Fujifilm announces the X-T30 II and the GFX 50S II

Fujifilm has launched two powerful new mirrorless cameras: the X-T30 II, an incremental upgrade to the popular X-T30, and the GFX 50S II, successor to the GFX 50S.

What do these two cameras offer? Let’s look at each option in turn, starting with:

The new Fujifilm X-T30 II

Fujifilm’s original X-T30 is known for its compact size and retro design, plus its capable stills and video performance for all-around and hybrid shooters. As suggested by its name – the X-T30 II rather than the X-T40 – the new model brings several improvements to its predecessor without a major revamp.

Like the X-T30, the X-T30 II features a powerful 26 MP APS-C sensor, promising excellent image quality in a compact package. Fans of the film aesthetic will appreciate the X-T30 II’s new film simulations, Eterna Bleach Bypass and Classic Neg, which add to the X-T30 II’s retro functionality and give photographers improved in-camera flexibility. 

Speaking of improved flexibility, while the X-T30 focuses in low-light environments of -3 EV, the X-T30 II pushes this to -7 EV – perfect for photographers who frequently shoot at night or in lightless indoor scenarios. And while core autofocus capabilities on the two cameras are identical, Fujifilm guarantees upgraded subject tracking on the X-T30 II, useful for street photography, event photography, and more.

Photographers who frequently compose and/or review images via the LCD screen will appreciate a new display – at 1.62M-dots versus the X-T30’s 1.04M-dots – though the electronic viewfinder remains the same 2.36M-dot resolution. Personally, I find the lack of an EVF upgrade disappointing, but the X-T30/X-T30 II viewfinder display is certainly usable even if it comes up short compared to the competition.

Videography capabilities on the X-T30 II mirror that of its predecessor, with one significant exception: You now get an ultra-slow-motion mode, featuring HD quality at a whopping 240 frames per second for what Fujifilm is billing as “cinematic style results.”

Overall, the X-T30 II upgrades are minor, and if you already own the X-T30, grabbing the X-T30 II makes little sense unless you’re entranced by the -7 EV AF capabilities. That said, for consumers choosing between the X-T30 and the X-T30 II, the higher resolution LCD, improved autofocus, and the slow-motion video mode are worthwhile additions to the newer model, plus the X-T30 II is impressively affordable, even compared to the X-T30 – at just $ 999 USD (including a 15-45mm kit lens), it’s only $ 100 USD more than the X-T30. So if you like the sound of the upgrades and can afford to spend a little extra, the X-T30 II is a great choice.

The new Fujifilm GFX 50S II

Fujifilm is the master of relatively compact, relatively affordable medium format cameras for enthusiasts and professionals, and the GFX 50S II further develops this already formidable lineup, promising outstanding 51 MP image quality, a DSLR-like design, plus a handful of improvements for enterprising photographers.

The GFX 50S II offers 6.5 stops of in-body image stabilization for easy handholding (the original GFX 50S lacked IBIS entirely), plus you can expect upgraded autofocus thanks in part to Fujifilm’s “advanced focus algorithms…found in the GFX 100S and the latest X-Series models.” 

And while the GFX 50S II certainly doesn’t come cheap, its $ 3999 USD price tag is eminently reasonable given the image quality, so if you’ve been eyeing medium format but haven’t managed to take the leap, perhaps now is the time.

Fujifilm’s new camera announcements: final words

The X-T30 II and the GFX 50S II may not be groundbreaking new cameras, but minor upgrades matter, as do low prices.

So if you’re after a do-anything camera with a gorgeous retro design, consider the X-T30 II, which is available for preorder and will begin shipping on October 21st.

And if medium format is your thing, take a look at the GFX 50S II, which will also ship on the 21st of October and is currently available for purchase.

Fujifilm releases major firmware update for X-T30, minor updates for X-T3, 16-80mm F4 lens

Fujifilm has released firmware updates for its X-T30 and X-T3 camera systems, as well as its XF 16–80mm F4 R OIS WR lens. While the updates for the X-T3 and XF 16–80mm F4 are extremely minor, the X-T30 gains a number of much-anticipated features.

Starting out with the smaller updates, firmware version 3.21 for the X-T3 and firmware version 1.03 for the XF 16–80mm F4 both address minor bugs. No specific bugs are mentioned and no other information is given about the updates.

Moving onto firmware version 1.20 for the X-T30, Fujifilm has added a list of new features and functionality. First and foremost, Fujifilm has added improved autofocus performance. According to Fujifilm, the tracking performance of the eye AF frame has been improved, the face-detection has been improved when there are different-sized faces in the same frame and autofocus on foreground subjects has been improved when there is a mix of foreground and background subjects in an image.

Fujifilm has also improved gimbal and drone support when the X-T30 is used with supported rigs over USB. Specifically, firmware version 1.20 adds functions for starting and stopping video recording, adjusting exposure settings for video and adjusting manual focus for video.

Also added is the ability to save up to 9,999 photos into a single folder on an SD card; previously the X-T30 was limited to only 999 shots per folder.

Which is best for you: the Fujifilm X-T200 or X-T30?

Fujifilm X-T200 vs X-T30

Prior to January 23rd, 2020, choosing between Fujifilm’s entry-level X-T100 and its step-up model, the X-T30, was easy. The X-T100 was sluggish, its autofocus sub-par and 4K ‘video’ was limited to 15 fps.

Fujifilm really raised the bar with the X-T200 , which offers dramatically improved performance and autofocus, a massive LCD with a clever touch interface and proper 4K video.

With the X-T200 priced at $ 799 and the X-T30 at $ 999 (both with a 15-45mm kit lens, as of February 2020), potential buyers will want to know if it’s worth spending the extra dollars on the more advanced model.

In this article we’ll break down the similarities and differences between the two cameras – but your decision should come down to the type of photographer you are, and where you are on your photographic journey. The X-T200 is, after all, billed as the more user-friendly model, while the X-T30 gives hands-on photographers more control at their fingertips. Let’s take a closer look.

Sensor

One of the upgrades on the X-T200 is its 24MP sensor. The former had aluminum wiring, while the latter uses copper. Fujifilm says that the new sensor can be read out 3.5x faster than its predecessor, which should reduce rolling shutter. Since we’ve yet to test a production-level X-T200 we can’t comment on its image quality, but we expect it to be better than its predecessor.

The X-T30, on the other hand, uses the same 26MP X-Trans CMOS sensor found on X-T3. Fujifilm’s X-Trans color filter both reduces moiré and exhibits less color noise at high ISOs. The sensor is excellent, with low noise levels at high ISOs and Raw files with plenty of room for brightening shadows and other adjustments. We didn’t find rolling shutter to be a major problem.

Autofocus

The X-T200 has essentially the same AF system as the X-T30, though how you operate them is a bit different. Their shared hybrid AF system has 425 phase-detect points that cover 100% of the frame and offer single-point, zone and wide/tracking AF area modes.

Both cameras offer face and eye detection, and Fujifilm says that the X-T200 has the company’s latest algorithms. It’s too early to draw conclusions about AF performance, but it seems competitive with the X-T30 at first glance.

When it comes to selecting subjects on which to focus, the X-T200 is more touchscreen-based, which isn’t surprising given its target audience. The more experienced users that the X-T30 leans toward will spend more time with the joystick and may want to fine-tune settings more than a beginner.

For example, the X-T30 lets you choose how the camera functions when using continuous AF, either by selecting a preset option or tweaking the settings yourself. This is important when the default AF settings aren’t the right fit for shooting things like sports.

Speaking of action photography, the X-T30 can shoot bursts quite a bit faster than its less-expensive sibling: 20 fps vs 8 fps. It also lets you access playback mode and the menus while the camera is writing to the card, unlike the X-T200.

One very frustrating thing about the AF system on both cameras is that you cannot set the focus point whenever the camera detects a face in the scene, though this could change with firmware sometime down the line (but don’t count on it).

Design

When viewed from the front, the X-T200 and X-T30 look quite similar. The X-T30 has a control dial and AF mode switch on the front, while the X-T200’s control dials are all on the top plate, and there’s no AF mode switch.

The X-T30 is all about dedicated dials, which isn’t surprising, given that it leans in the enthusiast direction. Some may say that it has too many dials, but that’s purely subjective. There are dedicated dials that allow you to adjust exposure compensation, shutter speed and drive mode without ever entering a menu. It offers an 8-way joystick for setting the focus point, which is poorly placed and a bit fiddly, in our opinion (the X-T200 has the same issue).

Being the entry-level model, the X-T200 has a limited number of direct controls and leans heavily on a well-designed touch interface via its enormous fully articulating LCD. The camera still offers dual control dials and some customization, though not nearly to the extent of the X-T30.

Given the price difference, it shouldn’t come as a huge surprise that the build quality of the X-T30 feels superior in your hand, with more metal and less plastic. The X-T30 isn’t weather-sealed, though: you need to go up another step to the X-T3 for that.

Both cameras offer USB Type-C ports (with USB 3.1 speeds) and support in-camera charging. They also use the NP-W126S battery, which you’ll find on many other Fujifilm cameras. While battery life is a reasonable 380 shots per charge on the X-T30 using the LCD, the X-T200 will last for only 270 shots (according to CIPA methodology). In reality you’ll get more life out of both cameras, but the X-T30 should still come out on top.

LCD and EVF

Let’s not beat around the bush: the X-T200’s touchscreen display is fantastic and competitive with modern smartphones – this camera’s target audience. It’s 3.5″ in size (diagonally) and has 2.76 million dots worth of resolution. It’s fully articulating, making it good for ground-level photos as well as vlogging. The display’s 16:9 aspect ratio makes it ideal for video, though a lot of its real estate is wasted when shooting 3:2 stills.

Fujifilm put an easy-to-use touch interface on the X-T200, which makes it operate more like a smartphone than a camera. If you’re a beginner, you can adjust a ‘depth control’ slider to blur the background. If you’re more experienced, the camera has the usual manual exposure options and two control dials to adjust settings. Customization options are limited, but then again, this is an entry-level camera.

The X-T30’s 3″ display is more conventional. It has 1.04 million dots and can tilt upward by a little over 90° and downward by 45°. While it has the usual tap-to-focus and image playback touch functions, there’s no simple interface and only the Q.Menu can be navigated by touch (the X-T200 can do that as well as the main menu).

The two cameras have the exact same electronic viewfinder. They’re both OLED and have 2.36 million dots and a magnification of 0.62x, which is a bit on the small side.

Fun with Film Simulation modes

A feature that makes Fujifilm cameras stand out from the pack are its Film Simulation modes. These aren’t ‘pop color’ filters; most are recreations of film stocks that were available in the days of analog photography.

The Film Simulation modes on the two cameras are largely the same, though the cheaper X-T200 does miss out on a few favorites: Acros and Eterna. Eterna is popular with video shooters, as it produces pleasing footage with low saturation that’s easier to grade in post-production. The X-T30 also has the ability to add a film grain effect. We think it’s a (very) safe bet that the X-T200 lacks these features for product segmentation.

Fujifilm came up with a clever way of selecting a Film Simulation mode on the X-T200. When you turn the left-most dial on the top plate, it opens up a screen with the current Film Sim mode on one side and the other options on the right. A slider lets you expand or contract the viewing area of the before or after sides. This feature is much easier to show rather than explain, so have a look at the video below (from the X-A7) to see how it works.

Video

The X-T200 is no slouch when it comes to video, but if you’re a serious videophile who wants to take more control over their camera, then the X-T30 is the better choice.

First, here’s what the X-T200 offers. It can capture UHD 4K footage at 30p, 24p and 23.98p, as well as their PAL equivalents. The footage is oversampled and uncropped, though there is a 15 minute recording time limit. The X-T200 offers a ‘Digital Gimbal’ feature for reducing large mounts of shake, plus an HDR video mode. It doesn’t offer F-Log support like the X-T30, but that’s not exactly a point-and-shoot kind of feature. It has both 3.5mm mic and headphone sockets (the latter requires an included adapter) and a good number of controls over audio levels.

The X-T30 also records 4K/30p video, but supports the wider DCI 4K format in addition to UHD. It offers selectable bit rates of up to 200Mbps, while the X-T200 is fixed at 100Mbps. The 4K recording limit is less than that of the X-T200: 10 minutes.

There are considerably more video capture aids on the X-T30 if you’re getting more hands-on. It offers zebra stripes, time code support and tools for making focusing easier. The camera supports F-Log and can also output 10-bit 4:2:2 video to an external recorder while saving 4:2:0 8-bit footage to its memory card. A ‘movie silent control’ option allows you to use the touchscreen to adjust exposure while recording, so sound from the control dials is not picked up.

Like the X-T200, the X-T30 has an input for an external mic, but it’s 2.5mm and will require an adapter. Speaking of which, you can attach headphones via the USB port with an adapter that’s not included.

Wrap-up

The two most significant factors which differentiate the X-T200 and X-T30 the most are their physical controls and video capture tools. Thus, whether it’s worth spending the extra $ 200 on the X-T30 comes down to how much control you want over the camera, and how hardcore of a video shooter you are.

If you want a simpler, more smartphone-like shooting experience, then the X-T200 is the smarter choice. The 3.5″ display is the best in this price range (and above it), and the touch-based interface is easy to use. The X-T200’s updated sensor and autofocus system should perform well, and we expect that its oversampled, un-cropped 4K video will look very good. The built-in mic and headphone (via USB-C) connectors are a big plus. The camera’s main downside is its battery life, which is below average.

For those who want to take more control over their camera, the X-T30 is the better of the two. It has several dials for controlling exposure and is highly customizable. It also uses Fujifilm’s newest sensor, which we’ve found to be excellent. Like the X-T200, it captures un-cropped 4K video, and offers the wider DCI aspect ratio, F-Log, zebra stripes, and 10-bit 4:2:2 output with simultaneous internal recording. Its battery life is quite a bit better than the X-T200’s, as well.

Overall, we think that the X-T200 is a great option for more novice users, and they can put that $ 200 savings into a lens like the new XC 35mm F2. But if you’re already a photographer and looking to get a new camera, the level of control the X-T30 gives you really does make a difference, and you’ll enjoy the camera that much more for it.

Fujifilm announces upcoming firmware updates for X-T3, X-T30 and other models

Fujifilm has announced plans to release future firmware updates for its X-T3 mirrorless camera. The first update to version 3.10 will arrive in mid-December, according to a release from the company published on Wednesday.

The update scheduled for release in mid-December will bring ‘controls for video recording from Gimbal / Drone via USB communications,’ according to Fujifilm, meaning X-T3 owners will be able to use their camera with a drone and gimbal setup that supports the function. This same functionality will also be released for the X-T30 and other models not specified at this time.

The firmware version 3.20 update is scheduled for release in January 2020 and will bring ‘enhanced autofocus’ with better eye AF frame tracking and face-detection performance, as well as improved autofocus when it comes to foreground subjects. Additionally, versiohn 3.20 will add support for saving up to 9,999 images in each folder on the SD card, a dramatic increase from the current 999 limit.

We’ve updated a trio of buying guides, adding our final thoughts about the Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30, along with our initial impressions of Canon’s EOS Rebel SL3 (EOS 250D).

While neither the a6400 or X-T30 came out on top in the guides below, we think they’re both well worth considering. Since the SL3 is yet to be reviewed, it’s not eligible for an award.

Sony a6400 vs Fujifilm X-T30: Which is best for you?

Introduction

The Sony a6400 and Fujifilm X-T30 are the two company’s mid-priced mirrorless cameras. They’re 4K-capable cameras with similar resolution APS-C sensors: 24MP on the Sony, 26MP on the Fujifilm.

Both build on the legacies of Gold Award-winning predecessors, which helps establish them as presumed big hitters. And, having tested both cameras extensively, this is a fair assumption: they’re both class-leading cameras. Chris and Jordan from DPReview TV have already looked at their various strengths and weaknesses, so we’re going to look at how they compare for different types of photography.

Spec comparison

From a specs point of view the a6400 and X-T30 look pretty similar: they’re both 4K-capable APS-C mirrorless cameras with very similar price tags. Both cameras offer similar resolution (24MP on the Sony, 26MP on the Fujifilm), both have 2.36M-dot viewfinders and both can shoot at an impressive frame rate 11 fps with autofocus on the Sony, 20 or 8 fps on the Fujifilm (depending on whether you’re in a situation that allows the use of electronic shutter).

And yet, the moment you pick them up, it becomes apparent that they’re very different creatures. Differences in performance and radically distinct design philosophies mean picking between the two becomes much more complex than simply ‘which feels more comfortable’ or ‘which has the lenses that I need?’

Handling comparison

The difference in design philosophy is immediately apparent just by looking at them: the Fujifilm is studded (perhaps overwhelmed) with direct control points, including a mixture of dedicated dials and customizable function wheels. By contrast, the Sony has fewer buttons and only the two control dials, which point to a camera that doesn’t invite (or, perhaps, require) such a degree of engagement with its settings.

Conversely, the Sony has the more complex menu system, with vast numbers of options lodged in a structure that relies on user memory more than most (though, once configured, your need to delve into the menus can be minimized). The Fujifilm’s menus are crowded but they’re better laid-out and have more indication of where each setting is likely to be found. Both have customizable ‘My Menu’ tabs if you find yourself needing regular access to menu-only options.

The other major difference is in autofocus. Not so much in terms of performance (though the Sony is, as good or better across the board), but in terms of complexity and usability. The Fujifilm has a series of different AF modes that you’re likely to swap between, depending on what you’re trying to shoot, and the choice of using the AF joystick or touchscreen to choose a subject. The Sony also has a wide range of AF area modes but, for most shooting situations, can be left in one mode, pointed at your subject and trusted to follow it, requiring little user input or mode-changing.

Other contenders

The most direct video/stills competitor to the Sony/Fujifilm duo is probably the Panasonic Lumix DC-G95 (G90 or G91 outside North America). It’s also a 4K-capable stills/video camera, but one that brings an image-stabilized 20MP Four Thirds sensor to the table, rather than the unstabilized APS-C chips of the other two. We wouldn’t rule it out just yet, but our initial impressions are that its video and autofocus aren’t up to the same high standards as the pair we’re discussing here.

Canon appears to have retreated from this section of the market for now: it’s more enthusiast-friendly M5 and M6 models now looking rather long in the tooth and lacking 4K video. Olympus’s OM-D E-M10 III is a less-expensive alternative and lacks the AF performance of the more recent APS-C models.

Sports and wildlife

Sports and wildlife is a relatively comfortable win for the Sony. The Fujifilm’s AF system is more than up to the job of shooting sports (especially if you tune the AF behavior, manually follow the action and keep your subject under a Zone AF region), but the Sony system does well without the need for so much intervention, and is especially good at subject tracking.

Lens choice may be the deciding factor here. Both systems offer fairly expensive 100-400mm F4.5-5.6 lenses if you need a lot of reach, but Fujifilm’s APS-C-only version is both smaller and less expensive. Fujifilm offers a 50-140mm F2.8 zoom whose 70-200mm F4-like equivalent behavior is arguably more useful than Sony’s similarly-sized 70-200mm F4 (which ends up behaving more like a full-frame 105-400mm F6 if you mount it on the a6400).

Family and moments

The Sony is the clear winner here, primarily for how easy its autofocus is to use and how well it understands human subjects (focusing on an eye if it can see one, but reliably keeping focus on the same person if they look or turn away). The tenacity with which the a6400 will maintains focus on the person you’ve chosen is simply unequaled.

The Fujifilm still makes a handy family camera, though. It requires a little more patience and more user input, but can be paired with lenses such as the 18-55mm F2.8-4.0 OIS, which is a much better and more flexible zoom than the Sony 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 power zoom.

Both systems include the option of 18-135mm lenses, which provide huge amounts of flexibility, though their F3.5-5.6 maximum apertures may not give the shallow depth-of-field or low light advantages over using a good smartphone. Of course, if you don’t regularly zoom-in on your smartphone, it’s worth looking at the available prime lenses for both systems.

Landscape

There’s not a huge amount to choose between the two cameras in terms of landscape shooting. The Fujifilm lens lineup includes a series of nice zooms and a good choice of high-quality F1.4 prime lenses, which might just tip the balance in its favor.

They’re fairly evenly balanced in terms of battery life and portability, and both have rear screens that tilt up for tripod use. There’s not much to choose between the cameras in terms of Raw performance: not all Raw converters do a great job with Fujifilm’s X-Trans sensor pattern, but conversely Sony insists on applying damaging compression to its files, which slightly reduces their flexibility.

Neither camera is especially easy to operate with gloves, though if you deactivated the command dials, the Fujifilm’s dedicated shutter speed, aperture and exposure comp dials are easier to use than the Sony’s rear dial, which is fiddly at the best of times.

Lifestyle and social

The Fujifilm’s attractive JPEG output and selection of lenses makes it a very credible choice for lifestyle and social photography. It has face and eye detection and can offer shallow depth-of-field images if you pair it with the right lens. A wide selection of prime lenses (with a choice of F2 or F1.4 in several focal lengths), makes this pairing easier.

The Sony comes out in front, for us, though, especially on the ‘social’ side of things. Its AF system is more responsive and easier to use when trying to shoot spontaneous photos, particularly of photos with people in them. Added to this, Sigma’s trio of F1.4 lenses may well include a focal length that works for your style of photography.

With its screen that flips all the way up, the Sony is also the clear winner if you want to take selfies.

Formal portraits

When it comes to posed portraiture, again it’s probably a slight win to the Sony. Its uncannily sticky eye-detection system can be entirely relied upon, freeing up the photographer to concentrate on their lighting, their composition and engaging with their subject. Stick the comparatively affordable Sigma 56mm F1.4 on the front and the camera will do much of the rest.

It’s only a slight win, though. Fujifilm’s 56mm F1.2 APD is a lovely portrait lens, as is its 135mm-equiv. 90mm F2 (though neither comes cheap). Eye detection works well, especially with a single subject and the X-T30’s choice of film-mimicking color modes makes it easy to deliver attractive results.

Sony has stronger native flash options, with a radio-frequency remote flash system, but both are well supported by third-party makers, making it easy to find flash heads that can be remotely triggered.

Both the Sony and Fujifilm are pretty small cameras, and can be paired with fairly small lenses (though it’s worth checking whether there’s a small prime lens available in your favored focal length). Both have rear touchscreens that tilt upwards for from-the-hip shooting and both have relatively quiet shutter mechanisms. They both offer completely silent electronic shutter modes, with the Fujifilm exhibiting less rolling shutter distortion in that mode.

Both cameras make it pretty simple to transfer your images to a smartphone, with the Sony offering NFC in addition to Bluetooth, which makes it a little quicker to use with Android devices.

Again the Sony’s simpler, more precise AF system may give it a bit of an edge, particularly for candid people pics. It’s also a little smaller and more discreet.

Video

The Sony a6300 was one of the first sub-$ 1000 cameras to offer really detailed 4K capture, but video performance (and our expectations of it) have been one of the areas of greatest improvement since then. It’s much easier to spot the rather poor rolling shutter performance now that a range of cameras can offer the level of detail capture that once rather dazzled us.

Fujifilm matches the Sony for detail capture but with much less rolling shutter and no crop (as the a6400 does when shooting 30p). And that’s before you consider the Fujifilm’s array of attractive and useful Film Simulation modes (including the flexible Eterna mode and the option of Log capture with a downloadable LUT to make processing easier). Unlike the Sony, the Fujifilm can offer headphone monitoring via a USB-C adapter.

The a6400’s video is easier to point-and-shoot: again thanks to its impressive tap-to-track autofocus, though the X-T30 can track human subjects fairly well. The Fujifilm is the better video tool overall, if you’re serious about videography and are willing to manual focus. There’s even the option to output 10-bit footage if you get serious enough to buy an external recorder.

Conclusion

Looking at these two cameras through the lens of specific photographic applications is an interesting exercise, with the importance of the simplicity and reliability of the a6400’s AF system shining through (when assessing them in general terms we concluded there wasn’t a lot to choose between them).

The a6400’s updated AF system is genuinely phenomenal

We’re still not big fans of the experience of shooting with the Sony: its two command dials are undermined by the need to stop and adjust your grip every time you want to use the lower one. Its menus are still difficult to navigate and its touchscreen is poorly utilized. That said, its updated AF system is genuinely phenomenal, removing, at a stroke, one of the things you previously would have had to mess around with. If your photography benefits from fast, precise focus (particularly for human subjects), the Sony is the stronger choice.

Both these cameras are significantly better than the already good cameras they replace, so there’s no wrong choice here

We still really like the X-T30, though. It looks pretty, is engaging to use and produces attractive JPEGs and consistently better video than the Sony. It’s not without its own usability flaws: the joystick and Q buttons are awkwardly placed and the pressable command dials are fiddly and easily knocked. Overall there are arguably too many control points for such a small camera, but it’s a camera that can be set up to be really enjoyable to use.

Both these cameras are significantly better than the already good cameras they replace, so there’s no wrong choice here. So which is more important to you: the experience of photography or the certainty of getting the shot?

New Fujifilm X-T30 firmware aims to reduce Q.Menu button sensitivity

Fujifilm has released a firmware update for its midrange X-T30 mirrorless camera. It aims to reduce the likelihood of accidentally pressing the Q.Menu button which, as we pointed out in our review, is one of the most frustrating things about an otherwise-great camera. Fujifilm says that the update makes the button slower to reaction to being pressed, thereby reducing the likelihood of accidentally opening the Q.Menu.

An additional update coming in June will allow you to redefine the function of the Q.Menu button, or disable it entirely.

We’ve installed the new firmware on our X-T30 to see how well it works at reducing accidental button-pressing, and will update our review as needed.

The firmware update Ver.1.01 from Ver.1.00 incorporates the following issue:

  • 1.Improved operability of the Q (quick menu) button
    To avoid accidentally opening the Q (quick) menu, the button reaction time has been increased.
    • *FUJIFILM Corporation plans an additional firmware update in June. This will allow customers to use the Q button as a Fn button. This planned update also allows the user to disable the Q button and adds it as a choice in the Function (Fn) Settings enabling the option to assign it to a different Fn button.

Fujifilm’s X-T30 brings the same 26MP sensor, processor and much of the feature set of the high-end X-T3 at a more reasonable price. If that sounds familiar, it’s because the relationship between the X-T20 and X-T2 was the same.

With the X-T30 you get Fujifilm’s latest AF system, along with plenty of direct controls and a tilting touchscreen, all in a smaller body. The X-T30 also comes at a significantly lower price than the X-T3, with the body priced at $ 899, versus $ 1499 for the X-T3. We’ll discuss what features were cut in order to make the X-T30 the less expensive of the two options a bit later in the review.

If you’d like to add a lens, you can get the camera and the 15-45mm F3.5-5.6 OIS Power Zoom lens for $ 999, or with the excellent 18-55 F2.8-4 lens for $ 1299. The camera is available in silver, black and the graphite silver version shown in this review.

The X-T30 borrows the sensor and processor from the more expensive X-T3, and that’s great news.
