12 Feb

Get your Sony HX9V from Amazon in stock today-6/18: www.amazon.com Here is the full review of the Sony HX9V which many of you have been waiting patiently (or impatiently) for. The HX9V seems to represent a real step forward for Sony from the HX5V. While some may argue it is an evolutionary upgrade rather than revolutionary, the HX9V is with out doubt one of the best digital cameras at its price point and size, especially when taking into account its16X G lens. For 9.99 or less, the HX9V makes a very compelling case for an upgrade…for full impressions, start watching! Enjoy! -TDD Fireworks video sample: www.youtube.com

bit.ly – Nikon D7000 16.2MP DX-Format CMOS Digital SLR with 3.0-Inch LCD and 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S DX VR ED Nikkor Lens When it was announced in September the D7000 took a lot of people by surprise. Although a D90 successor had been on the horizon for some time, what wasn’t expected was how close in specification terms the new camera would turn out to be to the D300S. In some respects, in fact, the D7000 actually outguns its (supposedly) semi-pro cousin, and offers a compelling upgrade option to both D90 and D300S owners, whilst nominally sitting between the two in Nikon’s current lineup. Although ergonomically, the D7000 is a very close match for the D90, its overall ‘feel’ is considerably more serious, thanks to a magnesium alloy body shell and slightly thicker rubber coating on the hand grip and rear of the camera. At 16.2Mp the D7000 offers the second highest resolution of any Nikon DSLR, behind only the 24Mp D3X. All of these pixels are packed onto a newly developed CMOS sensor, which is almost certainly the same or very similar to that in the Sony Alpha SLT-A55. As well as extra resolution, the new sensor also offers a higher ‘standard’ ISO span of 100-6400, expandable up to the equivalent of ISO 25600. The D7000’s AF and metering systems are also new, and represent a significant upgrade to those used in the D90. The new camera boasts a 39-point AF array with 9 cross-type AF points and works in collaboration with a new 2016-pixel RGB metering sensor to allow 3D AF

A German artist is planning on creating a mobile version of IMAGO1:1 – the only camera in the world capable of true 1:1 reproduction for full-length self-portraits. Originally built in 1970, the camera works like a photo booth, projecting a true-to-life 1:1 portrait onto 60cm x 200cm sheets of black-and-white direct positive paper. Artist Susanna Kraus, daughter of original IMAGO1:1 co-inventor Werner Kraus is seeking £95,000 to fund the development of a mobile version of this famous camera to tour around the world. Click through for more information on the camera and the Kickstarter-funding link.

An Introduction to Wedding Photography

12 Feb

ref=dp_image_0.jpegI remember once being invited to photograph a friend of a friend’s wedding. I declined.

Why? At the time I had recently interviewed a number of pros who specialised in capturing that magic in the process of creating a magazine story on that occupation. Whew! Not for me I decided. Way beyond my skill set, patience, resourcefulness and energy levels.

So, it was with a sense of relief that I reviewed this book, safe in the knowledge that no-one, and I mean no-one, could or would ever put me through the trauma that wedding photography presents.

For her part, author Lorna Yabsley recalls how, when starting out as a wedding photographer in the days of film, life was so much simpler and consisted of formally staged shots made in an hour long session, the best of which ‘would ultimately be shown to the client for them to choose a set of images that would be pasted into a finished album.’

Today’s generation of wedding shooters mostly work in digital, with an endless number of shots, reviewed instantly … ‘now we have to do the job of the lab in the post production … a whole new skill base that photographers must understand and equip themselves with.’

The book heads off with a chapter entitled ‘Understanding Weddings’ and the advice that the photographer should not dominate the proceedings, be informal, develop an eye for composition, acquire a basic knowledge of photography and understand your camera.

Next we move into listing the skills necessary, how to deal with people, preplan, understand the plan of the day’s events, learn who are the most important people, etc.

And we haven’t taken a shot yet!

More ensues on getting the commission, establishing your rates, how to promote yourself, plan advertising and dealign with the couple.

You may be surprised to find that it is only when you reach the near end of the book that 12 pages are devoted to choice of camera, lenses, accessories such as flash, etc and advice is given on what computer and printer may best suit your endeavours.

While there is help on such matters as post production, editing etc that help deal with the digital nature of these images … but there are no hints on how to tweak the images, remove a boil on the bride’s bonce or a bald spot on the groom’s pate.

Aside from this there is much useful advice on securing the final print sale, album design etc. Missing is any advice on how to combine video shooting with stills work. Those brave souls who do combine the chores have probably got it all to themselves!

For those who see a business opportunity in wedding photography the book is a major helper but don’t come looking for a load of tech help.

Impressive, large photographs make the book an attractive read.

Untitled-1.jpeg

Flickr users may be alarmed to learn some of their private images could have been temporarily viewable publicly. Yahoo’s photo sharing site alerted affected users with an email message last week, detailing the error and explaining what steps to take. According to Flickr, a software bug resulted in some private images, uploaded between April – December 2012 becoming public for a short period from January 18th to February 7th this year. Are photos posted on the Internet ever really private? Click through for more details and analysis on connect.dpreview.com.
