Canon announces C700 FF cinema camera: now with full frame

Canon has announced the newest member of its Cinema EOS camera family, the EOS C700 FF. As the name implies, it’s an updated version of Canon’s C700 cinema camera that includes a full frame sensor in place of a Super 35 sensor.

On most cameras we generally think of ‘full frame’ as representing a 24x36mm frame with a 3:2 aspect ratio, but the C700 FF defines this a bit differently. The Canon-developed sensor used in the camera has a native resolution of 5952 x 3140 pixels, providing a 17:9 cinema-friendly aspect ratio, and has an imaging area of 38.1×20.1mm in size.

While that’s a bit wider and shorter than a standard full frame sensor, it requires the same image circle size as a full frame DSLR,* meaning the C700 FF can use Canon’s entire line of EF-mount lenses at their standard focal lengths. For maximum flexibility, the C700 FF can be ordered with either EF or PL-mount.

With 5.9K resolution, the camera is able to record oversampled 4K video internally, which should provide superior results to a native 4K sensor. Users can choose between two codecs to capture footage internally: Canon’s own XF-AVC or Apple ProRes. Additionally, the C700 FF can record Raw video when using an optional Codex recorder mounted to the back of the camera, recording at up to 5.9K/60p in Raw.

In addition to impressive video resolution, Canon claims the new sensor exceeds 15 stops of dynamic range when shooting with either the Canon Log2 gamma curve or in Raw, which should make it an effective tool for producing HDR video content.

The EOS C700 FF has an estimated retail price of $ 33,000, and will be available in both EF and PL mount versions. It’s expected to be available in July. Existing C700 owners will have the option of upgrading their camera from a Super 35 sensor to the new full frame sensor, though upgrade pricing has not been announced.

In addition to a new camera, Canon announced a couple other useful tools for filmmakers. The new CN-E20 mm T1.5 L F is a fully manual, 20mm cinema prime lens, filling a hole between Canon’s existing 14mm and 24mm cinema primes. The lens includes 300 degrees of focus rotation, minimized focus breathing, and an 11-blade diaphragm for high quality bokeh even when stopping down. It will be available in fall 2018. Pricing was not announced.

Canon also announced a couple professional 4K HDR reference displays: the 24-inch DP-V2421 and 17-inch DP-V1711. With features like 12G-SDI terminals supporting 4K 60p footage, support for Canon’s Log gamma curves, built-in waveform monitor, and built-in HDR metering, these displays should deliver impressive results – but it will cost you. The 24-inch model will sell for $ 39,000 and the 17-inch model for $ 18,000, and both will be available at the end of April.

* The image diagonal of a 3:2 ratio full frame camera is 43.2mm while the image diagonal of the C700 FF’s 17:9 sensor is 43mm.

MELVILLE, N.Y., March 28, 2018 – Canon U.S.A. Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, is excited to announce the EOS C700 FF, the Company’s first full-frame cinema camera. The beauty and majesty of full-frame digital cinema is now becoming a new creative reality. Since the introduction of the EOS 5D Mark II DSLR camera in 2008, Canon has been a part of the full-frame video movement, and the introduction of the C700 FF has reinforced Canon’s commitment to this market. At the heart of the camera is a novel Canon-developed CMOS image sensor having a total of 5952 (H) x 3140 (V) photosites with a digital cinema 17:9 aspect ratio, which gives it the same image circle size as the full frame EOS 5D camera series. This supports a wide range of shooting options.

Available in both PL and EF Mount, the EOS C700 FF provides users with the same outstanding performance, operation and modular design as the EOS C700 (released in December 2016). The camera is being shown publicly for the first time at the Canon booth (C4325) at the NAB Show 2018 in Las Vegas from April 9-12.

“Since the launch of Canon’s Cinema EOS line of products in November 2011, the goal was to one day develop a cinema camera worthy of being the ‘A’ camera on major Hollywood productions, and Canon met that goal with the introduction of the EOS C700,” said Yuichi Ishizuka, president and COO, Canon U.S.A., Inc. “After listening to our customers and closely monitoring market trends, Canon set forth a new goal: to launch a full-frame cinema camera. Existing owners of Canon’s original EOS C700 cinema camera will be pleased to know they can have their Super 35mm sensor upgraded to the new Full-Frame sensor for a fee*. Authorized Canon facilities such as Canon Burbank are ready to process C700 upgrades as well as lens mount swaps, and offer equipment drop off, on-site repairs and upgrades, as well as equipment testing and demonstration.

The Sensor

The newly developed sensor featured in the EOS C700 FF has an active image area of 38.1 x 20.1mm and supports readout at full size, as well as Super 35mm, Super 16mm and anamorphic modes. In addition to full-frame lenses, it can be used with conventional Super 35mm lenses to originate 4K / UHD standardized production formats and Super 16mm lenses (with an adapter) to originate 2K / HD production formats in crop modes. The sensor captures wide tonality exceeding 15 stops of dynamic range and a wide color gamut meeting ITU-R BT.2020 standards. This offers broad latitude when grading, providing outstanding effectiveness in HDR video production.

Recording

The EOS C700 FF embodies a choice of two high-performance codecs for on-board recording –Canon XF-AVC or Apple ProRes. Like other cameras in the 4K Cinema EOS family, the EOS C700 FF uses CFast cards to capture 4K / UHD or 2K / HD. A striking feature of the C700 FF is the Oversampling 4K Processing that processes a 5.9K image capture to produce 4K (DCI or UHD) having enhanced image sharpness, curtailed moire, and a lowered visibility of noise at the higher ISO settings. This is especially advantageous for on-board anamorphic image capture. Low-rate 2K/HD proxy data including metadata, can be recorded to SD cards, ideal for offline editing. The camera also allows high-frame-rate recording of up to 168fps in 2K crop and relay or simultaneous recording onto both CFast cards. In addition, the C700 FF can shoot at a Full HD high-frame-rate recording at a maximum of 168 fps. Additional formats are planned with future firmware updates.

To further complement the features of the EOS C700 FF, Canon has turned to its trusted partner Codex to provide a fully integrated (no cables) recording and workflow option. The combination of the optional Codex CDX-36150 recorder docked onto the back of the EOS C700 FF enables 5.9K 60 fps RAW recording, 4K RAW up to 72 fps (in 24p mode), 4K ProRes up to 60 fps and 2K ProRes up to 168 fps (in Super 16mm mode).

The C700 FF also supports the latest version (1.0) of the ACESproxy, the ACES (Academy Color Encoding System) color management transmission standard.

HDR

For users looking to create High Dynamic Range (HDR) imagery, the EOS C700 FF is an excellent solution, providing 15 stops of latitude (with Canon Log2 only), along with Canon’s proprietary Log Gammas (Canon Log3, Canon Log2 and Canon Log) and renowned color science. Canon Log2 is recommended when originating HDR imagery containing both highlight details and deep shadowed details. In comparison with Canon Log, Canon Log3 offers a wider dynamic range while retaining performance in darker regions.

Additionally, these cameras seamlessly integrate with Canon’s latest professional 4K UHD Reference Displays for on-set review and color management that conforms to SMPTE ST 2084 standards of HDR display.

The look of a cinematic production begins with the lens, and the EOS C700 FF offers both PL and EF lens mount options which are interchangeable at a Canon authorized service center. For full frame imaging, the EF lens mount version of the new EOS C700 FF is compatible with Canon’s family of seven Cinema Prime lenses, including the newly announced CN-E20mm T1.5 L F lens, as well as the diverse lineup of over 70 interchangeable EF lenses. The EF mount supports Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF technology and Dual Pixel Focus Guide. The Focus Guide assists operators with a precision visual indicator in the viewfinder when pulling focus. Alternatively, for certain demanding shooting situations the reliable capabilities of Dual Pixel CMOS AF can be deployed. The EOS C700 FF PL mount version is also compatible with Cooke’s /i metadata communication technology.

Phottix announces Odin II TTL flash trigger for Pentax shooters

Flash manufacturer Phottix has announced it will introduce an Odin ll transmitter for Pentax users in April. Designed with ‘direct cooperation’ from Pentax engineers, Odin claims the trigger has been extensively tested on the 645Z medium format camera and the company’s flagship K-1 DSLR. It also said to be compatible with the K-5 and K-7 models.

The Odin ll transmitter will allow users to control the Phottix Indra studio heads as well as the Juno manual hotshoe flash unit. The press release doesn’t mention the Mitros + TTL flash unit, though it should be able to control that off-camera via the Odin system—if not via the hotshoe. Users will also be able to use Strato ll, Atlas ll and the Ares ll receivers to control and trigger third party flash units.

As with other Odin ll transmitters, the Pentax model will offer 32 channels and five groups with which to control off-camera heads via a wireless 2.4GHz radio system, and high speed sync will be supported with shutter speeds of up to 1/8000sec.

Sigma announces nine full-frame E-mount Art primes

Sigma has announced plans to bring seven of its existing full-frame Art-series primes, plus two newly-announced lenses, to E-mount. Sigma says that the E-mount versions will offer “a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed.” The lenses will work with Sony’s AF-C mode, and as with existing lenses adapted via MC-11, will work with in-camera stabilization and in-camera lens corrections.

SIGMA launches seven interchangeable Art prime lenses for Sony E-mount cameras with full-frame sensors

SIGMA Corporation is pleased to announce the upcoming launch of interchangeable lenses for the Sony E-mount digital camera series with full-frame image sensors. SIGMA will gradually introduce the lenses as members of the Art line, which offers photographers the highest level of optical performance.

While offering the same high-performance optical design as other lenses in the Art line, the new Sony E-mount models will feature a newly developed control algorithm that optimizes the autofocus drive and maximizes the data transmission speed. In addition, these lenses will be compatible with Sony’s Continuous AF (AF-C) and high-speed autofocus, which are not addressed by SIGMA MOUNT CONVERTER MC-11. Like the converter MC-11, the lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization and in-camera lens aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion.

The lineup will include the Art line set of seven prime lenses covering 14mm to 135mm. It will also include two models that SIGMA will be exhibiting at CP+ 2018: 70mm F2.8 DG MACRO | Art and 105mm F1.4 DG HSM | Art (launch date TBD). Further, SIGMA plans to introduce additional Sony E-mount models in the Art line going forward.

Note: This product is developed, manufactured and sold based on the specifications of E-mount which was disclosed by Sony Corporation under the license agreement with Sony Corporation.

Key features

1. Autofocus tuned for each lens
Thanks to an autofocus drive control program tuned for each lens and high-speed data transmission, the lenses will offer high-speed autofocus at the same performance level as that of a lens designed exclusively for mirrorless cameras. In particular, in E-mount cameras offering Sony’s Fast Hybrid AF, AF-C mode will deliver exceptional subject following performance. Moreover, autofocus will remain extremely precise even in those E-mount cameras offering only contrast AF.

2. Compatible with in-camera image stabilization
The lenses will be compatible with in-camera image stabilization. The Sony E-mount camera senses the focal length of the lens and automatically optimizes image stabilization performance.

3. Data loaded for compatibility with in-camera aberration correction The lenses will be fully compatible with in-camera aberration correction, which includes corrections for peripheral illumination, chromatic aberrations, and distortion. By matching corrections to the optical characteristics of the lens, this function takes image quality to an even higher level.

4. Native mount for a more rigid and stable feel Making the mount native to the lens makes possible a more rigid and stable feel to the lens. Featuring a special surface treatment to enhance strength, the brass bayonet mount offers a high-precision fit and exceptional durability. The mount connection area incorporates rubber sealing for dust- and splash-proof construction.

5. Available Mount Conversion Service This service converts the mount of SIGMA lenses to that of a different camera body, allowing photographers to continue using their favorite lenses over the long term regardless of camera system.

Cactus announces palm-sized RQ250 wireless monolight

Cactus has just announced the RQ250: a ‘palm-sized’ bare-bulb flash head that will feature wireless control and three times the power of a typical GN60m hotshoe unit. The battery-powered RQ250 is designed to offer 250Ws of power to photographers who want to work on-location/in-the-field without carrying around bulky lighting equipment or sacrificing power by shooting with speedlights.

In fact, the RQ250 is so powerful for its form-factor that the company couldn’t find a bulb that suited what it wanted to achieve … so it designed one itself.

The head comes with a reflector dish fitted with frosted glass that Cactus claims produces hotspot-free illumination when combined with the TubeOne flash bulb. With the reflector removed, the flash tube extends into softboxes and umbrellas to produce even distribution of light.

The head will have its own mount, but will also accept Bowens-S mount modifiers via an adapter. Cactus will also offer a snoot kit that includes colored gels that attaches to the reflector, and an umbrella holder that will also mount the head onto a light stand.

The RQ250 has a built-in fan to ensure the head keeps firing even in hot conditions, and an on-axis LED provides a modeling light and can operate as an AF-assist lamp as well. The head will be able to perform high speed sync for use with short shutter speeds, and wireless TTL control will be possible with Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony cameras.

The unit is powered by a rechargeable lithium ion battery that Cactus says will be good for over 400 full-power bursts per charge. Designed to be portable, the RQ250 will measure 194x80x80mm.

Price has yet to be released, but Cactus promises to deliver the RQ250 sometime this summer. For more information, visit the Cactus website.

Cactus RQ250 Wireless Monolight

Cactus announces the RQ250, a palm-sized, bare-bulb wireless monolight that supports wireless TTL/HSS and gives you the best possible light in a compact body.

Photographers always want a high output portable flash with consistent light quality for location shooting. Cactus set out to create one of its own carrying the motto – if we do it, we will have to do it right. It has to be compact in size, outputs high quality of light, and versatile.

Today Cactus announces the RQ250 Wireless Monolight, a lithium-ion battery-powered wireless monolight with 250 Ws of power, which will be available THIS SUMMER.

“We could not find any off-the-shelf flash tube that meets our requirements for power output and uniform distribution of light in a built-in light modifier, so we designed one from the ground up for the RQ250,” said Henry Chan, head of Research and Development at Cactus.

What makes the RQ250 unique is its special flash head design. When paired with the optical optimized reflector, the TubeOneTM flash tube is able to deliver power with maximum efficiency. Hot spots are kept to a minimum, producing a pleasing and very usable, consistent light straight out of the included reflector.

Engineered for location shooting

When engineering the RQ250, Cactus always had location shooting in mind. Versatility is the key.

The detachable built-in reflector produces the best light possible with minimum hot spots even without an external light modifier. With the frosted glass lens, the RQ250 produces a beautiful and evenly spread of light. Remove the reflector and you will have a bare-bulb flash that excels in even light distribution when paired with soft boxes and studio umbrellas.

Despite its compact size, the RQ250 is fan-cooled which means it can be pushed without being stressed even on a hot, sunny day.

The perfect balance between size and power

Designed from the ground up, Cactus completed various design iterations and many rounds of testing to create the perfect balance between size and power.

Housed in its palm-sized body, the RQ250 is lithium-ion battery-powered, 250 Ws, and can fire 400 full-power flashes on a single charge. The extremely compact design comes with an on-axis LED modelling light, which also functions as an AF- assist.

Builds on cross-brand platform

Like Cactus’s triggering system, RQ250 also builds on a cross-brand platform that works with Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax, Sigma, and Sony cameras.

Canon announces EOS M50 with 24MP sensor, 4K video and built-in EVF

Canon has taken the wraps off the EOS M50, a beginner-friendly mirrorless camera that’s the first in the company’s M-series to offer 4K video capture. It uses a 24MP APS-C sensor with Dual Pixel autofocus, a new Digic 8 processor and unlike its M100 sibling, provides a built-in electronic viewfinder.

First Impressions

The M50 is also the first camera to offer a new CR3 Raw format. It provides a standard “image quality priority” Raw setting as well as a “size priority” C-Raw that produces up to 50% smaller files with the same resolution, albeit with a slight drop in image quality.

Wi-Fi, NFC and Bluetooth are also included, enabling a new option to automatically transfer images from the camera to a smartphone after each shot. The M50’s updated processor makes 1080/120p high frame rate video possible, and UHD 4K recording is available at 24p. Unfortunately, 4K also imposes a significant 1.6x crop and Dual Pixel isn’t available.

The camera’s 2.36 million-dot OLED EVF complements a 1.04 million-dot fully articulated touchscreen. With focus locked the M50 will shoot up to 10 fps; 7.4fps shooting is available in C-AF.

Dual Pixel autofocus provides improved coverage with certain lenses, including the EF-M 55-200mm, EF-M 18-150mm and EF-M 28mm F3.5. Tiffen announces foot operated gas-lift Steadicam Air monopod

Tiffen has joined the monopod market with the new Steadicam Air line, which uses a gas spring and a foot pedal to help photographers quickly and easily adjust the monopod’s height.

The Steadicam Air is a three-section carbon fibre model that features a foot pedal close to the base that, when pressed, assists in lifting the mounted camera to the desired height. The monopod will come in two configurations to hold either 25lb or 15lb, and are suitable for both still and movie photographers.

Of the three sections, one uses a twist lock that allows the top of the monopod to rotate about 360°, while the other two are spring loaded for lifting the camera. A large rubber foot makes it easy to angle monopod without it slipping across the floor.

Sony announces new flagship guide number 60 HVL-F60RM wireless flash

Sony just released a new flagship radio-triggered wireless flash for its full-frame E-Mount cameras. The HVL-F60RM has a built in radio receiver, which means it can be triggered simply via a FA-WRC1M Wireless Radio Commander attached to your E-mount body. It’s a powerful unit with a guide number 60m at 200mm, ISO 100. The flash covers a zoom range of 20-200mm and promises to provide “uniform wide-range zoom coverage without shading with continuous shooting up to 220 flashes.”

The HVL-F60RM does not replace the HVL-F60M flash, which remains in Sony’s lineup for A-mount cameras. The RM version is designed specifically for E-mount (though it will work with A-mount, but without AF Assist), but even for A-mount it has the added benefit of not requiring a separate radio receiver mounted to the flash to be triggered wirelessly.

Several improvements have been made to make the RM version worth your money. First, you don’t need a separate radio receiver attached to your flash. Also, heat resistance has been increased by “as much as” 4x, recycle time has been reduced to 1.7 seconds, and a new External Battery Adaptor (the FA-EBA1 seen in the gallery above) can drop that recycle time even further to just 0.6 seconds.

Additional features include non-directional wireless radio communication from up to 30 meters away, support for up to 15 flash units (assigned to up to 5 groups) when the flash is mounted to a compatible camera and used as a transmitter, an LED Light and AF Illuminator, and a dust and moisture resistant design that “allows flash shooting even in challenging environments.” But there’s one important thing to keep in mind…

No truly usable AF Assist

Sony removed the AF assist beam from the original HVL-F60M that projects a red grid upon your subject to quickly help the AF system achieve focus on subject in total darkness, say, on the dance floor at a wedding. This is a huge omission and sad oversight. We have yet to see if any light is triggered – Sony’s claim that there’s an AF illuminator indicates that at least some AF assist light is triggered. But a blinding LED is not what subjects at events in the dark want thrown in their faces. Instead, Sony should’ve built in a an AF assist grid that’s projected onto nearby subjects for quick AF in low light. Since Sony’s AF pixels on most modern a7/a9 bodies actually use blue color filters, a blue AF assist grid would be ideal, and wouldn’t even bother subjects you’re focusing on significant.

We hope Sony develops a radio transmitter that projects a blue grid for AF-assist in the future, for fast AF in total darkness

Sadly, all Sony E-mount cameras will do with this flash is project a bright LED on your subject for focus, making it difficult to shoot professional events in low light. That’s a huge shame, and our last remaining hope is that Sony develops a radio transmitter to be mounted on-camera that projects this AF grid to help achieve focus quickly.

Sony Launches New Flagship Guide Number 60 Flash

New HVL-F60RM Combines Overwhelming Continuous Flash Performance with Advanced Operability and Wireless Control

SAN DIEGO, Feb. 22, 2018 – Sony Electronics, a worldwide leader in digital imaging and the world’s largest image sensor manufacturer, has today announced a new flagship addition to its digital imaging range with the launch of the HVL-F60RM Flash.

Addressing the needs of the increasing numbers of professional photographers adopting the Sony ? system, the HVL-F60RM offers high-power flash output, reliable continuous performance and advanced control features with integrated radio control options.

The HVL-F60RM has a guide number of 60[i] and covers illumination angles from 20mm[ii] to 200mm[iii] providing uniform wide-range zoom coverage without shading with continuous shooting up to 220[v] flashes. The use of heat resistant materials and the deployment of new advanced algorithms means that heat resistance has been increased by as much as 4x[iv] compared to the previous model, HVL-F60M.

Further improvements have been made to the recycle time which has been reduced to 1.7 seconds[v] or just 0.6 seconds[v] with the new External Battery Adaptor, product code FA-EBA1. A unique benefit of previous Sony flashes, Quick Shift Bounce is included, allowing the photographers to quickly shift from horizontal to vertical orientation, 90 degrees left or right, upward by up to 150 degrees, and downward by 8 degrees for flexible positioning and optimum lighting for a wide range of scenes.

Independent light output level (LEVEL -/+) buttons allow direct control of output or compensation, supporting an efficient workflow. A comprehensive display facilitates adjustments and flash output level confirmation, and also provides intuitive access to flash output settings for paired wireless flashes.

Functions can be freely assigned to the unit’s four-way controller, center button, and control wheel for easy access when required. Furthermore, TTL flash output can be memorized and recalled in manual mode when needed for immediate use or use after minor adjustment. This is another feature that can simplify manual workflow and save time.

The dust and moisture resistant design[vi] of the HVL-F60RM allows flash shooting even in challenging environments and a new optional Rain Guard[vii], product code FA-RG1, provides added protection to the connection between the flash and camera[viii]. Another example of the complete attention to detail that has gone into the design of the HVL-F60RM, is the metal foot of the Multi Interface Shoe™ connection which has been re-designed for increased rigidity and reliability.

A pre-requisite for leading-edge studio set-ups, the wireless radio communication is non-directional so receiver flash units can be positioned anywhere up to approximately 30 meters[iii] away from the camera, even in situations where reflectors or other obstacles would interfere with optical communication. A HVL-F60RM mounted on a compatible camera[ix] functioning as transmitter can be paired with off-camera units functioning as receivers. Multiple flashes are supported with the user able to use up to 15 flash units, assigned in to up to 5 groups[x] or wireless flash control and the use of a pairing system effectively prevents interference from other electronic devices.

Tamron announces 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD for full-frame DSLRs

Tamron is introducing a stabilized 70-210mm F4 tele-zoom for full-frame Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The lens uses an internal zoom mechanism so that the overall length never changes as it’s operated and a ring-type ultrasonic motor. It also offers moisture-resistance, up to 5 stops of stabilization and a close focusing distance of 0.95m/37.4in. The 70-210mm F4 includes 20 optical elements in 14 groups, including 3 low-dispersion elements to reduce chromatic aberration.

The 70-210mm F4 is compatible with Tamron’s 1.4x and 2.0x teleconverters, as well as the company’s Tap-in Console for easy firmware updates. Arriving this April in Canon and Nikon mounts, the 70-210mm F4 will sell for $ 800 – quite a bit cheaper than the offerings from those two manufacturers.

3. Highly reliable internal zoom mechanism
Thanks to an internal zoom mechanism, the physical length of the A034 does not change during zooming, thereby minimizing changes in the center of gravity and providing more stable use and operation. In addition, it’s not necessary for the photographer to move backwards even when shooting space is limited, for instance, when photographing through a wire mesh fence at a zoo. So-called “zoom creep” is impossible because the overall length never extends. Furthermore, the design provides a very robust and sturdy feeling, and the non-rotating front element makes the use of polarizing filters much easier.

The Dual MPU system includes two high-performance MPUs (micro-processor units) dedicated to VC processing and lens system control. 5. Fluorine Coating
The surface of the front element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water-and oil-repellant qualities. The coating also provides an enhanced level of durability, and will sustain its effectiveness for years.

6. Moisture-Resistant Construction
Seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops to provide Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature affords an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions.

7. Compatible with Tamron teleconverter
The new lens is also compatible with the TELECONVERTER 1.4x (Model TC-X14) and TELECONVERTER 2.0x (Model TC-X20), which increase the focal length of the lens to 1.4 times and 2 times the original, respectively. The X-H1 gains the ability DCI 4K capture at 23.97p and 24p, in addition to UHD recording at up to 29.9p. It can also record F-Log footage internally for the first time and adds a movie filmstock style ‘Eterna’ Film Simulation mode. More advanced compression allows video capture at up to 200 Mbps: double that of the X-T2.

Movie shooting is also aided by a predominantly touchscreen-operated ‘Movie Silent Shooting’ mode, which deactivates the camera’s dedicated control dials.

The X-H1 borrows styling cues from the medium-format GFX 50S, including a top-panel status LCD and sloping viewfinder prism. It shares the X-T2’s top burst rate of 14 fps with electronic shutter or 8 fps with mechanical shutter, boosted to 11 fps with optional grip.

Like the X-T2, adding a battery grip extends 4K video shooting from 15 minutes to 29 minutes, 59 seconds. It also adds a headphone socket.

Valhalla, N.Y., February 15, 2018 – As a leader in advanced digital camera technology and outstanding image quality, FUJIFILM North America Corporation is excited to announce the new FUJIFILM X-H1, featuring a 24.3 megapixel APS-C sized X-Trans CMOS III sensor and X-Processor Pro image processing engine for outstanding image quality. The new X-H1 is the highest performance camera in the X Series line of mirrorless cameras, and the first to feature in-body image stabilization (IBIS), a new Flicker Reduction mode that allows for stable exposure under fluorescent and mercury lighting, DCI 4K and other impressive video capabilities.

The X-H1 boasts a newly designed, robust and durable body, and a range of features that support shooting in various situations by professional and experienced amateur photographers, and videographers. When used in combination with FUJINON lenses and Fujifilm’s signature color reproduction technology, the X-H1 produces outstanding image quality and video reproduction.

New 5.5 Stops In-Body Image Stabilization
The new X-H1 is the first X Series camera to feature in-body image stabilization, harnessing three axial accelerometers, three axial Gyro sensors, and a specially-developed dual-processor to achieve approximately 10,000 calculations per second. When combined with compensating mechanisms, the X-H1 produces uncompromised image quality and precision. 5-axis image stabilization is possible with all XF and XC lenses, with certain lenses capable of up to a maximum of 5.5 stops. In addition, a new spring mechanism has been added to reduce micro-vibrations caused by operation of the mechanical shutter. Photographers may also choose to use the electronic front curtain shutter or the electronic shutter, virtually eliminating the effect of vibrations to maximize the benefits of image stabilization.

Robust, Weather-Resistant Body Design and Easy Operability for a Wide Range of Shooting Environments
In addition to its dust and water-resistant properties and ability to operate in temperatures as low as 14°F \ -10°C, the X-H1 also features 25% thicker magnesium alloy than the X-T2. The camera also features a high quality, scratch-resistant coating and a compact, lightweight body that maintains high precision and strong resistance to impact shock torsion and other sources of deformation.

The new X-H1 features a high-magnification and high-precision electronic viewfinder with a magnification ratio of 0.75 times and 3.69 million dot resolution, leading the class for APS-C mirrorless cameras. The viewfinder display is extraordinarily smooth, with a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds and a frame rate of 100 frames per second, allowing the user to instantly confirm the movement of the subject and position the focus with great precision. The X-H1 also features a 3-direction tilt, 3-inch, 1.04 million dot electrostatic touch-panel LCD, which can be intuitively set to the desired angle. In addition, the 1.28 inch sub-LCD on the top of the camera, which emulates the design of the mirrorless medium format GFX 50S, allows for instant confirmation of shooting information.

The X-H1 incorporates additional improvements based on feedback from professional photographers, including a large grip design, leaf-spring switch for the shutter-release button, near-silent shutter sound, a new focus level, and a new AF-ON button and enlargements of buttons on the rear of the camera.

Comprehensive Range of Video Features Support Movie Production
The X-H1 is the first camera in the X Series to include ETERNA, a new film simulation mode that is ideal for shooting movies. This mode simulates cinematic film, creating understated colors and rich shadow tones, greatly enhancing creative freedom during post-processing. The X-H1 boasts many functional and performance improvements to video image quality, including the 1080/120P high-speed video mode (1/2, 1/4 and 1/5 speed slow motion) for recording spectacular slow-motion footage; F-log SD card recording which aids smooth workflow; a DCI 4K shooting mode (4096×2160); a 400% dynamic range setting (approximately 12 stops); 200 Mbps high bit rate recording; a high-sound quality internal microphone (24 bit/48 kHz); and verbal time codes.

First Flicker Reduction Mode and Improved Autofocus Algorithms
The X-H1 features a flicker reduction mode, allowing for stable exposure during burst shots even under fluorescent and mercury lighting. In addition, improvements to the autofocus (AF) algorithm have achieved a number of performance enhancements. Low-light limit for phase detection AF has been improved by approximately 1.5 stops—from 0.5EV to -1.0EV—raising the precision and speed of AF in low-light environments. The minimum aperture has been expanded from F8 to F11, and major improvements have been made to the AF-C performance while operating in zoom, making the X-H1 ideal for shooting rapidly moving subjects.

Vertical Power Booster Grip VPB-XH1
The Vertical Power Booster Grip (VPB-XH1) is a weather-resistant grip capable of operating at temperatures as low as 14°F/-10°C that fits two additional batteries to increase maximum number of shots to 900 (in normal mode) and increases the maximum period for shooting movies in 4K to about 30 minutes.
The Vertical Power Booster Grip features a shutter release button, focus lever, AE-L button, AF-ON button, command dial, Q button, and Fn button, providing the same ease of operation when using the camera in vertical or horizontal positions. The grip is equipped with a headphone socket to allow monitoring sound while recording, and includes recharging capability.

Wide Eyecup EC-XH W
The Wide Eyecup EC-XH W covers a broad area around the eye, greatly reducing light interference to enhance concentration during long shoots. The eyecup can be rotated in 90° increments, making it adaptable for either eye and for shooting either vertically or horizontally.

Sigma announces full-frame 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art lens

Sigma has announced a new 14-24mm F2.8 HSM Art lens for full-frame Canon, Nikon and Sigma DSLRs. This ultra-wide zoom has three FLD and three SLD glass elements, plus an 80mm ‘high precision molded’ aspherical element. The lens is sealed against dust and moisture and has a nine-blade aperture, minimum focus distance of 26cm (10″) and a weight of around 1.2 kg (2.5 lb).

While the 14-24 comes with a petal-shaped hood, Sigma will offer a ‘front mount conversion service’ that will replace it with a circular hood, which is preferable when capturing content intended for VR use.

Living up to its Art designation, the 14-24mm has been designed with 50MP sensors in mind. It claims to minimize distortion to 1% or lower when focused to infinity, and the Canon mount version of the lens works with Canon’s in-camera lens aberration correction. Each 14-24mm F2.8 comes from Sigma’s Aizu, Japan factory.

Converting the petal-type hood of the 14-24mm F2.8 DG HSM Art to an exclusive round component allows for the lens to be used in various VR scenarios without the risk of interfering with other lenses in the VR rig or undesired shadows in the content.
