Shoot Like Henri Cartier-Bresson: A Quick Guide To Becoming An Amazing Photojournalist

07 Feb

“Most of my pictures are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person, a person caught in a broader landscape that I guess you’d call the human condition.” It’s by Steve McCurry, whom I didn’t know Continue Reading

ZERO wind AutoKAP in Auyuituiq Park, Bafin Island

Aerial Photography is something that many people would love to be able to do but find is out of their budget. One more affordable way to go about it is to try some Kite Aerial Photography (KAP).

Hey batta batta!

The 61 images in this post are all arial shots taken by strapping a camera to a kite to elevate it. It’s not something for the faint of heart as you are putting your camera at risk but the results can be pretty amazing in the right setting.

Getting up high with your camera attached to a kite gives a fresh perspective on a scene and can highlight patterns, textures and shadows that might not be evident to anyone at ground level.

Don’t just duct tape your camera to your kite though – most serious kite aerial photographers use purpose built rigging to get their shots like these:

There’s a heap of information on KAP online – Google it and you’ll be sure to find some great advice. Now back to some great Kite Aerial Photography images – Enjoy!

Branch Out: 20 Organic Tree Houses Are Naturally Amazing

31 Dec

[ By Steph in Architecture & Houses & Residential. ]

Treehouses main

Woven huts made of living saplings, artistic hotel rooms resembling bird nests and cabins dangling from 300-year-old spruces are among the stunning organic structures built from, in, and onto entire trees. Tree houses like these 20 incredible structures indulge our childlike impulses to climb and view the world from a bird’s point of view, and blur the lines between nature and human habitation.

5 Bent-Wood Tree Houses by Romero Architecture

Treehouses Romero 1

Treehouses Romero 2

Treehouses Romero 3

Romero Studios creates incredible organic tree-lofted structures including huts, homes, porches and platforms, some with a very rustic look and others more finished. Natural branches are often used, some still covered in lichen, enabling these magical forest getaways to blend into their environments.

Living Trees Shaped into Buildings by Patrick Dougherty

Treehouses Dougherty 1

Treehouses Dougherty 2

Patrick Dougherty gently shapes flexible saplings to form swirling structures that look as if they could have been painted with an artist’s brush. The saplings grow into each other as directed by Dougherty’s hand, making them stronger than they would have been had he simply woven thin branches together to form the huts. Some of Dougherty’s structures look like complex tree trunks, as if they might have been formed by nature, while others resemble cathedrals.

Trunk House: A Tree House on the Ground

Treehouses Trunk House
This may not be a tree house in the traditional sense, hanging high above the ground, but it’s a tree house all the same. Paul Morgan Architects created the distinctive Trunk House with wood found on the owners’ Australian property that was naturally split into Y-shapes. Integrating these into the exterior of the house makes it look as if it were built from standing trees.

Alnwick Gardens

Treehouses Alnwick

In the gardens adjacent to the Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, England, one of the world’s largest and most complex tree houses can be found. The treehouse complex measures 6,000 square feet and includes a restaurant, an education room and rope bridges. The treehouse was made from sustainably-sourced Canadian cedar, Scandinavian redwood and English and Scots pine.

Naturally Curved Tree Homes by Roald Gunderson

Treehouses Whole Tree Building 1

Treehouses Whole Tree Building 2

Roald Gunderson builds beautiful eco-friendly homes using entire trees rather than milled wood, the curves of the branches giving each structure an entirely unique shape. Not only does this technique give the homes rustic charm, save money and put less strain on the environment than more conventional home-building methods, it also results in stronger houses. Gunderson chooses weak or invasive trees that wouldn’t normally be logged, and the natural curving structure of each whole branch is more structurally stable than that off milled timber.

Temple of the Blue Moon

Treehouses Temple of the Blue Moon

Among the lodgings offered at Treehouse Point in Issaquah, Washington, Temple of the Blue Moon looks like a rustic cabin that has been elevated dozens of feet up a 300-year-old, 160-foot-tall Sitka Spruce tree. In addition to a rope bridge and a balcony, this treetop getaway features skylights and built-in cedar beds.

Nendo’s Tree House Apartment for Birds

Treehouses Nendo

This modern white tree house by Nendo doubles as a ‘bird apartment’, offering 78 individual nest boxes in the trees at Japan’s Ando Momofuku Center. The coolest thing about this particular tree house is the fact that humans can creep up the ladder and into the main part of the structure to get a look at each nest through peepholes.

6 High-Flying Rooms at AirHotel

Treehouses Airhotel 1

Treehouses Airhotel 2

Treehouses Airhotel 3

At the Time Circus Airhotel in Belgium, you can choose from 6 different types of highly unconventional and fun high-flying hotel rooms. Made from recycled materials, Airhotel’s artistic tree houses each have their own theme, ranging from ‘love nests’ made of flowering branches to a sphere that looks like a lantern, but folds out into a flower shape. ‘El Ambassador’, the VIP room, looks like part of a steampunk airship with its wooden cocoon-like shape and glass skylights.

High & Dry: 8 Amazing Abandoned Aquariums

16 Dec

[ By Steve in Abandoned Places & Architecture. ]

Recreating the sea on land is no easy task, especially when a stable and viable marine ecosystem is the crux of the plan. When things go wrong, however, the life leaves and what’s left looks especially out of place – a fish out of water as it were. These 8 amazing abandoned aquariums illustrate what happens when the artificial environments of yesterday go apocalypse now.

Coral World – Nassau, The Bahamas

(image via: Williams Family)

Coral World Bahamas is a combination aquarium and beach resort that opened in 1987. Its signature lighthouse-like tower observatory was built on an artificial island and is linked to the mainland of Nassau via an elevated causeway.

(images via: Worldnews.com and Ambertq)

Coral World suffered severe damage from Hurricane Floyd in 1999 and although the UFO-esque tower remains as an easily recognizable landmark, the cessation of any maintenance by owners Coral World International is allowing rust and weathering to inexorably take their toll.

Sea-Arama Marineworld – Galveston, Texas, USA

(images via: SixFlagsHouston Forums and Artificial Owl)

Sea-Arama Marineworld opened in 1965 and was Galveston’s most popular attraction for decades. Times change, however, and when Sea World Park opened in San Antonio the more modern facility began scooping too many of Sea-Arama Marineworld‘s potential visitors for the aging facility to remain profitable – it closed its doors for good in 1990.

(images via: Abandoned But Not Forgotten (ABNF))

Sea-Arama Marineworld was completely demolished in 2006 but thanks to the efforts of photojournalists both amateur and professional, we can appreciate the sad beauty of the former 25-acre complex as it silently molders away.

Lal Bagh Botanical Garden – Bangalore, India

(image via: Mohammed Absar)

Captured in the midst of ongoing decay in mid-June of 2010, the abandoned aquarium at the otherwise open-for-business Lal Bagh Botanical Garden in Bangalore, southern India puts on a brave front against the irresistible force of passing time. Though the garden as a whole dates back to 1760, the aquarium building is of much more recent vintage.

Saikaibashi Public Aquarium – Sasebo, Japan

(images via: Tee-Photo and Abandoned Kansai)

The Saikaibashi Public Aquarium opened sometime in the mid-1960s and operated for about 30 years. Its remains can be found in the city of Sasebo, near Nagasaki in western Japan.

(images via: Forbidden Kyushu)

The two-story aquarium was anything but grandiose – passage between the two levels was via stairs, not an elevator or escalator – but it did boast a four times daily dolphin show.

(image via: Forbidden Kyushu)

The aquarium’s decaying remnants are surprisingly free from graffiti though most of the building’s windows have been broken. Considering the area’s humid summer climate and frequent summer storms it’s probable the Saikaibashi Public Aquarium will be taken over by mold and mildew unless a demolition crew doesn’t demolish it first.

Old Cleveland Aquarium – Cleveland, Ohio, USA

(images via: Realbruts! and What My Eyes Have Seen)

Overshadowed by the Greater Cleveland Aquarium that’s housed in a fully renovated abandoned power plant, the old Cleveland Aquarium was a modest structure free of bells and whistles.

(images via: Kingtycoon and Mobius Faith Imaging)

The elderly brickwork building was used for police K9 training for a time after the aquarium closed but both cops and dogs have hightailed it outta there as well.

Dolphin Island – Okinawa, Japan

(images via: 28DaysLater)

Dolphin Island, or “Hiikuu Island” in half-Japanese is located a stone’s throw off the coast of Okinawa. When the surprisingly large restaurant/aquarium was built several decades ago a causeway was constructed to provide easy access. Nowadays any intrepid explorers must wade across at low tide – stay too long and you’ll be spending the night alone with only spiders and fire ants for company!

(image via: Gakuran)

The remnants of Dolphin Island‘s small aquarium can be found within the forlorn building; all of the tanks (and their occupants) are long gone however.

It’s not known why the place’s owners saw the need for an above-ground aquarium when the surrounding waters are a scuba-diver’s paradise but maybe that’s one reason the island is deserted today.

Abandoned Water Park – Dead Sea, Israel/Jordan

(image via: Foto8)

The frequency of tourism to Israel’s border regions may be described as boom or bust… the former typically leading to the latter. It’s not certain why the colorful water park complex above gave up the ghost in 2010 but lets just say the life preserver at the bottom of the pool had no takers.

Atlantis Marine Park – Two Rocks, Australia

(images via: Tumblr, Crafted By Ben and Escobar.ID.AU)

Japan’s Tokyu Corporation had high hopes when they opened the Atlantis Marine Park in December of 1981. Located in the small town of Two Rocks a few miles north of Perth, the park encompassed 14 hectares (more than half of them artificial lakes) and boasted an Oceanarium, a Seal Pool, a Dolphin Pool and a Children’s Adventure Park. Six dolphins were caught nearby and three more were born at the park in 1988.

(image via: Tumblr)

Thought the dolphins liked Atlantis Marine Park enough to start settling down and producing offspring, the Australian government had a few issues – mainly, the park’s dolphin tank was now too small and would have to be expanded or a larger one built.

(images via: WAtoday and Tumblr)

Faced with an expensive renovation bill and mindful of declining profits, Tokyu Corporation decided to cut their losses, release their dolphins and close the park. Old King Neptune was/is not amused though appearances may indicate otherwise.

(image via: EnglishRussia)

Several sources state the Russian building above is an abandoned children’s summer camp building, not an abandoned aquarium. You’ve gotta love the design, whatever it is, even in its currently decrepit state. When Great C’thulhu and his minions finally awake and reclaim their old stomping grounds, this is what it’s gonna look like.

Clock Watching: 15 Amazing Movie & TV Time Machines

02 Dec

[ By Steve in Conceptual & Futuristic & Technology. ]

Time travel is a relatively modern concept first popularized by British author H. G. Wells in his pioneering sci-fi classic The Time Machine. Over a century of virtual time exploration has given us a wealth of variations on Wells’ antique Brass Age time machine, showcased in technicolor on TV and theater screens. Here are 15 of the most memorable.

The Time Machine (1960)

(images via: MSN Entertainment and Mark Bourne)

H. G. Wells may be more famed for his classic War Of The Worlds but his 1895 novel “The Time Machine” proved the prescient Englishman was no one trick pony. Wells’ masterpiece has spawned a number of radio, TV and film adaptations but 1960′s theatrical release remains a stunning tour de force half a century later.

(image via: Forces Of Geek)

The time traveler’s handcrafted Victorian-era contraption mixes elements of Santa’s sleigh with steampunk accessories in turned brass, red velvet and faceted crystal. Definitely a keeper and well worth bidding on should it show up on eBay… morlocks optional.

Doctor Who (1963+)

(images via: TARDIS Corset, RTP Films and Starstore.com)

Over five decades, eleven Doctors and one well-worn TARDIS, the iconic BBC science fiction television show has become a cultural institution worthy of inclusion (audio only, pity) in the 2012 London Olympics Opening Ceremonies. As for the TARDIS (an acronym standing for “Time and Relative Dimension in Space”) itself, the show’s hagiography describes this unassuming and quintessentially English time machine as being an obsolete, unreliable museum piece whose “chameleon circuit” froze up during a visit to 1963 London, locking it into the shape of a police call box.

The Time Tunnel (1966)

(images via: MidAtlantic Nostaligia Convention and IANN)

“Two American scientists are lost in the swirling maze of past and future ages, during the first experiments on America’s greatest and most secret project, the Time Tunnel.” So began most of the 30 hour-long episodes of The Time Tunnel, an ambitious TV series helmed by veteran master of disaster Irwin Allen. Starring James Darren, Robert Colbert and Lee Meriwether, the show was a minor hit for ABC-TV in 1966-67 and featured an enormous, pop-art tunnel reaching back into the mists of time. After being picked up for a second season, The Time Tunnel was abruptly cancelled when regime change at ABC saw the network’s programming reshuffled. As for Doug & Tony, they’re still out there, somewhere.

Star Trek: The City On The Edge Of Forever (1967)

(images via: Victory Tastes Yellow, Subspace Communique and Giant Freakin Robot)

First broadcast on April 6th of 1967 to end the first television season of Star Trek, The City On The Edge Of Forever saw the series’ main three characters traveling to 1930′s New York City via the “Guardian of Forever”, a time portal built by a long-lost civilization. While many journeys are possible using the Guardian as a gate, the consequences of doing so should not be taken lightly.

Time After Time (1979)

(images via: Scifi-Movies, Home Theater Forum and Movie Poster Shop)

The 1979 film Time After Time doesn’t just employ time travel as a plot device, it positively revels in it. H. G. Wells (played by Malcolm McDowell) and Jack the Ripper (played by David Warner) play a high-stakes game of hide & go seek in the time stream as both characters attempt to assert control over Wells’ time machine to assure the triumph of good or evil.

The Terminator (1984+)

(images via: MENNO and Terminator Wikia)

The Terminator series of films and TV series’ takes a slightly different tack when conceiving time machines… there’s no actual time-traveling machine, only a base station in the future from which “time bubbles” are created and launched. Only organic matter can complete a Terminator-style time trip, which explains why both Terminators and humans like John Connor’s father arrive naked and weaponless. One surmises H. G. Wells would not approve.

Back To The Future Trilogy (1985, 1989, 1990)

As we approach the 30th anniversary of the first Back To The Future film, it’s somewhat amusing to note the vast differences in the filmmakers’ world of 2015 and the much more pedestrian world of almost 2013. Levitating skateboards, anyone?

Quibbling aside, the enduring star of all three films is Doc Brown’s ultra-modified DeLorean and its mysteriously evocative flux capacitor. Why a DeLorean? “The way I see it,” explains Doc himself, “if you’re gonna build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?” Now THAT’s heavy.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (1986)

There are times when a DeLorean isn’t quite big enough for your purposes, or in the case of 1986′s Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, porpoises – really BIG ones. Replace Doc Brown with Dr. “Bones” McCoy and enlist a captured Klingon Bird of Prey (rechristened the H.M.S. Bounty) to do the time traveling and all’s whale that ends whale.

Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, Bogus Journey (1989, 1991)

Imagine a TARDIS operated by idiots and you’ve got 1989′s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, followed two years later by the equally ridiculous, er, excellent Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey. Their telephone booth-like time machine superficially resembles the TARDIS except for one crucial property: it’s NOT bigger on the inside.

Timecop (1994)

Jean-Claude Van Damme, the “Muscles from Brussels”, has his detractors to be sure but like him or not, most film fans agree that 1994′s Timecop was one of his better efforts. Naturally, time travel was the central theme of the flick and the time machine used – sort of a rocket sled on steroids – was highly unusual to say the least. Bloodstains on the sled run’s backing wall gave new and chilling meaning to “terminal” velocity.

The Simpsons: Time and Punishment (1994)

(images via: WikiNoticia, UGO and Die Blog, Die)

“Time and Punishment” was one of a trio of special episodes that together made up the fifth episode in the Treehouse of Horror series. The story was very loosely modeled on Ray Bradbury’s classic sci-fi short story A Sound of Thunder and we do mean VERY loosely.

In a nutshell, Homer tries to fix a toaster but fails even more spectacularly than usual, inadvertently creating a time machine. The toaster time machine works fine… Homer, not so much. After swatting a mosquito, giving his cold to the dinosaurs and causing other time-changing mayhem in the past, he finally returns to a world much (but not exactly) like the one he originally left.

Galaxy Quest (1999)

Imagine you’re driving down the freeway and suddenly an 18-wheel semi in the opposite lane veers out of control… a horrific head-on collision is mere seconds away! What to do? Well, if your vehicle was equipped with the spaceship NSEA Protector’s top secret Omega-13 device, you’d just activate it, go back in time 13 seconds, and take the off-ramp out of danger. The 1999 cult classic film Galaxy Quest was riddled with similarly improbable (but highly useful) plot devices but when it comes to getting an interplanetary mulligan you just can’t beat the Omega-13: in the words of Tech Sgt. Chen, “it’s a hell of a thing.”

The Time Machine (2002)

(images via: All Movie Photo and Inkscape)

The 2002 re-boot, as it were, of 1960′s The Time Machine was directed by Simon Wells, great-grandson of H. G. Wells and it’s likely great-grandad would be suitably impressed with the result. Modern critics were less charmed, however, though the special effects are a significant upgrade. One scene of note is the final fight between time traveler Alexander Hartdegen (Guy Pearce) and the uber-morlock played by Jeremy Irons – watch it here.

Napoleon Dynamite (2004)

(images via: This Or That and Famous When Dead)

2004′s quirky modern classic Napoleon Dynamite isn’t a time machine movie per se, but it does feature a scene in which one is used… well, attempted to be used. The device is about as low-budget as it gets for time machines, even those bought online that need to have “crystals” inserted before setting the dial for 1982 and flipping the ON switch. Needless to say, the machine doesn’t work but Uncle Rico could have told you that.

Hot Tub Time Machine (2010)

Well we seem to have come full circle in the time machine comfort zone department though it’s doubtful our original 1899 time traveler would feel all that comfortable immersed in a Hot Tub, Time Machine or not, with four other guys. Then again, it’s not every day one trips back to 1986 when Ronald Reagan was president. “Ronald Reagan, the actor?” Yeah Doc, one & the same.

Yep, owning a working time machine must be pretty, pretty cool judging from the fantastic adventures enjoyed by a host of lucky TV and movie characters. Then again, the one place time machines DON’T make appearances is on reality shows… or in reality. As Uncle Rico can attest, it’s caveat emptor all the way when it comes to time machines. Odds are your fondest dream could turn into your worst nightmare.
