20 Sep

The part of the world where I live, we’re already starting to feel the changing season coming. Here that means summer is giving way to fall and cooler temperatures. This roundup of summer sports photography is to help those of us in the northern part of the world to hang on to it a little bit longer.

What’s your favorite sport to watch or photograph?

Maybe you’ll be inspired to go shoot some action or sports while the weather lasts.

Weekly Challenge – Sports Photography

20 Sep

Earlier today I shared a collection of sports images. Now as usual it’s time for the challenge. I throw down the gauntlet and urge you to accept it and play along (pun intended).

Sports photography is a tricky subject. Fast moving subjects, quickly changing lighting conditions, and restrictions on where you are allowed to stand. All these things can be overcome and conquered – with practice!

Now is the perfect time to get out and do just that. Try out your high speed shooting mode, or borrow a lens. Find a local sporting event and get out and take some action photography shots. Here are some examples to get you started:

By Jim Larrison

By Javier

By Rahul Bhattacharyya

By USAG- Humphreys

By Todd Fong

By brent flanders

By Devon Christopher Adams

By David Humpohl

Need some help with some sports photography tips? Try these:

  • Catching The Action: Photographing Youth Sports
  • Catch that Shot! 10 Tips for Weekend Warrior Sports Photographers
  • Sports Photography – An Introduction
  • Tips for Indoor Sports Photography – Part 1

Share your sports images

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them. Show me your best images in this week’s challenge.

Low Cost House-in-a-House Made of 2 Shipping Containers

20 Sep

Low Cost Shipping Container House 1

Two colorful shipping containers set inside a garage-like outer structure form a spacious yet incredibly affordable family home free of the issues that can sometimes come with crate-based architecture, like poor insulation and soundproofing. The containers form two private rooms with loft space on each roof, while the envelope creates a courtyard and encourages air flow.

Low Cost Shipping Container House 2

The outer structure features a section of transparent panels to bring in daylight, saving energy. Large sliding doors open the home to the air in nice weather, and translucent walls help blur the boundaries between outdoors and in a little bit more.

Low Cost Shipping Container House 4

JYA-RCHITECTS designed the home for a family of seven in a rural South Korea village as an alternative to the dangerous, unsanitary housing they were previously living in. Sponsored by the Korea Child Fund, which improves living environments for low-income families, the project took on the challenge of creating a home that was large enough to make the family comfortable while sticking to an extremely tight budget.

Low Cost Shipping Container House 5

The solution is a single-story home with both private and communal spaces, making use of unwanted, cheap, prefabricated and readily available materials. While the envelope was custom-created for the project, it’s easy to imagine this idea being replicated with garage or shed kits, putting possibilities for affordable DIY housing in the hands of people of all walks of life, all over the world.

Photokina 2014 Video: The Samsung NX1

19 Sep

With the introduction of the NX1 mirrorless camera, Samsung has put a stake in the ground of the photography market. We stop by the Samsung booth to learn more about the NX1, a new 50-150mm F2.8 image stabilized lens, and also get a peek at the company’s “technology demonstration” 300mm F2.8 lens. See video

Kolosse

19 Sep

19, September, 2014 – Photokina 2014 Report Days 2 & 3

19 Sep

Photokina has been running for three days now.  Today we publish our Photokina Report For Days 2 and 3.  We have some very good video interviews but for the time being we are not able to include them in the report due to poor internet connections and several failed uploads.  We will keep trying to get these uploaded.  Worst case they may have to wait until Monday when Michael returns home.  We have one more day at the show and on Friday we will visit Samsung and a few others.  Also we will be doing a Michael and Kevin’s recap of Photokina. Please check back.

Opinion: Why the death of the point and shoot benefits photographers

19 Sep

The death of the point-and-shoot compact has been disastrous for all the major camera manufacturers, but it’s not all bad news. Manufacturers  are clambering over themselves to offer the most attractive features to the last group of people willing to pay for a good camera, spurring the kind of innovation we’ve not seen in a long time. Find out why we think photographers are reaping the greatest benefits from the decline of the point-and-shoot. Read more
