Canon EOS-1D X Mark II firmware updated to version 1.1.3

16 Feb

Canon has released firmware version 1.1.3 for the Canon EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR. The latest firmware version is a relatively small update, bringing a bug fix that corrects an issue displaying the drive mode icon, as well as improving USB communication reliability with a function in EOS Utility 3 and increasing the maximum ‘release cycles’ number displayed in the ‘Camera system information’ menu.

The latest firmware is available to download for macOS and Windows via Canon’s support website.  The full change log is below.

Changes in the Firmware

Firmware Version 1.1.3 incorporates the following improvements to enhance functions.

  • Corrects a phenomenon in which the drive mode icon is not correctly displayed when using custom shooting modes (C1/C2/C3).
  • Changes the maximum number of “Release cycles” displayed from 1,000,000 cycles to 9,999,000 cycles. This value can be checked under the “Camera system information” menu.
  • Improves the reliability of communication via USB cable when using the Lens Data Registration function within EOS Utility 3 software.

The Version 1.1.3 firmware being released at this time is for cameras with Firmware Version 1.1.2 or earlier. If the camera’s firmware is already Version 1.1.3, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

When updating the firmware of your camera, please first go over the instructions thoroughly before you download the firmware. The firmware update takes approximately six minutes.

Note:

  • (1) Once the EOS-1D X Mark II is updated to Version 1.1.2 (or later), it cannot be restored to a previous firmware version (Version 1.0.0 to 1.0.2).
  • (2) Camera settings files created using a camera running Firmware Version 1.0.2 (or earlier) cannot be used on a camera running Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later).
  • (3) Please use the latest EOS Utility version with the EOS-1D X Mark II after the camera has been updated to Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later). The latest version of EOS Utility can be downloaded from Canon’s Web site.
  • (4) Accompanying functional improvements of Firmware Version 1.1.2 (or later), the instructional manual has been revised. The latest version of the instruction manual can be downloaded from Canon’s Web site, so please download the instruction manual together with the new firmware.

Camera+ updated for dual-cam compatibility and Raw

16 Dec

Camera+, one of the most popular camera apps for Apple’s iPhone, has received a major overhaul and version 9 now supports some of the new features that were introduced with the latest iPhone 7 generation and iOS 10. With Camera+  9 you can now use the iPhone 7 Plus dual-camera, and Camera+ will let you choose how the system behaves in low light. You can either force it to use the longer lens with its slower F2.8 aperture, or operate in the same way as Apple’s stock camera app and digitally zoom the wide-angle lens when light levels go below a certain threshold.

Raw support is another new addition. If you are using Camera+ on an iPhone 6s, 6s Plus, SE, 7, or 7 Plus, you can now save your images in the DNG Raw format. Those files can then be converted to JPEG using the new RAW Lab suite of editing tools.

Finally, some of the control elements, for example the control wheels, now provide haptic feedback. As far as we know, this makes Camera+ the only camera app to offer this feature. If this update sounds appealing, you can download the app now from the App Store for $ 2.99.

Zeiss has announced a new ‘Edge’ bracket that brings iPhone 7 family support to the maker’s ExoLens PRO with Optics by Zeiss smartphone lenses. The bracket features half a dozen device inlays that support both the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 6 phones, as well as a cold shoe mount for attaching secondary accessories such as lighting instruments.

According to Zeiss, a bracket specifically for the iPhone 7 and the ExoLens optics is available now from camera stores, as well as a wide-angle ‘accessory lens.’ The Edge bracket, meanwhile, will be available at camera stores starting in the end of January. The company recommends that iPhone 7 Plus owners use either the ExoLens PRO Macro-Zoom or Wide-Angle lenses since the device already offers a 2x telephoto camera, however, all of the lenses are said to be ‘generally compatible.’

The iPhone 7 bracket is available now for $ 59.95 / €64.95, and the Edge bracket will be available starting next month for $ 49.95 / €59.95. The Wide-Angle lens recommended for the iPhone 7 Plus is $ 149.95 / €179.95, and the Macro-Zoom lens is $ 149.95 / €179.95.

Adobe Lightroom for iOS updated with iPhone 7 camera profiles

01 Oct

With iOS 10.1, currently available in beta, the new iPhone 7 and 7 Plus are capable of recording Raw image files. Adobe has now updated its Lightroom app for iOS to take advantage of this new feature. The capability to shoot Raw images with all Apple devices with 12MP camera had already been implemented in version 2.5 of the app, but the latest version  v2.5.2 now also comes with lens and sensor profiles for both new iPhones, including specific optimizations for the dual-camera of the 7 Plus.

These should ensure color, noise reduction, lens corrections and other parameters are set at the right levels when opening DNG Raw-files that have been captured with one of the new iPhones. In addition, the new version of Lightroom for iOS supports the DCI-P3 wide color gamut display that is also a new feature of the iPhone 7 series. It offers 25 percent more color than the sRGB color space. The latest version of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom can now be downloaded for free from the Apple App Store.

Updated: iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus added to mobile studio scene comparison

30 Sep

When the most popular camera in the world gets a major update, it’s a newsworthy event all around. We’ve put the 12MP iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus cameras in front of our studio test scene to see what they (and their new Raw capture abilities) can do.

$ (document).ready(function() { ImageComparisonWidget({“containerId”:”reviewImageComparisonWidget-55056378″,”widgetId”:405,”initialStateId”:2855}) })

The iPhone 7 Plus includes both wide-angle and telephoto lenses. However, because the telephoto lens is 1.3EV slower, the phone will sometimes use a digitally zoomed shot from its brighter wide-angle lens in low light when in ‘telephoto’ mode.

For this reason we’ve focused on getting the Raw images for the iPhone 7 Plus, to ensure we’re seeing the results from telephoto lens/sensor. It’s reasonable to assume that the wide-angle JPEGs will look the same as those from the iPhone 7.

Please also note that the 7 Plus has also used a much faster shutter speed for its low light telephoto shot, presumably to avoid camera shake on the unstabilized telephoto lens/camera.
