Adobe updates PhotoShop CC with content-aware crop, face-aware liquify

Photoshop CC 2015.5 introduces a couple of editing tools that have been showcased recently by Adobe, as well as a new selection and masking workspace. 

Face-aware liquify uses facial recognition to identify facial features, offering slider adjustment tools to change the shape of a nose or a mouth, for instance. Content-aware crop aims to fill in blank canvas space around an image resulting from a horizon adjustment, for example, applying the same logic as the existing content-aware fill tool. In addition to these new retouch tools, users will find a new selection and masking workspace, making it easier to isolate elements of an image with tools like refine edge brush. 

With this update, Adobe claims that Photoshop CC will open documents faster and performs with better overall responsiveness. Specifically mentioned is content aware fill, which Adobe claims will be ‘up to 3X faster with even better results.’

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.6, Lightroom 6.6, and Camera Raw 9.6 now available

Adobe has released Lightroom CC 2015.6, Lightroom 6.6, and Camera Raw 9.6, primarily fixing bugs and adding camera profiles as well as Raw support. Lightroom CC and Camera Raw 9.6 users, however, also get a new feature called Guided Upright that reduces/eliminates keystone effects in buildings, straightens images and fixes horizons.

Guided Upright adds a semi-automated function to an existing feature, using guides drawn by the user to apply perspective corrections. It’s found within a new ‘Transform’ panel, which also houses manual perspective correction sliders. Users manually draw 2 to 4 guide lines on the photo, which the software uses to transform the image via Upright. Those manual perspective correction sliders can be used to ‘fine tune’ the resulting image when necessary. 

Lightroom CC 2015.6 / 6.6 and Camera Raw 9.6 have added support for the following cameras:

  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark II
  • Leica M-D (Typ 262)
  • Nikon COOLPIX B700
  • Panasonic DMC-GX85/GX80/GX7MK2

The software has also added camera matching color profiles for the Pentax K-3 II, K-1, and 645Z cameras. Both versions of Lightroom also received tethered camera support for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II, Canon EOS 80D, and Canon EOS 1300D / Canon Rebel T6.

Content-aware cropping coming soon to Adobe Photoshop CC

Adobe Photoshop CC will soon offer content-aware cropping, the company has announced. The feature, as demonstrated in a video released today, will allow Photoshop users to automatically fill any white space around an adjusted photo with content that matches the original image. The tool can be used to add content (to change the aspect ratio, for example), or to fill in gaps that result from rotating or repositioning the image.

Content-aware cropping has been a frequently requested feature, says Adobe. The company will include the new cropping tool ‘as part of an upcoming major release,’ though it doesn’t specify whether it will be the next major update or a later one.

Adobe announces updates to Creative Cloud video-oriented applications

With Adobe’s upcoming version of Premiere Pro CC, users can start editing video files immediately, even while still importing, and can switch between native and proxy formats as well.

Ahead of next week’s NAB Show in Las Vegas, Adobe has announced new features to its Creative Cloud software applications for video editing, motion graphics, and audio, including Premiere Pro, After Effects, Audition and Media Encoder.

Of particular interest to video editors, Premiere Pro users will now be able to start editing video files immediately, even while ingesting clips. Additionally, editors can now work natively with high resolution video formats up to 8K. New proxy workflows facilitate quick switching between native video and proxy formats while editing, which should be helpful to those working on older machines or laptops.

Premiere Pro also introduces virtual reality (VR) editing capabilities, making it possible to work with imported stitched video, including the ability to show field-of-view so it’s possible to see what the viewer will be seeing in any direction, and tagging of VR files so that VR-capable video players, such as YouTube, will automatically recognize VR footage.

Other noteworthy features enhanced Lumetri Color tools, improved captioning and titling options, and initial support for Apple Metal for improved performance on Apple devices.

The updated applications should be available in ‘early summer.’

Adobe Unveils Breakthroughs in Video and Film Production

Virtual Reality, Character Animation, Sound Innovation Comes To Creative Cloud

SAN JOSE, Calif. — April 13, 2016 — The way consumers access and view content has undergone sweeping changes. Media and entertainment companies, along with creative professionals, are under increasing pressure to find new ways to create, deliver and monetize content. With Adobe’s digital marketing tools TV networks and pay-TV providers can drive viewer acquisition, engagement and monetization as audiences embrace “over the top” (OTT) content via connected devices such as Apple TV, Sony PlayStation, Roku and Microsoft Xbox. At NAB, Adobe will demonstrate the updated tools and new workflows at booth #SL3910, South Hall (lower) in the Las Vegas Convention Center and at over 120 partner booths from April 18-21.

Adobe Creative Cloud video tools are becoming the go-to source for film editors of both award-winning Hollywood and indie films. The most recent example is Deadpool, the 20th Century FOX blockbuster which shattered box office records. The post-production team from Deadpool will discuss their state-of-the-art workflows and why they chose Adobe Premiere Pro CC in a Creative Master Series panel at NAB on April 19 from 4:15–5 p.m. PT. 

Upcoming productions using Premiere Pro CC include Mindhunter, David Fincher’s new series for Netflix, and 6 Below directed by Scott Waugh and starring Josh Hartnett, which is currently shooting in 6K RED and will be edited natively in Premiere Pro.

Creative Cloud video tools are also powering a new generation of content delivered via social channels like YouTube, Facebook and Instagram.

Immerse Yourself In Creativity

In the next release of Creative Cloud –- available in early summer — Premiere Pro CC will add new virtual reality capabilities, including “field of view” mode for spherical stitched media.  In addition, thanks to Adobe Stock integration into CC apps, customers are already experiencing productivity increases of 10 times, when adding stock content into creative projects, including video*. In the upcoming release, Adobe Stock will have enhanced connections with CC apps and new workflows will enable Adobe Bridge and Lightroom users to contribute to the Adobe Stock marketplace directly from within the application.

Other feature highlights coming soon to Creative Cloud include:

  • Edit immediately during ingest allows Premiere Pro CC users to get straight to work, while importing their video and audio files in the background.
  • Powerful proxy workflows in Premiere Pro CC and Adobe Media Encoder CC enable users to easily work with heavy 8K, HDR and HFR media, so editors can switch between native and proxy formats freely – even on lightweight machines.

  • New video and audio preview engine in After Effects CC delivers superior playback of cached frames for a smooth experience. 
  • Easier and more efficient Character Animator includes a simplified puppet creation process that enables users to easily tag puppet layers easily and record multiple takes of a character’s movement. Users can animate puppets to respond to motion and trigger animation accordingly. 
  • New Essential Sound panel in Audition CC enables anyone to mix audio content with professional results. 
  • Quickly find Adobe Stock assets with new filtered search in Creative Cloud Libraries. Licensed assets in your library are now badged for easy identification, videos are displayed with duration and format information, and saved videos are linked to video previews on the Adobe Stock site.

Adobe announces Technology Previews for Lightroom on the Web with subject-identifying Search feature

Adobe has launched Technology Previews for Lightroom on the Web, allowing Lightroom users to test new features before they are officially rolled out. To get things started, Adobe has released a Technology Preview that introduces ‘Search,’ a feature that uses new image analysis technology to identify photos based on subjects. 

According to Adobe, the search function lets users search for any photograph that has been synced online using Lightroom on the Web, Lightroom for mobile, or one of the Lightroom desktop applications. Search terms like ‘food’ or ‘flowers’ will reportedly be indexed whether or not the photos contain any keywords. Users can access the feature by first logging into Lightroom on the Web, then clicking the ‘Lr’ menu in the top left corner and selecting ‘Technology Preview’ from the menu. Search will then index synced photos.

The new search function is only available in English, though Adobe says it will be provided for other languages once the final version is officially rolled out. Before that happens, though, Adobe plans to expand Search’s functionality, adding support for metadata searches and more.

Adobe Camera Raw 9.5 introduces new color scheme

Camera Raw gets a new look with version 9.5, available now. The update introduces a color scheme that brings Adobe’s Raw conversion software in line with Photoshop and Bridge. ACR 9.5 also extends support to a dozen new cameras, including the Nikon D5/D500 and Canon EOS 80D, fixes a handful of bugs and adds support for new lenses like the Sony FE 85mm F1.4 and 24-70mm F2.8 GM. Bugs Fixed in Camera Raw 9.5

  • Fix crash/hang in Camera Raw and DNG Converter on some Mac systems when saving multiple images.
  • Fix corruption issue that would prevent DNG images originally created by Parrot Bebop Drone devices from being opened after metadata updates.
  • Pressing the Option/Alt key while click-dragging on a perimeter handle of a Radial Filter will adjust only that side of the filter. This change in behavior was made to match Lightroom’s behavior. Previously, Option/Alt-clicking on a Radial Filter in Camera Raw would delete that filter.
  • Camera Raw Filter now displays the histogram and RGB color readouts using the assigned color space of the corresponding Photoshop document. Previously, Camera Raw Filter always displayed its histogram and RGB color readouts using the ProPhoto color space.
  • Improve quality of Boundary Warp for some panoramas.
  • Fix bug where EXIF metadata for SIGMA 50mm f/1.4 ART lens on Canon was incorrectly identified as Zeiss Milvus 50mm f/1.4.

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.5 / 6.5 update brings bug fixes, new camera support

Adobe has launched Lightroom CC 2015.5 and Lightroom 6.5, bringing numerous bug fixes alongside new camera support and dozens of new lens profiles. The update fixes a few issues with the Panorama Merge feature, including bugs affecting Boundary Warp, as well as ‘a ton of sync errors’ and a couple missing features.

The new version of Lightroom takes care of dust spots in a smart way – remove spots from the first image, and the rest will be removed automatically as other images are merged. Additionally, bugs have been fixed that affected Boundary Warp, a tool that helps straighten curved edges of stitched panoramas.

Bug fixes unrelated to Panorama Merge include numerous unspecified syncing errors. Adobe also claims that syncing with the Android and iOS Lightroom apps is now faster. Mouse scrolling has been restored in Loupe view, and it has also reinstated scroll bars in the Book module for faster browsing. Finally, slideshows once again display images in high-resolution, whereas before a bug caused them to display at a ‘much lower res than expected.’

Adobe issues fix for Creative Cloud Mac update that could delete files

Last week, Adobe rolled out a Creative Cloud update with a harmful bug that, for some Mac users, deleted files from the system root directory. Once the bug was discovered with the help of backup platform Backblaze, Creative Cloud version 3.5.0.206 was pulled from release and was replaced Sunday with an update that promises to fix the issue.

The bug appears to have deleted the first file in the root directory for users who downloaded the update, whatever that file might have been. Backblaze users noticed problems because alphabetically, the service’s .bzvol folder sits at the top of their root directory. When Creative Cloud deleted the folder, Backblaze alerted the user that something was wrong.

In a blog post on Friday, Adobe acknowledged the issue, saying that ‘the updater may incorrectly remove some files from the system root directory with user writeable permissions.’ Version 3.5.1.209 was released Sunday with a fix for the problem.

Adobe directs users who experienced problems with the Creative Cloud update to contact customer service. The latest update is available now for Mac and Windows.

Finally! Adobe updates Bridge CC for improved performance

Adobe has released a significant update to Bridge CC, its venerable file management program. Where Photoshop and Lightroom have seen multiple incremental updates over the past few years, Bridge has been left somewhat alone. That all changes today with multiple improvements including improved cache management, and an option to import images from external devices including iOS and Android mobile devices.

Sluggish performance, especially when displaying large numbers of thumbnails has been a perennial complaint among photographers who use Bridge. And although it has taken a while, Adobe seems to have listened to those complaints. Thumbnail previews are now generated on-demand rather than all at once, and metadata is loaded first so that filters can be used before all thumbnails have been generated. In another effort to boost performance, Adobe has introduced improvements to its cache management to automatically purge stale items when Bridge is idle.

This Bridge update also re-instates a feature that automatically identifies and stacks images shot in a sequence either for an HDR or panoramic composite.

Bridge Reloaded

Today we are pleased to announce the release of Adobe Bridge CC version 6.2.

Bridge was brought back to be managed by Megan Donahue, Director, Creative Cloud and Arno Gourdol, Sr. Engineering Director, Creative Cloud and their awesome teams.  Arno is no stranger to Bridge since he has worked on several past releases.  Our team has been working on several new initiatives that enhance user experience around asset management used by Creative Cloud customers. Most recent initiatives launched by this team include collaboration features in Creative Cloud as well as Creative Cloud Assets, and Creative Cloud Libraries.

This latest release of Adobe Bridge CC includes updates to the following feature set:

Automated cache management

The central cache of Adobe Bridge stores thumbnails, previews, and metadata information in a database. This database improves the performance when users browse or search files. However, the larger the cache, the more disk space it uses. Cache preferences help you manage the trade-off between performance and cache size. We have worked on improving purging cache capability, which is an existing feature in Bridge. In this update, automatic purging of stale cache items has been enabled when the application is idle.

We are also providing a cache compaction option to set up cache clean-up at exit in case the database size increases beyond a certain size. Both these options improve performance of the application and help keep the cache and database clean over extended periods.

On-demand thumbnail generation

To improve the responsiveness of Bridge when you are browsing through a large set of assets, we have made improvements to the way the thumbnails, previews, and metadata are extracted/generated. Now when you select a folder, the thumbnails/previews are extracted on priority for only the on-screen assets. The thumbnails for the remaining files are either generated on demand (when you scroll down/up) or when the application is idle. The metadata extraction happens on priority for all assets, thereby enabling the filter panel and search to become functional sooner.

This change enables you to work with bulky folders without any performance issues like hangs and not-responding states. With this change, you will now have a fully updated Filter panel even before all the thumbnails/previews are generated. This will also enable you to search for the files even before all the thumbnails/previews are generated.

Import from device option on Mac

On Mac OS 10.11.x, Bridge CC did not recognize the following types of devices:

iOS mobile devices

Android mobile devices and digital cameras connected in PTP (Picture Transfer Protocol) or MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) mode

In this update, an alternative to import media from these devices has been provided. You can now choose File > Import From Device to import media from the devices.

Note: This is a Mac only feature and launches Apple Image Capture to bring files from devices into Bridge.

Other significant updates

We also reinstated Autostack Panorama/HDR feature. Given our focus was on stability and performance of Bridge, we have made significant updates to the core technology components. This will set the foundation for a technology platform to enable future development and modernization of Bridge.
