Nokia investment hints at Lytro-style technology in smartphones

The Finnish smartphone manufacturer Nokia has made a $ 20 million investment in Pelican Imaging which is known for its consumer imaging technology that features a grid of lenses to allow for post-capture focusing — similar to the system used in Lytro cameras. Adobe releases Photoshop Touch for Android and iOS smartphones

Adobe has announced a smartphone version of its Photoshop Touch app for both Android and iOS. The app was originally launched for 10-inch tablets and more recently a version for smaller tablets, such as the iPad Mini and Google Nexus 7. It includes features familiar to Photoshop users such as layers, advanced selections tools, adjustments and filters, but in a much smaller format. Luxi turns smartphones into incident light meters

Luxi is a diffusion dome accessory that aims to turns your smartphone into an affordable incident light meter. The accessory is currently gaining traction via a Kickstarter campaign, is designed to work as an incident light meter by measuring the light for an entire scene, rather than just reflected light. Flying helicopter camera captures video while streaming to smartphones

San Francisco-based startup Always Innovating has announced that it is working a tiny flying camera designed to follow you around and capture your every move on video which can be streamed directly to an Android smartphone. You’ll be able to control the MeCam – a tiny helicopter-like device – via voice commands and share the video via social media. CES provided a chance for us to get our hands on to of the latest smartphones. Interestingly, Sony’s Xperia Z, ZTE’s Grand S and the Huawei Ascend D2 are all built around 5″, 1920 x 1080 pixel screens and feature 13MP cameras. All run Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) and yet, despite the spec similarities, there are still differences – in the user experience as well as the processors used. We had the opportunity to use both phones, to see how they behave – find out what we thought.

USA gets Holiday deals on smartphones and accessories

Over at Connect we’re assembling a list of Holiday deals – with the first smartphone and accessory deals listed today. We’ll be highlighting more interesting offers as they come to our attention. The period around the Thanksgiving holiday is particularly prominent for shopping in the USA, with the Friday afterwards (known as Black Friday) and the subsequent Monday (dubbed ‘Cyber Monday’) being a focus of in-store and internet deals respectively. A recent survey suggests that smartphone usage could see Thanksgiving itself become ‘Mobile Thursday’ as people shop from their ‘phones.
