GoPro Karma Grip gimbal now available as stand-alone product

06 Dec

GoPro’s Karma Grip motorized gimbal mount was first released as part of the Karma drone kit.  Unfortunately, GoPro had to recall the Karma drone due to problems with its power supply, but now the company has made the Karma Grip available as a stand-alone product.

The Karma grip is compatible directly with the GoPro Hero 5 Black and needs an adapter for Hero 4 Black and Silver models and the Hero Session 5. The motorized gimbal is used to stabilize video while walking or during other outdoor activities, when smoother footage is required than the cameras’ built-in electronic stabilization can produce. The camera can be charged and transfer data to a computer while mounted on the grip.

The grip can be handheld or attached to GoPro’s chest harness, Seeker backpack, helmet mounts and other camera supports. It’s available now for $ 300.

GoPro ‘restructuring’ effort will layoff 200 full-time employees

01 Dec

GoPro has announced plans to restructure the company, saying it will layoff 200 full-time workers, close its entertainment division, reduce its facilities, and cancel open positions. By doing these things, GoPro will reduce its workforce by 15% and will, it anticipates, reduce its non-GAAP operating expenses next year.

GoPro announced the news today as part of its quarterly earnings report. According to the company, GoPro camera sales in the U.S. were up more than 35% this past Black Friday in comparison to the same time period last year. However, its turbulent financial state over the past year has spurred the company to make some big changes.

In addition to shedding 15% of its workforce, GoPro President Tony Bates will step down from his position at the end of 2016. GoPro didn’t provide a reason for his departure. Assuming all goes as planned, GoPro expects to reach non-GAAP profitability next year, with its full 2017 non-GAAP operating expenses dropping to about $ 650 million.

Solid Holiday Demand In The U.S. For GoPro HERO5

Nov 30, 2016

Week of Black Friday Camera Unit Sales Up 35% YoY in U.S.
Company Restructuring to Reduce Operating Expenses and Improve Efficiency

SAN MATEO, Calif., Nov. 30, 2016 /PRNewswire/ — GoPro Inc. (NASDAQ: GPRO) today announced solid holiday quarter sell-thru in the U.S. for its new HERO5 cameras.

Based on internal data, GoPro’s week of Black Friday camera unit sales were up more than 35% year-over-year at leading U.S. retailers. Thanksgiving through Cyber Monday sales of camera units at GoPro.com were up approximately 33% year-over-year. According to the NPD Group, since the launch on October 2, HERO5 Black has been the best-selling Digital Imaging device in the United States.

HERO5 cameras are available at major US retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, Target and Walmart.

“We have a lot of work to do to finish the quarter and our fiscal year, however our HERO5 cameras have been very well-received by critics and consumers alike,” said Nicholas Woodman, Founder & CEO of GoPro. “Both HERO5 cameras can now auto-offload new content to the cloud and our Quik mobile app makes accessing and editing your footage fun. Its clear consumers are excited about these new features.”

GoPro also announced a company-wide restructuring that will reduce full-year 2017 non-GAAP operating expenses to approximately $ 650 million (GAAP: $ 735 million) and achieve its goal of returning to non-GAAP profitability in 2017. The restructuring includes the closure of its entertainment division, facilities reductions, and the elimination of more than 200 full-time positions plus the cancelation of open positions for a reduction in force of approximately 15 percent.

Additionally, Tony Bates will depart his position as president of the Company at the end of the year. “My time at GoPro has been an incredible experience,” said Tony Bates. “In the past three years, GoPro has seen enormous progress in camera technology, software and international growth. Today GoPro has a solid leadership team deeply focused on its core business and profitability.”

GoPro estimates that it will incur total aggregate charges of approximately $ 24 million to $ 33 million for the restructuring, including approximately $ 13 million to $ 18 million of cash expenditures as a result of the workforce restructuring, substantially all of which are severance costs, and approximately $ 11 million to $ 15 million of non-cash expenditures, consisting primarily of stock-based compensation expense and accelerated depreciation associated with office consolidations. The company expects to recognize most of the restructuring charges in Q4 2016.

“Consumer demand for GoPro is solid and we’ve sharply narrowed our focus to concentrate on our core business,” said Nicholas Woodman. “We are headed into 2017 with a powerful global brand, our best ever products, and a clear roadmap for restored growth and profitability in 2017.”

GoPro compensates Karma drone users with free HERO5 cam for recall

22 Nov

At the beginning of November action-cam maker GoPro announced a recall of its new Karma drone after a small number of the approximately 2500 units sold lost power during operation. GoPro stressed that even those users whose drones appeared to be operating normally should stop using them immediately.

Now at least US buyers of the Karma will receive some sort of compensation for going through the troubles of returning the drone and having to find a replacement. GoPro is offering American Karma buyers a free HERO5 Black action cam once they return the drone and all accessories. Presumably, apart from making customers happy, this move should also speed up the return process and ensure as many of the faulty drones as possible make it back to GoPro. The company says it is planning to start shipping the Karma again as soon as the issue is resolved.

How fast were you going? GoPro HERO5 Black videos can now include GPS and telemetry data overlays

19 Nov

GoPro has updated its Quik desktop software with a new feature that enables HERO5 Black camera owners to overlay GPS and telemetry data onto their videos. This data is gathered by the camera’s various sensors during recording, and provides an extra layer of information for viewers, including things like the date and time the video was recorded, the altitude, elevation gain, and distance in miles or kilometers.

The data overlays are customizable, and include resizable graphs and the ability to choose which data is included in the video. In addition to the aforementioned data, the overlays can also include a compass to show the camera’s orientation, speed, a speed graph with activity spikes, the GPS path and position pinpoints, and G-Force levels.

The Quik desktop editing software is available for 64-bit PCs running Windows 7 or newer and Macs running macOS 10.10.X or later. PCs are advised to have at least an Intel Core i3 processor and Macs should have at least an Intel Dual Core, though Core i7 processors are recommended for both.

Go hands-free: GoHawk offers bite-triggered remote shutter for GoPro

16 Jun

Mounting your GoPro on your chest or helmet frees up your hands for all those extreme moments you’d like to capture, but when you still need to operate the shutter, are you truly hands-free? The GoHawk by Oregon-based POA Labs wants to help.

Currently in prototype form, the GoHawk is an accessory kit that includes three remote shutter options: a handlebar, tongue and bite switch. The GoHawk is also designed to tell its user when the GoPro is actually recording via an LED indicator light that can be positioned inside of a helmet. Also included is an auxiliary USB power port for extended shooting.

The unit is compatible with the GoPro Hero4 and essentially works like a camera cable release – that is triggering the switch via, your teeth, tongue or finger will allow you to record video, shoot single exposures or trigger a burst. The LED indicator light will be illuminated red while the GoPro is recording video or shooting stills and blue while the unit is on standby.

POA Labs is seeking a total of $ 20,000 in funding. The unit and a single type of switch (your choice) is offered with a $ 131 pledge. Backers of the GoHawk can expect their units to ship in September 2016 if the funding campaign is a success.

GoPro shooters and filmmakers would surely welcome the ability to trigger and monitor recording without lifting a finger. For more information, check out the Kickstarter page.

Vitrima lens aims to bring low-cost 3D video capture to GoPro action cameras

01 Jun

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_0450741422″,”galleryId”:”0450741422″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Looking to bring more excitement to your POV snowboarding videos? A new case called Vitrima is in the works, which would enable GoPro action cameras to record 3D video. The lens attachment uses mirrors to deliver two images to the GoPro camera’s own lens. The resulting resulting stereoscopic videos appear to be 3D when viewed through a VR viewer like Google Cardboard or the Gear VR.

The Vitrima lens is waterproof and will ship already attached to a standard GoPro camera housing, and can also be used with various mounts. Because the lens is simply composed of carefully arranged mirrors, it works out of the box without any software. Though the resulting videos won’t feature 3D audio, the lens – which will cost $ 50 when the product launches – presents a low-cost way for someone to record 3D videos without purchasing a dedicated 3D camera like the $ 799 Vuze VR camera.

The website lists Vitrima as ‘launching soon.’

Lensbaby Circular 180+ ultra-wide-angle GoPro lens launches on Kickstarter

25 May

Lensbaby has launched a Kickstarter campaign for the Lensbaby Circular 180+, a lens that attaches to a GoPro Hero’s waterproof housing. The Circular 180+ has an ultra-wide 185° field-of-view and features ‘tack sharp edge-to-edge focus,’ according to Lensbaby, as well as ‘intense depth’ and rugged construction.

The new lens is designed specifically for GoPro’s Hero action cameras, attaching to the waterproof housing with a mount that screws tightly into place. The lens housing is likewise waterproof with an IP68 standard rating, enabling it to handle ‘extended immersion’ to depths down to 3m/9.8ft. The lens is joined by a water-resistant mount, and there’s a waterproof add-on mount as well. Compatibility includes the GoPro Hero, Hero+, Hero+ LCD, and the current standard housing, which supports the Hero4 Silver and Black, Hero3+, and Hero3.

Lensbaby is seeking $ 30,000 in funding on Kickstarter, where the Circular 180+ lens is offered at various price points as low as $ 69. Backers are expected to receive their orders in August 2016, assuming the funding campaign is successful.

Ready for takeoff: GoPro records rocket trip into space

06 May

While you’re waiting for Space X to get you into orbit, there’s an easier way to enjoy an otherworldly view. A GoPro HERO 4 camera was used to record a UP Aerospace Inc. SL-10 rocket’s travel into space, showing the flight at speeds of up to Mach 5.5 from Earth to an altitude of 120,700m / 396,000ft and back again. The video was recorded on November 6, 2015 during a mission to deploy the Maraia Capsule designed by NASA, and was recently showcased by GoPro on its YouTube channel.

This isn’t the first time GoPro’s action cameras have been used to record space missions. In April 2015, for example, NASA published a pair of videos showing astronauts on a spacewalk, both of which were recorded using the small action cameras. A GoPro was also used to record Felix Baumartner’s ‘Red Bull Stratos,’ a space jump that took place 24 miles above Earth.

GoPro to discontinue three cameras and exit entry-level market

06 Feb

This week, GoPro announced it will discontinue three of its six available action cameras and abandon the entry-level market. This follows the company’s preliminary fourth quarter results revealed last month. GoPro had stated at the time that poor holiday sales would likely result in low quarterly revenue, and that it would layoff 7% of its workforce as a result.

In a conference call this week, GoPro’s founder and CEO Nick Woodman said the company’s recent misfortunes aren’t due to increased competition. ‘Growth slowed in the second half of the year,’ said Woodman, ‘and we recognize the need to develop software solutions that make it easier for our customers to offload, access and edit their GoPro content.’

GoPro is banking on the improved software reversing its sales numbers, but it isn’t clear what other plans may be in place. Woodman said the company will be ‘delivering this new experience in 2016, period.’ In the meantime, though, GoPro anticipates its first quarter sales will be below analysts’ $ 300 million expectation, falling between $ 160 and $ 180 million.

GoPro will stop selling its HERO+ LCD, HERO+ and HERO entry-level cameras in April, making the $ 200 HERO4 Session its least expensive model.
