This SkyPixel 2017 photo contest winner wasn’t shot from a drone… or in 2017

Drone maker DJI announced the winners of the 2017 SkyPixel aerial photography competition earlier this month, but already there’s a controversy. As it turns out, the winner of the Landscapes category wasn’t actually taken with a drone or captured in 2017.

The contest rules required entries to have been taken in 2017 using “any aerial platform,” but a recent report from PetaPixel reveals that the winning image in the Landscape category, “Sun’s Up, Nets Out” by Zay Yar Lin, was actually taken in 2014 using a Nikon D750 from an elevated bamboo stage… probably not what they meant by ‘aerial platform.’

In fact, the photograph—which has since been disqualified—was previously submitted to the NatGeo 2015 Traveler Photo Contest as well as the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards, and was a ‘top entry’ in the Amateur Photographer of the Year 2016 contest. Zay’s award bundle for the SkyPixel 2017 contest included a Nikon D850 and DJI Phantom 4 Pro Obsidian drone.

In a statement to PetaPixel, Zay Yar Lin explained that his D750 was attached to a hexacopter on said bamboo stage when this photo was shot, but that he didn’t realize the photo had to be taken in 2017. His statement reads:

I regret that I had shot with my DSLR with hexacopter on the bamboo stage to get the best angle. But to be honest, I wasn’t aware of the Photo Contest rules that all photos should have been shot in 2017. I’m a freelance and ethical photographer in the contests. Please look up my profile in any site. I really regret misunderstanding had occurred between us.

Zay didn’t mention the attached hexacopter when he spoke with Amateur Photographer about this image in 2016.

Wacom releases 24-inch 4K Cintiq Pro pen display, 32-inch coming ‘later this year’

Wacom has officially released the Cintiq Pro 24—a 4K 24-inch version of its popular Cintiq Pro Creative Pen Display for use with both Windows and Mac computers. The 32-inch version remains in-development, with an official release “slated for later this year.”

Wacom first announced its Cintiq Pro 24- and 32-inch tablets back in July of last year, but that announcement was more of a teaser than anything else. At the time, Wacom only shared that the pen displays would have “4K edge-to-edge displays” and “maximum color accuracy.” Now, with the official release of the Cintiq Pro 24, we have a lot more details to share.

The Cintiq Pro 24—which will be available in both Pen and Pen & Touch models—boasts an IPS UHD display with 4K (3840 x 2160) resolution, 98% Adobe RGB color accuracy (the store page claims 99%), and “a billion colors” (translation: 10-bit color). The tablet also features an etched glass surface to reduce glare and provide a “natural, pen on paper feel,” parallax reduction through “optical bonding,” close to zero latency, and support for the Pro Pen 2, which features 8,192 levels of sensitivity.

Finally, for those who want to take their Cintiq Pro 24 to the next level, Wacom also introduced the Cintiq Pro Engine. This plug-and-play PC module—which we covered in detail here—turns the Cintiq Pro 24 into a full-blown Windows 10 workstation with Intel processor, up to 32GB of RAM, NVIDIA graphics, and an SSD.

The Cintiq Pro Engine costs at least as much as the Cintiq Pro 24 itself, but the SSD and RAM inside are both upgradable, and its plug-and-play nature means you can swap your entire workstation from display to display as needed. If you’re looking for a single, portable solution… it’s an intriguing option to be sure

The Cintiq Pro 24 will be available in two variations: the $ 2,000 Pen Display version will start shipping in March, but if you want the $ 2,500 Pen & Touch version, you’ll have to wait until May. The Cintiq Pro Engine PC module also ships in May.

This strange gadget literally shocks you into taking ‘better’ photos

A new project called Prosthetic Photographer involves a very real gadget designed to zap humans into taking better images. The system was created by artist and designer Peter Buczkowski, and it works with both DSLR and mirrorless cameras. Using artificial intelligence, the device constantly scans for ‘ideal’ scenes and uses mild electric shocks to force/train the photographer to capture them.

“The Prosthetic Photographer enables anybody to unwillingly take beautiful pictures,” Buczkowski explains on the project’s website. The gadget is a way for an AI to train a human, though the AI itself was first trained using a dataset containing 17,000 images, and those images were captured and rated by humans.

Using what it learned about quality photos, the Prosthetic Photographer AI identifies scenes worth capturing and trains the human behind the camera to recognize them. To do this, the AI triggers a small electric shock delivered through electrodes on the handgrip, which forces the photographer’s finger to press a button and capture said ideal scene.

As demonstrated in the video at the top of this post, users can adjust the shock strength using knobs on the back of the device. “This system is part of a new aesthetic, based on computer-generated decisions that were taught by previous human skill,” Buczkowski explains on his site. “The conscious skill of photography becomes obsolete this way.”

The resulting images feature the AI’s own aesthetic tastes, which are based on the images used to train the system. Of course, some of the scenes captured by the human who is being ‘trained’ are often… less than striking.

Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall ‘firefall’ event will require a vehicle permit this year

For two weeks every February, Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall appears to be composed of flowing lava rather than water when illuminated by the setting sun. This beautiful illusion is referred to as a “firefall,” and it draws a large number of visitors who want to witness it in person. Due to the expanding size of these crowds, officials have announced that visitors (including photographers) will need to get a vehicle permit.

The permit requirement is an effort to deal with traffic issues and visitor safety, according to ABC7, which reports that officials are working with Yosemite Hospitality, Yosemite Conservancy, and the Ansel Adams Gallery on the matter. Details for the upcoming event are available on Event Brite where free reservations can be made.

According to the event page, Yosemite visitors planning to arrive via vehicle will need a permit to access Northside Drive between Yosemite Valley Lodge and El Capitan Crossover. Northside Drive will be closed to those without a permit from February 12th to February 26th.

A total of 250 parking permits are being offered for reservation on the Event Brite site.

The reservation requires visitors to provide vehicular information, including license plate, car make and model, and car color. Those who successfully reserve a spot will then need to pick up their permit from The Ansel Adams Gallery on the day of the reservation. Additionally, 50 or more first-come, first-serve permits will be offered at the gallery until 3PM each day.

According to the event page, in addition to getting a vehicle permit for the designation part of Northside Drive, visitors who want to see the firefall can either take a Yosemite Hospitality guided tour or hike to the viewpoints.

This video shows that everyone takes the exact same Instagram travel photos

After reading our recent coverage on Instagrammers hurting an iconic tree in New Zealand just to snap the same photo everyone else has already taken, photographer and videographer Oliver KMIA decided to put together a short video with a single, tongue-in-cheek purpose:

I wanted to show how people take the same picture over and over again while traveling.

The result is Instatravel, a video slideshow made out of thousands of Instagram travel photos that look pretty much identical. All of the typical tropes are covered: the passport photo, the pretty girl leading you by the hand, the airplane wing, and all of the most iconic landmarks being photographed from the same old locations in the exact same way.

We can’t decide if the video is funny or depressing, so we’ll let you do that. Alternatively, this is probably a good video to reference the next time you find yourself tempted to take one of these cliché travel shots. We’ve all done it, but a few seconds of hesitation might just yield something a bit more unique.

Behind the scenes: The story behind this volcanic eruption wedding photo

Photojournalist Jack Kurtz was in the Philippines covering the eruption of the Mayon volcano for ZUMA Press this past month, but the photo that’s gotten him the most attention wasn’t one of his press shots. Instead, it’s this serendipitous wedding photo that has spread across the Web like wildfire—a once- or twice-in-a-lifetime kind of photograph that captures the power of nature as a backdrop to the human experience.

The story behind this shot is simply about being in the right place, at the right time, with the right attitude.

Kurtz tells DPReview he arrived in the Philippines on Saturday, January 20th and proceeded to spend most of the week capturing photos for his agency—mostly “photographing people in evacuation centers and the volcano when it was erupting.” But after five intense days of photography, he needed a break, so he took Thursday as a “personal day.”

“I needed to run some errands and since the volcano was quiet it seemed a good day to do that,” says Kurtz. “I finished my errands about 4:30 in the afternoon and decided to go to a church a few kilometers away to try to make a sunset photo of the volcano erupting.”

The volcano had been quiet all day that Thursday, so it was a risk, but as Kurtz told us: “nothing ventured nothing gained, and off to the church I went.”

When he got to the church, there was no sign of an eruption and clouds were obscuring the cone, but he decided to wait and was rewarded for his patience. In his own words:

As it got later, the clouds drifted off and smoke started to puff its way out of the cone, signaling a likely eruption. All good signs. I set up my small table top tripod on a flat rock, made a couple of test pictures with my Pen F and iPhone controlling the camera with the Olympus OI Share app. Everything was working so I sat down and waited.

While I was sitting there, a couple who had just been married in the church came out to a restaurant next to the parking lot to make their wedding photos. Just as they got to the overlook, the volcano started its eruption. I grabbed my gear and ran over to the restaurant to photograph them.

Before I started photographing, I introduced myself to their wedding photographer and asked if I could make some pictures (I think it would have been rude of me to butt in on his job) and he said okay. I started photographing the couple. During a break, I talked to the couple. I told them who I was and asked if I could put the photos on the wire. They said it was fine. Then I went back to photographing.

A few minutes later, they finished up, everybody thanked everyone else, and Kurtz went back to his spot in the parking lot to set up the exposure that would yield the photograph below.

Speaking with DPReview about the technical details behind the photographs, he says the wedding photo was made with his Olympus Pen F and 17mm F1.8 lens at ISO 400, F4, and 1/30. Color balance was set to daylight, and the photo was later edited in Lightroom 6 to straighten the horizon and adjust the color balance (“Because of the time of day and light, the skintones were a little warm, so I knocked the color temp down a little.”)

The eruption photo above was also shot on the Pen F, this time with a 25mm F1.8 lens at ISO 200, F4.5, and 85 seconds. The camera was set on a small tabletop tripod and controlled by the OI Share app on Kurtz’ iPhone. It, too, was edited in Lightroom 6.

This video explains the science behind how camera drones fly

The folks at WIRED have put together a great video for the science nerds among us—and I do have a feeling there are a few. The video, which is part of WIRED’s Dot Physics series, explains the physics behind drone flight; in other words: how that new DJI Mavic Air and quadcopters like it are able to hover, move in three dimensions, and rotate all by changing the speed at which various propellers spin.

This explains why your quadcopter doesn’t need any other sort of physical controls, just four propellers—two spinning clockwise, two spinning counterclockwise—that change the rate at which they spin based on signals from your remote control.

This vlogger is the guy behind last week’s Canon G7 X Mark III hoax

Italian vlogger and designer Breccia, telling his audience to Google Canon G7X Mark III and let him know if they see anything… suspicious.

Last week, much of the photography blogosphere went nuts when a series of “leaked” images purported to show a not-yet-announced Canon G7 X Mark III. The high-res photos immediately spread like wildfire, spurred on to even greater sharability because they seemed to show Canon was planning to put 4K video into the little compact camera.

There’s just one problem: they were 100% fake. And now we can be pretty much certain that the creator of the fake images is Italian vlogger and graphic designer Breccia.

Here are the images Breccia “leaked” to the photography press:

We decided not to share the “leaked” images on DPReview, as several members of the staff pointed out that they looked like digital renders with several unlikely design choices… even the font wasn’t correct. Sure enough, within 24 hours the photos had been outed as fake, not just because of the unlikely design, but because the “photos” on the LCD screen were grabbed from the Royalty Free photo sharing website Unsplash.

But it wasn’t until this morning that Canon Rumors was able to identify Breccia as their creator, pointing to a vlog posted yesterday in which the YouTuber tells his audience to Google “Canon G7X Mark III” and drop him a comment if they see anything “suspicious.” That, by itself, isn’t exactly iron clad proof, but if you look at the fakes themselves, you’ll see he actually signed them:

This isn’t the first time Breccia has pulled a fake “leaked photos” stunt like this. According to CR, he was also behind a Google UltraPixel hoax from September of 2017, and a PS4 Slim hoax before that. The leaks are supposed to showcase his skill as a graphic designer, and possibly earn him some work… even if they do simultaneously earn him the ire of (in this case) hopeful Canon shooters.

This 2018 ‘ecosystem map’ captures the whole photo industry in one massive infographic

Photolemur, the makers of an AI-powered image editor, have put quite some time and effort into creating a comprehensive “Market Map of the Digital Photo Industry” that includes all sorts of brands, manufacturers, publications and other organizations that are involved in the industry in some shape or form.

“The aim of this initiative is to become the gate to the digital photo industry and to help photographers, new companies, VCs, entrepreneurs, journalists, and bloggers to understand who the major players in the world’s digital photo industry are,” writes Photolemur in the accompanying text. “Note that some companies work in more than one segment so we decided to link them only to their primary segment on the map.”

In the map you’ll find anything from camera and lens manufacturers, to Raw image processors, to providers of online education services, all neatly sorted and categorized. The company says it is planning to update the market map over time, adding more entries to existing categories as well as creating entirely new categories.

On the market map website you can contact Photolemur via an email link if you think they’ve missed out an important player in the industry. If you submit your name and email address, you can also download the map as an Excel file or high-resolution PDF.

Red’s Hydrogen One holographic super-phone to ship this summer

Red, best known for its high-end video products, has dripped out some pre-order and release date information about its Hydrogen One super-smartphone, which was announced last July and first demoed IRL in August.

The most notable feature of this phone is its 5.7″ 1440p display, which can display 2D and “better than 3D” holographic images. It can also shoot 3D or 4V (holographic) content using its onboard cameras, and stereo sound is converted to spatial audio when played back. The One uses Qualcomm’s new Snapdragon 835x processor, dual SIM card slots, a monster 4500 mAh battery and support for add-on modules like external batteries and a ‘cinema-grade’ camera.

The new info came via Red’s forums, where the company revealed that pre-orders for the Hydrogen One are expected to begin in April, with ship dates sometime this summer. The aluminum model will be priced at $ 1195, while the titanium version will set you back $ 1595.
