How to Use Foreground for Dramatic Portraits

06 Feb

I remember a long time ago, I took a close up shot that I absolutely loved of a little kid on a slide for an article on a local park that had won a national award. I proudly brought it to my magazine editor, who said, “That’s great , but where’s the rest of the shot?” She couldn’t tell if Continue Reading

26 Speed Busting Fast Shutter Speed Images

06 Feb

Last week we saw some ethereal and mysterious long exposure photos. Now let’s go the opposite way and look at some images there would not be possible without fast shutter speeds (with a couple that have some help using flash to freeze motion too).

Images at either end of the shutter speed scale give us a chance to capture life in an altered state; one we cannot see with our eyes. Long exposures blur things beyond recognition and add mystery. Short exposures freeze things in time and space and capture literally a millisecond of time in an image.

Add flash and you can stop bullets, speeding arrows and more. Enjoy the world of high speed photography:

Faceted Facade: Crystaline Hotel Shaped Like Amethyst Geode

06 Feb

gemstone shaped hotel

Grand or gaudy, brilliant or just big, this giant-sized, crystal-styled structure is to be the first in a series of gemstone-inspired hotels in which guest rooms are tucked behind colorful glazing – even its designers at NL Architects concede the scheme is at least “slightly insane.”

Dubbed the Amethyst Hotel, this project draws on a long history of cultural associations with this crystal: “The violet-coloured quartz stone has been the subject of numerous myths through history – in Greece it was believed to prevent drunkenness, while medieval soldiers used it for protection during battle, and others thought it could strengthen the immune system or prevent nightmares.”

Kamiel Klaasse and Pieter Bannenberg also drew inspiration from the long-standing tradition of having huge atrium spaces at the heart of hotel designs, seen in major chains like Hyatt and Marriott in the United States and around the world.

Instead of constructing the whole building around an central atrium, however, this approach conceptually slices the structure through its center, just as a geode is cut open to reveal the inner cavity and its hidden crystals.

Set to be built on an artificial island in China (though shown here in various theoretical settings), the design is already arguably serving part of its purpose simply by having been proposed: it is being discussed, debated, critiqued and commented upon by architects and designers around the world and as they say: all press is good press.

Antelope Canyon

Many of us who live in N.America are familiar with some of the icons of the US West & the US National Parks.
Ignacio Palacios sees them with the fresh eyes of someone from away.
He travels variously to Antelope Canyon, Hawaii, Alaska and Yellowstone with his family and his cameras.
Here he shares some excellent images.

06 Feb

Samsung has just taken the wraps off a new mirrorless camera, which inherits most of the features from the company’s flagship NX1. The NX500 takes a lot of the core features of the NX1 and wraps them up in a much smaller, rangefinder-style body at a lower cost. We got our hands on an NX1 recently, to get a feel for how this new camera feels and operates. Click through for some images
