Ricoh surfs into action camera market with WG-M1

11 Sep

Ricoh is entering the choppy waters of the action camera market, which is currently dominated by GoPro. The company isn’t truly a newcomer into the rugged market, as it has been making rugged cameras for many years. The WG-M1 is a 14MP camera that can dive up to 10m underwater, be dropped from 2m, and function at temperatures as low as -10C – all without a housing. The WG-M1 sports a 14MP CMOS sensor, super-wide lens with a 160° field-of-view, 1.5″ LCD, 1080/30p video, and Wi-Fi. Naturally, mounts for nearly every purpose will be available.

Moonbow Photographers in Action

22 Aug

Most years I venture out to photograph moonbows in Yosemite National Park, but this year I’m wondering if conditions will make it worth while. The extreme drought conditions across the state of California have resulted in low snow levels across the Sierras.  While I’m sure there will be enough snowmelt to keep Yosemite’s falls flowing the question is for how long and at what intensity. We’ll have to wait and see if there is a great but short period to photograph moonbows or if a slow and steady melt will result in consistently poor conditions. Time will tell.

Meet the Cube: A Go-Anywhere Action Cam from Polaroid

11 Aug

Extra photos for bloggers: 1, 2, 3

The folks at Polaroid (the ones who brought instant photos to the masses) are at it again!

They’ve cooked up The Cube, a go-everywhere action cam that’s as easy to use as it is easy on the wallet. An action camera for the masses (hey, that’s us … that’s YOU).

The Cube records quality HD video in 1080p with its wide angle lens. The cam’s rubber exterior is not only shock proof and water resistant, but it’s also super cute and friendly!

Attach the magnetic Cube to the bike mount to record your morning commute. Set it up on the tripod and record your morning yoga routine. Grab the waterproof shell and suction it onto your frisbee to toss around at the beach.

Vanishing Vernacular: NYC Storefront Gentrification in Action

store front five boroughs

Overtly a straight-shot photographic compilation, Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York shows the rich vernacular diversity of mom-and-pop shops across all five boroughs. Since publishing the book, however, its creators have revisited their subjects and documented the amazing rate of change as “luxury condos and artisanal cupcake boutiques uproot local delis and dive bars.”

store front bar office

These before-and-after pictures were taken all over the city and reflect the influence of many immigrant cultures, including “Irish, Germans, Jews, Italians, Poles, Eastern Europeans and later Hispanics and Chinese”, but also a more recent trend toward uniformity.

The images themselves are unpretentious, allowing the streets and stores to speak for themselves. Supplemental maps, histories and interviews, however, help flesh the book out without detracting from the power of the photos throughout.

The visual story told by the book and followup photographs is hard to put into words, but captures the spirit of neighborhoods around New York. “The variety is immense, from Manhattan’s Yonah Schimmel Knish Bakery and Katz’s Delicatessen to the Jackson Heights Florist in Queens, Court Street Pastry in Brooklyn, D. D’Auria and Sons Pork Store in the Bronx and the De Luca General Store on Staten Island … the face of New York is etched in their facades.”

About the photographers and authors, James and Karla Murray, and their work: “Their critically acclaimed books New York Nights and Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York as well as their graffiti publication Broken Windowshave set the standard for urban documentation. New York Nights was the winner of the prestigious New York Society Library’s 2012 New York City Book Award. “

Lights. Smartphone. Action!

17 Mar

With just the right accessories, you and your phone can make movie magic.

Might we suggest a dolly that slides, lenses for a new perspective and a constant light to really shine.

Don’t just rely on your hands or zoom to pan your cam. The Table Dolly glides smooth as silk on its four wheels and holds tight to any phone.

Change up your view with the Phone Lens Series. The wide angle and fisheye more than make up for your phone’s auto crop in video mode. The telephoto and macro get you stunning close ups.

For pro-level lighting use the Pocket Spotlight on or off of your phone. Get constant even light right where you want it.
