The Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD is a lightweight telephoto zoom lens for DSLR cameras that comes in at an MSRP of $ 799 / £699 / €1049, undercutting its Nikon and Canon competitors significantly. Despite the wallet-friendly price tag, the Tamron offers solid build quality and good optical performance. Let’s dig into the details of how this lens stacks up.

The Tamron 70-210mm F4, like its competitors, is well-suited to sports shooting from a moderate distance if you don’t need a faster F2.8 aperture.

This segment of lenses is an important step-up for photographers who want more speed than 55-200mm or 55-250mm kit telezooms, which often only offer F5.6 or F6.3 at the telephoto end, but without going all-in with the heft and expense of constant F2.8 variants. Unique to The Tamron is an extra 10mm of reach on the long end than its competitors (which makes for a nice, neat 3x zoom factor), but the difference between 210 and 200mm is negligible in real-world shooting.

But before we take a look at how the Tamron performs optically, let’s see how it’s built and how it handles.

Tamron acknowledges 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD autofocus issue

Autofocus issues with Tamron’s new 28-75mm F2.8 for E-mount have been reported by some users, and the company has issued an official acknowledgement of the problems. While there’s no fix just yet, Tamron says it is ‘evaluating the cause of the error’ and researching a solution. The company says it will issue a firmware update, which thanks to the open nature of Sony’s E-Mount standard, users will be able to apply the new firmware directly through the camera.

The issue specifically manifests itself as a complete autofocus freeze or fail, and though Tamron states that it primarily occurs in video shooting, users have reported issues in stills shooting as well. It’s worth noting that in our experience with the lens so far, we have not noticed any focus problems to the degree we’ve seen from users on YouTube.

We did have a handful of images that were slightly front-focused throughout the course of shooting our sample gallery, but nothing terribly out of the ordinary or resembling a complete focus fail that required restarting the camera or removing and re-mounting the lens.

Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 for E-Mount Sample Gallery

The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD has a lot going for it. It’s sharp, lightweight and at €829 / $ 799, is far cheaper than Sony’s own 24-70mm F2.8 GM. We’ve got our hands on a production model and are putting it through a full review, but in the meantime, we’ve been shooting with it around town to get a feel for its performance.

Video: Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 FE face and eye-detect autofocus test

The Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD for Sony FE cameras made a big splash when it was first teased back in February. People were intrigued by its small size and the new Rapid eXtra-silent stepping drive (RXD) AF motor; it even came up in our CP+ interview with Tamron, and we got to see the lens in person at the show.

The lens isn’t going to be officially available for another week; however, photographer David Oastler was able to get his hands on a copy and, while he wasn’t allowed to take photos with it, he was allowed to put it through it’s autofocus paces to see how that RXD motor holds up.

What Oastler really wanted to see is how well the Eye and Face-detect autofocus from the Sony FE body would perform through this third-party lens that was, ostensibly, designed from the ground up to work on this full-frame mirrorless system. While the video isn’t the best quality (a bit of glare) you can still see, and Oastler tells you, that the lens performs exceptionally well. In fact, Oastler goes so far as to say he noticed no performance difference between the Tamron and his own Sony-native lenses.

Tamron promised as much when it released the lens, calling it “quiet, precise, and exceedingly quiet.” But it’s nice to see a real-world test confirm these claims.

We’ll be trying to get our hands on a Tamron 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD as soon as humanly possible for our own in-depth testing. Tamron launches 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony FE, costs $800

In February, Tamron announced development of a 28-75mm F2.8 Di III RXD lens for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras. We got our hands on a prototype at CP+, and spoke to Tamron about the lens in our CP+ interview, but we still didn’t have much in way of details about this exciting piece of Sony FE glass… until now.

Tamron officially launched the lens this morning, revealing full specs, release date, and pricing information for the first third-party standard zoom to be created natively for the Sony FE mount. Here’s a video introduction to the new zoom lens:

The lens was designed from the ground up for Sony full-frame mirrorless cameras, and engineers at Tamron focused on three main features: optical quality, portability, and silent autofocus. The lens weighs in at just 19.4oz (550g) and measures just 4.6in (11.6cm) long. And while the body was made of polycarbonate instead of metal (to save weight) the lens is still ‘moisture resistant’ so you can use it in inclement weather.

Optically, the lens is made up of 15 elements in 12 groups, including an XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, a LD (Low Dispersion) element, a GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element, and two hybrid aspherical elements that have been arranged “in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size,” according to Tamron.

Finally, as the name suggests, the lens features Tamron’s new RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) autofocus motor. This new stepping motor offers quick, precise, and “exceedingly quiet” autofocus that Tamron claims “virtually eliminat[es] extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.”

Tamron announces the launch of a high-performance high-speed zoom lens for full-frame Sony mirrorless cameras

April 27, 2018, Commack, New York – Tamron announces the launch of the 28-75mm F/2.8 Di III RXD (Model A036)- a high-speed standard zoom lens for Sony E-mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. This new zoom lens delivers superb optical performance, including both outstanding image quality and beautiful background blur effects (bokeh) only possible with a fast aperture, thanks to a new optical system designed specifically for mirrorless cameras. The lens will be available at Tamron’s authorized USA retailers on May 24th at $ 799.

The usefulness and versatility inherent in compact full-frame mirrorless cameras are enhanced by this new Tamron lens’ compact size and lightweight-it measures only 4.6 in. and weighs just 19.4 oz. The Model A036 incorporates an all-new high-speed and precise AF driving system. The RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) strikes a balance between speed and silent operation, making it perfect for both video and still image capture.

In addition to shooting portraits with creative, defocused backgrounds, photographers can enjoy dynamic wide-angle expressions like never before thanks to a Minimum Object Distance (MOD) of 7.5 in. at the wide-angle zoom setting. The lens also features Moisture-Resistant Construction that is useful in outdoor photography, plus hydrophobic Fluorine Coating that is highly resistant to fingerprints and dirt. Product Highlights

1. Superb optical performance, including both outstanding image quality and beautiful background blur effects (bokeh), provided by fast F/2.8 aperture.

The Model A036 features a new design that leverages the advanced image quality of the latest full-frame mirrorless cameras. To balance beautiful bokeh with high image quality, the optical formula (15 elements in 12 groups) includes a special XLD (eXtra Low Dispersion) element, LD (Low Dispersion) element, GM (Glass Molded Aspherical) element and two hybrid aspherical lens elements in the optimal arrangement to correct aberrations and reduce the overall lens size. The lens also employs Tamron’s BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) Coating that boasts exceptional anti-reflection performance throughout the entire zoom range, even when shooting in backlit conditions. In addition, incorporating the nine-blade circular diaphragm design, the lens will perform in versatile situation, providing beautiful soft portrayal at wide open aperture to a clear and sharp image when stopped down.

2. Comfortably lightweight (19.4 oz.) and compact (4.6 in).

Extra emphasis was placed on creating a high speed, fast aperture zoom lens in a compact and lightweight design because standard-range zooms are generally the most frequently used. Weighing only 19.4 oz. with a total length of just 4.6 in., the A036 enables photographers to enjoy the mobility provided by a compact, lightweight, full-frame mirrorless camera in all situations from casual snapshots to stunning portraits and dramatic landscape photography.

3. Minimum Object Distance of 7.5 in.; Working Distance 2.24 in.

The Model A036 breaks from the convention that the MOD of a zoom lens must be fixed throughout the focal range and achieves a MOD of 7.5 in. at the 28mm wide-angle end which delivers a maximum image magnification of 1:2.9. The working distance of just 2.24 in. from the front element allows photographers to enjoy close-up shooting that emphasizes the sense of perspective unique to wide angles. At the 75mm telephoto end, the 15.3 in. MOD provides an image magnification of 1:4, thereby enabling close-up shooting with a pleasantly blurred background similar to a macro lens.

4. All-new “RXD” stepping motor AF unit is excellently quiet and therefore perfect for video capture.

The AF drive incorporates a sensor that accurately detects the position of the lens and an RXD (Rapid eXtra-silent stepping Drive) stepping motor unit optimized for AF control. This achieves quick and precise AF operation, allowing users to maintain pin-sharp focus on continually moving subjects or when filming video. Additionally, the AF motor is exceedingly quiet, virtually eliminating extraneous AF drive sounds during video recording.

5. Consistent with Tamron’s exciting, ergonomically superb next-generation design.

The Model A036 features a mirrorless-oriented design that adheres to Tamron’s new “human touch” lens design concept. As signified by the Luminous Gold brand ring, careful attention to detail has produced an optimum shape reflecting the characteristic look of a Tamron-branded lens, whether on its own or attached to a camera body. This design emphasizes consistent brand identity combined with ease of operation.

6. Moisture-Resistant Construction and Fluorine Coating for weather protection.

Environmental seals are located at the lens mount area and other critical locations to prevent infiltration of moisture and/or rain drops and afford Moisture-Resistant Construction. This feature provides an additional layer of protection when shooting outdoors under adverse weather conditions. Also, the front surface of the lens element is coated with a protective fluorine compound that has excellent water- and oil-repellant qualities. The lens surface is easier to wipe clean and is less vulnerable to the damaging effects of dirt, moisture or oily fingerprints, allowing for much easier maintenance.

7. Compatible with main camera-specific features and functions.

Tamron’s new 28-75mm zoom is compatible with many of the advanced features that are specific to certain mirrorless cameras. This includes the following*:

Tamron interview: “Our strength is high quality lenses in a compact size”

At last month’s CP+ show in Yokohama, Japan we sat down with senior executives from several major camera and lens manufacturers, including Tamron. Our conversation covered various topics, including the move to new native mirrorless designs, and the decline in DSLR lens sales.

The following interview was conducted through an interpreter, and has been edited for clarity and flow. Answers from the four interviewees have been combined.


Is the new 28-75mm a completely new design?

It is, yes.

How long has it been in development?

Typically a lens like this takes around one year to develop.

Tamron’s upcoming 28-75mm F2.8 is the first third-party zoom lens designed natively for full-frame mirrorless cameras.

What was your goal when designing this lens?

When we are planning new products, we’re always thinking about the voice of our customers, and customer benefit. The market is moving towards mirrorless, so we wanted to launch new FE lenses. Sony has the biggest market share of the mirrorless market.

With the Sony Alpha 7 series, the bodies are compact, but the lenses are relatively big

We’re also aiming for high quality, and good performance. And specifically for FE lenses, we wanted a small and lightweight option. With the Sony Alpha 7 series, the bodies are compact, but the lenses are relatively big. So when we were planning a fast lens for FE lens it was important to us that it would be compact, but still high quality.

This is the first third-party [zoom] lens for the Sony full-frame E-mount, and we’re expecting it to do well in the market.

Are you planning to create Sony E-mount versions of your existing SP primes and zooms, or will you make entirely new designs?

We’re not planning on making Sony E-mount versions of our existing lenses, no. Our concept is a little different to Sigma’s. We’re trying to customize lenses specifically for FE, otherwise they’d be too big. When it comes to autofocus, mirrorless has different requirements too. Mirrorless cameras are good for movies as well as stills, and existing AF motors aren’t very good for video. This lens [the new 28-75mm F2.8] has a stepping motor for autofocus, which is better for video.

The new 70-200mm F4 promises high quality, without the size and weight that we generally associate with faster F2.8 telezooms.

How important is the Sony customer base to you now?

Very important. Everybody is going to mirrorless. Canon and Nikon will launch full-frame mirrorless cameras, probably in the near future. When this happens, we can easily make Canon and Nikon versions of our [native] E-mount lenses. The same design could work for [multiple mirrorless mounts].

So with this new lens, you’re thinking ahead.

Yes, to the near future.

Optical performance of the new 28-75mm F2.8 will be equivalent to our SP lenses

This new lens is not in the ‘SP’ range. What does this signify?

Within Tamron, we have an internal definition of SP, where we usually utilize metal for the body material, and certain other features. Optical performance of the new 28-75mm F2.8 will be equivalent to our SP lenses, but for this model we prioritized smaller size and lower weight, so we used polycarbonate instead of metal.

Is this new lens weather-sealed?

Yes, it is. We describe it as ‘moisture-resistant construction’.

Despite not belonging to the ‘SP’ range of lenses, the new 28-75mm is moisture-resistant, featuring a rubber gasket around the lens mount to protect against dust and water incursion.

Is making this change to mirrorless lens designs an urgent priority for Tamron?

I can’t give you any detailed information about our future roadmap, but we’re watching the market closely. And Sony has the biggest share of the mirrorless market, so of course E-mount lenses are a priority.

How do you want the Tamron brand to be viewed by your customers?

We’re always thinking about our customers, and we’re not going to sacrifice performance and quality. We want to be recognized as a high-quality brand, and we stand by our customers, always. Each brand has a strategy, and our approach is a little different to [some competitors]. We try to very open with our customers.

Our strength is making compact, light and high quality lenses.

We’ve seen some manufacturers create entry-level cine lenses for videographers. Is that something that Tamron is interested in?

Maybe in the future, but at this point I can’t say whether we’ll enter that market.

Balancing performance and size is a Tamron strength

If you had a choice between making a lens that was very large, but very high quality, or one that was smaller and optically less impressive, which would you choose?

We try to pursue both small size, and high performance. Balancing performance and size is a Tamron strength. For this new zoom, if we had started at 24mm for example, the lens would be much bigger and heavier. By starting the zoom range at 28mm, it became much smaller and lighter, and easier to handle. We think that’s what our customers want.

Tamron’s ‘Tap-in Console’ allows the performance of some of its SP lenses to be tweaked and customized on an individual basis.

Increasingly when we visit factories, we’re seeing more and more automation. How much automation does Tamron use in your factories?

Automation is being gradually increased, but we don’t emphasize it. In some cases, manual processes are better for product quality. If automation would be good for the quality of the final product, we might utilize it. It all depends.

Are your lenses mostly assembled by hand, at present?

Some processes are automated, but others are manual so it’s difficult to say.

We’re always thinking about what we can provide in the market that’s innovative

Where do you think the biggest opportunities lie for Tamron in the future?

We’re always thinking about what we can provide in the market that’s innovative. Our strength is high quality lenses in a compact size. So going forward we want to be able to provide good products in each market segment.

The requirement for video must change how you develop lenses, beyond just the kind of AF motor you use?

Yes, it does. We have also developed other technologies to support video. At this point we’re not finished, but we’re always developing ways of manufacturing new lenses.

Optical designs need to change, and also autofocus technology

When we look at conventional DSLR lenses and mirrorless lenses, the technologies necessary to make them are a little bit different. The optical designs need to change, and also the autofocus technology. We’re always thinking about what kind of technologies would be good for mirrorless compared to DSLR, and what works for what focal length, and things like that.

You mentioned that the audience for mirrorless lenses will increase – will the audience for DSLR lenses decrease?

Yes, it already is. We’re watching the market and the data already shows us that the market is declining.


Editor’s note:

Perhaps the most interesting insight from our interview with Tamron this year was confirmation that the market for DSLR lenses is declining. It makes complete sense that Tamron (and Sigma) would be focusing on developing lenses for full-frame Sony E-mount cameras now, since by common agreement, Canon and Nikon will launch their own large-sensor mirrorless cameras pretty soon.

In the same way as one basic optical design can be adapted for multiple SLR mounts, Tamron’s new FE 28-75mm F2.8, which is optimized for the short flange-back distance of modern mirrorless systems, could be adapted for future mirrorless platforms as and when they emerge.

It is clear that Tamron’s executives see their company’s mission as slightly different to Sigma’s. Whereas Sigma is committed to a ‘no compromise’ approach in its Art-series which sometimes results in large, heavy products, Tamron sees its value in small, lightweight but still high-performing lenses. Maybe the primes will open up to F1.8 rather than F1.4, and the zooms might start at 28mm rather than 24mm, but clearly the company believes that some users will be happy with those compromises for the sake of smaller, lighter (and potentially cheaper) lenses.

I think they’re right about that, and the new 28-75mm F2.8 looks like a good start. Obviously we don’t yet know how it will perform optically, but if it compares well to Sony’s own 24-70mm F2.8 GM at equivalent focal lengths, it might well become a benchmark standard zoom for mirrorless. That, in turn, would put Tamron in a very good position to get in on the ground floor of development for the wide range of full-frame mirrorless cameras we’re expecting from various manufacturers in the future.

CP+ 2018: Hands-on with the Tamron 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD

Tamron’s new 70-210mm F4 Di VC USD looks like a really promising lens, offering a more compact and affordable alternative to the company’s existing 70-200mm F2.8 telezoom. We got our hands on one at the CP+ trade show in Yokohama, Japan – click through for a closer look.

To start, the 70-210mm F4 VC really is impressively compact, weighing just 859 grams. It balances very well on a Nikon D750, one of the smaller full-frame DSLRs currently on the market, and shouldn’t give you a hand cramp if you haven’t shelled out for your camera’s accessory battery grip.

As with Tamron’s 70-200mm F2.8, the new F4 version features a two-ring design, with the zoom ring pushed all the way out to the end of the barrel. Whether you prefer this to a zoom ring closer to the camera is a matter of personal preference, of course, but in our brief time with the lens, we found the zoom ring to be just a bit too narrow.

Autofocus speed is perhaps not quite as snappy as Nikon’s 70-200mm F4 offering, but should be plenty fast enough for shooting moving subjects.

The 70-210mm F4 comes with Tamron’s Vibration Compensation system, offering a claimed four stops of stabilization (per CIPA). If you’re working on a tripod or just happen to have the world’s steadiest hands, the stabilization system can be disabled via a switch on the side. An autofocus / manual focus switch rounds out the lens’ external controls.

The Tamron 70-210 F4 has a 67mm front filter thread size, as well as a fluorine coating on the front element to better repel water and resist fingerprints.

Including the coated front element, the 70-210mm’s optical construction comprises 20 elements in 14 groups. Three of those elements are low-dispersion, helping to combat axial and transverse chromatic aberration.

Tamron’s 70-210mm F4 is weather-resistant, with a visible gasket on the rear of the lens and a bevy of additional gaskets at other ‘critical areas.’ Obviously it’s not meant to be submersible, but it should stand up to some light rain in a pinch.

The included bayonet-style petal hood adds a good bit of length to the 70-210mm F4, but its depth should provide decent flare protection in bright shooting conditions. Tamron is offering a tripod ring as well, but it’s an optional extra.

If 210mm isn’t quite enough reach for you, the lens is compatible with both Tamron’s 1.4X and 2.0X teleconverters, as well as the TAP-In console for focus calibration.

The Tamron 70-210mm Di VC USD will be available in Nikon and Canon mounts this April for an MSRP of $ 800.
