What The Duck #1300

26 Apr

wtdlogo_big.jpg

We’ve come to the end of another week here at dpreview, and as our thoughts drift to weekend shooting opportunities, it’s time to take things a little less seriously. Aaron Johnson’s comic strip ‘What the Duck’ is just the thing, taking a gently satirical look through the lens of a photographically inclined waterfowl. You can find it published here (and in our newsletter) every week; we hope you enjoy it, and your weekend.

Weekly Photography Challenge – Pet Photography

26 Apr

By Jamie Grant

Last couple of weeks have been all about nature and the outdoors. Another part of nature is the animal kingdom. So this week’s photography challenge is to get out and photograph some pets. If you don’t have any borrow your friend’s or neighbours.

Photographing animals presents a unique set of challenges. You have a moving, possibly unwilling subject to deal with – as well as potentially tricky exposure to try and get detail in fur or feathers. Just the right light is essential, as is a delicate hand at working with your furry (or feathered, or scaled) friends.

Let’s see how creative you can get. Here’s a few ideas to get you started:

Share your pet photos!

Simply upload your shot into the comment field (look for the little camera icon in the Disqus comments section as pictured below) and they’ll get embedded for us all to see or if you’d prefer upload them to your favourite photo sharing site and leave the link to them.

A new Kickstarter project is aiming to make digital images more accessible to those without social media accounts. Famatic is a digital picture frame that connects to Facebook and Instagram – or you can email pictures as well. The idea is to place Famatic on your parents’ or grandparents’ mantelpiece and send them images of their grandkids and family events straight to the frame. Learn more

ThinkTank StreetWalker HardDrive backpack review

26 Apr

ThinkTank-Streetwalker-1.jpg

A good photography backpack is capable of stowing essential elements like a full-size camera body, small family of lenses, laptop, tripod, and all necessary accessories. A truly great backpack can carry all of that while being carry-on friendly and providing a high level of comfort and adjustability. The minds at ThinkTank strove to bring that full package with the StreetWalker HardDrive photo backpack. But does it provide enough bang to justify its $ 229.75 price tag? Find out in our review

38 Pet Photos to Amaze and Inspire You

25 Apr

We’ve been focused on nature and landscape for a while on dPS so it’s time to shift gears and move over to the fauna, specifically – pets. If you have any pets you no doubt have endless photos of them. I have tons of photos of my cats on my iPhone. But let’s take it up a notch and see some really outstanding pet photos and see how it’s done. I might even motivate myself to get out the “real” camera and take some photos of my girls.

Lost 1960s moon photos recovered from analog tapes

25 Apr

289762main_GPN_2000_001588_1024-768.jpg

More than 50 years after the satellites that captured the first high-res images of the moon plunged to the surface and were destroyed, a Wired article tells the story of a group of people that found the tapes after they ended up in storage in California. Re-engineering the old drives capable of reading the tapes, they’ve recovered these historically significant images. Learn more

1939: England in Color (part 1)

25 Apr

CarInCorn.jpg

Color photography has been around in one form or another for a very long time, but has only been the norm for around forty years. Their relative rarity makes the discovery of older color images perennially fascinating. After all, early color offers us a view of the past in the colors and tones of our own experience and memories. Which brings us to a box that editor Barnaby Britton found recently in his Grandmother’s attic. See photos and read more of the story

Cracked-Earth Desert Canopy Shelters Underground Oasis

25 Apr

underground park abu dhabi

Splitting at the seams like sections of sun-baked desert, this expansive park opens to the sky between a network of gaps and provides shade for people and plant life below. A sunken oasis designed by Thomas Heatherwick Studios, this massive Al Fayah Park will span over 1.3 million square feet and feature play and picnic areas, performance spaces and festival venues, vegetable gardens and native flowers amid rivers and other water features.

cracked desert underground retreat

Anyone familiar with places like Black Rock City, Nevada will recognize the shape driving the design concept, but these are more than just an architect’s affectation. Beyond its naturalistic source of visual inspiration, the landscaping strategy speaks to climactic conditions in the United Arab Emirates – the sheltering dome of leaf-like decks keeps things cool below, but also helps prevent moisture loss.

subterrean people plants water

From the designers: “By creating partial shade for plants, the canopy reduces the amount of water lost to evaporation, improving the park’s energy efficiency and sustainability. Whilst providing shade in the daytime, the elevated plates also become a network of unique meeting places in the cooler evening hours.”

‘This sunken oasis becomes a landscape of plants, mature trees and a cluster of public recreational spaces. The 20-metre-high shaded garden is conceived as a place for families to gather and picnic, as well as a place for learning and festivals.”

For those potential critics who still see the structure as somewhat too literal, it is worth noting the wide-ranging appeal of something so iconic to potential international tourists. Whether the shapes seem striking or trite to a given person’s tastes, part of the purpose of the design is to be recognizable and ultimately draw in visitors from around the world. One question still worth raising, though, might be its fit in the site context – will it blend into the surrounding ground or stand out in the city?

Hier gibt es nichts zu sehen

25 Apr

Was, wie bitte? Konsum?

So weit, so gut.
