DSLR 101 – White Balance
We’re continuing with our DSLR 101 this week and today we’re explaining white balance.
What?
White balance is responsible for keeping your photos the correct temperature. A low colour temperature creates more red, a higher colour temperature more blue. Digital cameras create the correct colour temperature by picking the part of the photo that it thinks should be white and filtering the light to make that area white.
Why?
If you want natural looking photos you need the correct white balance. In other words having the correct white balance prevents your photos from looking too cold (blue) or too warm (red). Although your camera will have an Automatic White Balance (AWB) setting digital cameras are not as good at detecting which part of the photo should be white as you are.
You can get a more accurate white balance by choosing a manual setting for the white balance or creating a custom white balance of your own.
How?
Most DSLRs will let you choose a white balance from within the menu. The choices are likely to include daylight, shade, cloudy/twilight, tungsten, fluorescent light, and flash. Using these setting is a good start and can improve your photos greatly, especially those taken in the more extremes light (such as fluorescent light or twilight).
To get the most accurate white balance you can set a custom white balance. You can buy a grey card from most photography stores to help you do this, or you can find a white object in your shot and use that instead. Fill the viewfinder with the grey card, or the white object, and shoot using manual focus. The exact method of setting this as the white balance varies from camera to camera, you may have to press the white balance button before you take the shot or after. Check the manual of your camera to find out how yours works.
Extra Tip
For most situations AWB or one of the manual settings will do just fine but it’s worth learning how to set the custom white balance, especially if you do a lot of shooting indoors.

Just Posted: Our Samsung NX200 hands-on preview. We’ve been using a pre-production NX200 with a series of NX lenses over the past few days and have put together a hands-on preview with image samples gallery. This provides an opportunity to see some of the output from the camera’s new 20.3MP sensor and also gives an insight into how Samsung’s latest NX body behaves.

PocketWizards firmware brings additional features
Wireless flash control company PocketWizard has updated the firmware of its ControlTL system for both Canon and Nikon products. The update works in the MiniTT1 and FlexTT5 radios for both systems. The upgrade adds features such as Hypersync Automation, which attempts to adjust the timing of flash firing in response to shutter speed changes to maximise the sync speed. There is also a Speedcycler mode that, when used with an AC3 Zonecontroller, fires groups of flashes sequentially so that one group is always ready when shooting bursts of images.

In the Field: Mobile Device Photography – iPad 2?!
The more I travel the more I see people taking photos with mobile devices (cell phones, tablet computers, etc.) Case in point while in Glacier National Park I spied a tourist photographing Logan Pass from a turnout on the Road to the Sun with an iPad 2. It’s very common to see people taking photos with their mobile phones, but the difference in this case is that the iPad 2 has a very weak camera by modern standards. The iPad 2 rear camera has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, which adds up to 0.92 megapixel. By comparison most mobile phones now have resolutions on the order of 3-5 megapixels. I’m not sure this photographer will be very happy with his images when he realizes this. Bummer too as he was from Europe and I’m sure it will be a while before he’s back in Glacier National Park.
Are you seeing an increase in this trend on your trips?

Bing Search Engine – Return More Desirable Search Results by Adding Ignore Words
Tired of web pages containing particular words or phrases appearing in a Bing search? Create search queries that ignore them.
When performing searches with Bing involving words or phrases that have multiple meanings, you might wish to prevent the results from including certain types of pages. Perhaps a word or phrase has a popular meaning but you want pages related to the alternate one.
Another example is searching for a word or phrase that matches the name of a TV show, sports team, movie, etc. These popular culture references may result in pages in which you have no interest. For example, searching for “bones” may show results relating to the TV show, restaurants, a movie, or other non-anatomical subjects….

London Zoo – Dragon

London Zoo – Dragon, originally uploaded by hitkaiser.
Went to London Zoo yesterday and I have to say it was quite enjoyable from a photography point of view.
Today’s photo was taken there and is that of a “Dragon”, apparently its a mean piece of work as it can devore animals much larger than itself (apologies for the deceiving photo, it may appear lizard like but in face it is HUGE – like a crocodile)
[MODIFIED] Mozilla Firefox – Misc – Ask Where to Save Downloaded Files
Stop saving all files downloaded by Mozilla Firefox in the same folder.
Depending on your Mozilla Firefox configuration, when you download files from the Internet they may automatically be placed in a “Downloads” folder.
However, you might find it more convenient for Firefox to ask where to save each downloaded file so that you can place music in one folder, programs in another, and photos in yet another folder. …
