Canon announces five PowerShot compacts

Canon has introduced five PowerShot models, ranging from budget to midrange. The SX610 HS has a 25-450mm equiv. lens, 20.2MP BSI-CMOS sensor, 3″ LCD, Wi-Fi with NFC, 1080/30p video. Stepping up to the SX710 HS adds a 25-750mm lens, DIGIC 6 processor (the only model with this), and 60p video. The SX530 HS pairs a 16MP BSI-CMOS sensor with a whopping 24-1200mm lens. On the budget end there’s the ELPH 170 that has a 20MP CCD, 25-300mm lens, and 720p video. A cheaper ELPH 160 has a 28-224mm lens and no image stabilization. More details

Toshiba announces world’s first SDHC card with NFC

Toshiba has announced an SDHC card equipped with NFC, claiming it to be the world’s first. With the corresponding ‘Memory Card Preview’ app downloaded to a mobile device, the user can tap the card to view thumbnails of 16 images and see available storage. Read more

Kodak announces IM5 Android smartphone

Before CES there were rumors that we would see a Kodak-branded mobile device at the show, but those who were expecting an innovative, imaging-centric gadget have been disappointed. The Kodak IM5 has arrived and appears to be nothing more than a nondescript, mid-tier Android smartphone with Kodak branding. Read more

Asus announces Zenfone Zoom smartphone with 3x optical zoom

At its CES press conference in Las Vegas Asus has announced the ZenFone Zoom, a smartphone with 3x optical zoom lens that is only 12mm thin. The ZenFone Zoom runs Android 5.0 and features a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS screen and up to 128GB of built-in storage. Read more

Fujifilm announces XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens

Fujifilm has officially released its XF 16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens, which the company teased on last year’s lens roadmap. The 16-55mm is equivalent to 24-84mm when mounted on an X-series body and offers an internal focusing system and ‘twin linear motor’ which Fujifilm says will allow for fast and silent AF. The lens is sealed in fourteen places and has three aspherical and three ED elements and a Nano-GI coating to reduce flare. Read more

Ricoh announces it will launch Pentax DSLR in spring and lenses later

06 Jan

Pentax owner Ricoh has released very limited details of a DSLR and a collection of three lenses that it says it will launch in the future. Reference images that accompany the announcement appear to show a mid-range APS-C DSLR that the company says will feature a CMOS sensor. This may arrive in stores in spring this year. The camera is shown with a new 18-50mm f/4-5.6 collapsible zoom lens attached – which will be available at about the same time. Read more

ProGearX announces new line of GoPro accessories

ProGearX has announced the availability of several new accessories for mounting GoPro action cameras to a variety of surfaces. Among the new accessories is an extendable pole, body mounts, and a kit for mounting the action cam on different sports boards. Luminous Endowment announces first round of grant winners

The Luminous Endowment, an charitable fund headed by Michael Reichmann, has announced its first round of grant recipients. Reichmann is the founder of Luminous Landscape, a website dedicated to fine art photography. His focus has shifted recently to the creation of the endowment, which awards merit-based grants to photographers seeking to start or complete projects, books or exhibitions. Read more

Not dead yet: Sony announces three A-mount lenses

Among all of the excitement around the a7 II, Sony quietly announced a new A-mount lens last week. The 70-300mm F4.5 – F5.6 G SSM II lens for A-mount offers faster AF tracking, a new Nano AR coating, and weatherproofing, and will be available in February for $ 1150. The company also announced the development of Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70mm F2.8 ZA SSM II and 16-35mm F2.8 ZA SSM II A-mount lenses, which will arrive next Spring with similar improvements. Read more

Sony announces US pricing for full-frame Alpha 7 II

Sony Electronics has announced US pricing and availability for its recently announced Alpha 7 II camera. The a7 II is the world’s first full-frame camera with in-body image stabilization (5-axis, no less), and also offers improved controls, focusing performance, and video specs. It will be available on December 9th for $ 1700 body only and $ 2000 with the 28-70mm F3.5-5.6 FE lens. We’ll be getting our hands on a beta version shortly and will post samples as soon as possible. Read more
