Sigma announces pricing for 18-35mm T2 and 50-100mm T2 Cine lenses

Sigma announced its new line of cinema lenses back in September. Today it announced that the first two lenses in that line to go on sale, the 18-35mm T2 and 50-100 T2, will both ship on December 9, 2016 for $ 4000 each. Both will be available in EF, E and PL mounts.

These weatherproof lenses are completely mechanical and designed for use with ultra high resolution cameras, including those capable of 6 and 8K capture. And another five lenses are slated to join the new cinema line over the course of 2017 including a 24-35 F2.2 and a 20mm, 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 80mm set of T1.5 primes.

Macphun announces Luminar photo editing app for Mac

Macphun, the company behind Aurora HDR, has announced Luminar, an all-in-one photo editing app for Mac. The photo editor was designed for users of all skill levels, and includes a user interface that can be tailored to each user’s specific needs.

Luminar includes a variety of tools for processing images, including native Raw processing, more than 35 photo filter sets including Photo Filter Emulation and Cross-Processing, presets, layers, brushes and masking, spot healing, noise reduction and ‘personalized darkrooms’ called Workspaces. Macphun also mentions a sky replacement tool to tease some of the other more advanced features the software will offer.

Macphun says it will open Luminar to pre-orders on November 2 with the official launch scheduled for November 17. New customers will pay $ 59, while existing customers will be charged less at $ 49. Those who pre-order the software will receive an exclusive video series dubbed Photography Essentials and Marketing Guide for Photographers by Will Burrad-Lucas.

Nikon announces ultra-wide PC Nikkor 19mm F4E ED tilt-shift lens

Nikon has announced a new PC Nikkor 19mm F4E ED tilt-shift lens (which the company calls ‘Perspective Control.’) This ultra-wide lens offers 97° of coverage and can shift ±12mm and tilt ±7.5°. Unlike the company’s existing PC-E designs, the mechanism for tilt can be rotated independently from the mechanism for shift, allowing the tilt to be set either parallel or perpendicular to the shift.  The lens has three ED and two aspherical elements as well as Nano Crystal Coating.

The lens will be available next month with an MSRP of $ 3399.95.

Leica announces special edition M-P in red table tennis bat rubber

Leica is to introduce a special M-P (Typ 240) kit that has been designed by the artist Rolf Sachs. The bundle will include a Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH lens and SF40 flash unit, and the body will be covered in the type of rubber usually reserved for table tennis bats. The red rubber will have the raised pips that table tennis players use to spin and control the ball, which Leica suggests will give the camera sure handling – and the nickname M-P ‘Grip’.

Sachs says on his website, ‘Our primary goal in designing the camera was driven by a utilitarian approach, seeking a specialist grip material that would respond to the scale of the camera with millimetre precision. Following in-depth research into materials that have strong ‘gripping’ properties and are traditionally applied in other manufacturing industries, we decided on a red ‘ping pong’ rubber, usually used on table tennis bats. This material adds practical tactility to the camera, while simultaneously creating an entirely new haptic experience.’

Not only is the body-cover red, but the company has used red paint in the engraved markings on the top plate dials as well as on the distance scale and focal length markings on the barrel of the lens.

The camera, lens and flash kit will come in a hard carry case and will be accompanied by a pair of brushes designed to keep the textured surface of the camera clean.

Only 79 kits will be produced world-wide, and when they become available in November they will be priced at $ 14,950/£12,500.

Legendary rangefinder technology meets creative design

In collaboration with artist and Leica photographer Rolf Sachs, Leica has unveiled a new special edition within its M-series camera portfolio: the Leica M-P (Typ 240) “grip” by Rolf Sachs.

This exclusive set comprises a Leica M-P camera body, together with a classic, fast Leica Summilux-M 35mm f/1.4 ASPH. lens, and unites the company’s legendary rangefinder technology with an exceptionally creative product design. With its unusual finish and striking choice of colour, combined with Leica’s classic camera styling, this unique set is destined to become a true collector’s item. The Leica M-P “grip” by Rolf Sachs special edition will be strictly limited to just 79 sets globally.

“For many photographers over many years, the Leica M has been a passionate love affair! Its functionality and iconic design attracts me as an artist and an avid user. With the Leica M-P “grip” by Rolf Sachs, the artist chose to modify several features of the Leica M-P rangefinder in black paint finish, delivering the unique style he envisaged for the camera. For the main body finish, Sachs selected a material that is most frequently used in the production of table tennis bats. Applied to the camera body, the raised red nubs of this rubber trim lend the otherwise subtle and simple appearance of the M a distinctive and extraordinary look and feel – while also creating a completely new haptic experience.

Several elements on the top plate have been harmonised with the colour scheme of the camera trim. The engravings on the accessory shoe, shutter speed dial, on/off switch, video button and shutter release button are highlighted in red, rather than the usual white.

A ‘Rolf Sachs’ logo graces the back of the top plate as the designer’s signature mark, while the individual special edition number of each camera is engraved on the hot shoe. Furthermore, the engraved settings on the lens are also partly accentuated in red.

The Leica M-P “grip” by Rolf Sachs set is presented in a hard black outdoor case containing the camera, the lens, a black cotton carrying strap and a Leica SF 40 flash unit. BenQ announces 32″ 4K high dynamic range monitor

BenQ America will be showing its new 32″ 4K UHD high dynamic range monitor at PhotoPlus Expo later this month. The wide gamut SW320 offers 99% Adobe RGB and 100% sRGB/Rec. 709 color space coverage, and 10-bit panels should ensure smooth gradients. The display has built-in tools that integrate with color calibrators, allowing them to access the 14-bit internal LUT for more accurate calibration (compared to adjusting the – typically – 8-bit video card output.) These are some very high-end features that discerning photographers are sure to appreciate.

What separates the SW320 from the SW2700PT (aside from size) is its support for high dynamic range input. We’ve reached out to BenQ for further comment on what the capabilities of this monitor are with respect to HDR, but our hopes are that the HDR certification means a higher static contrast ratio than the SW2700PT (which sports 1000:1 contrast, typical of IPS panels), and perhaps greater brightness as well. This will be important to content creators generating photos/videos for HDR displays, and also makes content consumption far more pleasing than one may be used to on IPS displays.

For video pros, BenQ will also be displaying its PV270, a 27″ Technicolor Color Certified 4K UHD monitor, which offers 10-bit panels with 100% Rec. 709 and sRGB color space coverage, albeit considerably less coverage of Adobe RGB than the SW320 or SW2700PT (the PV270 is technically not a ‘wide gamut’ monitor).

The SW and PV lines of monitors from BenQ are excellent for color critical work, as they are capable of reproducing color tones with Delta-E values ? 2, and have addressable 14-bit internal 3D LUTs for accurate color calibration.

Both monitors will be available in January. Pricing has not been disclosed.

Sony announces Cyber-shot RX100 Mark V with 315 phase-detection AF points

Sony has announced the latest version of its RX100 series: the Mark V. It maintains a 20MP sensor and 24-70mm equiv. F1.8-2.8 lens, but adds phase-detection AF to achieve focus speeds as fast as 0.05 sec, and a front-end LSI to improve speed of operation and buffering.

The Sony Cyber-shot RX100 V offers what Sony calls ‘professional level AF performance’ in the form of a new sensor with 315 phase-detection AF points over 65% of the frame, claiming the world’s fastest AF speed at 0.05 seconds. The front-end LSI gives a turbo boost to performance, allowing the sensor to be read faster and more data to be buffered. That means the Mark V now offers 24 fps shooting at full 20.1MP resolution with autofocus and auto exposure for up to 150 frames for JPEG + Raw. That’s stills shooting at movie frame rates, folks. Eye AF is also available in AF-C mode. 

The Mark V’s video is also improved. It creates UHD 4K from a 5028 x 2828 pixel region. This means it oversamples by 1.3x in each dimension (1.7x overall), to give highly detailed 4K footage. The faster sensor readout thanks to the LSI also means less rolling shutter in 4K video and electronic stills, inching these cameras ever closer to the global shutter ideal. The camera maintains the ability to use its phase detection AF during video shooting, but no touchscreen severely reduces usability. 960 fps and all other slow motion modes are now available with twice the recording duration of the RX100 IV – up to 8 seconds of 40x slow motion at 960 fps. S-Log2/S-Gamut and Picture Profiles are also available to videographers, as is 1080/120p. 

An ‘anti-distortion’ fully electronic shutter is available up to 1/32000 sec, and in fact the electronic shutter automatically kicks in for shutter speeds greater than 1/2000s, or frame rates greater than 10 fps. Turns out it’s hard to operate a leaf shutter at 24 fps…

The camera’s 3″ 1229k-dot, non-touchscreen LCD tilts a full 180 degrees upward and 45 degrees downward. It retains a pop-up viewfinder, with a 2.4M-dot OLED panel. Wi-Fi is available as expected, with the added benefit of being able to read QR codes to help make a wireless connection when NFC isn’t an option. A new underwater case is available, compatible with the entire RX100 series and making it possible to use the camera up to 40m underwater.

It will be available in October for $ 1000/€1200.

NEW YORK, Oct. 6, 2016 – Sony – a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer – has today announced a new flagship model for their popular Cyber-shot RX100 series of compact cameras, the RX100 V (model DSC-RX100M5).

The exciting new camera brings a new level of AF performance and speed to today’s compact camera market. It is equipped with a Fast Hybrid AF system with the world’s fastest AF acquisition1 at 0.05 seconds2 and world’s highest number of AF points on sensor1 with 315 points covering approximately 65% of the frame. The camera can also shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps3 – the world’s fastest for a compact camera1 – at full 20.1 MP (approx. effective) resolution with AF/AE tracking for up to 150 continuous shots4.

The RX100 V is equipped with a newly developed 1.0-type stacked Exmor RS™ CMOS sensor with a DRAM chip, a ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-70 mm5 F1.8 – 2.8 large aperture lens and an enhanced image processing system with a new front-end LSI chip that maximizes processing speed, expands the memory buffer and optimizes image quality, in particular at high ISO settings. Fast Focusing, Fast Shooting

A first for Sony’s RX100 series of cameras, the new RX100 V model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that combines the respective advantages of focal-plane phase detection AF and contrast detection AF and ultimately enables the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.05 seconds2. This high speed focusing is a perfect complement to the 315 dedicated AF points that cover 65% of the sensor, and ensures that shooters will be able to capture their intended subject with high speed and accuracy, even if it’s moving rapidly in unpredictable directions.

Additionally, processing speed has been greatly enhanced through the addition of a front-end LSI that perfectly supports the camera’s BIONZ X® image processing engine. These two components combined with the powerful AF system allow the camera to shoot continuously at speeds of up to 24 fps 3 at full 20.1 MP (approx. effective) resolution for up to 150 shots4 with AF/AE tracking. Viewfinder blackout between shots has also been minimized in this high-speed shooting mode, which greatly improves photographers’ ability to follow fast action and capture the decisive moment. Silent shooting is also available in these high-speed modes as well8.

Other advancements to AF performance on the new RX100 V include the addition of AF-A mode, which allows the camera to automatically switch between continuous and single-shot AF modes. Users can also manually select if they’d like the continuous AF and phase detection AF areas to be displayed live on screen while they are framing a shot.

The RX100 V also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum speed of 1/32000 second) that minimizes the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects. This fast shutter speed also allows the camera to capture sharp, crystal clear images with a wide open aperture at brightness levels up to EV199. Shooting at wide aperture with the fast shutter speed allows photographers and videographers to capture beautiful content with sharply focused subjects and defocused backgrounds under some of the most difficult, bright lighting conditions.

New on the RX100 V, users can freely select the initial magnification ratio when shooting in a mode with Focus Magnifier, and can select between “focus point” and “center of display” for the location of Focus Magnifier.

Professional Movie Functionality

The pocket-friendly RX100 V is packed with a variety of video capabilities that will satisfy even the most demanding video enthusiasts.

With Fast Hybrid AF, the focal plane phase detection AF sensor ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4K movie shooting. AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system, giving shooters plenty of flexibility based on their focusing preferences.

In 4K mode 6, the new RX100 V utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and ‘jaggies’. These high-quality results are achieved through use of the XAVC S codec, which records video at a high data rate of up to 100 Mbps during 4K recording and 50 Mbps during full HD shooting10.

Additional professional caliber video features include Picture Profile, S-Log2/S-Gamut, 120p HD Full HD mode and more. Users also have the ability to manually select a frame from a recorded movie and save it as a still image file of approximately 8 MP during 4K shooting or 2 MP during HD shooting.

The RX100 V is able to record super-slow motion video7 at up to 40x slower than the standard rate, and can do this for about twice as long as the RX100 IV model. This extended time allowing users to capture a series of high-speed, fleeting moments of action with incredible detail, resolution and clarity.

Prior to shooting, users will have the ability to choose among 960fps, 480fps and 240 fps frame rates and among 60p, 30p and 24p playback formats to optimize the recording to fit the speed of the moving subject, with the option to use the movie record button as a ‘start trigger’ to begin recording once button is pressed or ‘end trigger’ to record footage up until the button is pressed.

Pocket-Friendly Design, Premium Performance

Sony announces price and release date for FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS

Sony has released information regarding the availability and price of its delayed 70-200mm GM lens for its E-mount system. The FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS was originally supposed to arrive in June or July this year, but the company announced it would be delayed until this month. The good news is that the lens will become available for sale on September 30th, but the bad news is that those orders could take up to three months to fulfill as Sony expects the lens to popular and that demand will out-strip supply for some time.

Sony has also said that the 2x converter that goes with the lens will be on sale at the same time, while the 1.4x model can be ordered at the end of October.

The company displays prices of 330,000 yen (approx $ 3300) for the lens and 70,000 yen (approx $ 700) for the 2x and 1.4x converter, though retailers are advertising the lens for the $ 2600/£2500 originally quoted.

Sony announces alpha 99 Mark II

Sony has announced the a99 II, a 42MP A mount SLT camera to mark the tenth anniversary of the alpha series. It features 5-axis image stabilization and 4K photo with no binning.

The camera will be capable of shooting at 12 frames per second with AF/AE tracking. It has 79 AF points on its dedicated PDAF sensor, which work in conjunction with 399 on-sensor PDAF points.

Kimio Maki VP of Digital Imaging Group said: the market is changing. The move is towards an increased proportion of enthusiast photographers, he said. These customers demand sensitivity, resolution and speed.

Canon has announced two new lenses ahead of Photokina, unveiling an updated EF 70-300mm with an LCD panel and a versatile EF-M 18-150mm for its mirrorless line.

The EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM updates a lens from 2005 with a Nano USM motor, offering USM motor focusing for stills and a quieter STM stepping motor for video AF. It’s the second Canon lens to offer this type of motor; the first was the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM introduced in February.

The 70-300mm II’s information panel can be used to display focusing distance, focal length and ‘shake amount’. The lens claims four stops of shake correction, uses one UD element to reduce chromatic aberration and offers a close focusing distance of about 1.2m/4ft.

The EF-M 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS brings a 29-240mm equivalent zoom to Canon’s mirrorless system. Its image stabilization also claims 4 stops of shake correction.

The Canon EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM will go on sale in November for $ 550. The Canon EF-M 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM will sell for $ 500 in December in graphite and silver.

Canon has announced two new lenses ahead of Photokina, unveiling an updated EF 70-300mm with an LCD panel and a versatile EF-M 18-150mm for its mirrorless line.

The EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM updates a lens from 2005 with a Nano USM motor, offering USM motor focusing for stills and a quieter STM stepping motor for video AF. It’s the second Canon lens to offer this type of motor; the first was the 18-135mm F3.5-5.6 IS USM introduced in February.

The 70-300mm II’s information panel can be used to display focusing distance, focal length and ‘shake amount’. The lens claims four stops of shake correction, uses one UD element to reduce chromatic aberration and offers a close focusing distance of about 1.2m/4ft.

The EF-M 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS brings a 29-140mm equivalent zoom to Canon’s mirrorless system. Its image stabilization also claims 4 stops of shake correction.

The Canon EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM will go on sale in November for $ 550. The Canon EF-M 18-150mm F3.5-6.3 IS STM will sell for $ 500 in December in graphite and silver.
