are expected to receive their orders in August 2016, assuming the funding campaign is successful.

Meyer-Optik launches Kickstarter campaign for 50mm ‘Soap Bubble Bokeh’ Trioplan lens

German optical manufacturer Meyer-Optik Gorlitz has begun a Kickstarter campaign to raise funds to produce a modern 50mm F2.9 version of its Trioplan lens. The Trioplan design is known for its exaggerated circular bokeh which earned it the nickname ‘Soap Bubble Lens’ in its original version. The company has recently released a 100mm F2.8 Trioplan after a similar Kickstarter campaign that raised almost $ 360,000. On this occasion the company is hoping to reach an initial target of $ 50,000 – which is going swimmingly, as it met that goal within hours of the campaign going live.

The new lens will be an updated version of the company’s original 50mm Trioplan but using glass from the Schott factory and with modern coatings and production standards. The new 50mm Trioplan also has a movable front element that allows much better close focusing and a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:4.

The lens uses a basic Triplet design with three elements in three groups with a 12-bladed iris designed to help produce smooth and circular out-of-focus highlights at all apertures.

Meyer Optik plans to produce the manual focus lens in mounts for:

  • Nikon F
  • Sony
  • FujiX
  • Micro Four Thirds
  • M42
  • Leica M (rangefinder not supported/focusing via live view)

Lomography Daguerreotype Achromat 2.9/64 Art Lens launches on Kickstarter

Lomography is seeking funds in its latest Kickstarter campaign to bring into production a Daguerreotype Achromat F2.9 to F16 65mm Art Lens, a recreation of the first photographic optic lens from 1839. The lens is designed to work with modern analog and digital cameras, and will be available in Canon EF and Nikon F mounts with support for ‘multitudes of other cameras using adapter mounts.’

The 64mm Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens will be available with black and brass finishes, and will support Micro Four Thirds cameras, the Fujifilm X-Pro1, Sony Alpha cameras and others using adapter mounts. An array of special effects are produced via Waterhouse Aperture plates; they range from what is described as an ‘ethereal soft focus’ at apertures below F4 to sharper effects with deep contrasts at aperture F5.6 and greater.

The special effects are created by inserting Waterhouse Aperture plates into a slot in the lens, positioning the plate in front of the lens elements. Three sets of plates are supported: Standard, Lumière, and Aquarelle. The latter two sets, Lumière and Aquarelle, were created by Lomography for this particular lens to create different effects in out-of-focus highlights.

By pledging to Lommography’s Kickstarter, supporters can reserve an early copy of the Daguerreotype Achromat Art Lens, though certain backing options have been sold out, such as the brass ‘super early bird’ launch deal. Remaining pledge options include $ 400 for a brass or black-finish lens, $ 500 for a low serial number Nikon mount brass lens and $ 550 for an earlier September 2016 shipment rather than the later December shipment, among others.

Meyer Optik to bring back soap-bubble-bokeh Trioplan lens via Kickstarter

Following a successful Kickstar campaign, German optical manufacturer Meyer Optik is set to reintroduce a lens from 1916 that was famous for its unique ‘soap-bubble’ bokeh. The company hoped to raise $ 50,000 to fund production of a new Trioplan 100mm F2.8 lens, but at the time of writing pledges have reached $ 124,000 with the best part of a month still to go. Miggo Agua IPX3 storm-proof camera bags launch on Kickstarter

Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens launched on Kickstarter

Lomography has launched its new Petzval 58 Bokeh Control Art Lens, the second lens it has introduced based on the Petzval optic invented by Joseph Petzval in 1840. This newest Petzval lens features Russian glass optics, is constructed by hand, and is offered in a brass finish. The lens results in photographs with a ‘swirly bokeh,’ and the strength of the effect can be controlled via a Bokeh Control Ring, a feature not available in Lomography’s existing 85mm Petzval.
