The new JPEG XS image format was built for streaming 4K and VR content

There’s a new video compression standard on the block. It’s called JPEG XS, and while it’s made by the same team behind the ubiquitous JPEG image format, it serves a much different purpose.

JPEG XS was announced earlier this week by the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG), headed by École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne (EPFL) professor Touradj Ebrahimi. The mission of this new format isn’t to replace the standard JPEG image standard, but to supplement it by being a low-energy standard for streaming video content via Wi-Fi and 5G cellular networks.

According to JPEG, the mission of JPEG XS is to, “stream the files instead of storing them in smartphones or other devices with limited memory.” JPEG specifically mentions the benefits of JPEG XS for video captured and streamed by “drones and self-driving cars—technologies where long latency represents a danger for humans.”

What’s interesting is that JPEG isn’t trying to shrink the file size with JPEG XS. In fact, quite the opposite. Whereas the JPEG standard has a compression ratio of about 10:1, JPEG XS comes out to a 6:1 ratio.

“For the first time in the history of image coding, we are compressing less in order to better preserve quality, and we are making the process faster while using less energy,” said Professor Ebrahimi in the EPFL announcement post. “We want to be smarter in how we do things. The idea is to use less resources and use them more wisely. This is a real paradigm shift.”

JPEG XS is open source, as well as HDR-compatible, making it a prime candidate for content creators around the world. Already, the European Space Agency (ESA) has expressed interest in the standard. JPEG XS would serve as a perfect format for sending high-quality images and video from space probes down to Earth while not using up any unnecessary energy.

According to Ebrahimi, JPEG XS will first be put to use in “professional applications like movie editing, space imagery and professional-grade cameras.” Consumer electronics will like VR, AR, wireless connections between media devices, and self-driving cars will follow. The only remaining hurdle in the path of JPEG XS is the final approval from the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). Once it gets approved, it should be rolling into products and services shortly.

Intel unveils Core i9 laptop CPU, promises ‘ultimate’ content creation experience

Intel just revealed its 8th Generation laptop CPUs, and sitting at the top of the heap is a behemoth. Behold the Core i9-8950HK, a chip the company is calling “the highest-performance laptop processor Intel has ever built.” Equipped with 6 cores/12 threads, this unlocked chip boasts single-core Turbo Boost speeds of up to 4.8 GHz and promises “the ultimate content creation experience.”

Of course, that’s just marketing speak, which is why Intel came to this press release armed with some benchmarks. According to the company, the 8th Generation Core i9-8950HK can edit 4K video up to 59 percent faster than a machine sporting the 7th Generation Core i7 with same discrete graphics (in Adobe Premiere Pro).

It’s also 29 percent faster in general performance, and 41 percent faster for gaming.

Of course, you don’t have to go all the way up to the Core i9 to get great photo and video editing performance out of your laptop. All of the 8th Gen Intel Core mobile processors revealed today pack some punch, with 6 cores and 12 threads available in both the 2.6GHz Core i7-8750H and 2.2GHz Core i7-8850H. According to Dell, these deliver 68 percent faster photo editing compared to a 3-year-old system.

This 8th Gen Core i9 CPU has already made an appearance in the Dell and MSI laptops revealed this week, and more high-performance and gaming laptops will surely follow suit. Instagram test lets users re-share content, but there’s a way to disable it

Instagram has confirmed that it is testing a feature for sharing publicly available content posted by other users. In a statement to TechCrunch, Instagram explained that the company regularly tests new ways for users to “share any moment” with their friends. The feature, which some people are referring to as “regram,” allows for public content to be shared within a user’s Instagram Story.

The sharing feature is only available to a small percentage of users at this time. Instagram didn’t provide any sort of time frame for when the feature may launch for all users, nor whether that is certain to happen. However, it seems likely that the feature will see a wider launch due to all users already having the ability to disable re-shares.

Photographers can prevent users from re-sharing their content by opening their Instagram profile, then tapping the menu icon. Within the app’s menu, a new setting option is listed that reads “Allow Others to Reshare” alongside a toggle switch. Toggling the switch off will disable other users’ ability to re-share content posted by that account.

Adobe’s Project ‘Deep Fill’ is an incredible, AI-powered Content Aware Fill

The coolest technology to come out of Adobe MAX is, sadly, not the technology we already have access to. Like Adobe’s Project Cloak we showed you earlier today, it’s the incredible ‘Sneaks’ sneak peeks that really wow the audience. Case in point: check out Project Deep Fill, a much more powerful, AI-driven version of Content Aware Fill that makes the current tool look like crap… to put it lightly.

Deep Fill is powered by the Adobe Sensei technology—which “uses artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning and deep learning”—and trained using millions of real-world images. So while Content Aware Fill has to work with the pixels at hand to ‘guess’ what’s behind the object or person you’re trying to remove, Deep Fill can use its training images to much more accurately create filler de novo.

The examples used in the demo video above are impressive to say the least:

And just when you thought the demo is over, you find out that Deep Fill can also take into account user inputs—like sketching—to completely alter an image:

In this way it’s a lot more than a ‘fill’ feature. In fact, Adobe calls it “a new deep neural network-based image in-painting system.” Check out the full demo for yourself above, and then read all about the other ‘Sneaks’ presented at Adobe MAX here.

Demo: Adobe’s experimental ‘Cloak’ tech is like Content Aware Fill for video

Yesterday at Adobe MAX, the lucky attendees got to see a few of Adobe’s signature “Sneaks”: sneak peeks at crazy features that are in development. And chief among them this year was something code-named Adobe Cloak.

In essence, Adobe Cloak is the video-editing counterpart to Photoshop’s Content Aware Fill. Simply outline the portion of your video that you would like removed—be it a stationary object or a couple walking through your scene—and Adobe Cloak will intelligently erase them from the shot. This is, of course, something VFX artists have been doing for ages, but automating the process to this degree is impressive to say the least.

Adobe sent us a few demo videos of the feature in action, which you can check out above. And if you want more details about how Adobe Cloak works/was developed, Engadget got to sit down with Adobe research engineer Geoffrey Oxholm and VFX product manager Victoria Nece to talk about the technology, which is still “in the experimental stages.”

The bad news is, there’s no current plans to implement it. The good news? They wouldn’t be working on it if they didn’t plan to implement it some time, right!?

10 Reasons Why it’s a Good Idea to Start Producing Video Content

If you spend any amount of time online you’ll be well aware of the rapid expansion of access to video content that has happened over recent years. Being largely user driven, this content varies from professionally produced through to home videos of cats, puppies and everything in between.

With the increase in internet speeds and processing power of viewing devices, we have the ability to watch countless hours of video content where and when we like. This provides some interesting opportunities for you as a photographer to consider, either through creating video content, or using video as a platform to show your work in a different way.

Ultimately it allows you to connect with people differently, using elements of storytelling and emotional connection that can only exist through the use of motion and sound. Here are some reasons why I have embraced video as a way of communicating.

Reasons to produce Video 01

1. Video allows you to tell stories in a more immersive way

Anyone who has been to see a film or documentary and become heavily invested in the story and its characters will be able to relate to this. While still images can communicate much of a subject, the depth of which you can tell stories through motion is effective in a different way.

Hearing the person’s voice rather than reading a quote, listening to them describe a situation or speak to another person and feeling the emotion in what they are saying and how they are presenting it. There is the element of moving images that cannot be replicated through stills. It is not to say that motion is a better way, just a different way to tell stories.

It also allows the viewer to have a different experience in seeing environments through motion. Seeing the elements that exist move and interact is again difficult to replicate through stills. Wildlife photos versus wildlife footage is an excellent example of how your understanding of an environment can shift based on the way you are viewing it.

2. Music can introduce a different kind of emotional pull

Music plays a significant role in every piece of film or TV content, from the news to drama to documentary. It has incredibly strong pulling power with our emotions and this is something anyone can take advantage of. The immediate tone that is set with music helps to identify what we can expect to feel, the anticipation of a lion hunting its prey, the feeling of accomplishment for a climber reaching a summit, or a family coming together after a long time apart. The ability to pull your audience further into a story with the emotive power of music is something we should look at seriously if producing video content.

While we may not have the budget for commercial music or large-scale productions, there are a lot of options available through stock music sites that will give you the style of music you are after. By using music that is available for licensing, you are free to have your video projects available for public viewing with no concern of copyright infringement as long as the music is licensed for the correct use.

3. Creating slide shows of your images adds a more dynamic element to your portfolio

This is a great way to bring a collection of images together and show them in a more dynamic way. The collection of images may simply be your portfolio, or it could be from a wedding you have shot, an overseas trip, or a family event. There are many benefits to presenting still images in this way as it allows you to include music and some animation or movement of your images within the frame as opposed to just a static position.

It also means your photographic portfolio can now be viewed on platforms that would otherwise be unavailable for still images, such as YouTube.

4. You can bring together a collection of images and video that are connected

Producing video content doesn’t have to include exclusively just video. Incorporating stills and animation can help tell stories in a more complete way, as well as utilizing content that may already exist.

An example of this may be a short story telling project about a person’s life growing up. Using old photos as part of the visual elements means you are able to give greater context to that person’s life, their story, and what they were like at this time. It also brings a greater level of authenticity to the person’s story as the viewer is able to see a visual representation of what they are talking about.

Another example of this is you may be telling the story of an artist. Using images of their art as they describe their motivation, process, and aims allows to help show their work as they are discussing it. Again, giving better context to who they are as well as a visual representation of their work within the video piece.

5. You can develop character-driven stories and documentaries

Many documentaries have a narrator or voice-over directing the flow and narrative of the story. Character driven stories only allow the voice and vision of the person the story is about, to appear.

While often there is an interviewer involved, the voice of the person asking the questions is removed from the final edit leaving only the people appearing in the video as the ones directing the story.

This has some considerations when asking questions during an interview, and more specifically, the way in which the person being interviewed responds.

6. Most social media channels favor video content

A quick look across the most popular social media platforms will show how much video content is being favored. In fact, doing a few tests will show you that the current algorithms being used by these platforms favor video content above almost all others.

While YouTube is still the king of video, other platforms such as Facebook and Instagram are definitely showing great reach and interaction with its users and video content. This can be a big advantage for those producing video as you have the potential to reach a bigger audience based on this shift.

7. You can offer more options to existing clients including time-lapse videos

It used to be the case that if a client wanted photographic work done, they hired a photographer and if they wanted video content produced, they hired a video producer or production company. But, there has been a shift in recent years with clients having the option of choosing one person who is capable of producing both. This has a number of benefits for the client as well as the supplier.

For the client, they only have to deal with one person or company. This is especially important if the styled approach needs to match across different content (photo still and video, for example. For the producer of content, it means you are able to offer more solutions for your clients, giving them a turnkey solution for production and more reasons to use you instead of anyone else.

8. You can produce video for stock licensing

There has never been a greater demand for video content. That demand is only set to rise as video content is embraced across all sectors of our society and more online platforms.

Here lies the opportunity for content creators. While there is nothing better than custom footage made specifically for a story, film, or documentary project, there is not always the budget or easy access to what is needed. Stock content is an excellent way for producers to obtain content for their respective projects. This is not a new concept as stock content has been around for a long time.

By looking through the libraries of some of the larger stock libraries, you can quickly determine the style of content that is accepted by stock libraries, and what is the most popular for purchase and download. There are many options for your approach to creating stock video content. However, maximizing your existing connection or access to local areas or industries means you can take a more strategic approach to what you produce based on your knowledge of said industries or areas.

9. You can start doing a regular vlog (video log) to showcase your work

This is almost like a behind the scenes process of telling your story. It is a great way for your audience to get a better idea of who you are as an artist and producer. It will allow your followers to become better invested in your work and your story so they become better connected to you.

By understanding your process in a transparent way, your followers can not only understand the amount of effort and resources that go in to producing your work, they will also develop a better understanding of what it takes to be a successful artist.

10. Producing video is a good skill to have

Even if you are not using video production within your business or work, it is a good skill to develop for the future. As mentioned earlier, there is no doubt we are consuming more video content than ever before.

Organizations that traditionally would not consider producing video content in-house are starting to do so. Developing the skill and understanding for what is needed to produce this content will give you a better understanding of the strategy needed, whether you are producing it personally, or engaging the services of an external producer.

This will often lead to better planning and execution of a project, which results in better quality outcomes.

If producing video content is of interest then get out there and start experimenting with this medium. As most, if not all cameras for photography also shoot video now, it means there is little or no investment in equipment to get started. Filmborn for iOS offers 9 film presets and educational content

Mastin Labs, which is probably best known for its Lightroom and Photoshop presets, has applied its film emulation know-how to the mobile sector and launched the Filmborn app for iOS. The app is advertised as a full-blown replacement for Apple’s stock camera app, with features such as gesture-based white balance and exposure, advanced editing mode, batch processing and image library functions.

However, the app’s real selling point are the 9 film emulations users can choose from, including Ilford Pan F, Fuji 400H or Fuji 800Z. Each ‘digital emulsion’ is customizable, allowing you to adjust it to your personal style. The app also provides some educational content that explains what capture situation or what skin tones a simulation mode is best suited for. There is also a ‘Camera Manual’ where Filmborn users can learn more about analog film processing and how it translates into the controls and features offered by the app. So, Filmborn is also an interesting tool for those who like the idea of developing film but prefer to ‘practice’ digitally first.

Picturelife shutters service, user content migrates to SmugMug

Photo storage and management service Picturelife has shut down after a few years of operation, citing ‘a challenging economic environment’ as the cause. All of Picturelife’s products have already been shuttered, however users’ photos and videos have not been lost. ‘A few weeks ago,’ the company explains, ‘we reached an agreement with SmugMug to provide you with a way to recover your photo and video memories.’

Picturelife’s now-former users can access their photos and videos for free through SmugMug’s service without obligation here; the Picturelife account login information is required. The content is made available for free under SmugMug’s two-week trial, after which point the service is available at various prices. Picturelife users are being offered a discounted $ 2/month subscription option for their first year of SmugMug service.

Speaking about the migration, SmugMug’s CEO Don MacAskill said, ‘For us, this is not about customer acquisition, it’s about doing the right thing and helping the photography community keep their photos safe. We weren’t interested in acquiring Picturelife’s business, but wanted to help our fellow photographers, and so we offered our services to help make that happen.’

Ricoh partners with 360° content social platform Spinnable

Ricoh has partnered with Spinnable, a social sharing platform dedicated to 360-degree content. The partnership allows Ricoh Theta S owners to directly upload 360-degree videos recorded with the camera to Spinnable. The Spinnable platform is currently available as an iOS app, and will soon be launched for Android, Samsung Gear, and desktop, as well.

The Ricoh Theta S is a consumer handheld camera that records 360-degree high-definition video via a 14MP image sensor, wide-angle lenses, and Ricoh’s own ultra-small twin-lens folded-optical system. Currently, Theta users can only upload their creations to YouTube, Google Street View and Ricoh’s website. Spinnable opens up another option to Theta users, who will be able to view and pan around within the video using either their phone’s integrated gyroscope or by swiping a finger.

In a press statement on Wednesday, Spinnable co-founder and CEO Mark Demarest said, ‘Although Spinnable is hardware agnostic, we’ve chosen the Ricoh Theta S as the first camera to directly integrate with Spinnable because of its compact form factor, image quality and price point.’ Spinnable users can now purchase the Ricoh Theta S directly through the app, as well.

With these relationships, Spinnable will be creating content that can be accessed exclusively through the app. The company will also be launching live-streaming events in 360 degrees directly through the app.
