Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 and Sony Alpha 7S added to studio comparison

With our comparative review underway, we’ve added studio test scene results from both the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GH4 and Sony Alpha 7S to our comparison tool. The 16MP Micro Four Thirds Panasonic GH4 and 12MP full-frame Sony a7S both shoot 4K video, and we spent some time in part one of our review taking a look at those features. Lastolite ‘Out of Focus’ backgrounds bring beautiful bokeh to your home studio

Everyone loves the look of a nice out of focus background, but it’s hard to achieve in a home studio. Accessory manufacturer Lastolite believes it might have the solution, with two new reversible backgrounds printed with out of focus images of the ocean / autumn foliage and summer foliage / city lights. Measuring 1.5 x 1.2m, the backgrounds are big enough for almost full-length portraits of most adults, and weigh in at 3kg (6.6lb) each. Click through for more details.

Real-world & Studio Samples Added to Nikon D810 1st-impressions Review

Nikon’s new D810 consolidates the older D800 and D800E into a single body with no AA filter on its 36MP CMOS sensor. A few days ago we received a final production sample Nikon D810 and we’ve been shooting with it intensely ever since. As well as putting it through our initial studio testing, we’ve also taken a quick look at the effectiveness of the new electronic first-curtain shutter and created a gallery of real-world sample images to show what the camera can do. Drone lighting could be coming soon to your studio

A flying flash rig that tracks the position of both photographer and subject to maintain consistent lighting angles has been developed by researchers from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Cornell University. In a project designed to test co-ordination between aerial robots and ground-based targets, researchers programmed a flash-carrying drone to light people in the studio as the subjects and the photographer changed positions. Read more

We’ve just gotten ahold of a full-production Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX100 III and we’ve added studio test scene images to our first impressions review. This third generation of Sony’s much-acclaimed enthusiast compact features a 20.1 megapixel 1″-type BSI-CMOS sensor, a pop-up electronic viewfinder and a more consistently fast 24-70mm equivalent F1.8-2.8 lens than its predecessor. Blackmagic Design launches Blackmagic Studio Camera

Touted as ‘the world’s smallest broadcast camera with the world’s largest viewfinder’, Blackmagic Design has announced its new Studio Camera. The Studio Camera employs a 12.48mm x 7.02mm sensor and a Micro Four Thirds lens mount. It also has a 10-inch viewfinder and a four-hour built-in battery. Learn more

Nikon D4s studio samples added to first-impressions review

We just added studio test scene images to our First Impressions Review of the Nikon D4s. The D4s is a refined version of Nikon’s flagship DSLR, incorporating several changes – large and small – resulting from feedback from professional users. As well as minor ergonomic refinements and a slightly improved video mode the D4s also offers a highest ISO sensitivity of 409,600 (equivalent) – the highest we’ve ever seen.
