PSA: Download your photos from Canon’s Irista platform by the end of the day before they disappear forever

Back in October, Canon announced it was shutting down its cloud-based photo platform, Irista. Today is the final day the platform will be live, so if you have any photographs still on the platform that you would like to download, you will need to do so by the end of the day, as the platform will no longer be accessible after today.

As noted in our original coverage, all of your photos can be downloaded as a ZIP folder using the ‘Download Your Photos’ link on the Irista homepage. It’s worth reiterating too that none of the tags, photo ratings, titles or albums you have assigned to the images will be downloaded alongside the images.

Canon’s annual results show a rough 2019, but tease ‘advanced’ mirrorless camera, lenses for 2020

Canon has published its 2019 fiscal year financial results and presentation. In the documents, Canon highlights how the company has done, shedding light on what we can expect in the coming year, both fiscally and on the development front.

On the financial front, Canon’s Imaging System division recorded net sales of 807.4B yen and a net operating profit of 48.2B yen a decrease of 16.8 percent and 62 percent, respectively, year-over-year. Canon anticipated a dramatic drop-off in both net sales and operating profit, due to ‘market contraction and the intensely competitive environment,’ but the final results are still slightly worse than expected at 14.6B yen and 2.6B yen lower than Canon’s projections as of last quarter.

Echoing CIPA data, Canon notes the interchangeable-lens camera market shrank 15 percent, with entry-level models being the most impacted due to the increasing capabilities and popularity of smartphones. Canon also recognized its own shortcomings, with a note in the presentation saying:

‘Although we have launched two full-frame mirrorless cameras as well as ten dedicated lenses, our lineup is still insufficient.’

Looking forward, Canon remains realistic, saying it ‘expect[s] camera revenue to decline due to the impact of continuing market contraction,’ but feels confident it will ‘put a stop to the decline in profitability, by further enhancing our mirrorless lineup with an advanced feature full-frame model and lenses, and by accelerating review of our business structure.’

Specifically, Canon makes it very clear that it’s working on more advanced mirrorless cameras, saying:

‘In order to recover from our late entry into the mirrorless camera market, we have plans to launch a model that incorporates a newly developed image sensor and image-processing engine that offer even more advanced features. We will work to raise our presence in the mirrorless camera category, leveraging large trade exhibitions around the world. Even amid increasing competition, we will expand sales of higher-end models driven by new products and aim for top market share even in the mirrorless camera market.’

Canon is projecting its net sales and operating profit for the 2020 fiscal year will be 787B yen and 53.7B yen, respectively, which would equate to a 2.5 percent decrease in net sales and an 11.5 percent increase in operating profit, year-over-year. In addition to offering more ‘advance feature full-frame’ mirrorless cameras and RF lenses, Canon’s projected increase in profitability will also likely be helped with fabrication costs now that it appears to have its mirrorless manufacturing facilities up and running.

Canon’s sentiments expressed in the presentation further lend credibility to the ongoing rumors about its forthcoming mirrorless cameras, but certainly fall short of telling the whole story, which we will only find out with time.

Rumor: Canon’s next mirrorless camera could have 45MP sensor with IBIS and possible 8K/30p video

Yesterday, Canon Rumors posted an interesting list of rumored specifications for a Canon mirrorless camera it believes will be called the EOS R5. Today, additional details have emerged, painting a picture of what would be an impressive mirrorless camera if the rumored specifications hold true.

According to Canon Rumors’ report, which was created with information shared via multiple, unrelated anonymous sources, the camera could feature a 45-megapixel sensor with in-body image stabilization and still frame rates up to 20 frames per second. Specifically, Canon Rumors claims the IBIS will offer five stops of image stabilization on its own and up to 7–8 stops when used with in-lens stabilization as well. The still frame rates are still up in the air, as the sources are apparently offering conflicting information, but it appears as though it could be 14 fps and 20 fps for mechanical and electronic shutter, respectively.

According to Canon Rumors, the camera will offer 4K video at 120 fps and could offer 8K Raw at up to 30 fps, although it is noted that the 4K / 120 fps could be a crop mode to control heat and the 8K Raw could refer to a special timelapse mode in the camera.

Those specs are enticing, but it’s the rumored video features that are really interesting. According to Canon Rumors, the camera could offer 4K video at 120 fps and could offer 8K Raw at up to 30 fps, although it is noted that the 4K / 120 fps could be a crop mode to control heat and the 8K Raw could refer to a special timelapse mode in the camera.

Other details rumored include the addition of a scroll wheel, the removal of the touchbar, a larger-capacity battery that looks similar to the LP-E6/N batteries currently used by Canon, and an announcement date ‘ahead of CP+ next month.’

Canon users have long been asking for an R-series camera body worthy of Canon’s growing lineup of RF-mount lenses and if these rumors indeed come to fruition, it’s safe to say there won’t be much room left to complain. However, these specifications are just that: a rumor, so there’s also the possibility these are little more than hearsay or misleading fragments cobbled together from multiple other rumors.

In light of these rumored specifications, let us take a second to ask you, the reader, how you would like to see Canon evolve its R-series lineup going forward?

Canon’s RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM will get a firmware update to fix the focusing issue next month

Next month, Canon will release a firmware update that fixes an autofocus problem reported by RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM telephoto lens owners. The company says it’s confirmed this lens may produce a ‘slightly front-focused’ image when the photo is captured at close range with the focus distance set to around the 200mm end of the scale.

Canon will release the firmware with a bug fix for this problem in January 2020, the company revealed on its US website. The new firmware will be intended for RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM lenses running firmware version 1.0.5 or earlier, something that can be checked within the camera’s menu.

The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM telephoto lens is available from B&H Photo and other retailers for $ 2,699.

Video: How Defocus Smoothing works inside Canon’s new 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens

To coincide with the official release of its now-official RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens, Canon has released a 90-second video showing how the Defocus Smoothing (DS) technology inside its upcoming lens actually works.

For those not familiar, Canon’s DS technology is similar to the apodization technology found in Sony’s FE 100mm F2.8 STF GM OSS and Fujifilm’s APD version of the XF 56mm F1.2 R. In the case of Canon’s new RF 85mm F1.2 DS IS, the DS technology consists of a new vapor-deposited coating applied to two elements inside the lens that ‘has the effect of gradually decreasing the transmission factor from the center to the periphery of the lens.’ In other words, two elements inside the lens effectively have a radial graduated neutral density coating that’s feathered around the outermost edge of the element.

As demonstrated in the above comparison from the video, the DS coating creates much smoother bokeh by softening the edges of out-of-focus highlights.

The Canon RF 85mm F1.2L USM DS lens will be available in December 2019 for $ 3000.

Canon’s 32MP chip marks the end of the 24MP APS-C era

The 32MP sensor in the EOS 90D not only tells us about Canon’s APS-C future but also puts pressure on other camera makers to move beyond the 24MP Sony Semiconductor chips that have underpinned so many models

If you’ve bought an APS-C camera in the past few years, there’s a reasonable chance it was built around one of the 24MP sensors from Sony Semiconductor. Since the first version arrived, back in the NEX-7 and a77, it’s been at the heart of a series of excellent cameras from Nikon, Pentax, Ricoh, Fujifilm and, of course, Sony itself.

But the arrival of two newer, higher pixel-count sensors, both of which outperform those 24MP chips in meaningful ways, is likely to herald the end of the 24MP era.

The sensor in the NEX-7 expanded on the excellent low noise, high dynamic range performance of the 12 and 16MP CMOS ‘Exmor’ chips but, especially in its later, copper-wired version, helped usher-in the era of 4K video shooting. But time and technology move on, and the impressive results we saw from Canon’s new 32MP sensor move the battle to higher resolutions, which will push other camera makers to demand more from their own suppliers.

Closing the gap

Canon’s own 24MP sensors closed much of the DR gap that had existed between their cameras and the Sony Semi-based ones, but our DR testing of the 90D suggests the disparity is now even smaller. There’s still a visible difference, but it’s getting small enough that it’d only keep you awake at night if you shot two cameras side-by-side.

And offering more

Having all but caught up in this previous area of weakness, the 32MP Canon pulls ahead in other respects: paired with a sharp lens, the new sensor will resolve recognizably more detail than a 24MP camera can. Its high ISO noise performance looks good, too, when compared at a common output size. And that’s without even considering the lower risk of artifacts that Canon’s dual-pixel design offers, compared with other on-sensor PDAF implementations.

Even scrutinized at 1:1 level (which isn’t necessarily the most natural use of 32MP), the 90D’s sensor can produce impressive amounts of detail.

4K keeps rolling

We were rather less impressed with the Canon chip when it comes to video. Its full-width output is noticeably less detailed than most of its contemporaries. Some of this may be down to overly conservative sharpening and a desire to avoid aliasing, but the resolution capture appears to be lower even when compared with cameras natively sampling a 3840 x 2160 pixel region, let alone the results from a chip that oversamples.

But this chink in Canon’s armor doesn’t leave room for the 24MP chip to strike back. Because, even in its faster, copper-wired iteration, the Sony Semiconductor sensor is starting to show its age. Rolling shutter is visible (often to an unpleasant degree) on many of the cameras that try to pull 4K from these 24MP sensors. However, it’s not just the Canon chip that they have to now compete with.

The 26MP sensor in Fujifilm’s X-T3 not only delivers 4K 60p, for those who need it, but it also delivers detailed 4K 30p with impressively low rolling shutter rates.

For video, the best APS-C chip on the market is arguably the 26MP chip in Fujifilm’s X-T3 and X-T30 model. These are almost certainly Sony Semiconductor products, too, capable of much less jello-prone oversampled 4K and even 4K/60p if you can live with a bit of a crop.

In some parallel universe, it would be the 4K-capable 28MP chip from Samsung’s NX1 that we’d be recognizing here. Sadly its low sales and Samsung’s withdrawal from the market meant the 24MP era lasted rather longer

With the 24MP sensors looking outdated in terms of both stills and video performance, it’s likely we’ll see more cameras moving to these newer, higher resolution sensors. Despite what you may have heard, the ‘megapixel race’ is far from over. And new cameras will be all the better for it.

Canon’s new EOS R, RP firmware updates improve AF accuracy, performance and more

Today, Canon published the latest firmware updates for its EOS R and EOS RP camera systems. Firmware version 1.4.0 and firmware version 1.3.0 improve the autofocus capabilities fo the EOS R and EOS RP, respectively.

Below is the changelog for the firmware version 1.4.0 update for the Canon EOS R:

Firmware Version 1.3.0 incorporates the following enhancement:
1. Enhances eye detection Auto Focus (AF) for improved face and eye recognition at greater distances.
2. Improved Auto Focus (AF) performance helps the camera to focus on and track smaller subjects.
3. Reduces lag time between the actual Auto Focus (AF) and the AF frame display for images in the viewfinder or on the LCD.
4. Fixes a phenomenon in which the AF frame size cannot be changed in the Servo AF setting.
5. Fixes PTP communication vulnerability.

The changelog for the firmware version 1.3.0 update for the Canon EOS RP reads the same with the exception of bullet point number four which instead reads:

Fixes a phenomenon in which main dial icon may not appear when magnify/reduce button is pressed during the image playback.

The two updates are currently available to download from Canon USA (EOS R, EOS RP).

Canon’s entry-level EOS M200 offers eye detection and 4K video

Canon has introduced the EOS M200, an entry-level mirrorless camera. It’s a fairly modest upgrade to one of our favorite cameras, the EOS M100. Its new Digic 8 processor allows for Dual Pixel AF with eye detection, heavily cropped 4K/24p video and improved battery life.

Canon’s DPP Express app for iPad will soon require a monthly subscription plan

According to a new note on Canon Singapore’s website, Canon is making its Digital Photo Professional (DPP) Express iPad app subscription-based in the near future.

DPP Express is an iPad-only app that works hand-in-hand with the Canon Camera Connect app to process JPEG and ‘CR3’ Raw files from Canon cameras. The application is fairly standard in its feature set and functionality, with a rather standard interface designed to easily make adjustments and edits to images on the go.

Currently, Canon DPP Express has a rating of just 1.6 stars out of 5 in the iOS App Store—and that’s before the impending update. Starting with version 1.2.0, which is due out October 2019 according to the note, the app will require a monthly subscription at a cost that’s yet to be disclosed.

It will still be possible to transfer ‘CR3’ files from compatible cameras to mobile devices via the Canon Camera Connect app, but Canon considers DPP Express to be a major component in its ‘mobile Raw workflow,’ so adding a monthly subscription cost to the workflow likely won’t go over well for those who do use the app.

We have contacted Canon for more details on pricing and whether or not there will be an annual subscription option as well and will update this article accordingly when we hear back.
