Sony is now #2 in the US full-frame interchangeable lens camera market

15 Apr

Sony has announced that it is now ranked second in the U.S. full-frame interchangeable lens camera market, a position formerly held by Nikon. The data comes from The NPD Group, which shows a 23% increase in Sony’s full-frame interchangeable lens cameras and lenses sales this year. According to Sony, its ‘key models,’ including the a7R II and a7S II, were large factors behind this increase.

As the graph above demonstrates, the full-frame interchangeable lens camera market as a whole benefitted from Sony’s success; without it, the overall market would have experienced a 2% decrease year-on-year. Such data is based on NPD Group’s sales figures for Sony from January and February 2017.

Irix introduces super wide-angle 11mm for full-frame DSLRs

21 Feb

New optics manufacturer Irix has announced a second extreme wide-angle lens for full-frame DSLR users that will join the existing 15mm F2.4. The new lens is a manual focus 11mm F4 which will come in two versions – Blackstone and Firefly – like the company’s first lens.

Constructed using 16 elements arranged in 10 groups the lens offers a nine-bladed iris with apertures from F4 to F22. Electrical contacts allow users to control aperture values from the camera body and for aperture values to be recorded in EXIF data.

Irix says this new 126° lens is unique because it exhibits only 3.13% curvilinear distortion on a full-frame sensor and shows test images to back up the claim, along with MTF charts that describe the expected resolution.

Available in mounts for Canon, Nikon and Pentax the lens is weather-sealed and comes in rugged or lightweight versions. The Firefly model is 12% lighter than the Blackstone, but the Blackstone is made from aluminum-magnesium alloy, features a metal-grooved focusing ring and has an anti-scratch coating. Those working in low light conditions might be glad of the Blackstone’s engaged markings that glow in the dark. As the forward element of both versions is so large, and the angle of view so extreme, the company has integrated a filter slot at the back of the lens for 30x30mm gelatin filters.

There is no indication yet when the lens will begin shipping but it is listed for sale on the company’s US website, with the Blackstone version costing $ 825 and the Firefly $ 595.
For more information see the Irix website.

STC offers clip-on light pollution filter for full-frame Nikon DSLRs

24 Dec

Taiwan-based filter maker STC is offering an Astro-Multispectra Clip Filter for several full-frame Nikon DSLR cameras, aiding photographers in filtering light pollution during astrophotography sessions. The filter is designed to clip over the camera’s sensor, and is made with Schott B270 optical glass coated using IBAD technology, including an anti-smudge nanocoating. When used, the Clip Filter ‘significantly reduces’ artificial lighting produced by things like street lights.

The STC Astro-Multispectra Clip Filter is compatible with the Nikon D4, D4s, D800, D800E, D810, D810A, D750, D600, and D610. The item is sold by Cyclops Optics for $ 1,620 Hong Kong dollars, or about $ 209 USD. The company offers worldwide shipping.

Editor’s note: An earlier version of this article incorrectly stated that the filter was made by Cyclops Optics.

Zeiss adds 85mm F2.4 to Loxia line for full-frame E-mount

16 Sep

Zeiss has just added an 85mm F2.4 to its Loxia range for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras. The 85mm brings a traditional portrait option to the 35mm F2, 50mm F2 and 21mm F2.8 existing models in the lineup. The manual focus lens offers the aperture de-click feature found on its siblings and promises ‘virtually distortion-free’ optics. The Zeiss Loxia 85mm F2.4 will go on sale in mid-December for $ 1399/€1399.

Press release:

Telephoto lens for the ZEISS Loxia family

With the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85, the optics company expands its compact lens family for mirrorless Sony full-frame cameras with E mount

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 15/09/2016.

The newest member of the ZEISS Loxia family is a short telephoto lens called the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85. It supplements three focal lengths that are already available for this lens family, namely the ZEISS Loxia 2.8/21, Loxia 2/35 and Loxia 2/50, and was specially designed for mirrorless full-frame cameras with E mount. The compact ZEISS Loxia lenses are the ideal choice for travel and street photographers who value light and compact camera equipment. “In terms of its technology and the feel of its surface, the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 fits perfectly with the existing focal lengths, and is particularly well suited for portrait photography,” said Christophe Casenave, product manager with ZEISS Camera Lenses. The ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 will be available in stores starting mid of December 2016.

Optimized ZEISS Sonnar® design

The new ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 has been designed for digital sensors. Based on an optimized ZEISS Sonnar design, it has seven lens elements in seven groups. “With the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85, we have managed to develop a well-rounded and new interpretation of the original ZEISS Sonnar optical design that meets all the requirements of digital photography and videography,” continued Casenave. The lens has a minimum object distance of 0.80 meters and a manual focus ring with a rotation angle of 220 degrees, enabling the subtlest variations of focusing. The large aperture of f/2.4 combined with the high-quality optical design ensures an appealing bokeh. The electronic interface transfers both lens data (EXIF) and focus movements, and activates the magnification function of the camera if desired by the user. “Precise manual focusing with hard stop and the mechanical setting of the aperture (working aperture priority mode) provide sophisticated photographers who don’t want to leave everything to the camera abundant possibilities for composition,” said Casenave.

Also suitable for cine applications

With the well-known De-Click function of the ZEISS Loxia lenses, the optics company is also targeting videographers. The De-Click function allows to mechanically deactivate the click stops on the aperture ring — a condition for silent and smooth adjustments of the aperture. As a result, the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 is also an attractive lens for video cameras that have an E mount, such as the Sony PXW-FS7 and PXW-FS5. A robust metal barrel, the filter diameter of M52 (which is identical across all focal lengths) and protection against penetration of dust and spray onto the lens mount complete the entire package. In addition, the external diameter, which is uniform across all ZEISS Loxia lenses, simplifies film shoots.

ZEISS Lens Gears

ZEISS Loxia lenses can also be used with a follow focus system. Made of high-quality aluminum with a hardened surface coating, the ZEISS Lens Gears are slid onto each respective lens and, through simple mounting, attached to the focus ring of the lens by turning two rings that each go in the opposite direction. Supplemented by a follow focus system, precise focusing is therefore possible and ZEISS Loxia lenses become endowed with similar features as a full-scale cine lens. The ZEISS Lens Gear Rings in the sizes mini (62 – 69mm, 60 – 67mm with GumGum) fit the ZEISS Loxia lenses.

Price and availability

Global delivery of the ZEISS Loxia 2.4/85 will begin mid of December 2016. The lens shade is included with delivery. The recommended retail sales price is 1,399 euros (including 19% VAT in Germany) or 1,399 US$ .

Canon announces full-frame EOS 5D Mark IV with 30MP sensor and Dual Pixel AF

26 Aug

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_5442532975″,”galleryId”:”5442532975″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”standalone”:false,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”startInCommentsView”:false,”isMobile”:false}) });

Canon has officially announced the EOS 5D Mark IV, the fourth generation of its full-frame DSLR for enthusiast and professional photographers. Built around a 30MP Dual Pixel AF sensor, it significantly extends the still and video capabilities the series has become known for.

The 30MP Dual Pixel CMOS sensor allows for fast phase-detection autofocus in video and—for the first time in a Canon full-frame body—continuous focus for stills shooting in live view. Video can be captured in the DCI (4096 x 2160) 4K format at up to 30p (and up to 60p in 1080, and 120p in 720). 4K video is captured in the high quality but inefficient Motion JPEG format.

The camera’s AF coverage, sensitivity and lens compatibility has been expanded in-line with the EOS-1D X Mark II and the maximum frame rate boosted to seven frames per second. The 5D IV also becomes the first model to capture separate data from the dual photodiodes that make up each pixel, enabling some innovative post-processing options to correct for minor focus errors or remove lens ghosting.

The EOS 5D Mark IV will go on sale in early September with an MSRP of $ 3499. Kits with the 24-70mm F4L IS will ship at around the same time for $ 4399, while a 24-105mm F4L IS II USM kit follows in late October for $ 4599.

2016 Roundup: $1200-2000 part 2: Full-Frame Interchangeable Lens Cameras

09 Jun

For those wanting to step up from entry-level to midrange ILCs, there are many things to consider, including the choice between a DSLR or mirrorless camera, what sensor size suits you best, how important video is to you, and of course the lens system.

While full-frame cameras typically offer superior low light image quality and more control over depth-of-field, crop-sensor cameras are extremely capable in their own right – and (usually) more compact and less costly.

We’ve split the $ 1200-2000 ILC marketplace into two segments – full-frame sensor cameras (discussed in this roundup) and crop-sensor (APS-C/Four Thirds) covered here.

This group of full-frame cameras is split right down the middle, with three DSLRs and three mirrorless models. Sony is, by far, the major player in the full-frame mirrorless market, with most of the other manufacturers sticking with DSLRs.

Here are the cameras we’ll cover in this enthusiast full-frame roundup:

  • Canon EOS 6D
  • Nikon D610
  • Pentax K-1
  • Sony Alpha a7
  • Sony Alpha a7 II
  • Sony Alpha a7R

New FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS Telephoto Zoom Lens

Sony’s longest reaching E-mount lens to date, the new FE 70-300mm F4.5 – 5.6 G OSS telephoto zoom lens (model SEL70300G) features a state-of-the-art optical design including four aspherical glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and Sony’s Nano AR coating, which all work together to effectively suppress spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration.  This ensures beautiful high-resolution results for both still and video shooting.

The lens features a new optical design with an aspherical element that effectively compensates for all forms of aberration, resulting in beautiful, crisp imagery.   Additionally, it has a circular aperture with a maximum of F1.8, producing beautiful ‘bokeh’ in images that allows the subject to stand out against a smoothly defocused background.  For extended durability, the new prime lens is built with a solid metal mount.

HD PENTAX-D FA 15-30mm f/2.8ED SDM WR lens will be available in April 2016 at www.ricohimaging.com and retail outlets nationwide for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $ 1,499.99.

Main Features

1. Exceptional imaging power

When mounted on the PENTAX K-1 35mm full-frame digital SLR camera body, the lens provides an ultra-wide-angle focal-length coverage from 15mm to 30mm. Its exaggerated perspective helps the photographer produce spectacular landscape photographs. With a 30mm focal length at the telephoto end, the lens is also well-suited to portrait and street photography.

Since this zoom lens provides a maximum aperture of f/2.8 over its entire zoom range, it is versatile enough to be used for many different subjects and scenes, ranging from sweeping landscapes to nightscapes and starry skies. Despite its ultra-wide-angle perspective, it can capture the subject with an excellent bokeh (defocus) effect on the background. Even in macro photography from its minimum focusing distance of 28 centimeters, it can capture subjects with a well-defined sense of depth.

4. Built-in SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor)

The incorporation of a new-generation SDM (Supersonic Direct-drive Motor) assures that this zoom lens provides quiet, high-speed autofocus operation, letting the photographer react swiftly to all types of subjects.

5. Weather-resistant construction

Special seals applied throughout the lens body provide this zoom lens with dependable weather-resistant construction, effectively preventing the intrusion of water into the lens interior. By pairing it with a weather-resistant PENTAX digital SLR camera body, the photographer has a durable, dependable digital imaging system that performs superbly under demanding shooting conditions — even in the rain or mist, or at locations prone to water splashes or spray.

6. HD Coating to improve image description

The lens is treated with high-grade, multi-layer HD (high-definition) coating. Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, this PENTAX-original coating assures higher light transmittance and less reflection to deliver bright, high-contrast images free of flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlight.

7. Other features

  • Quick-Shift Focus System for instant switching from autofocus to manual-focus operation, by holding the shutter-release button halfway down and turning the focus ring after the subject is captured in focus by the camera’s AF system.
  • Rounded diaphragm with nine blades produces a smooth, beautiful bokeh (defocus) effect, while minimizing the streaking effect of point light sources.
  • SP (Super Protect) coating applied to the front surface of the lens to effectively repel water and grease.
