Paddling through a Magic Forest

17 May

Fish eye lens perspective when paddling through a submerged forest

I love to paddle the Lonetree Reservoir southwest of Loveland during springtime. You can always enjoy a nice view of Rocky Mountains Front Range. It is a great spot to shoot sunsets over mountains. When water is high I enjoy to paddle through submerged trees and bushes. Please keep in mind that the heron rookery is a restricted area during the nesting season, but there are other places where you can paddle into a forest.

The above picture featuring Sea Wind canoe in cottonwood forest was shot on May 15m 2014 with Canon 5D Mark II camera and Sigma 15 mm Fisheye lens. I confess: I spent a longer while playing with that lens and shooting in both horizontal and vertical.

Get Your Virtual Wings: Oculus Rift Machine Simulates Flight

17 May

[ By Steph in Gaming & Computing & Technology. ]

birdflapping

Feel the wind on your face and smell the pine sap of the forest as you gaze down at the scenery far below – without ever leaving the ground. ‘Birdly’ is a new machine developed by the Zurich University of the Arts that simulates flight using an Oculus Rift virtual reality headset, a motor-powered machine that mimics flying movements, a fan to fake the feeling of wind and even olfactory feedback tailored to the landscape of your choice.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 2

The creators studied the movement of the Red Kite bird and translated it to a sensory-motor coupling that enables you to flap your ‘wings’ as if you’re really flying. The movement of your arms directly correlates to the flying sensation you experience through the Oculus Rift headset.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 4

Once strapped in, you’re embedded in a virtual landscape as if you were the Red Kite itself for the closest possible simulation of flight that’s possible without ever actually going into the air. The faster you go, the stronger the air pushed out by the fan positioned right in front of your head.

Oculus Rift Flight Simulator 3

While it’s easy to imagine Birdly becoming a fixture at amusement parks, so far, it’s just an art installation, with no plans for commercialization. The creators say there are a few tweaks still needed to keep users from getting sick during the flight experience. This device is just the latest in an intriguing line of creations using Oculus Rift to bend reality, like a recent Gender Swap experiment that allows the user to switch to the point of view of someone of a different gender.

HTC One Mini 2 revealed, no more Ultrapixels

17 May

htconemini21.jpg

HTC has unveiled the One Mini 2 which is a scaled-down version of its current flagship phone, the One M8, with a similar design but with downgraded internal components. And in a slightly surprising move, HTC has also decided to not deploy the 4MP “ultrapixel” sensor in the One Mini 2. Instead it comes with a 13MP chip. Learn more

Lifelogger wants to record your life

16 May

Lifelogger.jpg

Wearable devices are the flavor of the season and the digital camera sector is no exception. A little while ago we reviewed the Autographer and now the Lifelogger, which is currently trying to get funded via a Kickstarter project, offers a similar concept. The idea is to record liife events from your point of view with the Lifelogger attached to your ear. It’s similar to how you would wear a bluetooth headset. Learn more
