Adobe announces Project Rush, a cross-device video editing application

Adobe has announced development of Project Rush, a cross-device video editing application that consolidates the entire video creation workflow, from shooting to social media sharing. According to Adobe, Rush is intended to provide a more streamlined and intuitive user experience for creating videos, as well as to provide a powerful video solution for mobile users.

In contrast to traditional video creation workflows, which often require switching between specialized programs, Rush aims to put the entire workflow into one, integrated application. It supports shooting, editing, audio optimization, motion graphics, and video sharing, and provides a simplified interface for editing, color correction, audio, and titling.

Adobe says the tools available in Rush are based on the same underlying technology as some of its pro apps, including color correction technology from Premiere Pro and audio technology from Audition. Integration with Adobe Stock will provide access to free motion graphics templates which can be customized by users.

Project Rush will work across mobile and desktop platforms, and will include the same feature set in both versions. Projects will synchronize between devices using Adobe Creative Cloud.

Recognizing that a great deal of video content is now shared through social media, Rush will automatically optimize video for a variety social media platforms, as well as manage publication and scheduling of content to those platforms. Adobe did not specify which platforms will be supported.

Rush will be available in mobile and desktop applications, with both versions supporting the same feature set, meaning users will have the same tools at their disposal no matter which device they’re using. Projects will sync between devices using Adobe Creative Cloud.

Although Project Rush is unlikely to replace pro-level tools for larger productions, it may prove useful to those who don’t need the power of a dedicated non-linear editor, or those who prefer a workflow that doesn’t involve multiple programs.

Adobe did not provide a release date or pricing for Project Rush, but since it’s designed to sync across Creative Cloud it’s likely to require a Creative Cloud subscription to fully utilize its features. If you want to try Rush for yourself, you can apply to join the public beta here.

Samyang officially announces 24mm F2.8 AF lens, available in July for $400

Just a week after we came across leaked images of the lens, Samyang has unveiled its latest Sony autofocus lens, the AF 24mm F2.8 FE.

Samyang calls the lens ‘tiny but wide’—and rightly so. This lens weighs just 93g and measures 37mm from front to back without the hood or rear lens cap. The FE mount means it works with full-frame Sony cameras, including but not limited to the A9 and A7 IIII.

The optical design of the lens is made up of 7 elements in 7 groups. Three of the optical elements are aspherical lenses and two are high-refractive lenses. The lens also features ‘ultra multi coating’, which helps minimize chromatic aberration and undesired light dispersion.

As the leaked images suggested, the lens features a minimum focusing distance of just 0.24m/0.79ft and has a rubberized focus ring for when you want to take things manual.

The Samyang AF 24mm F2.8, which retails under the brand name Rokinon in the United States, will be available in July for $ 400.

Sony announces Cyber-shot RX100 VI with 24-200mm zoom

Sony has announced the Cyber-shot RX100 VI, a 1″-type compact camera with a 20.1-megapixel Exmor RS stacked CMOS sensor, 24-200mm equivalent F2.8-4.5 zoom lens, 315 phase detection points covering approximately 65% of the sensor, and the ability to shoot at 24 fps with autofocus.

The RX100 VI becomes the first in the Cyber-shot RX100-series to gain a touchscreen, allowing both touch shutter and touch focus. The screen can tilt up to 180 degree upwards and 90 degree downwards, extending shooting flexibility. The new camera is essentially the same size as its predecessor the RX100 V, but its depth has been increased slightly, by 1.8mm.

Sony says that the RX100 VI contains processing and experience developed in the creation of the a9 sports camera. It includes the latest Bionz X processor with front-end LSI, as used in the most recent Alpha cameras. This helps give what the company says is the world’s fastest AF (measured at 0.03 seconds) and with twice the EyeAF tracking performance of the Mark V.

The RX100 VI’s Hybrid AF system includes 315 phase detection points, covering approximately 65% of the sensor for ‘high-density tracking’.

The RX100 VI’s 24-200mm lens comprises 15 elements in 12 groups, featuring two ED (extra-low dispersion) aspherical glass elements and eight aspherical lens elements including four AA (advanced aspherical) lenses. Sony describes the pocketable camera as having “two lenses worth of interchangeable lens”, incorporating the range of a 24-70mm lens and a 70-200mm in one “do anything” camera. Meanwhile, it offers a claimed 4EV of image stabilization. Unlike its predecessor, there is no ND filter for video shooters.

The RX100 VI’s XGA OLED pop-up EVF is similar to previous models in the series, but once popped-up, the finder optics no longer need to be manually extended for use.

On the video front, the RX100 VI is capable of full-width, oversampled 4K video with support for 8-bit HLG (Hybrid Log Gamma) for easy HDR capture. The RX100 VI is also able to record superslow motion video at either 250, 500 or 1000 fps.

The new Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI will ship next month, priced at $ 1200 (£1,150 in the UK).

At the same press conference, Sony also announced the VCT-SGR1 shooting grip, designed for the RX0 and RX100-series cameras. The VCT-SGR1 includes camera controls, an adjustable head and built-in tripod. It will be available in September for around $ 100.

The innovative new RX100 VI camera is the first of all the RX100 models to include a high magnification zoom lens, as it packs in an impressive ZEISS® Vario-Sonnar T* 24-200mm F2.8 – F4.5 lens yet doesn’t sacrifice the pocket-size portability, fast responsiveness and high image quality that has become the hallmark of Sony’s RX100 lineup. Lightning-Fast AF Performance and Shooting Speeds

The new RX100 VI model features a Fast Hybrid AF system that ultimately allows the camera to lock focus in as little as 0.03 seconds. This innovative AF system combines the respective advantages of 315-point focal-plane phase-detection AF points that cover approximately 65% of the sensor and contrast-detection AF. This high speed focusing complements the versatile 24-200mm range of the lens, ensuring all subjects can be captured with precise detail and clarity.

Additionally, a first for the RX100 series of cameras, the RX100 VI includes Sony’s advanced High-density Tracking AF technology, which concentrates AF points around a subject to improve tracking and focus accuracy. The popular Eye AF technology is also available with approximately 2x the tracking performance of the current RX100 series model[ix]. Further, the camera has LCD touch focusing and touchpad focus point control for users that would like to drag their fingers to ideal focus points of their choice.

An ideal complement to the AF system, the RX100 VI offers continuous high-speed shooting at up to 24 fps with full AF/AE tracking, with an impressive buffer limit of up to 233 images. The display lag of the EVF has been substantially reduced compared to prior models, allowing shooters to capture the decisive moment with ultimate confidence. Also, for convenience during image playback, continuously shot images can be displayed in groups instead of individual shots.

The RX100 VI also has a high speed Anti-Distortion Shutter (maximum shutter speed of up to 1/32000 second) that reduces the “rolling shutter” effect commonly experienced with fast moving subjects, and can shoot completely silently in all modes, including continuous high speed shooting, when electronic shutter is engaged. A mechanical shutter mode is also available as well if required by the user.

Advanced Movie Capabilities Including 4K HDR

The pocket-friendly RX100 VI is packed with a variety of video capabilities that will satisfy even the most demanding video enthusiasts.

With Fast Hybrid AF, the focal-plane phase-detection AF points ensures accurate focusing and tracking performance, even for the severe focusing requirements of 4K movie shooting. AF drive speed and AF tracking sensitivity can also be adjusted via the menu system, giving shooters plenty of flexibility based on their focusing preferences.

In 4K mode, the new RX100 VI utilizes full pixel readout without pixel binning to ensure that all the finer details of 4K video are captured with minimal moire and ‘jaggies’.

For the first time in a Cyber-shot camera, the RX100 VI features 4K HDR compatibility thanks to its new HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma) picture profile that offers an instant HDR workflow solution. Additional professional caliber video features include S-Log3/S-Gamut3, 120p Full HD mode, Picture Profile, proxy recording and more. The RX100 VI is also able to record super slow motion video at either 240fps, 480 fps or 960 fps.

Premium Design, Control and Convenience

The new RX100 VI is equipped with a high-contrast 2.35 million dot XGA OLED Tru-Finder™ with ZEISS®T* Coating, ensuring true-to-life image preview and playback functionality. The EVFitselfretracts in and out of the camera body based on user preference, and can be activated instantly by asingle One-push Access button.

A first for Sony’s RX series, RX100 VI has a touch shutter that can be activated by tapping the back LCD screen, a zoom lever with customizable zoom speeds and an LCD that can be rotated 180 degrees upward or 90 degrees downward for a variety of shooting angles for the creator. There is also aMonitor Auto OFF function that boosts max number of still images by up to 30%, and the camera is also Wi-Fi®, NFC™ and Bluetooth® compatible.

Pricing and Availability

The new Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VI compact camera will ship next month for about $ 1,200 US and $ 1,600 CA.

DJI announces price and delivery date for Ronin-S gimbal

Chinese drone manufacturer DJI has announced that the Ronin-S, its first single-handed stabilizer, will be available from late this month at a cost of $ 699. The company says it is taking pre-orders now via its own store and at authorized resellers around the world.

The Ronin-S is designed to support cameras as large as the Canon EOS 5D IV and it will be able to carry up to 8lbs of camera and lens. It comes with a number of innovations including the ability to compensate for trombone zooms, a Push Mode that lets users adjust the pan, tilt and roll balances while the gimbal is still on, and a battery that DJI claims will last for up to 12 hours of shooting.

Despite early appearances, when released the Ronin-S will be fitted with a standard Manfrotto style quick release plate, and the whole rig will be controllable via the DJI Ronin app on a smartphone or with the optional Focus Command Center.

Leica announces SF 60 Flash Unit and SF C1 Remote Control Unit for M and SL cameras

Leica has announced a new flash and remote control flash unit for its Q, SL/CL and M-series digital cameras. The Leica SF 60 flash offers TTL metering, and high-speed sync up to 1/8000sec. The SF 60 has a guide number of 60 at ISO 100, and also features tilt and zoom, with a built-in diffuser and reflector card.

The Leica SF C1 remote control unit enables wireless control of SF 60 flash units across up to seven channels, in three groups. The SF C1 incorporates a Micro SD card slot for future firmware updates.

The SF 60 flash and SF C1 controller will be available later this month, for $ 595 and $ 350 respectively.

The flash units can be organized in up to seven channels, each with three groups, and controlled either together or separately with the same or different settings. Photographers can use all functions of all the flash units, just as if they were mounted on the camera. This opens up countless options for professional lighting set-ups with system flash units.

As is the case with the Leica SF 60 flash unit, all settings can be viewed and easily changed on the clearly laid-out color LCD panel of the Leica SF C1 remote control unit. Alongside reserves sufficient for around 3,000 exposures from its two AAA cells, the future-proof SF C1 remote control unit also features a microSD card slot that allows the latest firmware updates to be uploaded to keep the unit at the cutting edge of technology.

Both units will be available worldwide in Leica Stores, Boutiques and Dealers later this month. The SF 60 Flash will retail for $ 595 and the SF C1 Remote Control will retail for $ 350.

Sigma announces price and ship date of 105mm F1.4 ‘bokeh master’ Art lens

Sigma’s special ‘bokeh master’ 105mm F1.4 DG HSM Art lens made quite a splash when it was first announced back in February, and now Sigma is finally revealing when it will ship and how much it will cost. If you’re in the market for this behemoth of a lens—seriously, we got a hands on at CP+… it’s huge—for either Nikon, Canon, or Sigma mounts, you’ll have to pony up $ 1,600 USD and wait until “late June” to get it.

Skylum announces creation of ‘Skylum AI’ artificial intelligence lab

Skylum Software, formerly known as MacPhun and the developers of the Luminar photo editing application, today announced the creation of a research and development division dedicated to artificial intelligence in imaging. The division is called the Skylum AI Lab, and it is a collaboration between Skylum and its sister company, Photolemur, makers of an AI-powered image editor.

The team at Skylum AI Lab, which will be headed by former Let’s Enchance CEO Alex Savsunenko, is already working on a number of new AI solutions. These include artificial intelligence- and machine learning-powered image upscaling, tagging and segmentation, as well as automated image enhancement systems.

As Skylum CEO Alex Tsepko explains:

By using AI-based technologies in our products, our customers save time vs. manual editing, and can often get better results. Our neural networks are being trained on millions of images taken by cameras from Fujifilm, Sony, Olympus, Nikon, Canon and many others, which means outstanding results for all photographers, regardless of what style they shoot and what gear they are using.

There is clearly a lot of buzz around artificial intelligence in imaging lately, and the possibilities do seem endless. It’s still early days, but with most major smartphone manufacturers implementing AI-powered functions in their smartphone cameras, it only makes sense to push the technology on the desktop and other platforms as well.

Currently, the Skylum AI Lab is testing over a dozen of new solutions, including:

  • Image upscaling:uses deep convolutional neural networks to improve low-resolution images and scale them up for superior viewing and printing.
  • Tagging: generates tags that describe the image and its objects based on image recognition.
  • Segmentation: smart recognition of image areas that can be automatically enhanced using different filters and corrections based on the type of object.
  • Automatic enhancement: applies smart image corrections to photos based on a variety of issues

To further reinforce its AI prowess, Skylum has also joined forces with Photolemur, creator of the world’s first fully automatic photo enhancement solution. Photolemur app has been sold for several years, with hundreds of thousands of customers worldwide. It enhances images utilizing artificial intelligence without the need to use any manual controls. Development will continue on Photolemur, with the next evolution of the app likely to be a cloud solution that helps high-volume users enhance images as batch process.

Meike announces full frame 85mm F1.8, its first autofocus lens

Chinese accessories brand Meike has announced it will introduce an autofocus 85mm F1.8 lens for Canon and Nikon full-frame DSLRs. In addition to adding another (very likely) affordable third party option to the mix, this will be the company’s first AF lens.

Details are a little thin on the ground, but early marketing materials suggest it will be a lightweight and compact lens with an all-metal body construction. The optical formula will use nine elements in six groups, and all elements will be multi-coated on both sides. Close focus will begin at 0.85m with a maximum magnification of 1:1.8. The lens will be 79.5mm long and will accept a 67mm filter.

SLR Magic announces new MicroPrime CINE lenses for Sony E-Mount

Lens maker SLR Magic is exhibiting a new lineup of cinema lenses at NAB 2018 this year. The new MicroPrime CINE lenses are designed for the Sony E-Mount, and there are five of them in all. The first four—a 25mm T1.5, 35mm T1.3, 50mm T1.2, and 75mm T1.5—will all be released in May, and a fifth 18mm T2.9 will be ready “by Q3 2018.”

According to SLR Magic, the MicroPrime lenses are designed with an image circle large enough to cover full-frame sensors, a similar weight distribution across the lineup for easy lens swapping when using a gimbal, and an internal focusing mechanism. The company also says the focus gears were designed with “a throw slightly longer than photographic lenses but still manageable when a motorized follow focus is not used.”

The image below shows a basic set of specs for all five of the MicroPrime CINE lenses, although there is one mistake in the table: the lineup features an 82mm filter thread across all five lenses, not 77mm as the image below shows.

Hong Kong, China (April 9th, 2018) – SLR Magic will present a new family of CINE lenses, MicroPrime series, to the public in the upcoming NAB Show 2018 in Las Vegas at the SLR Magic booth (Upper Central Hall, C-2663). The SLR Magic MicroPrime CINE 25mm T1.5, 35mm T1.3, 50mm T1.2, and 75mm T1.5 are the first lenses of the family.

The SLR Magic MicroPrime CINE lenses are designed to be compact and robust for use in a professional setting. The MicroPrime CINE lenses have a large image circle that covers up to full frame. Witness markings on the lenses are all calibrated for the accuracy professionals need in the field. Each lens is balanced, with a similar weight distribution so that recalibration is not required upon switching lenses when using a 3-axis gimbal. Lens gears are built-in with a throw slightly longer than photographic lenses but still manageable when a motorized follow focus is not used. Each lens features an internal focusing mechanism, and comes with a standard 85mm diameter suitable for matte box use. In the situation where a smaller setup is required, each lenses also comes with a 82mm filter thread for use with 82mm Fixed ND filters.

Blackmagic Design announces Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Way back in 2013, Blackmagic Design introduced the Pocket Cinema Camera, a compact camera with a Super 16 sensor that promised cinema recording quality in a body about the size of a Sony a6500. While it delivered high quality footage, many users acknowledged that it felt like a version 1 product, including frustrating issues like fussy behavior, short battery life, and inelegant ergonomics and controls.

At NAB in Las Vegas, Blackmagic finally announced the sequel many were waiting for, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Video shooters will be happy to know that it’s a significant upgrade at a very aggressive price point.

The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is built around a Micro Four Thirds sensor with dual native ISO and a native DCI 4K (4096×2160) resolution. Although we don’t have any technical information on the sensor, this sounds suspiciously similar to the one used in Panasonic’s GH5S. Blackmagic claims the sensor can capture 13 stops of dynamic range.

Blackmagic finally announced the sequel many were waiting for, the Pocket Cinema Camera 4K. Video shooters will be happy to know that it’s a significant upgrade at a very aggressive price point.

The camera will be able to record DCI 4K at 60 fps and windowed HD (a native 1080 crop) at up to 120 fps in either 10-bit ProRes or 12-bit Raw formats. Various internal recording media are supported including standard SD cards, UHS-II cards, and CFast 2.0 cards.

What’s potentially more interesting, however, is the option to record externally using the camera’s USB-C port. Blackmagic claims it’s the first camera that will let users connect media, like an SSD, directly to the camera’s USB-C port for direct external recording. This means it should be possible to go directly from shooting to working on your computer without transferring data from cards. It seems like a brilliant, if not obvious, use for the USB port.

In addition to the USB-C port, there’s also a full sized HDMI port that can output clean 10-bit video, a mini XLR input with 48v phantom power for audio, 3.5mm audio input, and a headphone jack. Power comes from a standard Canon LP-E6 type battery, and there’s a locking DC power connector that protects the camera from being accidentally unplugged.

The camera’s body is made from a carbon fiber polycarbonate composite to keep it both sturdy and light. It has a substantial grip and a top button layout similar to what’s found on many mirrorless cameras, which should improve handling over the original.

Blackmagic claims it’s the first camera that will let users connect media, like an SSD, directly to the camera’s USB-C port for direct external recording.

On the rear is a large 5″ touchscreen for composition, viewing exposure parameters, and useful tools such as a histogram and focus peaking. Notably, Blackmagic doesn’t mention support for waveform displays or vectorscopes.

The camera can capture still photos, though Blackmagic hardly mentions it. Since this camera is clearly aimed at videographers we don’t expect a deep feature set for regular photography.

What may be most impressive about the camera is the price. The Pocket Cinema Camera 4K will sell for $ 1295 and be available later this year. We definitely look forward to getting our hands on this camera and testing it out.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features a full size 4/3 HDR sensor with native 4096 x 2160 resolution and 13 stops of dynamic range for true digital film quality. The full size of the 4/3 sensor is designed to perfectly match MFT lenses so the crop factor is greatly reduced, giving customers a wider field of view. It also features dual native ISO with up to 25600 ISO for incredible low light performance.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is packed with features such as a MFT lens mount, large 5 inch touchscreen monitor, 10-bit ProRes and 12-bit RAW recording, 3D LUTs, 4 built in microphones, mini XLR audio input with phantom power, Bluetooth wireless camera control, HDMI on set monitoring output and more. The latest Blackmagic Design color science lets customers shoot images that are far better than DSLR cameras and even better than professional digital film cameras costing tens of thousands more.

Designed using a space age carbon fiber polycarbonate composite, the body of the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K is extremely strong and light. The carbon composite material consists of a high strength polymer that’s reinforced with carbon fibers. This gives the camera body incredible strength and rigidity to help protect it from accidental knocks and drops which can often result in damage. The handheld design features a multi function grip which has logically placed buttons and dials that allow super fast access to essential shooting functions such as recording start/stop, still photos, ISO, shutter, aperture, white balance, power and more.

Fourth generation Blackmagic Design color science lets customers shoot HDR images in film, video and new extended video modes. The new extended mode combines the latitude of digital film with an optimized video file. This gives customers working on fast turnaround projects an ideal solution for shooting great looking images that don’t need a lot of color correction or post production work.

Images can be recorded onto standard SD cards, faster UHS-II cards or CFast 2.0 cards in either ProRes or RAW formats. The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K can record 4K images at up to 60 frames per second and windowed HD at up to 120 frames per second. It’s also the first camera that lets customers record directly onto the same exact external USB-C media drives they use for editing and color correction. That means customers can turn projects around much more quickly because they don’t have to transfer files. All they need to do is unplug the USB-C drive and then connect it to their computer to start editing.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K uses the same MFT (Micro Four Thirds) lens mount as the original Pocket Cinema Camera so customers can use the investment in lenses they already own. The MFT mount is extremely flexible and allows for different lens adapters so customers can also use PL, C, EF and other types of lenses from manufacturers such as Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Leica and even Panavision.

The rear of the camera features a large bright 5 inch touchscreen that makes it easy to frame shots and accurately focus. It also uses the same Blackmagic OS as URSA Mini so customers can use simple tap and swipe gestures to adjust settings, add metadata and view recording status. On screen overlays make it easy to see recording parameters, status, histogram, focus and peaking indicators, and playback controls. In addition, 3D LUTs can be applied for both monitoring and recording.

For audio, the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K features multiple built in microphones with an extremely low noise floor, a mini XLR input with 48 volts of phantom power to connect professional lapel and boom mics, and a 3.5mm stereo audio jack for connecting different types of video camera microphones. The high quality built in audio recording means customers don’t have to carry around a separate recorder.

The Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K also includes a full size HDMI connector which can output HDR video as well as a clean 10-bit video feed with optional on screen overlays. There’s also an innovative high speed USB-C Expansion Port for adding external accessories such as flash drives and an SSD for external recording. The camera uses standard LP-E6 batteries and can be charged via USB-C or the locking DC power connector, which protects the camera from being accidentally unplugged during a shoot.
