Best Photos of 2012 by Jim M. Goldstein

02 Jan

2012 was full of great photo opportunities and between my DSLR and cell phone I must have taken close to 55-60,000 photos. This years personal projects were centered around time-lapses and iPhone photos of my son, but I was also selectively choosing my DSLR photo subjects. A sample of what caught my eye is quite evident in my Best Photos of 2012 final selections. As was the case in years past it is impossible to rank my best photos (best photos of 2011, best photos of 2010, best photos of 2009, best photos of 2008 and best photos of 2007). So in no particular order here are my 10 favorite photos taken in 2012. Enjoy and feel free to let me know if you have a favorite!

Before I forget if you haven’t submitted your best photos of 2012 for my Blog Project: Your Best Photos From 2012 be sure to do so. The deadline is January 5th midnight PST.

Milky Way Above Maui
This is a photo from my most recent time-lapse outing a top Haleakala in Maui. Other than the freezing temperatures and 25 mph wind gusts it was great experience.

The State of Homeland Security 2012
Since 9/11 I’m always intrigued to see how the presence of security, the military and police change across the country in particular in New York City. During my last trip to NYC I found this one photo quite telling. Timing is everything.

Family Annular Solar Eclipse Outing
I made a big effort to photograph the annular solar eclipse that was visible in northern California in 2012 and was quite successful, but the scene behind me turned out to be the real photo of the day. The family behind me had great “ooh ahh” faces with solar filters in front of their faces and it turned out to be a classic moment. It kind of reminds me of this classic 50′s atomic bomb viewer photo.

Bokeh City – New York City
I indulged this year by buying a rare Canon 50mm f/1.0 lens and started exploring the Canon 50mm f/1.0′s range of bokeh. One of my favorite shots from my time experimenting with the lens in NYC was of this busy intersection. Not every element is completely unrecognizable so it’s not completely abstract. I’m hoping it’s a photo that everyone can enjoy versus just bokeh lovers.

Cloud City, San Francisco
Ever wonder where George Lucas came up with the idea for “Cloud City” in the Empire Strikes Back? Something tells me his time in San Francisco was an inspiration.

My Guy
Not surprising my biggest photo subject of 2012 was my son. There were no shortage of photo opportunities and my iPhone was proof of that. At one point I had over 4000 photos of him on there. This photo was taken with a good old fashion DSLR and has been my desktop picture for most of 2012.

Frans Lanting, Thomas Mangelsen & Art Wolfe – Masters of Nature Photography
It’s always an amazing experience talking to a nature photography legend, but talking to 3 of them and getting to take their photo was a highlight of the year. Such was the case at the Masters of Nature Photography event in San Francisco in November of 2012.

CARMA Star Trails
My eBook Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time and Mastering Star Trail Photography video course inspired quite a few folks. I had the pleasure of helping one of my fans on private workshop and came away with my favorite star trail photo of the year in the White mountains of California.

My Robot
Timing is everything with a 2 year old. Perhaps I’m biased being the dad, but I thought this photo of my son in his robot halloween costume was great.

Enjoying the Maui Ocean Center
The one common thread across all the really great family photos I’ve taken is the connection between my son and others. It’s the more subtle moments with this connection that I find work best.  This moment at the aquarium exemplified this subtle connection quite well making it a personal favorite.

Wrap Recap: Best 10 DIY Xmas Gift Wrappings from Reddit

01 Jan

[ By WebUrbanist in Design & Products & Packaging. ]

creative gift wrapping ideas

The best thing come in small packages – or around them. Among other places, Reddit was abuzz this year with simple but brilliant gift-wrap ideas, often done on low (or no) budget but with incredible ingenuity and enviable craftiness – here are some of the most brilliant examples of 2012, followed by a few from past holiday seasons as well, each linked back to the post within various niche SubReddits.

gift paper rip cord

Under /r/LifeProTips, an industrious user linked their work on Instructables, introducing “Rip Cord wWrapping  for your quick-open convenience. I wrap all my gifts with a rip cord incorporated into it. Use a length of ribbon or a strip of tape along the middle of your gift wrap and include a tab along the edge to make it easier to quick-open your gift.” The built-in ripcord-ribbon is wrapped around then tied to a pull tab for super-fast present access – great for impatient friends and family!

gift paper angry diy

For those with somewhat mixed feelings about the holiday and its associated spirit, someone uploaded the above custom angry-self wrapping paper to /r/Funny.

gift infected zombie paper

Under /r/Zombies, one woman wrote that her husband’s present had become infected, then linked to the image above. A very simple idea, technically and otherwise, that just incorporates two layers of paper instead of one.

gift portal wrapping idea

Another Redditor posted a example in /r/Portal of an excellent game-themed optical illusion – now that gift-wrapper was, as they say, definitely thinking in Portals.

gift custom minecraft box

And speaking of geeky options, /r/Minecraft fans just love seeing pixelated gaming elements come to life, like this do-it-yourself box, created as follows: “Acquired a small wood box from a local hobby store. Attached all textures using mod podge and coated the outside to seal the paper in. This is the finished and dried product”

How to Select the Best Camera Bags – Photography Lessons by Berger Bros Camera

25 Dec

berger-bros.com How do you select the best camera bag for your needs? Yvonne Berger, one of the photography instructors at Berger Bros Camera in Amityville and Syosset Long Island, explains What kind and how many camera bags you will need. Should you have one camera bag or more than one? There answer is that you should have many because there are many different occasions where you will need to have just a small bag for limited camera equipment, while on other occasions you will need a larger bag to carry a lot of different pieces of camera equipment and gadgets. If you’re just going out on a day trip type of shoot you might need one camera and one lens. In that instance Top Loader would be the best choice because it’s small and compact. If, however, you have a lot of equipment, or maybe you’re traveling with a laptop you might need something like a Think Tank bag because it has a lot of different dividers and can hold a lot of different kinds of equipment. If you’re hiking and planning on taking nature photographs and you need to have your arms free then a back pack is an excellent choice. For more information on camera bags go to www.Berger-Bros.com

How to attach and use the shoulder strap with the Think Tank Speed Belt Packs. The Speed Demon, Speed Freak and Speed Racer each include a padded shoulder strap for carrying the pack as a shoulder bag instead of a belt pack. The strap can also be worn with the belt to give additional support while carrying heavy equipment. For more information about the belt packs and other Think Tank Photo products, please click on one of the following links: Think Tank Belt Packs: www.thinktankphoto.com Think Tank Photo homepage: www.thinktankphoto.com
