Magic Lantern Guide to Nikon D800/D800E Review

Guide Nikon D800  800ELike many books and movies, if you’ve read the book you’ll want to see the movie.

Similarly, if you own a Nikon D800/D800E you’ll want to read this guide book. Or even more significantly, if you’re thinking about buying one of these cameras, you will definitely want to read this book.

No doubt you’ve already read my review of the remarkable Nikon D800E camera.

Now, about the book ….

Unlike some guide books that I’ve read, this one is all meat and no potatoes, no embellishments, no guff about what a wonderful camera it is, classic lineage etc.

There is however a useful intro to explain the differences between the D800 and D800E models: the only difference being the structure of the filter array covering the image sensor.

Having spent many hours poring over the Nikon manual PDF when reviewing the D800E I wish that I had seen this Magic Lantern guide first!

You get an idea of the book’s helpful approach from the first diagrammatic, explaining the camera controls: clearly laid out, using an image of the camera’s top, sides and rear. Along with explanatory text, the camera pictures and text are close by, so you are not forced (as in the Nikon manual) to thumb through hundreds of pages.

I have rarely found the manufacturer’s original manual to be 100 per cent useful so it’s gratifying to dip into a sample of this book and see how it treats an otherwise mundane function:

‘Mirror up: Locking the reflex mirror into its raised position helps to reduce the vibrations that can often occur, particularly at slow shutter speeds … once the mirror is raised, it is not possible to compose via the viewfinder, and TTL exposure metering and autofocus will not be possible.’

Although the book totals only 128 pages, there is a heap of info within them, although some may find the small six point sans serif type a bit hard to read; it gets even worse when you get to the index at the back of the book where the text shrinks to 5 point type. To be hyper critical, the pictures are also a little on the small side.

But … the info is simply written and leaves no detail unclear. Another extract: ‘Spot metering: This metering pattern is highly specific, as it covers a circle approximately 0.16 inch (4 mm) in diameter.’

For good measure there are helpful paras on peripherals such as memory cards and batteries as well as outlines on the camera’s file formats, JPEG, RAW and TIFF.

An area often skimped in makers’ manuals is the camera’s movie modes; this book answers this criticism by opening the whole subject, clarifying many topics such as shooting stills mid-movie as well as what operational info is displayed in Live View when video recording is under way.

Useful ‘freebies’ are the six quick reference cards tucked into the book’s front and rear covers, carrying concise info on auto focus, setting ISO, flash ranges, sync speeds etc. Slipped into your pocket these would be enormously helpful on a shooting safari where carrying the whole book would be a problem.

Overall, I wish that one brave manufacturer should step out of line and supply a manual such as this with the original camera … and not the pitiful publications normally tucked into the box.

On the other hand, I do feel that the type size in Simon Stafford’s book is far too minuscule. I realise larger type would call for a bigger book or more pages, leading to an increased purchase cost but it would make the book far more accessible and useful.

The Hues and Use of Colour, Part II

In the first installment of the “Hues and Use of Colour” we introduced a discussion on colour, albeit the two colours of black and white. By further exploring the work of Ansel Adams we discovered that black and white is not, well, just black and white, but varying shades of greys between the two extremes.

I also hope your research led you to discover other great masters of the black and white print: Robert Maplethorpe, John Sexton and Edward Weston to name but a few. In your study you should have also witnessed how these world-class photographers were masters in the darkroom. Advanced photographers intimately understand that by controlling one shade of grey they are also effectively complementing the neighbouring tone.

Visual perception of colour may not necessarily be truthful. This is amplified in illustration number one. As you look at the illustration do not over analyse, but ask yourself which circle is actually the whitest? Of course you are going to study the illustration and come to the conclusion that they are all of the same tone, even though the illusion is that the extreme right circle is brightest.

Now look at illustration number two. Again, which is the brightest circle? I think you would agree the right-hand circle is the brighter.

In illustration one, all of the circles are 100% white and the background is shades of grey ranging from 25% black on the extreme left square, through 50% black, 75% black and finally 100% black on the extreme right. With just two basic colours, and varying shades thereof, it is quite easy to see the simultaneous contrast. In illustration two the background square is either 100% white or 100% black, and the circle is 18% grey (+/- 3% to provide for the pattern detail). Simply by adding the pattern to the circle, and dramatically increasing the adjoining background variance in tone we can create an illusion of assimilated contrast. The two circles in illustration two are identical in all aspects.

We can take this exact same theory and apply it to colour photography. Many photographers will use post-production software, such as Photoshop, and saturate a selected colour to increase the “punch” in the image. Based on illustration two principles could we not increase the tonal range of the supporting, or complementary colour to achieve the same result?

But what are complementary colours?

Before we get into a large debate and ongoing dialogue I want you to try a small experiment. The materials are quite simple: Print a full sheet of 8.5 x 11-inch paper as a solid bright royal blue. Have a second sheet of equal sized clear bright white paper at hand. Now, stare at the blue paper for a minute or so and then quickly move your eyes to the white paper. That white paper should show a yellow afterimage. That is because yellow is a complimentary colour to blue. Other complimentary colours are Green and Magenta, and, Red and Cyan.

Now that we have started to think colour and how one colour can complement another, I want you to do a web search looking for some great colour imagery. Look at photographer websites, and their portfolios; a great start would be the work of Pete Turner, a true master of colour.  A couple of other “purveyors of colour” worth more than a cursory glance would be Jay Maisel and Eric Meola.

I raise these great photographers works as I want the novice photographer to get ready for an introduction to the colour wheel in the next installment of “Hues and Use of Colour.” To truly be aware how one colour can affect its neighbour we have to understand the colour wheel and its theories, but not too much as we don’t want to take the fun out of making pictures.

Warped Materials: Unusual Rubber, Wood & Metal Furnitures

The form factors of familiar furniture tend to be rather concrete in our minds. When we think of a chair, we expect it to look like a chair – and likewise for tables, benches, and so forth. But by playing with materials, functionality and appearances, furniture designer Thomas Schnur makes us totally re-think our preconceived ideas about furniture.

End tables and plungers are two household items which are so common they are often overlooked. The Rubber Table combines the two into a completely new and kind of bizarre piece of furniture. It’s a flexible rubber tabletop supported by five small plungers which, when pushed in gently, cause the table to adhere to whatever surface it is on through suction.

The beer bench is a symbol of fun times in Germany and everywhere else in the world with beer tents and summer festivals. Schnur’s High Shelf uses the same type of folding legs to bring a simple open metal cabinet up to a usable height. The resulting pieces allow the festival mindset to persist year-round in a home.

The monobloc chair is said to be the world’s most popular chair. The simple stackable plastic lawn chair can be seen in back yards around the world. Schnur took the monobloc aesthetic and extended it into a surprisingly stylish fiberglass bench. As a tongue-in-cheek nod to the Benchchair’s design inspiration, one side of the bench looks just like the classic monobloc chair.
