Yashica reveals its own 35mm film product following bizarre, confusing teasers

Yashica, the iconic brand purchased by Hong Kong-based MF Jebsen Group in 2008, is preparing to launch its own 35mm film product. The company began dropping teasers related to the product late last month, including an image with broken English shared on Facebook and a trio of dark Instagram images that left followers confused.

Yashica first teased the product on April 1 with an image of a film negative featuring ‘NEGATIVE C-41,’ ’24,’ and ‘COLOUR ISO400.’ The image also featured the confusing, grammatically incorrect statement, ‘We will have many Negative’s News start from Today.’

Some followers suspected the image was an April Fools’ prank, but the company followed it up with an image featuring Yashica film rolls on April 4. As noted in the comments on the post, the image appears to be a render based on the obvious gap located at the top of the exposed film strip.

Note the visible gap between the film strip and the 35mm canister.

On April 5, Yashica shared a gallery of photos taken by Kerry Jeffrey using the new Yashica 400 Negative film. The company also shared a statement from Jeffrey, who said, ‘It’s a fun film to use. Not too grainy. There were small small color shifts in strong light, but I like it overall.’

Many photographers have responded to Yashica’s announcement with a lack of enthusiasm or outright criticism, with some of them pointing toward the company’s lackluster Y35 camera it launched after raising more than $ 1m on Kickstarter. It remains unclear when Yashica plans to release its film, but all signs point toward photographers being generally uninterested.

Lensbaby announces the Edge 35mm optic, a wide angle tilt lens for its Optic Swap system

Lensbaby has released Edge 35mm Optic, a new wide angle tilt lens for its Optic Swap system.

The lens, which works in conjunction with the Lensbaby composer Pro or Composer Pro II, can be mounted to Canon EF, Nikon F, Sony E, Fuji X and Micro Four-Third systems. It is the third selective focus lens in Lensbaby’s Optic Swap lineup, rounding out the existing 50mm and 80mm options.

The lens features an aperture range of F3.5-F22 and a minimum focusing distance of 18cm / 7in. It has an eight blade aperture diaphragm and can tilt 15 degrees. Lensbaby doesn’t have specific dimensions or weight available at this time.

‘The Composer Pro II swivels and tilts on a smooth metal ball and socket design, providing a fast and intuitive way to switch between traditional straight lens photos and tilt photography,’ says Lensbaby in the press release. ‘Tilting the lens up or down results in a horizontal slice of focus; left or right a vertical slice; diagonally for a diagonal slice. After setting the tilt, rotating the focus ring moves that slice of focus through the image, from one side of the frame to the other.’

The Edge 35mm Optic is available for pre-order alone for $ 249.95 or as a kit with the Composer Pro II for $ 449.95. The first lenses and kits will start shipping in early April.

Leica announces new APO-Sumicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH L-Mount lens

Leica has announced its new APO-Summicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH lens, an L-mount lens designed to be used with Leica’s SL mirrorless cameras as well as Panasonic and Sigma cameras as part of the L-Mount Alliance.

The lens features 13 elements in 11 groups, including five aspherical elements. The optical elements feature ‘high-quality coatings’ on the various lens elements to help reduce unwanted reflections ‘to an absolute minimum’ and also feature a hydrophobic Aquadura coating on the exterior lens surfaces. The body of the lens is sealed against both dust and moisture.

As with other lenses in Leica’s Summicron-SL collection, the 35mm F2 ASPH lens features a Dual Syncro Drive (DSD) steeping motor for fast autofocus. Leica says the lens ‘completely travels the entire focus range in just 250 milliseconds.’ The lens measures 102mm / 4.02in long and 73mm / 2.87in in diameter and weighs in at 720g / 25.4oz.

The APO-Summicron-SL 35mm F2 ASPH lens will go on sale in mid-April for $ 4,595 at Leica Stores, Boutiques and authorized retailers.

Tamron SP 35mm F1.4, 35-150mm F2.8-4 and E-mount 17-28mm F2.8 III arriving mid-2019

Tamron has announced three new full-frame lenses slated to launch in the middle of 2019: an SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD and 35-150mm F2.8-4 Di VC OSD for DSLRs, as well as an ultra-wide 17-28mm F2.8 Di III RXD for Sony E-mount cameras.

The SP 35mm F1.4 become’s the company’s fastest current lens, joining the existing 35mm F1.8 in Tamron’s high-end SP line. Calling it “the embodiment of all optical technology and manufacturing knowhow Tamron has developed to date,” the company isn’t revealing much more detail – only that it will offer fast, high-precision autofocus.

The Tamron 35-150mm F2.8-4 is designed as a compact, do-it-all zoom and is equipped with stabilization. The lens offers a minimum subject distance of 45cm / 17.7in across the entire zoom range, and low dispersion glass elements aim to keep optical aberration under control.

For Sony a7-series shooters, Tamron offers a 17-28mm F2.8 with a notably small diameter and 67mm filter size. It’s equipped with a stepping motor (denoted as RXD or Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) to boost its appeal to video as well as stills shooters.

Pricing isn’t available at this time; Tamron plans to launch all three lenses in mid-2019.

Tamron announces the development of three lenses—two for full-frame DSLRs and one for full-frame mirrorless cameras

February 20, 2019, Saitama, Japan – Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Shiro Ajisaka), a leading manufacturer of optics for diverse applications, announces the development of two new lenses for full-frame DSLR cameras—the 35-150mm F/2.8-4 Di VC OSD (Model A043) zoom lens and the SP 35mm F/1.4 Di USD (Model F045) fixed focal lens; and a new high-speed ultra-wide-angle zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras—the 17-28mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A046).

Ricoh announces Pentax 35mm F2 and 11-18mm F2.8 K-mount lenses

Ricoh has announced a pair of Pentax K-mount lenses: the HD PENTAX-FA 35mm F2 and HD PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW.

The full-frame 35mm F2 is based on the smc PENTAX-FA 35mm F2 AL from the film era and features HD and SP coatings, with the former reducing reflections and the latter repelling water from the front element. The lens has six elements in five groups and a six-blade aperture. It’s remarkably compact, despite having both an aperture ring and distance scale, and weighs in at just 193 grams. The lens will be available in February for £399.

The PENTAX-DA* 11-18mm F2.8 ED DC AW was introduced way back in the Fall of 2017 and was supposed to ship the following summer. After a bit of a delay, this APS-C lens is finally read to ship next month. The weather-resistant 11-18mm F2.8, equivalent to 16.5-27mm when mounted on an APS-C body, has 16 elements, a nine-blade aperture and an HD coating. There’s also a clamp to lock focus at a desired point and the ‘ability to accommodate the addition of a dew heating strip to prevent condensation without affecting focus-ring operation.’ The lens will be priced at £1399.

Samyang announces 35mm F1.2 ‘XPert’ lens for EF mount cameras, due out in January

Third-party lens manufacturer Samyang has discreetly announced its new XP 35mm F1.2 manual focus lens for Canon EF mount cameras.

The XP 35mm F1.2 lens joins Samyang’s XP 14mm F2.4, XP 50mm F1.2 and XP 85mm F1.2 lenses to round out its ‘XPert’ lens lineup.

Samyang claims it’s built with 50 megapixel photos and 8K video in mind. It’s constructed of 12 elements in 10 groups and includes one extra-low dispersion, two aspherical and three high refractive elements.

The lens offers an aperture range of F1.2 to F16 and features a nine-blade aperture diaphragm. The front filter thread measures in at 86mm and the minimum focusing distance is 0.34m/1.115ft. The lens weighs 1,106g/2.2lbs.

The Samyang XP 35mm F1.2 lens for Canon EF mount lens is set to ship in January 2019 with a suggested retail price of $ 999 USD.

7Artisans shows off new 35mm F/5.6 FE lens designed specifically for drone photography

Chinese lens manufacturer 7Artisans has introduced a new 35mm F5.6 FE lens designed specifically for drone photography.

The unusual-looking lens features an FE mount for full-frame Sony cameras and weighs just 49 grams. Its optical construction is specifically designed to reduce perspective distortion and minimize any vignetting around the edge of the image frame.

7Artisans also notes that the lens can be locked to infinity focus by using three screws to lock the lens into place. The below image is the only sample image 7Artisans has supplied.

Lomography launches new 35mm monochrome film stock cut from German cine film rolls

The film photography enthusiasts over at Lomography have launched a new film, Lomography Black & White 400 35mm Berlin Kino Film.

Inspired by the New German Cinema sweeping through Berlin in the 1960s, this film is extracted from a roll of cine film produced by a legendary German company that has been changing the face of cinema since the early 1900s,” reads the product description. “Originally used to make moody monochrome movies, its gorgeous black and white tones lend a timeless effect to cinematic scenes.”

The film has a native sensitivity of ISO 400, but Lomography says it can be pushed to ISO 800, 1,600, or 3,200 while still retaining a solid tonal range with minimal grain.

The Berlin Kino Film can be developed by professional labs or at home using standard black and white developers, including Kodak D-76, Kodak HC-110, Iford Ilfosol-3, and even Rollei’s Black & White Reversal Kit if you’re wanting to get a little wild and turn the negatives into positives.

Canon RF 35mm F1.8 Macro IS STM sample gallery

The weather and has most definitely taken a turn toward fall here, and our shooting opportunities have followed suit. We brought the Canon RF 35mm F1.8 along to a harvest festival of sorts and a few of our usual haunts. The lens is currently the widest native prime for the RF system, and priced at $ 500 for its launch in December, is also the cheapest lens to debut with the RF. Zeiss announces ZX1 full-frame compact with fixed 35mm F2 lens

Zeiss has just announced the ZX1, the company’s first-ever digital camera. It comes with a 37.4MP full-frame image sensor, fixed 35mm Distagon F2 lens and a huge 4.3″ touchscreen with a resolution of 1280×720 pixels to augment its physical controls. Zeiss has also teamed up with Adobe to offer full Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC capability in the camera itself. It’s designed to allow you to shoot, edit and share on the fly.

The ZX1 offers 512GB of external memory and Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity

Zeiss says both the 37.4MP sensor and 35mm F2 lens were developed in-house and were designed from the outset to be matched with one another, not unlike Leica’s Q and Sony’s RX1 series. Unlike the Leica, however, the ZX1 does not come with any form of image stabilization. The lens offers a minimum focus distance of 30cm (11.8″) and the optical formula comes in at 8 elements in 5 groups.

While the ZX1 does not have a memory card slot, it does have 512GB of internal memory, which the company claims is enough to store approximately 6,800 Raw files in DNG format (or up to 50,000 JPEG files). Zeiss’ ZX1 website does claim that you can connect an external USB drive to the camera to offload images. The camera offers Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and USB-C connectivity. The company will also offer over-the-air software updates.

The ZX1 comes with an electronic viewfinder using an OLED panel at full HD (1920×1080) resolution and a magnification of 0.74x. There’s a flash hot-shoe, but no flash is built into the camera body. The ZX1 offers single and continuous autofocus, though we don’t yet know if continuous focus is allowed at the maximum burst speed of 3fps. Exposure is taken care of courtesy a leaf shutter in the lens.

The ZX1 is designed to allow you to shoot, edit and share on the fly.

Since we live in 2018 and 4K is everywhere, it’s no surprise that the ZX1 is capable of capturing UHD 4K at up to 30fps, and Full HD video at up to 60fps.

The ZX1 appears light on controls, but the large touchscreen – with an unusual curved design – will help users take more control over their photographs, as well as the editing process.

ZEISS ZX1 – That is the name of the newly developed mirrorless full-frame camera from ZEISS that was presented today in Cologne, Germany. SHOOT: the ZEISS ZX1 features a newly designed, integrated ZEISS Distagon 35 mm f/2 T* lens with autofocus that has been perfectly matched to the 37.4 megapixel full-frame sensor developed in-house at ZEISS. The interplay between the lens and sensor ensures first-class picture quality with that typical ZEISS look.

EDIT: The ZEISS ZX1 enables photographers to professionally process RAW images directly on the camera thanks to fully integrated Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC. Moreover, the ZEISS ZX1’s unique user interface supports the user’s particular workflow without any interruption – providing direct access to the most frequently used functions via a 4.3″ multi-touch display.

SHARE: when the networked full-frame camera is connected, the user can upload selected images directly to the internet – without the intermediate transfer to memory cards or other external devices.

512 GB of internal memory provide sufficient space for approximately 6,800 RAW files (DNG) or over 50,000 JPGs – more than enough to handle photos, even during a longer trip, and giving the photographer the chance to let their creativity flow.
