Platypod Ultra compact camera support launches on Kickstarter with more features than Pro model

Platypod, the company behind the compact camera support of the same name, has launched a new product on Kickstarter called Platypod Ultra. This latest model is designed for mid-size and mirrorless cameras, unlike the larger Max model and original Pro model. Ultra is compatible with the majority of pro-tier tripod ball heads, according to Platypod, though the device itself is only about the size of a smartphone, making it ultra-compact.

Platypod Ultra is thicker (4.6mm vs 4.0mm) and 10% wider than the original Platypod Pro, making it sturdier, according to the company. The Ultra model comes with four spiked, threaded feet with rubber tips on one end, enabling the device to be used at a variety of angles on both rough and smooth surfaces. The Platypod Ultra also features five threaded holes for greater balancing and positioning options.

The company has also added three new openings to the Ultra plate so that it can be transported on bags using bungie cords or carabiners; there are also three countersunk holes for screwing the plate to a surface, such as a wood post. Finally, the plate also has two belt slots for strapping the tripod to irregularly shaped or vertical surfaces. The company is including a Velcro cinch strap with the kit.

The company is also launching a multi-accessory kit with accessories for both the Ultra and Max models. This kit includes a non-slip pad, 36-inch cinch strap, 3-inch spigot adapter, and a riser for certain tripod ball heads.

The Kickstarter campaign has exceeded its funding goal with more than two weeks remaining. The company is offering backers who pledge at least $ 49 a single Ultra unit, while a $ 69 pledge will also include the multi-accessory kit. Shipping to backers is estimated to start this upcoming July.

Helping Hands: “Support” Sculpture Braces Venetian Architecture From Below

Historic architecture meets modern art on the canals of Venice, where a pair of gigantic hands emerge from the depths to lend support above the waterline.

Designed by Lorenzo Quinn, “Support” was put into place a month in advance of the 57th International Art Biennale but is already drawing massive crowds ahead of its official debut.

It was prefabricated and shipped into positioned down the Grand Canal, then assembled and positioned so that it appears to support the Sagredo Hotel, a structure dating back to the 14th century.

Like many historic buildings in the city, this one rises straight up from the water — also like others, it is threatened by the prospect of higher sea levels as well as sinking and settling of the ground below.

“I wanted to sculpt what is considered the hardest and most technically challenging part of the human body. the hand holds so much power – the power to love, to hate, to create, to destroy” says the artist.

“Venice is a floating art city that has inspired cultures for centuries, but to continue to do so it needs the support of our generation and future ones, because it is threatened by climate change and time decay.”

Flat-Pack Life Support: NASA’s Inflatable Hydroponic Space Greenhouse

A key development in the quest to create sustainable ecosystems in space, this expandable greenhouse prototype aims to generate essential food and oxygen for long-term astronaut travel.

Recently, Peggy Whitson broke the record for longest stay in space (534 days) and astronauts have started growing their own vegetables on the International Space Station. This collapsible growing unit aims to take things to the next level, enabling longer-term settlements on places including the moon and Mars.

Developed by NASA and agricultural researchers at the University of Arizona, the test unit spans 7 by 18 feet. Its primary functions: convert carbon dioxide from crew, support plant photosynthesis. This bio-regenerative approach to life support is an essential system for recycling scarce resources off-planet.

It also takes its queues directly from our own world: “We’re mimicking what the plants would have if they were on Earth, and using of these processes for life support. The entire system of the lunar greenhouse does represent, in a small way, the biological systems that are here on earth.”

But a big trick to the design is simply its portability: materials take up space, so engineering minimal frameworks that will work when the system is expanded is critical to getting space greenhouses into (and out of) orbit in the first place.

Meanwhile, on the ISS, astronauts continue to grow (and consume) plants outside of Earth’s normal gravity, paving the way for a better understanding of how agriculture will really work off-planet in the future.

Olympus firmware update brings support for Profoto remote and more to E-M1 II, EM-5 II and PEN-F

Olympus has announced major firmware updates for its E-M1 Mark II, E-M5 Mark II and PEN-F, as well as a pair of lenses. The camera updates add support for Profoto’s TTL flash system and provide plenty of new features, detailed below.

The first new feature is support for the Air Remote TTL-O (‘O’ for Olympus) radio trigger from Profoto. Pop it on the hot shoe and you can use a simple interface to control off-camera Profoto Air TTL flashes in both TTL and HSS modes.

Other major features include AF Target Spot Metering (E-M1 II only), the ability to set a minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO (PEN-F only), improvements to the AF touchpad function on the PEN-F for left-eye shooters, the ability to use High Res Shot and Focus Stacking modes when shooting with non-Olympus flashes, improved color reproduction on the E-M1 II’s EVF, and more.

Two lenses also receive updates: the 12-100mm F4 IS Pro and 300mm F4 IS Pro. The updates boosts sequential shooting performance when IS is turned on when using the E-M1 II and also improve 5-axis Sync IS with the E-M5 II and the original E-M1.

Midtone adjustment function added to Highlight & Shadow Control

The new midtone adjustment function has been added to the Highlight & Shadow Control on the E-M5 Mark II to provide control over bright and dark sections of a subject and to give users complete control over the tonal properties of the image.

AF Target Spot Metering provides spot metering at the focus point

AF Target Spot Metering is now available on the E-M5 Mark II to effectively link the AF Target position and spot metering area.

Touch to select Art Filters while viewing sample images on the screen

Sample images that demonstrate the effects of the Art Filter are now shown at the bottom of the PEN-F’s screen. Users can simply view and touch the sample Art Filter image on the screen to instantly activate that option.

Set the shutter speed to begin raising the ISO sensitivity in ISO AUTO

It is now possible to control the lowest shutter speed setting on the PEN-F. This allows users to predefine a minimum shutter speed so that the ISO sensitivity increases in low-light situations rather than slowing down the shutter speed. This is convenient for handheld shooting in low-light environments.

Improved AF Targeting Pad on the rear LCD monitor

The firmware update makes it possible to use touchpad operations on the PEN-F even if your nose touches the rear LCD monitor while looking through the viewfinder. The AF Targeting Pad provides the freedom to move the AF point on the rear LCD monitor using touch operations while keeping your eye on the viewfinder.

High Res Shot and Focus Stacking Mode compatibility on non-Olympus flashes

The E-M1 Mark II’s powerful 50MP High Res Shot and Focus Stacking Modes are now supported with both Olympus flashes and flashes from other manufacturers.

Automatic switching to rear LCD monitor when shooting with the viewfinder

When shooting through the E-M1 Mark II’s viewfinder during Rec View, the camera now automatically switches to the rear LCD monitor for image playback when the eye is moved away from the viewfinder.

AF HOME settings saved when camera is turned off

Previously, AF HOME settings were reset after the E-M1 Mark II was turned off. The firmware upgrade saves the user’s AF HOME settings even if the camera is turned off.

Updated: Sony a9 samples with Raw support

Out-of-camera JPEG	Processed to taste from Adobe Camera Raw

We’ve found with some consistency that overall color rendition and auto white balance performance could stand to be improved on the Sony a9 for its out-of-camera files.

You’ve no doubt heard of the Sony a9 by now – indeed, we’ve been covering as many details as we responsibly can before having a final review unit of our own. But since we’ve just been given full support from Adobe, it’s time for a closer look at the a9’s image quality, but this time we can compare the Raw files to the out-of-camera JPEGs to see how they stack up.

To start, the Raw files from the Sony a9 are just what we’d expect from a latest-generation Sony sensor. Noise appears to be well-controlled, and they’re very malleable, even at the high ISO values we found ourselves shooting at. However, processing the Raws has also given me a greater perspective on both the strong and weak points of Sony’s JPEG engine.

The noise (or lack thereof)

Sony’s context-sensitive noise reduction works very well at keeping noise in check while retaining detail at its default settings. However, I found that the a9’s processing can at times look a little heavy-handed to me at its default settings, which we typically use. In processing out the Raws in Adobe Camera Raw, I ended up with an image that is technically noisier because its processing isn’t as sophisticated, but it comes with a little more ‘bite’ (though this may well be due to the increase in perceived sharpness that a bit of grain can provide).

At smaller viewing sizes, I found the Raw-processed images which have more visible grain to have just a bit more ‘bite,’ with the out-of-camera JPEG looking a little ‘waxy’ in comparison. That said, Sony’s algorithm does an outstanding job controlling distracting noise in the background and maintaining crisp edges, like along the athlete’s shirt and arm (and this is an ISO 8000 image).

It comes down to personal taste of course, but I personally don’t mind trading a little noise for a crisper image, and given the time, it’s likely I would be able to find a better balance of in-camera settings. If you’re going to be using the JPEGs from the a9, it’s worth spending some time with the a9’s noise reduction and sharpening settings to find what works best for you.

The noise reduction isn’t likely to be a deal breaker for a lot of people who need to shoot JPEGs for web viewing. No, the real trouble continues to lie in Sony’s color output.

The color


Out-of-camera JPEG	Processed to taste from Adobe Camera Raw

The out-of-camera file shows a purple ping-pong table – it was not purple. It was a deep blue.

We’ve not been wild about Sony’s color for a while now, which generally skew towards greenish yellows and cool greens – for an example of the latter, simply look at the track in the background in the above image (and there’s many more examples in the gallery). And as we’ve seen from the noise example in the previous section, sophisticated sharpening algorithms are of more limited importance when viewing at small sizes on the web, while quality of color is arguably going to have more of an impact.

These issues with color are exacerbated with auto white balance that struggled under artificial light (see the skaters at the top of the page). Sure, it’s not difficult to dial in a custom white balance for a sideline photographer shooting under the same light all evening, but it’s something to note nonetheless as auto white balance can be valuable for fast-moving photographers in fast-changing situations.

And that brings us to our samples gallery, which has been updated and re-ordered to make it easy to compare the out-of-camera images (which come first) and the JPEGs processed out from Raw files.

Firmware update brings DNG support and improved AF speeds to Sigma sd Quattro

Sigma has released a significant firmware update for its sd Quattro cameras. Firmware version 1.04 adds support for the DNG format (12-bit), improves AF speeds with Contemporary, Art and Sports lenses by 10-30% and enhances compatibility with the company’s Capture Pro software.

Capture Pro now supports live view when tethered to the camera as well as the Quattro’s multi-shot SFD mode. Color rendition when using the EF-630 flash (with flash white balance) has also been improved.

Lastly, several bugs have been knocked out, including problems with the AF shooting button not functioning when AF Lock is being used.

Sigma Announces Firmware Update to sd Quattro Cameras

Cactus announces flash transceiver firmware upgrade to support wireless cross-brand TTL

Cactus has announced a series of brand-specific firmware updates for its V6 II and V6 IIs triggers that will add TTL functions alongside their cross-brand HSS support.

The triggers are already capable of high speed sync across systems, as well as remote control over flash power and zoom. The upcoming firmware updates will add the ability to support automatic TTL exposure across brands as well. The first firmware releases will support Sigma, Fujifilm and Sony, with support for Nikon, Canon, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax following one-by-one.

Hong Kong, March 24, 24, 2017 – Just nine months since the release of the Cactus V6 II and Cactus V6 IIs, Cactus is now launching a series of brand-specific firmware upgrades to transform the cross-brand HSS flash triggers to one that also supports crosscross-brand wireless TTL. The new X-TTL firmware versions, apart from supporting cross-brand high-speed sync (HSS/FP), remote power and zoom control of Canon, Fujifilm, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, Pentax and Sigma flashes all at the same time¹, NOW support automatic TTL exposure in the same cross-brand environment, both on-camera and off-camera.²

The first wave of firmware releases will be for Sigma Sony and Fujifilm. Other camera systems, Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic and Pentax, will follow one by one as we complete system integration on the V6 II. All these X-TTL firmware versions are free of charge for V6 II / V6 IIs users. The new firmware is system-specific so users simply choose the corresponding system when updating with the Cactus Firmware Updater. Once installed, the V6 II / V6 IIs is transformed into a cross-brand wireless TTL flash trigger.

This unique function gives photographers an unprecedented flexibility. The need for matching flashes with the same camera system for on and off-camera TTL flash photography is over – TTL without boundaries.

Cross-brand TTL

The X-TTL firmware allows users to have wireless TTL automatic exposure with camera and flash that runs on the same system, such as a Canon camera triggering a Canon flash, and one that runs on different systems, such as a Sigma camera triggering a Nikon system flash.

Similar to the cross-brand HSS firmware on the V6 II, the supported flash systems for wireless cross-brand TTL include Canon, Nikon, Olympus, Panasonic, and flash that runs on the same camera system.

Two unique Exposure Locks

Cactus is unveiling a brand new approach in using TTL metering. Over the past, professionals who love the convenience from TTL metering often have to suffer inconsistency in lighting outputs, making post processing a pain. In view of this Cactus devised two types of Exposure Locks.

1. Flash Compensate: Store a desired flash exposure that will automatically adjust according to changes in camera settings. Gone is the ever-changing flash exposures between each TTL metering.

2. Flash Power Lock: Lock flash power output after a desired TTL exposure is achieved. Perfect for consistency in repeat shooting. Wireless TTL functions

The X-TTL firmware will also support advanced TTL functions on the Cactus V6 II and V6 IIs, such as first and second (rear) curtain sync, on-camera TTL, group TTL metering and TTL lighting ratios³.

New support for Sigma

We are delighted to offer firmware support for Sigma cameras and flashes. This includes remote power control, remote zoom control, wireless High-speed Sync, and wireless TTL with Sigma’s SA-TTL flashes. The same cross-brand support is also available on the Sigma X-TTL firmware. Cactus expresses appreciation to SIGMA CORPORATION for their immense support in our development for Sigma system firmware.

Fujifilm TTL and HSS

With the introduction of Fujifilm new flash system launched on the EF-X500, Highspeed Sync (HSS/FP) is finally available. Besides adopting the new HSS platform, the upcoming Fujifilm X-TTL firmware also extends support for wireless TTL to Fujifilm flashes as well as Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Panasonic flashes. Fujifilm X-TTL Firmware release date will be announced on our website.

V6 IIs with Sony TTL

Existing Sony V6 IIs users already has a system-specific transceiver unit, and the upcoming Sony X-TTL firmware adds wireless TTL support for Sony flashes and other system flashes when paired with the Cactus V6 II. Sony X-TTL Firmware release date will be announced on our website.

System-specific X-TTL firmware versions are free of charge. Download the Cactus Firmware Updater⁴ and select the corresponding system firmware to install the X-TTL firmware on the Cactus V6 II and V6 IIs.

Adobe Lightroom CC 2015.9 arrives with new camera and lens support, loads of bug fixes

In addition to its Camera Raw update, Adobe has released Lightroom CC 2015.9, adding support for additional cameras and lens profiles, as well as nearly two dozen bug fixes. The update is available now; existing users can download the latest version by selecting ‘Help’ > ‘Updates’ in the application’s menu.

Adobe Lightroom 2015.9 adds support for the following cameras:

In addition to the new camera support, Lightroom 2015.9 has gained support for more than two dozen lens profiles, including for lenses from Nikon, Canon, Apple, Sony, and DJI. The full list of lens additions can be found here.

Lastly, the new Lightroom CC update corrects 21 different bugs and issues as detailed in the following changelog:

Upright error where the “Update” button was incorrectly enabled when Upright is unable to find a correction.
Lens Profile Auto Matching was not working for Zeiss Batis 85mm lenses.
Cursor movements on Point Curves were erratic
Issue related to abnormal Lightroom exit when using Full Screen mode. The issue only occurred on Mac OS 10.12 (Sierra)
Develop Module Locked after deleting images while using two displays
Live Photos created on iPhoto caused the JPEG to be treated like an XMP sidecar file
Instead of deleting currently selected photo, deletes face tag from previous viewed photo
Images from Canon EOS G7X MK II sometimes had a green color cast
Unable to change the image after deleting a rejected photo in develop module
Export was taking longer than expected.
Unable to import compressed raw files from Fujifilm XT-2 and X-Pro2
iPhone video Capture Time is shifted upon Import

Adobe Camera Raw 9.9 launches with new camera and lens profile support

Adobe has announced the release of Camera Raw 9.9 for Creative Cloud subscribers, adding expanded lens profile and camera raw support. In addition to the new support, ACR 9.9 fixes a trio of bugs, including a ‘rare crash’ associated with JPEGs, a bug that affected Lens Profile Auto Matching when used with Zeiss Batis 85mm lenses, and an Upright bug issue.

The latest version of Camera Raw adds support for the following cameras:
