A Simple Exercise on Working with Natural Light in Portraits

01 Apr

Today I thought it might be fun to share a little exercise that we feature in our Natural Light eBook (by Mitchell Kanashkevich) – both because it gives you a taste for the content but also because I think it’s a useful exercise to do to help you understand light and photograph portraits using it.

This exercise is particularly useful because one of the differences in shooting with natural light as opposed to artificial light is that with artificial light you’re able to ‘direct’ the light (by moving lights around your subject and changing how much those lights output).

When it comes to working with natural light we need to learn to direct ourselves and/or the subject in relation to the light source.

Rather than moving lights around… it is us (and the subject) that may need to be moved.

The exercise is simple:

Find a room with a window allowing fairly bright diffused (indirect) light.

Get your subject to move to different spots in relation to the window. Move around with the subject, take photos, and pay attention to what effect the movement of both of you has on the way that light makes the subject look.

For the eBook Mitchell did this exercise with his nephew. Below are the images and corresponding diagrams of where the subject was in relation to the window and below are descriptions of the shots, EXIF information and what Mitchell did and what impact that had on the shot.

3 directions window light

1. The subject is turned at approximately 45° towards the window.

Result: A very smooth progression of light to dark tones.

EXIF: 16-35@35mm, f/2.8, 1/125s, ISO 2000

2. Subject is at 90° or parallel to the window.

Result: Very harsh contrast between the side of the face close to the window and the side further away from the window.

EXIF: 16-35@35mm, f/2.8, 1/200s, ISO 500

3. The subject is at 90°, parallel to the window, with his head turned towards it.

Result: Light still works the same way, but instead of one side of the face being dark, the face is well lit and it is the back of my nephew’s head which is dark.

EXIF: 16-35@35mm, f/2.8, 1/125s, ISO 500

Mitchell also notes: Having a light source such as a window also gives you control over the intensity of light. The further away you are from the light source, the less intense it is. Less
intensity also means less contrast between light and dark.

I did this exercise recently with a family member and was fascinated with the results and was also reminded what an incredible variety of styles of shots that you can achieve – all in the one setting but by simply changing up where you position yourself and your subject.

Give the exercise a go and let us know how you go!

Doctor Who as Lighting U.

01 Apr

We have a rule in the Hobby household. If the kids can get ready for bed quickly enough, we get to watch an episode of Doctor Who together. It is one of those rare shows that is equally enjoyed by every member of our family—including two middle-aged parents, a 12-year-old boy and a 14-year-girl.

That alone is remarkable. And as good as the show is, I've lately found myself watching it for the lighting as much as the imaginative story lines. A look at perhaps the most Strobist-y show on the TV dial, below.

Leseraktion: Dein hässlichstes Foto aller Zeiten

01 Apr

My New Kickstarter Project: Photographer’s Social Media Mouse

01 Apr

Ever since evangelizing the importance of social media to fellow photographers in 2006, I’ve long yearned for a tool to help balance photo/video editing time with the incredibly important task of marketing myself on social media. After years of research and prototyping I’m happy to announce a new Kickstarter project to realize my dream, a mouse designed especially for photographers who are super active on social media.
I’ve titled this project the Photographers’s Social Media Mouse.

Kickstarter Project: Photographer's Social Media Mouse

How it works is quite simple. Employing Bluetooth wireless technology the Photographer’s Social Media Mouse detects when a photographer has navigated to a web browser. With in 10 seconds of detecting activity on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, Instagram, 500px, MySpace, and Friendster a gentle yet firm 7,800,000 volt shock is applied to the finger of the user. The momentary sensation causes brief paralysis in the arm reminding the user that more important editing or business communications are the order of the day.

Additional Features

  • Designed for travel – More comfortable than a touchpad, instant-on performance for maximum productivity on the road
  • Smart power management – Long battery life, on & off switch, power-saving modes and a low-battery indicator light
  • Precision optical performance – 1000-dpi optical sensor technology for incredibly smooth, precise tracking
  • Convenient carrying case – Comes with pouch for easy storage.

Important product information: Batteries are not included, use of mouse is not recommended by left handed users to avoid direct current to the heart and avoid data loss by keeping mouse on an approved non-conductive mouse pad.

Your support is needed to make this a reality. To contribute visit my Kickstarter page.

Product Details
Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 7 x 2.5 inches
Shipping Weight: 11.2 ounces
Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.

Note: The Photographer’s Social Media Mouse is restricted and cannot be shipped to CT, IL, HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI, and WI. They are also restricted in Annapolis, MD; Baltimore, MD; Baltimore County, MD; Chicago, IL; Dension/Crawford County, IA; Washington DC; and Philadelphia, PA. Any orders for these areas/states will be canceled.

convertible off grid car

Forget the trailer and start trailblazing – this emission-free and fully-electric vehicle can juice up just like its Tesla cousins, but can also use photovoltaics and solar sails to recharge well off the beaten path.

Picture the three-wheeled Ecco as the latest in a long-standing series of streamlined and transforming vehicles for dwelling  in, starting with Dymaxion and continuing to Airstream and through Volkswagen. Except, for the first time, conventional fuel is not required.

A light aluminum-and-class frame unfolds, stretching fabric into place and expanding the living space when stationary. This action also allows the driver to tilt up the sun-gathering elements for maximum charging capabilities.

Winter Paddling with Sea Wind Canoe on Horsetooth Reservoir

01 Apr

winter canoe paddling in Colorado

8 years ago, end of March, 2005 …

Sea Wind canoe was featuring in a movie clip from paddling on the Horsetooth Reservoir in a winter scenery.

I launched from Lory State Park at North Eltuck Cove and paddled south to Orchard Cove and back. Launching was fun since I didn’t have to carry the boat to the water. Water Abstracts come from the same paddling trip.

I used Canon Optura XI camcorder mounted on a regular tripod on land and on mini tripod in the front of Sea Wind.

I visited the Orchard Cove a few day later. It wasn’t that nice without snow. When the reservoir was drained during recent years most of cottonwood trees along the shores died. There were cut down and only stumps and piles of wood scraps remained. I remember paddling beyond these trees years ago when the reservoir was full.

The opening picture in this post, Sea Wind canoe in Quarry Cove of Horsetooth Reservoir, was shot on March 28, 2009 with Canon 40D on a tripod. It is one of Horsetooth pictures in my stock photography portfolio available for purchase and licensing.
