OPPO teases Reno device, shows 10x zoom samples

14 Mar

OPPO has been talking about its 10x periscope smartphone zoom lens for what seems like an eternity but now we are finally seeing some action after all the talk. The Chinese brand will be launching its new OPPO Reno line of devices on the 10th of April and has been teasing some information ahead of the event.

We’ve seen an allegedly official image of the device that shows the triple-camera with 48MP main module and 10 x periscope zoom on the rear posted on the social network Weibo. Other specs are so far largely unknown but it seems there will be models with Snapdragon 710 and 855 chipsets and a large 4,000+ mAh battery.

The company has also posted a number of images combining an image captured with the wide-angle camera with an inlay from the 10x zoom. The images are not full size, so aren’t any useful for judging image detail, but they do give you a pretty good idea of the range of focal lengths that the camera will be covering. And if the samples are anything to go by 2019 might be the year in which the long range smartphone zoom will be taking off.

Xiaomi teases Mi 9 product images and camera samples

15 Feb

We are getting close to the largest annual mobile technology show, the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, and one of the manufacturers expected to launch a new flagship device has already spilled some of its beans.

Xiaomi Senior VP Xiang Wang shared a bunch of press renders of the upcoming Xiaomi Mi 9, showing the triple-camera on the rear of the device in all its glory. The main module will feature a 48MP sensor and the Mi 9 is likely one of the first handsets to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest top-end chipset Snapdragon 855.

Meanwhile another Xiaomi executive, co-founder and director of the Chinese division Chuan Wang posted a few full-size camera samples on his Weibo profile. A low-light shot of some plastic flower, and indoor shot of an aquarium and an outdoor image of three golden labradors all show good color and dynamic range. When zooming in to a 100% view there is a lot of fine detail but also some of the smearing of fine textures that is typical for many smartphone cameras.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_6593769028″,”galleryId”:”6593769028″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

The Xiaomi Mi 9 will be officially launched on February 24. Full specifications and other information about the triple-camera will be available then.

Olympus teases new enthusiast mirrorless camera due in January

03 Jan

Olympus has posted a teaser video for a high-end mirrorless camera that the company plans to launch on January 24th. The video is short – under 20 seconds – and highlights the camera being used at sporting events. It also features everyone’s favorite: a shadowy camera silhouette. Wouldn’t be a teaser video without one, would it?

Scenes in the video suggest that the camera will be rugged enough to stand up to some tricky conditions like a sand volleyball match, a point that’s driven home as the clip closes on the OM-D logo. Take a look for yourself at the video above and let the speculation begin.

Xiaomi co-founder teases 48MP smartphone camera

07 Dec

Earlier this year Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi announced it had established an in-house camera division. Now it seems the initiative is bearing its first fruits.

Xiaomi co-founder and President Lin Bin has teased a smartphone with 48MP camera module on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. The image he posted shows a close-up of a rear camera with a ’48MP camera’ label next to the lens. Bin says he has used the phone for a few weeks and that it will be released in January.

That’s not an awful lot of information, but it means the upcoming Xiaomi phone will feature the highest pixel count ever on a mobile image sensor. Nokia’s 808 PureView juggernaut came with a 41MP sensor and the much more recent Huawei Mate 20 Pro features a 40MP quad Bayer arrangement.

Like the Nokia 808 PureView and Huawei Mate 20 Pro, the unreleased Xiaomi phone is likely to use its pixel count for high-quality digital zooming, pixel-binning for lower noise, and other computational trickery, rather than outputting enormous image files.

The sensor in question could be the Sony IMX586 quad-Bayer model which was announced in July. At 1/2″ it’s large for a mobile sensor, but due to the high pixel-count, individual pixels still only measure 0.8µm. Samsung’s Bright GM1 is another option with very similar specifications.

It’ll be interesting to see if the new Xiaomi will solely rely on the power of the 48MP sensor or add additional sensors, for example for tele, super-wide-angle or black-and-white shooting into the mix. We’ll know more in January.

Yongnuo teases YN450 mirrorless camera with Android, 4G connectivity

01 Nov

Chinese company Yongnuo has revealed plans to launch an Android-based mirrorless camera. The model is being referred to as “YN450,” but Yongnuo is soliciting name suggestions in a new contest on its Facebook Page. The public has until January 2019 to submit their name ideas.

The Yongnuo mirrorless interchangeable lens camera features 4G connectivity and runs on the Android operating system, which is accessible via a touchscreen display that covers the entire back of the camera. PhotoRumors elaborates on the Facebook post, claiming the YN450 camera will feature a memory card, headphone jack, 4000mAh battery, 4K/30fps video recording, support for RAW files, and built-in GPS.

Yongnuo will reveal the model’s final name in January 2019 and send contest winners a YN50mm F1.8C/N YONGNUO lens. As noted by MirrorlessRumors, the January date hints at a possible CES 2019 unveiling, though the company hasn’t confirmed the rumor.

Lenovo teases Z5 Pro smartphone with quad-camera module

10 Oct

You thought smartphone manufacturers would stop at three cameras in a device? Think again. Lenovo has been teasing its upcoming Z5 Pro high-end device with a quad-camera and just confirmed that one of the four cameras will have a 2x telephoto lens.

Four sample images from the telephoto module have been posted on the Chinese social media platform Weibo. Image size has been reduced, so it’s difficult to judge image detail and noise. That said, the samples look pretty promising in terms of dynamic range and color.

$ (document).ready(function() { SampleGalleryV2({“containerId”:”embeddedSampleGallery_9467991784″,”galleryId”:”9467991784″,”isEmbeddedWidget”:true,”selectedImageIndex”:0,”isMobile”:false}) });

What we don’t know at this point is what specification the remaining three cameras will come with. It’s fair to assume one of them will be a regular wide angle. The other two could be a super-wide-angle, monochrome camera, a simple depth-sensor for a simulated bokeh effect or even a longer telephoto than 2x.

Looking at the teaser image above the lenses will be arranged in a square with a flash LED at the center. Non-camera specs are firmly located in high-end territory, with a large 6.5-inch QHD+ screen, Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset, 6/8GB of RAM, 64-256GB of internal storage and a 4,000mAh battery.

The Lenovo Z5 Pro launch date is set for October 16, so we should know everything about the new quad-camera around this time next week.

Skylum teases Luminar DAM module, synchronized edits in new videos

03 Oct

Skylum has released multiple teaser videos revealing aspects of its digital asset manager (DAM) for Luminar. The videos detail the DAM’s speed in a pair of speed tests and edit sync feature in a third.

Last month, Skylum CEO Alex Tsepko stated the Luminar Digital Asset Manager update would be available by the end of 2018. Tsepko likewise confirmed plans to provide the DAM for free to existing Luminar 2018 customers, saying:

We know that hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people are waiting for this update. But mainly because there are so many people who need this tool, we wanted to take just enough time to make everything right.

We promise we will ship the DAM this year. I know it has been a long wait, but we don’t want to ship a product that we would not use ourselves. The new Luminar (with DAM) will bring you great speed and the most incredible user experience available. Your photos will play the main role. Our software aims to get out of the way.

The update will be free for everyone who has Luminar 2018.

In past updates, Skylum indicated that the DAM will take its Luminar product “in a new direction,” bringing with it customized workspaces, a cleaner interface, speedier workflows, and more.

Profoto teases something big that’s small

09 Sep

Lighting manufacturer Profoto is teasing users with a video clip that includes shots of a new light it’s planning to announce later this month. Billing the launch as ‘something big’ for ‘something small’ the company’s new head appears to be compact and portable, and from the description quick to set up and take down again.

It also appears to be a totally new light that is designed specifically to be small. There aren’t too many clues from the frames that are shown, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

The full announcement is promised for 12th September. See the Profoto website for details and to see the video teaser.

Manufacturer’s blog post:

We never comment on new product launches. But this time is different. We want to give you, as a My Profoto member, a preview of what’s to come. One week from now, we’re launching something big globally. And by big, we’re talking figuratively. Because the product itself is not big. In fact, it’s the opposite.

Watch the video video and see if you can catch it.

We know that size matters. Because how much gear you have to carry — matters. How much space you have to set up and work in — matters. Being able to move fast, get in, get out and most of all, get the shot — matters. That’s why when we designed our newest light, we first considered size. It’s seriously small. That said, it punches significantly above its weight.

DJI teases August 23 launch event, new drone in new video

18 Aug

DJI has published a video on its YouTube channel teasing a new product due out August 23, 2018. No specific details are shared, but at the very beginning of the video, we catch a glimpse of what appears to be an on/off button of a drone.

After the short clip of what looks like the body of a drone, the narrator of the video says:

For more than a decade we’ve taken the dimension of space to give you the freedom of flight. But did you think we’d stop there? Let us take you beyond the horizon where something incredible awaits. It’s about time.

The video wraps up with a clip that overlays the words ‘see the bigger picture.’

DroneDJ says the on-off button we see at the beginning of the video is likely that of the yet-to-be-announced Mavic 2 Drone. Considering the similarities between the device in the teaser clip and the Mavic Pro, it’s not much of a stretch to draw that conclusion.

Back in June, DJI sent out an invitation to press outlets teasing an event set for July 18. Three weeks after sending out the invitation, DJI delayed the event, citing issues regarding user experience and customer expectations. We’ll have to wait and see if the August event stays on-track or is pushed back once again.
