DxOMark: The full-frame Leica M10 is ‘on par’ with the best APS-C sensors

DxOMark has just finished a new sensor test, and for once it’s not a “highest rated camera in the world” announcement. Instead, the testing and consulting company put the new Leica M10 to the test to see how it compares to the rest of the luxury brand’s lineup. The results: they’re calling it “a classic reinvented.”

Unlike the top-scoring Nikon D850 and Sony a7R III—both of which scored 100 and sit at the top of DxO’s full-frame sensor rankings—the M10 pulls in a meeker score of 86. However, that still makes it the second highest scoring Leica ever, just behind the Leica SL with an overall score of 88.

What’s intriguing is that, in terms of sensor performance, the Leica M10 actually scores “more on par” with the best APS-C chips DxO has tested, outperforming them significantly only in the low-light ISO category thanks to its physically larger sensor:

DxO summed up these results well for us in an email:

Overall, better image quality can be found elsewhere for less money, but the Leica offers first-class engineering, and a digital camera with similar proportions to analog M cameras will be hugely appealing to Leica enthusiasts. Add to that compatibility with almost all Leica lenses ever made, as well as its simplicity of operation, and the M10 will be an attractive proposition to those who appreciate the quality of the Leica system.

No doubt a good chunk of our readers will bold-face and underline what DxO said above: “better image quality can be found elsewhere for less money.” But does the massive lens library, top-notch engineering, ‘simplicity of operation,’ and that pretty red dot help balance out the cost at all?

Sony a7R III ties Nikon D850: Best mirrorless full-frame camera DxOMark has ever tested

DxOMark has just published their review of the Sony a7RIII’s sensor, and no surprises here: it ties the Nikon D850 as the best full-frame camera they’ve ever tested with a score of 100. This also makes it the best mirrorless full-frame camera DxOMark has ever tested, besting the former king, the Sony a7R II, which scored a 98.

From the moment Sony debuted the a7R III, it became clear there was only one competitor for this mirrorless beast: The Nikon D850. And as DxO makes clear in their review headline, the D850 has now met “its mirrorless match.” In fact, it would be a stretch to call one of the cameras better overall than the other. Here’s how their scores break down:

As DxOMark makes clear in its conclusion, which camera you prefer (or should prefer) has to do with your own use case:

Comparing the A7R III sensor to the Nikon D850’s reveals the advantage that the Nikon camera’s lower minimum sensitivity (ISO) value brings. Photographers who predominantly shoot in bright light or capture motionless subjects with the camera on a tripod will record the most information, be it color, tone, or detail with the Nikon D850 set to ISO 32. However, if they require values above that, the Sony A7R III sensor produces marginally better images.

By now it should be obvious why the Sony a7RIII tied with the Nikon D850 for our best camera above $ 2,000: it’s next to impossible to pick one over the other unless you have a specific use case in mind. Ricoh announces new lenses for both APS-C and full-frame Pentax cameras

The two lenses Ricoh has announced today are part of the company’s Star-series line of high-performance lenses, being designed from the ground up for use with higher megapixel DSLR camera bodies.

Let’s start with the HD Pentax-DA* 11-18mm F2.8. Designed for crop-sensor cameras such as the Pentax KP, K70 and K-3 II, it offers an equivalent focal range of 17-27.5mm with a constant F2.8 aperture. Pricing has yet to be disclosed, and you have a bit of a wait if you’re interested in this lens; availability is scheduled for the summer of 2018.

Up next will be of particular interest to Pentax K-1 users. The HD Pentax-D FA* 50mm F1.4 SDM AW is designed for full-frame image sensors, and is the first new prime lens Ricoh’s announced for the K-1 since that camera was released. To go with the K-1’s rugged design, the FA* 50mm F1.4 comes with all-weather construction, and also a newly developed supersonic direct-drive autofocus motor for both faster and quieter AF operation. The FA* 50mm F1.4’s pricing is also unavailable, though it’s scheduled to be released a little sooner in the spring of 2018.

Samyang unveils 35mm F1.4 autofocus lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless

Samyang has officially unveiled its fourth autofocus lens for Sony FE mount cameras: the long-rumored Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 FE. The new 35mm joins Samyang’s three other AF lenses—the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE, AF 35mm f/2.8 FE and AF 50mm f/1.4 FE—and offers Sony full-frame mirrorless shooters yet another affordable (and fast) prime to shoot with.

As with all previous Samyang autofocus FE lenses, the company claims that they offer exceptional image quality across the whole image field.

This particular lens features 11 lens elements in 9 groups, including 2 aspherical lenses and 2 high-refractive lenses. At its core is a 9 (circular) blade aperture that opens up all the way to F1.4, and a Linear Super Sonic Motor promises “fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance.”

RED unveils Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor with 17+ stops of dynamic range

RED has just announced its new Monstro 8K VV full-frame sensor for Weapon cameras. The device features a 35.4MP 40.96mm x 21.60mm sensor and is able to record at a full 8K/60fps resolution. RED explains that the Monstro 8K VV replaces its existing DRAGON 8K VV sensor, and that anyone who has ordered the DRAGON 8K VV will be offered the Monstro as of October 5th.

The Monstro 8K VV sensor has full support for RED’s IPP2 image processing pipeline, as well as an “unprecedented dynamic range [of 17+ stops] and breathtaking color accuracy,” according to RED President Jarred Land. When coupled with the Weapon 8K VV, the device can simultaneously record Redcode RAW and either Avid DNxHD/HR or Apple ProRes, likewise offering data speeds up to 300MB/s. Existing carbon fiber Weapon customers have the option of upgrading for $ 29,500, while the new Weapon with the full-frame Monstro sensor is priced at $ 79,500. New orders for the device will start shipping to customers in early 2018.

RED ANNOUNCES THE NEW MONSTRO 8K VV

Today RED announced a new cinematic Full Frame sensor for WEAPON cameras, MONSTRO™ 8K VV. MONSTRO is an evolutionary step beyond the RED DRAGON 8K VV sensor with improvements in image quality, including dynamic range and shadow detail.

New orders will start being fulfilled in early 2018.

RED has also announced a comprehensive service offering for WEAPON carbon fiber camera owners called REDARMOR-W. RED ARMOR-W offers enhanced and extended protection beyond basic RED ARMOR, and also includes one sensor swap each year.

“‘Good’ has never been ‘good enough’ for RED,” says Land. “We put ourselves in the shoes of our customers and see how we can improve how we can support them. RED ARMOR-W builds upon the foundation of our original extended warranty program and includes giving customers the ability to move between sensors based upon their shooting needs.”

Additionally, RED’s enhanced image processing pipeline (IPP2) is now available in-camera for all cameras with HELIUM and MONSTRO sensors through today’s v7.0 release firmware update. IPP2 offers a completely overhauled workflow experience, featuring enhancements such as smoother highlight roll-off, better management of challenging colors, an improved demosaicing algorithm, and more.

Zenit’s full-frame mirrorless camera will use components made by Leica

Following an announcement last month that camera maker Zenit would launch a full-frame camera in 2018, USSRPhoto claims the new Zenit model will be based on the Leica SL full-frame camera. Leica will reportedly make components for the Zenit based on the ones found in its Leica SL camera, but will tailor them specifically for the upcoming Zenit model.

Little is known about Zenit’s plans at this time. In mid-August, an announcement that Zenit would return with a new camera was reportedly made on Moscow Region Radio 1. No camera specifications were provided aside from the fact that it will be a full-frame mirrorless model with a brand-recognizable design and an anticipated 2018 launch date.

We know that the reborn Zenit company won’t try to compete with the industry’s biggest camera makers, and it was stated at the time that a “leading photographic equipment company” would be used to produce some of the new model’s components. That company wasn’t revealed, but assuming USSRPhoto’s leak is correct, it will be Leica.

However, and in speaking to PetaPixel, USSRPhoto said the KMZ Zenit factory in Russia will itself produce the new lenses for this upcoming model, and that work on this project has already started. Though the factory isn’t capable of producing electronic components for the camera (hence Leica’s involvement) it does have the equipment necessary to make its own optics.

Additional information—such as cost, specs, and a more specific release date—still haven’t been revealed.

Nikon Director of Development: ‘If Nikon will go mirrorless, it must be full-frame’

We’ve known for some time now that Nikon is working on a mirrorless camera—in fact, Nikon confirmed this to DPReview directly. But one question has remained tantalizingly unanswered: will it be a full-frame system, or simply an evolution of the old 1-inch Nikon 1 system?

The answer, at least according to one high-level Nikon director, seems to be what we were all hoping for. The mirrorless camera will be full-frame.

This information came to light in an interview with Tetsuro Goto, Director of Laboratory Research and Development at Nikon Japan, who told Chinese website Xitek that, “full frame is the trend. If Nikon will go mirrorless it must be full frame.” A statement that immediately set the photography world on fire with speculation.

Most of it focuses on the Nikon Df and other topics, but page 4 of the interview begins to cover new ground including competition from Sony, Fuji, and the like, and the future of Nikon mirrorless. The other, slightly controversial statement shared by Mr. Tetsuro during the interview had to do with Nikon’s market share and penetration vs the competition (translation courtesy of Nikon Rumors):

Nikon customer base is very broad, from novice to enthusiasts to prosumer to professional, that’s Nikon’s advantage. Olympus, Sony and Fujifilm can only cover a small part of that. So far there is no professional using their products. So when they develop products, even like retro style, they only try to meet these people and that’s only what they can do. Their customer base is limited anyway so they have limited view in developing products.

Nikon patents two full-frame mirrorless lenses: 52mm F0.9 and 36mm F1.2

Nikon users who are out there wishing for a full-frame mirrorless camera from the storied Japanese brand have two more reasons to feel hopeful today. It seems Nikon has filed two new patents for full-frame mirrorless lenses in Japan: one for a Nikon 52mm F0.9, and another for a 36mm F1.2.

The patents were spotted by Japanese site hi-lows-note, and come complete with a few lens diagrams so you can ogle the lens elements while you cross your fingers even tighter.

It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time Nikon has patented a full-frame mirrorless lens—two zoom lenses for FF mirrorless were patented three years apart, one in 2014 and another earlier this year. But while a patent does not a new lens confirm, the more of these lenses Nikon puts on paper, the more hopeful we’ll be that a full-frame Nikon mirrorless camera is on the way.

Sony unveils the Venice, its first full-frame cinema camera system

Sony has just unveiled a new, groundbreaking (at least for them) cinema camera. It’s called the Sony Venice, and it’s the company’s first 36x24mm full-frame digital motion picture camera system.

Designed in “close collaboration with the creative community,” the Venice is the newest generation of Sony’s CineAlta series, which promises natural skin tones, “elegant” highlight handling and wide dynamic range. In the case of the Venice, the camera’s 36x24mm sensor promises 15 stops of latitude to tackle challenging lighting scenarios, and a brand new color management system with ultra wide color gamut for more flexibility in post.

The headline feature is the sensor itself, though. The full-frame chip can be switched out by the camera’s user by simply removing four screws, and at 36x24mm it’s compatible with Anamorphic, Super 35mm, Spherical and Full Frame PL mount lenses. If you’re really feeling frisky, the lens mount can be modified to support E-mount lenses.

Additional features include a built-in 8-stage glass ND filter system, weather sealing, 10-bit XAVC, 16-bit RAW and S-OCN recording via the Sony AXS-R7 recorder, and a modular design that allows you to use the Venice with current and upcoming CineAlta accessories.

The camera is expected to arrive officially in February of 2018, and while Sony didn’t reveal a price, it seems filmmakers will have the option to ‘license’ different builds for specific production requirements like 4K anamorphic and Full Frame. LOS ANGELES, Sept. 6, 2017 — Sony Electronics is unveiling VENICE – its first Full-Frame digital motion picture camera system. VENICE is the next generation of Sony’s CineAlta camera systems, designed to expand the filmmaker’s creative freedom through immersive, large-format, Full Frame capture of filmic imagery producing natural skin tones, elegant highlight handling and wide dynamic range. VENICE was designed through close collaboration with the creative community, fulfilling the requirements from filmmakers and production professionals.

VENICE will be officially unveiled on Sept. 6, in front of a select audience of American Society of Cinematographers (ASC) members and a range of other industry professionals. Sony will also screen a short film, “The Dig”, the first footage shot with VENICE, produced in Anamorphic, written and directed by Joseph Kosinski and shot by Academy Award winning Cinematographer Claudio Miranda, ASC.

“We really went back to the drawing board for this one,” said Peter Crithary, marketing manager, Sony Electronics. “It is our next-generation camera system, a ground-up development initiative encompassing a completely new image sensor. We carefully considered key aspects such as form factor, ergonomics, build quality, ease of use, a refined picture and painterly look—with a simple, established workflow. Full frame sensor and wide range of lens compatibility

VENICE combines a newly developed 36x24mm Full Frame sensor to meet the high-quality demands of feature filmmaking. Full Frame offers the advantages of compatibility with a wide range of lenses, including Anamorphic, Super 35mm, Spherical and Full Frame PL mount lenses for a greater range of expressive freedom with shallow depth of field. The lens mount can also be changed to support E-mount lenses for shooting situations that require smaller, lighter, and wider lenses. User-selectable areas of the image sensor allow shooting in Super 35 mm 4 – perf. Future firmware upgrades are planned to allow the camera to handle 36mm wide 6K resolution. Fast image scan technology minimizes “Jello” effects.

New color management system and established workflow for flexible post-production

A new color management system with an ultra wide color gamut gives users more control and greater flexibility to work with images during grading and post-production. VENICE also has more than 15 stops of latitude to handle challenging lighting situations from low-light to harsh sunlight with a gentle roll-off handling of highlights.

VENICE achieves high quality and efficient file-based production through Sony’s established 16-bit RAW/X-OCN via the AXS-R7 recorder, and 10 bit XAVC workflows. VENICE is also compatible with current and upcoming hardware accessories for CineAlta cameras (DVF-EL200 Full HD OLED Viewfinder, AXS-R7 recorder, AXS-CR1 and high-speed Thunderbolt-enabled AXS-AR1 card reader, using established AXS and SxS memory card formats.

Intuitive design & refined functionality support simple and efficient on-location operation

VENICE has a fully modular and intuitive design with refined functionality to support simple and efficient on-location operation. It is the film industry’s first camera with a built-in 8-stage glass ND filter system, making the shooting process efficient and streamlining camera setup. The camera is designed for easy operation with an intuitive control panel placed on the Assistant and Operator sides of the camera. A 24 V power supply input/output and LEMO connector allow use of many standard camera accessories, designed for use in harsh environments.

License options for individual production requirements

With VENICE, Sony is giving users the option to customize their camera by enabling the features needed, matched to their individual production requirements. Optional licenses will be available in permanent, monthly and weekly durations to expand the camera’s capabilities with new features including 4K anamorphic and Full Frame, each sold separately.

Zenit is back in business, plans to release full-frame mirrorless camera in 2018

Russian publication RNS has revealed that camera maker Zenit has restarted camera production, and may in fact launch a full-frame mirrorless model on the international market as early as 2018. The initial announcement was reportedly made by Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant’s Deputy Director General for Civilian Production and Consumer Goods, Igor Sergeyev, who revealed the plans via Moscow Region Radio 1.

The planned full-frame mirrorless camera will retain iconic, brand-recognizable elements, according to the announcement, including “characteristic contours, ergonomics, [and] camera lines.” However, the camera will be modernized for today’s market, featuring both light and dark color options as well as leather trim.

The price will exceed that of a “good smartphone,” according to Sergeyev, though specifics weren’t provided.

Zenit, though once popular, ceased production in 2005 following multiple failed attempts to revive its place in the market. According to Sergeyev, the latest production round will not attempt to compete with big-name camera manufacturers like Canon or Nikon. In fact, an unnamed “leading photographic equipment company” will produce some of the components for this camera.

Additional details on the camera or Zenit’s renaissance weren’t provided, but we’ll let you know just as soon as more is revealed.
