Video: How phase detection autofocus works

Have you ever wondered how your DSLR’s autofocus works? Wonder no more! YouTuber ZY Productions has created a succinct video that details how phase detection autofocus (PDAF) systems work inside DSLR cameras.

As noted in the video, the phase detection autofocus mentioned in this video applies specifically to DSLRs, since it relies on a dedicated autofocus sensor and a translucent section of a DSLR’s mirror to achieve focus — components you won’t find inside a mirrorless camera.

The exact type of autofocus system depends entirely on what camera you have. Newer DSLRs have robust autofocus systems, with more image coverage and more cross-type focus points — the importance of which is documented in the video — while older cameras might not have as much coverage or as many cross-type focus points (if any at all).

Regardless of what DSLR you use and how capable its autofocus system is, knowing how your camera’s autofocus works and what its shortcomings are should help you to overcome any issues and limitations you come across.

Tamron acknowledges 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD autofocus issue

Autofocus issues with Tamron’s new 28-75mm F2.8 for E-mount have been reported by some users, and the company has issued an official acknowledgement of the problems. While there’s no fix just yet, Tamron says it is ‘evaluating the cause of the error’ and researching a solution. The company says it will issue a firmware update, which thanks to the open nature of Sony’s E-Mount standard, users will be able to apply the new firmware directly through the camera.

The issue specifically manifests itself as a complete autofocus freeze or fail, and though Tamron states that it primarily occurs in video shooting, users have reported issues in stills shooting as well. It’s worth noting that in our experience with the lens so far, we have not noticed any focus problems to the degree we’ve seen from users on YouTube.

We did have a handful of images that were slightly front-focused throughout the course of shooting our sample gallery, but nothing terribly out of the ordinary or resembling a complete focus fail that required restarting the camera or removing and re-mounting the lens.

Video: Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 FE face and eye-detect autofocus test

The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD for Sony FE cameras made a big splash when it was first teased back in February. People were intrigued by its small size and the new Rapid eXtra-silent stepping drive (RXD) AF motor; it even came up in our CP+ interview with Tamron, and we got to see the lens in person at the show.

The lens isn’t going to be officially available for another week; however, photographer David Oastler was able to get his hands on a copy and, while he wasn’t allowed to take photos with it, he was allowed to put it through it’s autofocus paces to see how that RXD motor holds up.

What Oastler really wanted to see is how well the Eye and Face-detect autofocus from the Sony FE body would perform through this third-party lens that was, ostensibly, designed from the ground up to work on this full-frame mirrorless system. While the video isn’t the best quality (a bit of glare) you can still see, and Oastler tells you, that the lens performs exceptionally well. In fact, Oastler goes so far as to say he noticed no performance difference between the Tamron and his own Sony-native lenses.

Tamron promised as much when it released the lens, calling it “quiet, precise, and exceedingly quiet.” But it’s nice to see a real-world test confirm these claims.

We’ll be trying to get our hands on a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD as soon as humanly possible for our own in-depth testing. Meike announces full frame 85mm F1.8, its first autofocus lens

Chinese accessories brand Meike has announced it will introduce an autofocus 85mm F1.8 lens for Canon and Nikon full-frame DSLRs. In addition to adding another (very likely) affordable third party option to the mix, this will be the company’s first AF lens.

Details are a little thin on the ground, but early marketing materials suggest it will be a lightweight and compact lens with an all-metal body construction. The optical formula will use nine elements in six groups, and all elements will be multi-coated on both sides. Close focus will begin at 0.85m with a maximum magnification of 1:1.8. The lens will be 79.5mm long and will accept a 67mm filter.

In addition to the Nikon and Canon full-frame mounts, Meike will release the MK-85mm F1.8 lens for Sony APS-C models as well. No price has been announced as of yet, and the company hasn’t said when we should expect the lens to go on sale.

Tokina unveils the FíRIN 20mm F2.0 FE AF autofocus lens for Sony E-Mount

Well, that didn’t take long. Less than 12 hours after Nokishita shared some leaked photos and specs of the unreleased lens, Tokina has officially announced its latest piece of Sony E-Mount glass: the FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF.

The new lens is only the second prime lens in the FíRIN series of lenses designed specifically for mirrorless cameras, and it’s actually a followup to the first. The original FíRIN 20mm F2 FE was a manual focus lens, and the new AF version uses an identical optical design. But it doesn’t so much replace the old lens as sit next to it in Tokina’s lineup, giving users “two options … to choose [from] according to the purpose and style of shooting.”

Like its predecessor, the FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF boasts 13 lens elements in 11 groups, including two aspherical elements and three Super-low Dispersion elements that promise to do away with as much spherical aberration, distortion, and chromatic aberration as possible.

Unlike the manual focus version, this lens features a ring-type ultrasonic motor coupled with a GMR sensor for fast and silent focusing, and Tokina promises full compatibility with Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF system and all AF function settings, “providing the same AF performance as with common E-mount AF lenses.”

The FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF lens is tentatively scheduled to arrive at the end of April for Japanese customers, and end of May worldwide, but if you happen to be at CP+ next week, you can check out a prototype of the new lens at Tokina’s booth.

Overview

Optical correction

Due to the data transmittance ability via electric contacts the camera obtains necessary data from the lens chip to correct shading, distortion and lateral chromatic aberrations. Optical corrections can be done by the camera as well.

Image Stabilization

By transmitting focal length data FíRIN 20mm F2 FE AF is able to get maximum use of In-Body Image Stabilization function of the camera.

Leak: Samyang to announce autofocus 14mm F2.8 lens for Canon EF mount

Nokishita has gotten their hands on two lens photos that have Canon users buzzing this morning. Just days after Yongnuo announced its (probably very cheap) YN 14mm F2.8 for Canon, Samyang/Rokinon are reportedly preparing to do you one better by releasing its own AF 14mm F2.8 for EF mount.

We have no details about the lens beyond the photos above, but if (or more likely when) this lens is announced, it will be the first Samyang autofocus lens for Canon’s EF mount—so far, all of the Samyang/Rokinon AF lenses released have been made for Sony’s FE mount.

Nokishita typically releases leaked image like the ones above only a day or two (if not hours) before the official announcement, so stay tuned for more.

Canon’s PowerShot G1 X Mark III is a 24MP APS-C compact with DSLR-like autofocus

Canon has introduced the PowerShot G1 X Mark III – the third and latest model in its premium G1 X-series. The G1 X Mark III borrows its 24MP APS-C sensor, Dual Pixel AF system and DIGIC 7 processor from Canon’s ILCs, such as the EOS 77D and EOS M5, but adds a fixed 24-72mm equivalent F2.8-5.6 zoom and combines them into a relatively compact body weighing just 400g/14oz. In other words, you’re essentially getting a fixed-lens version of the EOS M5 that fits in the palm of your hand.

We’re already familiar with the sensor and the Dual Pixel AF system and as such, we’re hoping for good results from both. The lens has nine elements, three of which are double-sided aspherical, a built-in three-stop neutral density filter and image stabilization with up to four stops of shake reduction.

The Mark III can shoot continuous bursts at up to 9 fps with AF/AE locked on the first shot or 7 fps with continuous AF. The buffer fills up after around 19 Raw or 24 JPEGs, depending on which mode you’re using. Battery life is disappointing, with a CIPA rating of only 200 shots per charge (which assumes you’re using the flash 50% of the time). So, while you’ll usually get more than this number from the camera, you’re still likely to appreciate a second battery or get used to constantly worrying about where your next top-up is coming from.

The Mark III moves away from the blocky design of its predecessors, and now looks nearly identical to its baby brother the PowerShot G5 X, which uses a much smaller 1″-type sensor. The G1 X III has an SLR-style design, featuring dials on the front and back, a built-in flash, an OLED viewfinder and fully articulating LCD. Canon says that the shutter release has been designed in such a way to make it feel similar to a DSLR. The body is sealed against dust and moisture.

Other features include 1080/60p and time-lapse video capture, Wi-Fi with NFC and Bluetooth, and (long overdue in our opinion) a Panoramic Shot Mode.

The PowerShot G1 X Mark III is set to ship in November at $ 1299. Optional accessories include a dedicated lens hood ($ 59), underwater housing ($ 499) and leather case ($ 99).

Samyang unveils 35mm F1.4 autofocus lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless

Samyang has officially unveiled its fourth autofocus lens for Sony FE mount cameras: the long-rumored Samyang AF 35mm F1.4 FE. The new 35mm joins Samyang’s three other AF lenses—the AF 14mm f/2.8 FE, AF 35mm f/2.8 FE and AF 50mm f/1.4 FE—and offers Sony full-frame mirrorless shooters yet another affordable (and fast) prime to shoot with.

As with all previous Samyang autofocus FE lenses, the company claims that they offer exceptional image quality across the whole image field.

This particular lens features 11 lens elements in 9 groups, including 2 aspherical lenses and 2 high-refractive lenses. At its core is a 9 (circular) blade aperture that opens up all the way to F1.4, and a Linear Super Sonic Motor promises “fast, precise and quiet autofocus performance.”

The lens is scheduled to ship in November at a suggested retail price of £600 and €650, which should put US pricing around $ 750. To learn more about the new lens, head over to the Samyang website.

Why should you care about the Sony RX10 IV? Phase detection autofocus, that’s why

The Sony RX10 IV is a fixed lens camera with a 1″-type sensor and 24-600mm equivalent lens that can shoot 4K video or stills at 24 fps, but that’s not what we think is interesting about it. The addition of phase detection autofocus is pivotal to all of those features. If you have a little over a minute to spare, we’ll tell you why. And for bonus points, we shot this video entirely hand-held with an RX10 IV and continuous AF turned on.
