Just Posted: Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E 24mm F1.8 ZA / NEX-7 samples

26 Sep

Just Posted: Sony Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* E 24mm F1.8 ZA preview samples gallery. At the press launch we’ve had a chance to shoot with Sony’s latest E-mount prime lens: the Zeiss-branded 36mm equivalent 24mm F1.8 ZA. We’ve been shooting the lens on a pre-production NEX-7 to show its performance in front of a 24MP sensor. As usual we’ve tried to shoot the lens in a variety of conditions and at a variety of apertures to give an idea about how it behaves.

Google I Love You So Much I’d +1 That

Google

Great news today from Google. They’ve opened up Google+ to everyone. It’s no longer invite only. Along with opening it up to the entire world they finished up eight other new features as well — including SEARCH! :) Danny Sullivan has a great wrap up on the new search feature here.

They also added the ability to broadcast and record hangouts which is super cool as well. I’ve done a number of hangouts and they are a fun way to hang out at the end of the day online with a group of 9 of your friends. Because hangouts only accomodate 10, alot of people were left out and not able to watch them. Now that you can broadcast and record them people who can’t get in can at least still watch.

100 features since launching less than three months ago. AMAZING! Why can’t other sites do this?

I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a team innovate so quickly around a product. It’s refreshing and exciting to see something so innovating going on and it’s been so fun for me being a part of it all as well. I love being able to say that I signed up for Google+ on the first day that it was open as invite only to the public.

I’m especially proud of the vibrant photography community that has emerged out of Google+. So many amazing photographers coming together to share their work visually. I’ve also been so pleased seeing Google embrace and help nurture this new community on their site. Dell and Google+ cosponsored our photowalk this past weekend in Austin and both came through with great prizes for a photo contest. Congratulations btw to our grand prize winner Emma Hollingsworth who took the winning photo with an iPhone! More on that here.

Klout also announced today that they are integrating G+ into their product as well. I hooked mine up a few minutes ago.

I took the above photo of Dave Cohen, Lotus Carroll and Vincent Mo at the Austin City Limits Music Festival this past weekend. It was great to see Google+ out at the festival with a big presence (they even sponsored a stage!). The message was accidental, but I love it.

Are you a photographer not on Google+? What are you waiting for? Sign up today. You can add me to your circle here. :)

Bing Search Engine – Limit Searching to DOC, PDF, PPT, XLS, Other File Types

26 Sep

Force Bing to return not web pages but word processing documents, spreadsheets, presentations, or other types of files.

Instead of searching Bing for web pages, there may be times where you need to find other types of files. Perhaps you are looking for First Aid/CPR presentations, wedding checklists that can be easily printed as PDF files, or amortization tables in the form of Microsoft Excel worksheets.

While performing normal Bing searches may result in other types of files being intermixed with web pages, you can force the results to only contain files of desired types by appending the following to your search query:…

A Morphable Model for the Synthesis of 3D Faces

26 Sep

The Morphable Face Model captures the variations of 3D shape and texture that occur among human faces. It represents each face by a set of model coefficients, and generates new, natural-looking faces from any novel set of coefficients, which is useful in a wide range of applications in computer vision and computer graphics. The Morphable Face Model is derived from a data set of 3D face models by automatically establishing point-to-point correspondence between the examples, and transforming their shapes and textures into a vector space representation. New faces and expressions can be modeled by forming linear combinations of the prototypes. In this framework, it is easy to control complex facial attributes, such as gender, attractiveness, body weight, or facial expressions. Attributes are automatically learned from a set of faces rated by the user, and can then be applied to classify and manipulate new faces. Given a single photograph of a face, we can estimate its 3D shape, its orientation in space and the illumination conditions in the scene. Starting from a rough estimate of size, orientation and illumination, our algorithm optimizes these parameters along with the face’s internal shape and surface colour to find the best match to the input image. The face model extracted from the image can be rotated and manipulated in 3D. Presentation at SIGGRAPH 99, in collaboration with Thomas Vetter

If You Build This Fulgurator-on-the-Cheap, Use it for Good

25 Sep

I totally missed this on DIYPhotography.net until Alim Kassim clued me via Twitter.

A little bit of quick and easy DIY (and ball bungees!) turns an old film camera into a focusing strobe projector. You can actually buy these things for some models of big lights, but they will cost you some serious coin.

I’d probably use one differently than did the photog on DIYP. Like maybe painting numbers or something three-dimensionally onto someone’s face or something. Great idea to keep in the back pocket, tho.

If it looks familiar, it is a simplified version of the “Image Fulgurator” created by photographer Julius von Bismark. But he used his for public mischief…
