Negative Supply launches Kickstarter for Film Carrier MK1, a 35mm camera scanning system

A company called Negative Supply has launched a crowdfunding campaign for a 35mm film holder for camera scanning called MK1. The product exists in two components, the Film Carrier MK1 and the Pro Mount MK1, the latter of which is an optional weighted base with adjustable feet. According to the team behind the device, Film Carrier MK1 can be used to scan an entire roll of 35mm film in around 5 minutes.

Film Carrier MK1 boasts full 35mm frame scanning, meaning each scan includes the border of the image area. Each frame is ‘forced flat’ via the product’s ‘unique channel technology,’ according to Negative Supply, the result being ’near zero distortion.’

The film carrier has a simple mechanical design that requires the user to load the roll into the device, then manually advance it frame-by-frame by turning an advance wheel. The film emulsion doesn’t come into contact with the film carrier, which only touches the edges of the film where the sprocket holes are located. The design is rounded out with a ‘light shroud’ that protects against ambient light intrusion.

According to Negative Supply, it spent months testing the MK1 design and is ready to bring it to market. The Kickstarter campaign is offering backers a single Film Carrier MK1 35mm scanner for pledges of at least $ 249 USD and the Film Carrier MK1 with Pro Mount MK1 for $ 399 USD or more. Both options are expected to start shipping to backers in September.

Ultra fast and ultra heavy, the Samyang XP / Rokinon SP 35mm F1.2 is one serious lens. The focusing ring is huge and well-damped for incredibly smooth operation, and it’s one of only a handful of 35mm F1.2 lenses on the market that will cover a full-frame sensor. In this video, Julia compares the following lenses using her Canon 5D MkIII:

  • Sigma 24mm f1.4
  • Canon 35mm f1.4
  • Canon 50mm f1.2
  • Canon 85mm f1.2
  • Canon 135mm f2

Julia first tests the lenses shooting full body photos with her model, Maralyn, from the same standing position to show how much background compression each lens shows, as well as the bokeh.

Then she does shots where her model fills more of the frame. To do so, she moves closer and further away to get the model in roughly the same position in the frame but showing what happens to the background in each shot.

The Sigma 24mm has the least background to foreground compression (shows more of the background) when doing full body shots.

The 85mm and the 135mm have great compression, and large background to foreground separation, with no distortion. The 135mm has the most background to foreground separation and compression of all these lenses.

Canon RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM Macro Review

The RF 35mm F1.8 IS STM is one of four lenses announced alongside the Canon EOS R, the first camera in the company’s new EOS R mirrorless system.

Something of an odd one out in that quartet, it’s the only non L-series lens released for the RF line to date, although that will soon change with the arrival of the RF 24-240mm F4-6.3 IS USM later this year. It’s also around half the price of the next cheapest lens in the system, while its focal length and aperture, combined with the fact that it’s a prime lens, also allow it to be considerably smaller and lighter than every other option so far. All of this should mean it holds particular appeal for EOS RP owners who’d like to start exploring the native lens selection but find their camera bodies – and/or wallets – overwhelmed by the other current native offerings.

A 35mm F1.8 option is a fairly sensible and versatile lens to have at the start of a system, and its broad appeal should pique the interest of street, travel, nature, portraiture and even landscape photographers. The added bonus of image stabilization also makes the absence of sensor-based stabilization from the current bodies less of an issue, while ‘Macro’ in the name indicates a close focusing distance of 17cm / 6.7 in (albeit shy of being truly macro, offering a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:2).

The lens has a new formula that sees 11 elements arranged in nine groups. This includes a single glass moulded aspherical element within the focusing group in the middle of the formula, which is in place both to combat spherical aberration and also to keep image quality consistent over focusing distances.

With the lens mounted on either the EOS R or EOS RP, you have access to Canon’s full suite of aberration-rectifying options that deal with vignetting, lateral chromatic aberration, distortion and diffraction, in addition to the Digital Lens Optimizer that aims to counter the softening effects from diffraction, among other things.

The optical design of the RF 35mm F1.8 Macro is similar to the older EF 35mm F2, but flipped. Whereas the older optic (designed for DSLRs) has a large front element and a small rear element, the RF 35mm F1.8 (designed for mirrorless) has a small front element and a large rear element.

Canon has pointed out how the RF mount’s width and the short flange back distance gives new freedom to lens designers, and the optical design here – or, more specifically, the way in which this differs from existing designs in similar lenses – appears to back that up. The rearmost element sits very close to the back of the lens itself and is the largest in the array. Canon claims that this is one of the key reasons for the high corner-to-corner sharpness, even when the lens is used wide open. A diagram of the optical construction also shows that the aperture diaphragm is positioned relatively close towards the front of the lens, which is said to be one reason why the lens can offer such a wide aperture without compromising on size.

The diaphragm is made up of nine blades, which bodes well for round bokeh, while the minimum focusing distance of 17cm gives a minimum working distance – i.e. the distance from the front of the lens to the subject – of 7cm.

A hood isn’t provided with the lens as standard, and that may well be explained by the likelihood of the average user needing or wanting to use it with such an optic. Still, for this kind of money it’s a bit disappointing not to have a hood included.

Design and Handling

Not only is this is the lightest and most compact RF lens so far, but the roadmap Canon unveiled towards the start of the year suggests that will remain so for a while. It’s 30g lighter than the existing EF 35mm F2 IS USM and just a fraction wider, but 70g lighter and considerably shorter in length than the Nikon Z 35mm F1.8. Unlike the latter lens, however, this one isn’t weather sealed.

The lens balances very nicely on the EOS R body and is light enough to allow for one-handed operation when required. Two large switches on the barrel provide control over focus mode and image stabilization, and these click between positions positively. They also barely protrude from the casing, which makes it difficult to inadvertently knock them out of place.

The outer barrel’s matte gray finish mirrors that of the EOS R body, as does the silvery rear of the inner lens barrel with the host cameras throat. The mount is metal and build quality overall appears to be perfectly good.

The lens is encircled by a Control Ring towards its front and a focusing ring towards the middle of the barrel. While the pair sit close to each other, their different finish, together with the fact that the Control Ring is clickable, mean you’re unlikely to mistake them in use.

You can customize the action performed by the Control Ring to your liking, or even deactivate it completely if that suits you, and it’s also possible to switch the direction of rotation if the default arrangement bothers you. If enabled, you can opt for it adjust aperture, shutter speed, ISO or exposure compensation, and in each case you can select whether the ring adjusts these at all times or only when you have your finger half-pressed on the shutter release button. The setting you select stays the same between exposure modes, which you probably won’t find to be an issue unless you tend to hop between exposure modes with some frequency.

Some predictable limitations occur with some combinations or setting and exposure mode, such as no exposure compensation control in manual mode, and no adjustment of aperture in shutter priority mode (and vice-versa).

The Control Ring provides excellent feedback, with increments nice and coarse, and the camera responds without any delay. Those looking to use the lens for video might be disheartened to learn there’s no way to alternate be-tween clicked and de-clicked operation, but if you’re happy with it being permanently de-clicked, Canon can do this for you (for a fee).

Fujifilm issues advisory after discovering counterfeit 35mm rolls of Fujifilm-branded film

Fujifilm Japan has issued an advisory (Japanese) warning customers that counterfeit 35mm film featuring the ‘Fujifilm’ brand has been found on the market. The fraudulent products were discovered when a customer took the counterfeit film to a photo developer in Japan, according to a statement from the company.

Fujifilm warns the counterfeit 35mm film products are packed with ‘movie film’ that can’t be developed using CN-16 and C-41 processes; attempting to develop these products may contaminate the developer, putting other customers’ film at risk. Shops that attempt to develop this counterfeit film are advised to change the developer solution and clean the machine.

It’s unclear how widely the counterfeit film products have been distributed. Fujifilm provides three sample images featuring the non-genuine ‘Fujifilm’ film. In addition to the 250D roll featured in the advisory, Fujifilm says there may be other counterfeit products including 250T and 64D.

Tamron says its new SP 35mm F1.4 is ‘its finest lens ever’

Tamron has released details of a new lens it claims is the finest it has ever produced. Made to celebrate 40 years of the SP range, the SP 35mm F1.4 Di USD will be the ‘embodiment of all the optical technology and manufacturing know-how Tamron has developed to date,’ a sentiment Tamron shared with us in an interview back in April.

The lens will use 14 elements in 10 groups, including four LD (Low Dispersion) and three GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) lens elements. Tamron notes this combination will limit chromatic aberration and will produce high-resolution across the frame as well as ‘beautiful, appealing background bokeh’.

The lens will also feature a new coating called BBAR-G2 (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection Generation 2). Tamron says this reduces reflections, minimizes flare and allows it to achieve better levels of contrast. Powering the focus mechanism inside the lens is Tamron’s Ultrasonic Silent Drive, and a new Dynamic Rolling-cam mechanism has been added to reduce the drive load on the main focusing group to allow the large elements to move more quickly in all operating conditions.

The lens will be available in Nikon F mount first at the end of June, and then for Canon EF at the end of July. It will cost $ 899 / £929.99. it’s available to pre-order from both Adorama and B&H.

The included lens hood is equipped with a locking mechanism. Being able to reliably attach the hood prevents it from unintentionally shifting position or coming off at the wrong time.

Canon’s RF 35mm F1.8 IS Macro is a compact, affordable prime lens for the new EOS R system. The only non – ‘L’ lens currently available for Canon’s mirrorless EOS R and RP, the 35mm F1.8 offers a versatile focal length for everyday shooting, optical stabilization and a useful semi-macro focus capability.

KONO! launches new 35mm Original Mirage film stock and Original Sixpack

European analog photography company KONO! has announced a new film stock called Original Mirage. This 35mm C-41 200 ISO pre-exposed color negative film offers ‘two awesome colors at once,’ according to KONO!, which has added the product to its ‘Original’ line.

Images captured on the Original Mirage film experience a distinct color shift from warm to cool; when the environment is bright, KONO! likens the color shift to ‘a warm, late summer day’ that, in the same photo, transitions toward a late day likeness in which the ‘colors get more prominent and richer.’ Below is a collection of sample images captured on the new Original Mirage film:

Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 II lens for Leica M-mount will be released in June

Following a leak last week claiming the lens would soon be announced, the Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 II wide-angle prime lens with single coating and multi-coating options has been announced. The updated model features ‘the latest optical material,’ according to Cosina Japan, while retaining nearly the same size and design as the original.

The Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 II for Leica M-mount features 8 elements in 6 groups, an F1.4 to F16 aperture range, 10-blade diaphragm, 43mm filter size and 63° angle of view, mirroring the original model. The weight has been slightly reduced in the updated model, dropping from 200g (0.44 lb) to 189g (0.41 lb).

Cosina says it brought ‘the latest optical technology’ to the Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 II lens, explaining that its new product:

Reproduces the unique depiction of the classic lens. At the open aperture, a gentle and gentle bokeh creates a three-dimensional effect. If you focus on it, it will be a sharp depiction, and a variety of expressions are possible with one lens … a gentle and beautiful bokeh when the aperture is open and a sharp notch when it is narrowed widens the width of the photographic expression.

The lens is offered in two variants: single coating (SC) for classic color reproduction and multi-coating (MC) for neutral color reproduction. The company will also sell the LH-6 lens hood for the new model as an optional accessory.

The Voigtlander Nokton Classic 35mm F1.4 II lens will be available starting in June for 75,000 JPY ($ 680 USD, £523, €607). The model isn’t yet listed on B&H Photo or Adorama, but can be pre-ordered in Japan through Yodobashi.
