Incredible photos of Earth from the European Space Agency

11 Oct

Golden_curves_large.jpg

There’s no better view of the earth than the one you get from space. The European Space Agency’s mission is to ‘find out more about Earth, its immediate space environment, our Solar System and the Universe’, and as such, every year it produces thousands of high-resolution images of earth from orbit. Click through for a selection of stunning photographs and links to the ESA’s website (which, unlike NASA’s US government-funded site, is still online).

Banksy Tags Manhattan: Fresh New Graffiti Live from NYC

08 Oct

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Street Art & Graffiti. ]

banksy manhattan no graffiti

Making his way through the boroughs of New York, the infamous but mysterious interventionist Banksy is broadcasting new stencils, installations and mixed media work all month as a street-artist-in-residence in America’s largest city.

banksy new york accent

In Midtown Manhattan, his figures, phrases, plays on words and signage can be found defacing (or at least: refacing) concrete walls and garage doors in Banksy’s typical self-referential style. From there, he has moved onto Williamsburg and otherBrooklyn neighborhoods, and no one knows quite where he will pop up next.

banksy the musical

As he often does in new destinations, Banksy is actively toying with New York City culture and tropes, from its stylized graffiti fonts to its world-famous Broadway shows (his contribution to existing tags above: “The Musical” stenciled alongside each).

banksy mobile truck art

Branching out from two-dimensional pieces, here is “a New York delivery truck converted into a mobile garden (includes rainbow, waterfall and butterflies).” This piece in particular is also actually moving around the city: “The truck will visit a different location every evening from dusk,” starting in an East Village location.

banksy dog fire hydrant

banksy big truck mural

Perhaps best of all, this time Banksy also provides wonderful faux-vintage commentary on this series (titled: Better In Than Out) in the form of audio tour files you can click to play on Banksy’s website – or by calling a special toll-free number found spray-painted next to a number of these pieces: 1-800-656-4271. Of course, as always and almost as quickly as they appear, many of his works are being erased or defaced by city workers or other street artists – it goes with the territory.

The Secrets of Great Portrait Photography – Great Video from Brian Smith

07 Oct

Late last year I was giving a copy of celebrity portrait photographer Brian Smith’s book – Secrets of Great Portrait Photography: Photographs of the Famous and Infamous. It was a great read and one that gave me load of ideas for my own portraiture.

Today I was surfing on YouTube and came across a great lecture that Brian Smith gave at B&H Photo that really is a great walk through of the book and many of the tips in it. While long – the video is really useful on many levels.

The video goes for almost an hour and a half so grab yourself a beverage and snack and make yourself comfortable – it really is a great watch!

Get Brian Smith’s Book – The Secrets of Great Portrait Photography

Grab Brian’s book here and check out more of Brian Smith’s work on his website.

Images from the past: Circular snapshots from the Kodak 1

06 Oct

kodak-1-national-media-museum2.jpg

The first consumer point-and-shoots didn’t have art effect modes or face detection smile-shutters. They looked like the Kodak 1, a leather-encased box with a key to wind the film, a shutter release and not much else. Introduced to the public in 1888, each Kodak 1 contained a roll of film with 100 exposures. The National Media Museum owns a collection of prints from these first consumer ‘compacts.’ Click through to take a look at a set of these early snapshots.

Team Notes From Our New Design

04 Oct

Quite a few months ago we started the process of redesigning Digital Photography School. For some time we’ve wanted to freshen up of the site as it’s been a couple of years since we last did (and the web has changed a lot since then!).

Our first port of call was to get your feedback on what you’d like to see – your feedback was great and we’ve put a lot of it into place (with more still to come).

If you’re reading this post and everything has gone to plan you’re hopefully seeing the the result!

We are still putting a few finishing touches on this design but while we do – we wanted to stop and share with you some of the important updates.

The big three …

Mobile Mobile Mobile!

mobile

You’ll notice the new design is what’s called responsive. This means it reformats itself depending on they size of the screen viewing the page.  The super wide screens we could optimise a little better for, but we’ll get to that.

Bigger text, better readability.

text

If you look through the articles on the site you’ll notice a significantly bigger font. Some have said perfect, others have said a little too big. We’d love to know your thoughts in comments below.

Improved commenting system.

comments

We’ve moved to Disqus for commenting allowing you to more easily upload your photo’s, keep track of your comments and create threads in all the articles.  All your original comments have been kept the way they were so it’s the best of both worlds.

Some other things we’ve Done

Nicer Archive Pages.

archive

We’ve created what we feel are more usable archives and search results pages. Hopefully making it easier to find the articles you’re looking for. See what they look like in our Photography Tips, Post Production and Cameras and Gear archives.

Some new Color

color

We’ve added a bit more color to the site.  We hope you like it!

A flashy new Home for our eBooks.

Our new bookstore page is designed to help you find the right eBooks with much less fuss.

books

Built for Speed

Millions of people visit dPS every month and whilst an never ending vigil you should find this new design a little more zippier than the last.  Where possible we’ve kept everything as efficient as we can.

Different but similar.

We’ve tried not to change the menus of the site to much.  There are still three main categories (tips, post and gear) and the submenus are the same.

A totally new front page.

front

You’ll notice the front page is very different.  We’ve tried to create the best window into the site as we can. This was perhaps the most controversial page so we’d love to know what you think.

New ways to share articles.

share

We’ve added a bunch of new ways to share articles with links at the top and the side. The next part is up to you!

 The Forums are up Next

Forum_Home

The development team are hard are work getting the forum ready for an update as well.  Just like the blog this will be mobile friendly, cleaner, easier to use and a lot more colourful!

… and a Little Glimpse into the Future

A few of you made the suggestion that you’d like to be able to bookmark some of the articles and really customise your dPS experience.  Once this new design over we’re excited to start working on exactly that.  I won’t give to much away but it’s something to be excited about!

How you can Help?

There’s over 4,000 articles on dPS and  I’m sure we’ve missed something – in fact our team are currently working through the full site still making tweaks as we find them.

You can help with this – if you do spot a bug, or some formatting that just doesn’t look right please let us know via the form below and we’ll get them fixed ASAP.

We can’t wait to hear your thoughts and as always thanks for being part of the dPS community.

Bug Submission

  • var RecaptchaOptions = {theme : ‘red’}; if(parseInt(‘4’) > 0) {RecaptchaOptions.tabindex = 4;}

jQuery(document).ready(function(){jQuery(document).trigger(‘gform_post_render’, [5, 1]) } );

30 September, 2013 – Photographing From The Heart

01 Oct

We are happy to publish an article by Steve Gosling today on Photographing From The Heart.  Steve is a good friend and I have had the opportunity to work with Steve at several workshops.  His approach to seeing and capturing the image is truly from the heart.  If you get the chance to shoot with Steve you’ll enjoy a new way of seeing and you’ll smile a lot as he is truly one of those unique and unforgettable individuals.  We hope you enjoy his article.

"Having been to Antarctica with Michael and Kevin, I would say after having traveled the world and shot nearly my entire life as an exhibiting photographer,  it was one of my highlights in my life and I talk about it, all the time.  The images and experience of seeing something visionary and nearly extinct from the world, to see and experience the wildlife and scenery that does not fear humans is amazing.  The images I shot there won me two Smithsonian awards and nearly 18 other international awards". – Tim Wolcott

Chromatic Vortex: 3D Art from 4,416 Sheets of Photo Paper

23 Sep

[ By WebUrbanist in Art & Installation & Sound. ]

chromatic storefront installation art

A site-specific installation in a New York City storefront, this twisting multi-colored tunnel was suspended in mid-air and held together with no less than 17,000 standard office bind clips.

Composed of over 4,000 panels of high-gloss photographic paper, CHROMAtex from SOFTlab (photos by Alan Tansey) was designed to suck passers by right in (proverbially not literally, fortunately for pedestrians).

chromatic art intersection interior

Situated in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, this sculptural work was built from the outside in. As illustrated in the video above, it slowly took shape as it moved from the front of the empty shop toward the back, breaking out into various subsidiary tunnels along the way.

These twists in turn split and curve, morphing from circular tubes into square ports and providing other internal perspectives for those curious enough to enter the interior space in order to see more of the suspended sculpture.

SOFTlab itself is composed of “artists, believers, listeners, directors, geeks, architects, sketchers, dreamers, programmers” and above all: designers. It was created by Michael Szivos who has a degree from the “Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation at Columbia University. The studio has since been involved in the design and production of projects across almost every medium, from digitally fabricated large-scale sculpture, to interactive design, to immersive digital video installations. As the studio adjusted to a wide range of projects, we began to focus less on the medium and style and more on ideas [and] we are able to approach every project from a fresh perspective to create rich spatial, graphic, interactive and visual experiences.”
