Photo of GoPro Hero6 leaked, will be able to shoot 4K at 60 fps

15 Sep

We’ve already knew the GoPro Hero6 was on the way thanks to company CEO Nick Woodman, who revealed the camera’s existence back in February. But a newly leaked photo of the Hero6 reveals one very exciting feature we didn’t know about: the little camera will allegedly be able to shoot 4K at 60fps.

The leaked photo was sent to Photo Rumors by a reader of theirs, and as with any unofficial leak, it’s worth taking the image with a grain of salt. But if it is legitimate, this is what the GoPro Hero6 will look like in its final packaging:

If the packaging is legitimate, we can see that the Hero6 is waterproof to 10m, takes 12MP photographs, and can shoot video at 4K and 60fps. The current Hero5 maxes out at 4K 30fps, which puts it at a disadvantage when you compare it to cheaper action cameras like the Yi 4K, which shoots 4K 60fps and costs just $ 340.

The Hero6 will very likely cost more than this—even the Hero5 still goes for $ 400—but with more accessories to choose from and a brand name people recognize, it might just convince some Yi fans to return to the mothership.

GoPro launches QuikStories feature for automated story-telling

27 Jul

GoPro’s Quik app for making short and shareable videos from your GoPro footage has been available for a while. Now the new QuikStories feature is taking things one step further by generating clips automatically and making them as easy as possible to share on social media and get them off your GoPro’s memory card.

QuickStories is integrated into the latest version of the GoPro app. After a day of shooting video with your GoPro the app will search your camera for new clips and automatically create a shareable version, complete with edits and music. It’ll also picks brief elements from longer clips and you can still interfere manually though and change the order of clips or the music. You can also add other media from your phone into the mix if you want to.

As you would expect, QuikStories integrates with most social networks you already have on your phone but you can also export the finalized video to use it in any way you want. The video below gives you a pretty good idea of how the feature works.

GoPro is testing its Fusion 360 VR camera with major broadcasters

12 Jul

GoPro unveiled its Fusion 360 VR 5.2K pro-grade spherical video camera back in April. But while it’s till not available to buy, the company has launched a program that will see the Fusion 360 VR being tested with major broadcasting partners that GoPro says were selected based on their experiences with 360-degree storytelling.

The broadcasters include Fox Sports, the NBA team Golden State Warriors, USA Today and Getty Images, but also some lesser known organizations and individuals, such as AccuWeather, Digital Domain, Legend 3D, Rapid VR, RYOT and travel blogger Louis Cole.

It’s probably fair to assume the test program is designed to not only try out the functions and capabilities of the new camera, but also increase its visibility among the general public before it becomes available in retail stores later this year. GoPro no doubt hopes Fusion 360 sales will make up some of the ground they’ve lost in the conventional action camera market.

In any case, if you are following any of the GoPro partners mentioned above on social media, be prepared to find more professional-grade 360-degree content in their streams soon. The video of the Golden State Warriors championship parade below is a good first taste.

Video: Journalist survives ISIS sniper attack, his GoPro does not

23 May

In the terrifying video above, Iraqi journalist Ammar Alwaely narrowly escapes a sniper’s bullet, which takes out his chest-mounted GoPro. From the YouTube description:

Journalist Ammar Alwaely, was working in Mosul Iraq, when a sniper’s bullet hit his GoPro camera. The camera, which was a gift from one of his co-workers, almost certainly saved Mr. Alwaely’s life. Ammar received treatment for minor cuts, but was otherwise unharmed.

Ammar and his companions seem to be setting up for a shot and in good spirits right before the bullet rips across the screen. The sniper’s fire clearly catches the group off guard. At about the 0:33 point in the clip, the English-speaking individual filming asks where the bullet came from (caution, strong language).

We’re not sure that the GoPro actually saved his life, but Ammar did live to tell the tale (we wonder if his micro SD card survived as well). The attack took place on May 13th and the video was post on the 17th – at the time of publishing it has been viewed nearly three quarters of a million times.

GoPro launches camera trade-up program in the US

11 Apr

Action-camera manufacturer GoPro has launched a trade-up program for its US-customers. Existing GoPro owners can receive $ 100 off a new HERO5 Black, or $ 50 off a HERO5 Session when they trade in any older GoPro HERO model.

To participate in the program you should visit the Trade-up website, select the new camera of your choice, and follow instructions to return your old camera. Once GoPro has received the latter, it will process the discount and send you a brand-new HERO5 Black or HERO5 Session camera.  The company says returned cameras will be recycled responsibly via zero landfill and recycling methods appropriate to material type.

“Our HERO5 cameras are the best we’ve ever made. And when paired with GoPro’s new software, they unlock the simplest, most powerful mobile storytelling solution yet,” said CJ Prober, GoPro’s Chief Operating Officer. “Our Trade-Up Program allows us to introduce existing customers to the modern GoPro experience and prepare our community for the new software enhancements ahead.”

The HERO5 Black and HERO5 Session currently retail for $ 399.99 and $ 299.99, so the trade-in discount can cut a nice chunk from that. If you own an older GoPro and like the idea of trading it in, you can find all the information on the GoPro website.

GoPro to cut 270 jobs as part of restructuring effort

17 Mar

GoPro plans to eliminate another 270 jobs, the company revealed in its Q1 2017 guidance report, via a combination of layoffs and open position cancellations. The workforce reduction follows a similar layoff of 200 workers announced in November 2016, and is part of a larger business restructuring effort to cut costs and maintain profitability.

According to the new guidance report, GoPro is ‘tracking to full-year non-GAAP profitability in 2017.’ The company anticipates taking on about $ 10 million in severance charges as part of its layoff, a cost that will be factored into its first quarter financial results. Overall, the company estimates that it will announce between $ 190 and $ 210 million in Q1 2017 revenue.

GoPro has increasingly reduced its focus to its core products, a move that necessitated the recent elimination of its entertainment division, as well as reductions in some of its facilities. Last November, company CEO Nicholas Woodman stated, ‘We are headed into 2017 with a powerful global brand, our best ever products, and a clear roadmap for restored growth and profitability in 2017.’

Despite recent stumbles, GoPro still plans to release HERO6 this year

04 Feb
GoPro’s HERO5 models were delayed last year due to production issues.

Despite having a rough go of it over the last several months, GoPro is still committed to releasing a HERO6 action-cam later this year. The company experienced production delays with its HERO5 action-cam as well as a recall of its Karma drone, so some industry analysts were concerned that GoPro might be moving to a 2-year production cycle.

That’s not the case, according to CEO Nick Woodman, speaking during the company’s earnings call transcript:

“Yes, we can confirm there will be new cameras and other accessories released during the year and new camera namely being HERO6. But we’re not going to share any information as to the timing or any other details around the release of those new products as you can imagine.”

It should come as no surprise that the company is keeping its next-gen HERO under wraps but regardless, it’s good news for action-cam lovers who want the latest and greatest.

GoPro Karma drone goes back up for sale with battery latch fix

02 Feb

Back in early November, GoPro recalled its newly released Karma drone, citing an issue that caused the drone to potentially lose power while in operation. The company announced the relaunch on its blog today, saying the ‘new’ Karma drone is nearly identical to the original model, with only one exception: the battery latch has been redesigned, solving the power loss issue some owners experienced.

Karma features a top speed of 35mph / 56kph and a maximum operating distance of 9,840ft / 3,000m. The drone is compatible with the HERO5 Session and HERO4 Black and Silver cameras via a separately offered harness. Karma by itself is available for $ 799.99 USD, while the drone bundled with the HERO5 Black is $ 1,099.99 USD.

The drone is available now in the U.S., but won’t be arriving for sale in international markets until this upcoming Spring season.

GoPro HERO cameras undergo torture test: a dip in liquid nitrogen

20 Dec

Industrious YouTube user Grant Thompson recently subjected the GoPro HERO5 Session and HERO5 Black cameras to a chilly torture test: dunks in liquid nitrogen. He first tested the experiment with an older Session camera, hoping to avoid the destruction of two perfectly good new cameras if death proved swift. However, the older Session held up surprisingly well, and so he put the two new cameras to the test, literally freezing them solid. See the results in the video above.
