Embrace the change in your life

03 Jan

Samantha moves away

I met Sam when she was kind enough to model at one of our photography workshops a few years ago, since then we’ve done well over a dozen shoots and have become close friends.  I love talking to Sam, sometimes we get lost in conversation for hours, if my camera is nearby I’ll pull it out, if it’s not I don’t, but it’s during days like this that I usually shoot my favorite images.  We were talking about change, and dreams, and boys and her moving to Boston (which just happened this past week).  I jotted down some of my favorite things she shared… hope she doesn’t mind!

“I am learning to embrace the change in my life.  It is taking me to new places and doing new things and in the journey I am discovering so much.” -Sam

Embrace the change in your life.
Because change is the only constant. Changing relationships, seasons, moods, friends, our surroundings.
Sometimes I feel  as though I am addicted to change, like I wanna see how many different people I can be.
Because if change is the only thing I can count on, then I better get use to it.
Get use to the heartbreak, get use to being let down, get use to new experiences, get use changing your mind- and then changing it all over again.
if possibilities are endless, then i am never the same person twice.
It’s like a cycle really, the cycle of change.
Change your clothes, change your attitude , change your perspective.
How many different ways can i see this world?
Change your outlook-what do you  think you know?
Life is magic, if you let it be.

-Sam Law

“The world is just a dream, because guess what, when you’re dreaming it’s just your subconscious, just rolling, when you’re awake that subconscious is still rolling. Everything we see we have so much connected to it. Isn’t it interesting how sometimes when you start telling stories with people, your idea of the story changes, your perception on it changes or all of the sudden the memory is different because someone is all, no I saw it this way. We all have these complex perceptions and where they are rooted, in the human psyche, if this is just a dream (which I strongly believe it is) then I’m creating it.  If I realize I’m dreaming it.  If I’m aware of that subconscious that’s playing all the time then I can train it.” -Sam

“The world is the best teacher” -Jake
“Only if you’re the best student.” -Sam
“I get worried. Poor students, get hard life lessons.” – Jake
“Have you ever heard the quote, in school you study and then you take the test but in life you take the test and then study where you f*%$ @# up?” -Sam

“I think I have the best life ever, and I don’t even know it sometimes. Like sometimes I just forget. We have the luxury of daydreaming and wonder about how we’re going to fix our problems. We just get to think.” -Sam

Winter Solstice

03 Jan

If you follow me on instagram (@jakegarn)  then you may already be familiar with the how much time I’ve been spending on what I affectionately call Crystal Mountain.

This time, on December 21, 2012, I went up the mountain alone with just a notebook and my Canon 5D Mark III.

I only took a handful of photos, yet all of them had a fair amount of sacrifice to get.  Whether it was laying in the frost, sitting on a cactus, leaning into a thornbush, or just pulling my camera out in the shade when the temperature was well below freezing (and metal feels coooooold).

The best shots are always kind of like that… anyway, I thought I’d share my favorites from my most favorite relaxing past time – that all of us should do more of – shooting alone in nature with my favorite lens, the Canon 50mm 1.2L.

Colchicum ‘Lilac Wonder’ flower growing timelapse Filmed by Neil Bromhall for www.rightplants4me.co.uk These flowers bloom in autumn. Plant in well drained soil. If the soil is too wet the bulbs are prone to rotting. This was filmed in my studio over a period of 6 days using Nikon D300 camera, Ellinchrom studio flash, Exposure interval 8 minutes The damaged flower was chewed by an unknown pest underground before it emerged. It was probably a slug Music “Gently” by Debbie Wiseman

Leidenschaft: Retusche

03 Jan

Had a chance to interview Tom Howie, VP of Sales and Marketing for Glidecam at NAB last month and he was gracious enough to share, in great detail, the proper way to set-up and fine tune the Glidecam HD 2000 (or any Glidecam HD) during the interview. During the process he candidly answers questions that I’ve seen floating around the forums relating to the use of not only the Glidecam products but all similar devices. Here’s a (very 😉 rough cut of the part of the interview that directly relates to setting up, fine tuning and actually using any of the Glidecam HD units. After the setup instruction he shares some interesting tips and exercises to help us get ready to shoot successfully with the rigs. I cut a lot out and split it into 3 parts but it’s still 38 mins long (total) so grab a cup of coffee and settle back for an in depth look at the proper way to set up and start using the Glidecams according to Tom and Glidecam.. btw: Schy Gleason, our cameraman on the interview had to shoot from out in the aisle at NAB which as you might guess is not an optimum place to be at anytime. So please excuse any bounces or sudden position/focus shifts as he was constantly struggling for space. Shot in available light at ISO 640 on a Nikon D7000, GenusTech shoulder rig and Bravo follow focus. Recorded on Zoom H4N and painlessly synched with Dualeyes (Thank you Singular that was a lot of pieces to sync ;-).

The Winner of our 12 Days of Christmas Prize Is…

03 Jan

In the lead up to Christmas this year we ran a 12 Days of Christmas here on dPS where we offered some great photographic deals on our eBooks and some products from other great online photography brands.

As part of that we offered to give one dPS reader who picked up one of the deals a $ 1200 addition to their camera bag. Yes – we’re going to pitch in some money to help one of our readers buy a camera, lens or even a computer for processing photos.

The winner has just been randomly drawn and is….

Charles Cozart.

Charles picked up our Natural Light eBook during the 12 days. We’ve contacted him via email to let him know about his prize. Congrats Charles and thanks to everyone else who participated in our 12 Days of Christmas this year!

Unused CD design concept I had lying around. I’ve highlighted this cover concept in a two part blog post which you can find on my website. I am personally quite satisfied with it so I figured I’d post them up so they don’t go to waste entirely.

This is the The Barber Institute of Fine Arts building on the University of Birmingham main campus.

It is listed currently as being on University Road, and no longer Edgbaston Park Road (I would assume that University Road is the road that goes from Edgbaston Park Road into the University grounds proper).

It is a Grade II listed building built between 1935 and 1939, designed by architect Robert Atkinson.

It is an art gallery and concert hall, and is an Art Deco building. It was opened by Queen Mary.

1935 completed 1939, architect Robert Atkinson. Sophisticated design marrying
elements of traditional institutional classicism with Dudok inspired stone
dressed brick modern. A 2 storey compact block with shallow full height portal
wing to right hand of front. Ashlar faced ground floor and blind lst floor of
brick with flat coped roofline. The horizontal emphasis of the strip
fenestration of the ground floor is suavely combined with the vertical accent of
the slightly battered portal. The latter is complemented in small scale by
ashlar panels carved with symbols of the Arts on the first floor and reflected
by the visual stop of the larger panel at the end of return east elevation.
The banding and strip fenestration of the front follows round on to the side and
rear elevations giving a crisp linear definition to the design.

A torch on the Barber Institute.
