Photo of the week: Hyena at Night

02 Sep

I was in Liuwa Plain, a remote National Park in the west of Zambia. One of the aims of my trip was to photograph hyenas using a variety of techniques including remote-control cameras and some prototype Camtraptions camera traps.

To show hyenas in their element, I wanted to photograph them at night. The stars in the African night sky are spectacular and I wanted to try to include them in my image.

For this shot, I used my remote-control “BeetleCam” to position my camera on the ground, looking up at the hyena with the sky behind. This is a single exposure. I lit the hyena with two off-camera flashes at the start of the exposure and used a relatively long shutter speed to expose the stars. It didn’t matter if the hyena moved after the initial flash because there was no moonlight to cause ghosting.

You can see more images from my African wildlife at night series in my blog post: Photographing Wildlife at Night in Liuwa Plain.

The photo was captured with a Canon 5D Mark III and 15-35mm F2.8 II at 16mm, 16s, F4.5, and ISO 5000, using Nikon SB-28 flashes and Camtraptions wireless flash triggers.

Will Burrard-Lucas is a wildlife photographer from the UK and founder of Camtraptions. You can view more of his work on his website or by following him on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter.

Gallery: photographing parkour with the Sony a9

02 Sep

Seattle’s Freeway Park is a labyrinth of concrete and greenery that spans the width of the I-5 interstate highway in the heart of downtown. In addition to being an aesthetically interesting pedestrian path from the Washington State Convention Center to Seattle’s First Hill neighborhood, it turns out that the park is incredibly well-suited to parkour.

So when Sony offered DPReview a chance to photograph some of these athletes in our own backyard using their a9 full-frame mirrorless camera, we jumped at the opportunity. Since we’ve already completed our full review and have covered almost every aspect of the camera in some detail, it should come as no surprise that we didn’t really have any epiphanies regarding the a9, but we did come away with some images we liked.

Within the in-depth pages of our full review (and we won’t be offended if you haven’t read it front-to-back), we go through the a9’s autofocus system in some detail: we found what works great, what still needs some work, and our preferred setups for different shooting scenarios.

See how the Sony a9’s autofocus fares with frisbee and cycling

So in taking what we learned from our extensive testing, we set our cameras to continuous autofocus and principally used two autofocus area modes – Lock-On AF: Flexible Spot, and Wide.

On the Sony a9, ‘Wide’ AF area mode basically leaves it up to the camera to determine your subject and begin tracking with its 693 AF points. Out of every mode, it is by far the fastest to acquire a subject and begin tracking, though there is a caveat; the camera doesn’t always pick the subject you wanted it to, but it’s far more reliable than you might expect.

The a9’s 693 autofocus points cover just about all of the frame, and both ‘Wide’ and ‘Lock-On’ AF area modes can take advantage of all of them.

Lock-On AF: Flexible Spot is most analogous to Nikon’s 3D Tracking or Canon’s iTR subject tracking methods, whereby you use an AF point of your choosing (meaning you can move it around with the AF joystick on the back), and place that over the subject that you want the camera to begin tracking. A half-press of the shutter yields a very slight delay as the camera ‘locks on’ to your subject before it begins tracking, but it’s not so long a delay as to be really problematic.

As we’d found throughout the course of the review, Lock-On AF on the a9 has been demonstrably improved over previous a7-series models. However, it still sometimes has a tendency to jump to other subjects in the frame, or fail to initially acquire your subject at all. We’re hoping that this may be improved in the future with refinement of the AF algorithms and firmware updates.

A 29 frame burst photographed at 20 frames per second.

But none of this is to say that the a9 is somehow less-than-capable; we all came away with an absurd amount of in-focus shots that we were happy with (thank you, 20fps burst shooting), and we were universally impressed with the athleticism, skill and fearlessness that the parkour athletes exhibited for us that afternoon. Check out our full gallery below.

Canon to launch new, partially-automated camera plant in Japan in 2019

02 Sep

Canon has revealed that it is building a new semi-automated camera plant in Japan, and that it expects to open the plant in 2019. The factory will be located in the Miyazaki Prefecture on a 300,000 square meter land parcel, marking this the first time Canon has built a new camera production facility in Japan since 2010. The plant will focus on producing single-lens reflex cameras, according to Nikkei.

This business move is part of a growing effort on Canon’s part to bring more of its production business back to its home nation, a move spurred in part by increased wages abroad. Though Canon had originally moved much of its production outside of Japan, the cost of domestic manufacturing has lowered thanks to factory automation technologies.

Per Nikkei’s report, Canon successfully brought 56% of its production back to Japan from overseas destinations last year, and it is working toward a goal of bringing that number up to 60%. In addition, Canon’s Oita Prefecture factory is said to be more than 70% automated, greatly reducing the number of laborers the company requires.

What will this mean for consumers? Hopefully lower prices, or at the very least a more economically efficient and cash-positive Canon.

Lensrentals shares photos of destroyed camera gear they got back after the eclipse

Our friends over at Lensrentals shared an entertaining-if-a-bit-depressing post today: rental camera gear destroyed during the solar eclipse of 2017. It seems that, despite plenty of warnings from other websites and Lensrentals itself leading up to the incredible celestial phenomenon, not everybody got the message that you always need to use a solar filter to shoot the eclipse.

As such, Lenrentals got back everything from melted aperture systems, to burned shutters, to a fried mirror—ostensibly because people were shooting in live view.

LR is careful to specify that they actually got very few damaged units back given just how much gear they rented ahead of the eclipse, and that this post is meant to entertain not criticize:

“Please keep in mind, this post is for your entertainment, and not to be critical of our fantastic customer base,” writes Zach Sutton. “With this being the first solar eclipse for Lensrentals, we didn’t know what to expect and were surprised with how little of our gear came back damaged.”

So, entertain away. You can see a few of the images in the gallery above, or visit the full Lensrentals blog post for more pictures and descriptions of the damage the sun can do to expensive camera gear when you’re not properly equipped to shoot it.

These drink coasters look like a camera lens when stacked

02 Sep

Looking for a stylish way to keep condensation from forming unsightly rings on your desk? Are you a huge photography nerd? Fotodiox has a solution that will keep both parts of your psyche nice and happy: cup coasters that, when you stack them together, appear to form a single camera lens.

Fotodiox calls the quirky product the CraftMaster LenzCoaster, and offers them in three different varieties.

A careful look at each LenzCoaster ‘lens’ reveals that it is split into five sections, each section a different drink coaster with silicone padding. Magnets embedded in each coaster keep the pieces together when stacked.

The lens coasters are offered in white and black, the latter of which comes in a variety with black and red ‘caps.’ Fotodiox is offering all three versions now for $ 25.
