Your Favorite Place To Photograph

03 Apr

As photographers we all have our favorite locations to take photographs.  Mine happens to be in Philly, PA at an old prison (Eastern State Penitentiary) which has been converted to a museum.  I have been there many times and always look forward to going back for more.

So I want to ask you… what is your favorite place to photograph?  Comment below to share.

Gregory Heisler Will Now BTS For You My Most Favorite Photo He Has Ever Shot

13 Jan

To understand the impact this photo had on me when it first came out, you kinda have to get into the head of a Baltimore Sun photographer during the run-up to the 2004 Summer Olympics.

For one thing, this is the only photo which has ever made me shout the F-word in a supermarket checkout line. So yeah, I have been waiting a long time for this BTS.

Oh, and if that weren't enough, there are two more Gregory Heisler vids inside, too… Read more »

Metropolitan Cityscapes: Maps Honor Favorite Places

30 Nov

[ By Steph in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Each city is as different, and as beautiful, as we are. That’s the sentiment behind ‘Metropolitan Cityscapes‘, beautifully complex city maps with the negative space around the streets meticulously cut out, leaving delicate patterns behind.

Perhaps your tie to your favorite city is family history, or perhaps you walked down one of those unfamiliar streets as a visitor and have never forgotten the way it felt to take part in something entirely new. Designers Chauntelle Trinh and Eckard Buscher didn’t just arbitrarily choose the cities for their series of papercut maps, they explored them and set out to capture their essence.

Rather than simply modifying a city map and cutting it out, the designers undertook what they call ‘expeditions’ to gain an intimate understanding of metropolitan cities like Hong Kong, New York and San Francisco. Walking the streets to get a sense of the terrain, discovering the features that stood out to them, colored the way they designed each map.

“The centre of a city, its beating heart, is a palimpsest overflowing with imagery. Layers upon layers of stories have accumulated and disappeared through time. Behind each facade, each brick, each pathway, untold stories, memories and dreams are waiting to be narrated. Above all the noise, if you listen carefully, you can hear your own tale of the city.”

“To tell our stories of the city, we peeled away all the complex urban layers so that only the bare bones of place remains. Each line drawn and cut on every cityscape has a distinct story. Metropolitan Cityscapes are a new vision of the city as organism.”

My Favorite Gear: Weekly Photography Challenge

03 Nov

Kodak Brownie Starlet, 1957 - my first cameraThis week your photographic challenge is a little different to normal – we’d like you to photograph your favourite piece of photographic gear and to share a few words on why you like it.

In some ways it is a little less of a ‘photographic technique’ challenge and more an opportunity to see the gear that the dPS community loves the most (and photographing products is a good challenge too).

Feel free to share a photo of your camera, a lens, a lighting accessory, a camera bag or any other photographic gear or accessory that you can’t envisage your photography without. It could be new or old gear, you can shoot it in any situation (including with you in the shot as a self portrait) – it is totally up to you!

Once you’ve taken and selected the ‘favourite gear’ image that you’d like to share – upload it to your favourite photo sharing site or blog and either share a link to it or – embed them in the comments using our embed tool to do so.

If you tag your photos on Flickr, Instagram, Twitter or other sites with Tagging tag them as #DPSGEARILOVE to help others find them. Linking back to this page might also help others know what you’re doing so that they can share in the fun.

Also – don’t forget to check out some of the great shots posted in last weeks challenge – Incomplete challenge where there were some great shots submitted.

Sutro Baths Photowalk Favorite and More

18 Jun

I had a great time at this years Sutro Baths photo walk. There were numerous photos worthy of note, but this one particular photo by Greg Lato caught my eye. I particularly liked the mood of the image. The long exposure, darker tones in the sky and leading lines of the ruins make for an excellent photo. Congrats Greg and thanks for taking part.

To see some of the other great photos taken check out the Sutro Baths Photo Walk Flickr group. I had a tough time choosing this year. All around some solid work and it would seem everyone had a fun time exploring.
