Panasonic announces first 8K camera with its organic image sensor inside

Panasonic has announced its first camera to use the organic film sensor it announced in February. This comes five years after announcing a collaboration with Fujifilm and seven years after the technology was patented. The AK-SHB810 uses the technology to offer 8K resolution at 60p and ‘global’ shutter.

The camera comes in the form of a ‘head unit’ that attaches via fiber-optical cable to an offboard processing unit. It should be available in 2019 with the Japanese press release talking about providing an 8K broadcast system in time for 2020, when Tokyo will host the Olympic Games. Panasonic also mentions feature film production, which explains the use of the industry-standard ‘PL’ mount.

In a conventional CMOS sensor, the silicon acts as the light-sensitive medium, charge storage and readout circuitry: reading out the pixel ends the exposure, so the shutter behavior is determined by the readout rate. In the organic film/CMOS chip, the two processes are independent, so the exposure can be stopped for the whole sensor to give a global shutter, with readout occuring in the background.

As well as avoiding any ‘rolling shutter’ skewing effect, Panasonic highlights that a global shutter means that flashguns fired while recording won’t cause partial bright bands across the image (something that could be distracting in broadcasts of indoor sporting events).

In addition, the sensor design allows the sensitivity of the capture medium to be varied to give a continuously variable virtual ‘ND Filter’ effect. The company also promises wide dynamic range capture, though puts no figures on this.

All these features stem from a fundamental aspect of the new sensor: the separation of the light gathering function of the sensor from the readout process and its circuitry.

The global shutter can be achieved because the light sensitive layer can be turned on and off (or its sensitivity varied) by varying the charge applied to it. This means that the whole film layer can capture a frame and then be made inactive while the CMOS circuitry underneath reads-out. In turn, this means the capture pattern doesn’t have to be defined by the sensor’s readout rate: progressively working down the frame.

The ability to vary the sensitivity of the organic film layer by adjusting the charge applied to it provides the virtual ‘ND filter’ affect, which can mimic ‘whole stop’ NDs or be continuously variable.

Pricing is not mentioned in the press release.

New Sony sensor specs resemble chips found inside Fujifilm X-T3, Panasonic GH5S, others

Sony has updated its sensor page and shared the details of a number of new image sensors it’s made. Sure enough, a few of them bear a striking resemblance to sensors inside other manufacturers cameras.

One sensor in particular, a 26-megapixel backside-illuminated (BSI) APS-C chip nicknamed IMX571, bears an uncanny resemblance to the sensor used inside Fujifilm’s X-T3 camera. While Fujifilm hasn’t confirmed it’s a Sony sensor inside the X-T3, General Manager of Fujifilm UK, Theo Georgiades, did say it wasn’t a Samsung sensor used inside the camera, as some believed to be the case, leaving little doubt that it was Sony who manufactured the sensor. The specs listed under this image sensor on Sony’s website all but confirm that speculation.

It’s also worth noting that there’s a good chance we’ll see Sony build something around this sensor as well. The a6300 and a6500 both use the same sensor as Fujifilm’s X-T2, so it’s not a stretch to imagine Sony will be releasing one or two A600-series cameras using the 26-megapixel BSI image sensor found inside the X-T3.

The BSI IMX461 sensor has been in the works for a long time and based on Fujifilm’s announcement that it is currently developing a 100-megapixel medium format camera, it’s likely this is the sensor that will be inside of it. The sensor has 3.76 micron pixels and features a maximum frame-rate of up to six frames per second.

The IMX299 is a bit harder to hit on the head, but based on it being 11-megapixls, having 4.63 micron pixels, and a 60 frames per second readout, it’s almost certainly the sensor found inside the Panasonic GH5S.

Last but not least is the IMX272. This 20-megapixel Four Thirds-type sensor has 3.3 micron pixels and a maximum readout of 60 frames per second. We don’t have any reason to believe this is currently in any camera, but it seems like an incredibly capable sensor that could show up in a very high-performing Four Thirds camera in the future.

iPhone XS Max teardown reveals new sensor with more focus pixels

When Apple announced the new iPhone models XS and XS Max the company told us that the camera’s wide-angle module featured a larger sensor with 1.4 µm pixels compared to 1.22 µm on last year’s iPhone X.

Now a teardown performed by TechInsights has confirmed the new sensor, but has also revealed some additional detail about the wide-angle camera. The sensor is a stacked model provided by Sony and measures 7.01 mm x 5.79 mm (40.6 mm2). This is 7.8 mm2 more than the wide-angle camera sensor on the iPhones X and 8 Plus.

TechInsights engineers noticed an increased density of Focus Pixels

In addition, the TechInsights engineers noticed an increased density of Focus Pixels. This means more regions of the sensor are available as autofocus points and should, at least in theory, improve autofocus performance in most light conditions and shooting situations. Focus Pixels is an Apple term for masked PDAF pixels which were first introduced in 2014 with the iPhone 6.

TechInsight’s teardown is still in progress, so we hope the team can provide some more information and also have a closer look at the camera’s 2x tele-module, which on paper looks unchanged from last year, over the coming days.

Fujifilm X-T3 makes waves with a 26MP X-Trans sensor and 4K/60p video

Fujifilm isn’t being conservative with its new X-T3 enthusiast mirrorless camera. Rather, the company is swinging for the fences, producing a camera with a brand new 26MP BSI X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor that can shoot at up to 30 fps (in crop mode) and capture 4K/60p video. The T3’s X-Processor 4 is three times faster than the chip on current X-series models. The camera also has a native base ISO of 160, down from 200 on the X-T2. All of Fujifilm’s Film Simulation modes are here, including Acros, Classic Chrome and Eterna.

The autofocus system is a big improvement over previous X-series models

Design-wise, the X-T3 looks a whole lot like its immediate predecessor. You’ve got your weather-sealed body with analog dials, unique dual-axis articulating LCD and good-sized electronic viewfinder. Both the LCD and EVF have been enhanced, with the former becoming touch-enabled and the latter getting a resolution boost to 3.69 million dots. The EVF has a 100 fps refresh rate when the camera is in ‘boost mode,’ which no longer requires the optional battery grip for maximum performance. The EVF diopter is now lockable, and the camera’s various dials and buttons are larger and have a more pronounced ‘press feel’.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the X-T3 is just how much effort Fujifilm has put into making the X-T3 a serious video camera

The autofocus system is a big improvement over previous X-series models, with 2.1 million phase detection pixels providing nearly 100% coverage. The system checks focus and metering 1.5x faster than the X-T2 and is capable of focusing in light levels as low as -3EV. Face and eye detection have been improved, with the latter now available in AF-C mode. Fujifilm has also added a ‘Digital Microprism’ focusing aid, simulating the view through an old-school film SLR finder.

At full resolution the camera can fire away at 20 fps with the electronic shutter or 11 fps with the mechanical shutter. Putting the camera into ‘Sports Finder’ boosts the top burst rate to 30 fps with a 1.25x crop. Bright lines in the viewfinder show the cropped-in area. An available pre-capture option continuously buffers images and saves the images taken immediately before and after you press the shutter release. The X-T3’s battery life is rated at 390 shots per charge, which is above average for a mirrorless camera. The optional battery grip allows the camera to use three NP-W126S packs, with seamless switching between them.

The X-T3 can record F-Log footage with HLG support coming later in 2018.

Perhaps the biggest surprise on the X-T3 is just how much effort Fujifilm has put into making the X-T3 a serious video camera. Not only can it capture 4K/60p video (DCI and UHD): it can also output 10-bit 4:2:2 to an external recorder or capture 10-bit 4:2:0 internally (using the H.265 codec). The readout rate of the sensor has been increased to reduce rolling shutter, and new noise reduction algorithms have been added.

The X-T3 can record F-Log footage (with a minimum ISO of 640), with HLG support coming later in 2018. The camera has mic and headphone sockets, along with HDMI and USB-C, and the door over all of those can be removed for when the camera is on a rig.

The X-T3 will be available starting September 20th in black and silver for $ 1,499.95 body-only, or as a kit with the XF 18-55mm for $ 1,899.95.

Fourth Generation X-Trans CMOS 4 and X-Processor 4 for Improved Resolving Performance, Color Reproducibility, and Faster Processing

Featuring the latest, fourth generation 26.1MP X-Trans CMOS 4 APS-C sensor with no optical low-pass filter, the FUJIFILM X-T3 boasts the highest performance in the history of X Series. Utilizing the unique color filter array of X-Trans CMOS sensors to control moiré and false colors, it is the first APS-C back-illuminated structure sensor with phase detection pixels distributed across the surface to improve image resolution without compromising signal to noise ratio. With the X-T3, ISO160 is now part of the standard ISO range, previously this was only available as extended ISO, perfect for use in bright scenes or when trying to shoot wide open with a fast, large-aperture lens.

The new X-T3 debuts the X-Processor 4 processor which features a Quad Core CPU to achieve a processing speed 3 times faster than current X Series models. Providing incredible AF accuracy and speed, the processor is also the first to deliver 4K/60P 10bit output, fulfilling the performance needs of professional videographers. It is also capable of implementing complex image processing tasks in an instant, such as the unique FUJIFILM Color Chrome Effect or Monochrome Adjustment function.

The new FUJIFILM X-T3 features the Color Chrome Effect, previously limited to the FUJIFILM GFX 50S medium format mirrorless digital camera, which produces enhanced color gradation in highly saturated colors such as vivid-colored flowers with shadows, a notoriously difficult subject to reproduce. With the high-speed processing power of the X-Processor 4, this effect can be applied not only to a single shot but also during continuous shooting.

Exceptional Autofocus and Viewfinder Performance

With the X-T3, AF performance receives a dramatic improvement from previous X Series products, increasing the phase detection AF area to the entire frame with 2.16M phase detection pixels providing fast and accurate phase detection AF. The low-light phase detection AF limit has been increased over the X-T2 by 2 stops, from -1EV to -3EV, making it possible for photographers to accurately focus in low light conditions, perfect for night photography.

Furthermore, the X-Processor 4’s high processing speed and excellent phase detection algorithm means the camera refocuses (AF) and meters (AE) 1.5 times more frequently than the X-T2, enabling accurate autofocus even when photographing subjects that change speed and move erratically across the frame, such as sports photography. The performance of Face Detection AF has also been improved. Eye Detection AF now supports the AF-C mode to maintain accurate focus tracking. Face and Eye Detection AF is also available during video recording to achieve smooth filming of subjects.

The X-T3 offers photographers incredible viewfinder performance, with the ability to now track a moving subject in the 3.69-million-dot high resolution EVF with a magnification ratio of 0.75x. Further the X-T3, allows continuous shooting of 11fps with the mechanical shutter without the optional vertical battery grip, enabling fast continuous shooting while maintaining a low weight.

Additional enhancements to the X-T3 include a display time lag of just 0.005 seconds and a EVF refresh rate of 100fps for smooth display of moving subject or when panning the camera. A new sports finder mode for enhanced capture of moving subjects is especially useful for sports and wildlife photography, and a new pre-shoot function, which allows photographers to start shooting as soon as the shutter button is half-pressed to ensure the moment is never missed.

Enhanced Video Performance to Meet the Needs of Professionals

The X-T3 is the first mirrorless digital camera capable of internal SD card 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit recording and the first mirrorless digital camera with APS-C or larger sensor that is capable of 4K/60P 4:2:2 10bit HDMI output. Supported video formats include the widely-used H.264/MPEG-4 AVC as well as H.265/HEVC for greater data compression, which enables internal recording of 4K/60P 4:2:0 10bit at200Mbps bitrate as well as simultaneous HDMI output. The X-T3 sensor’s read speed has been increased from that of the X-T2, enabling17msec reading in 4K/60P video, reducing rolling shutter distortion for smooth recording of fast-moving subjects. 10bit color depth for video boosts the amount of color information 64 times compared to 8bit, and is combined with approximately. 12 stops dynamic range to enable capture of subjects with rich gradation of color.

Also introduced in the X-T3 is a new noise reduction algorithm and 4K inter-frame noise reduction, the minimum sensitivity for shooting F-Log footage has been lowered from ISO800 to ISO640, further enhancing the camera’s performance to meet the needs of videographers.

Designed for Ultimate Operability

Inheriting the popular design of the X-T2, dials are positioned on the top panel, and the camera features a central viewfinder and excellent grip design for stability and comfort. The X-T3 also incorporates enhancements to its design, including a lockable EVF diopter adjustment to prevent unintended adjustments while carrying the camera, and a touchscreen panel with higher contrast, wider viewing angles and better functionality for more intuitive operation. In addition, the X-T3 offers larger top-panel dials than the X-T2, and larger rear-panel buttons and a more pronounced press function of the front and rear command dials, as found on the X-H1.

X-T3 Vertical Battery Grip

The Vertical Battery Grip VG-XT3 is designed to be dust-resistant, weather-resistant and capable of operating at temperatures as low as -10°C/14° F, and holds two additional batteries to increase the maximum number of shots to 1,100 (in normal mode). The grip features a shutter release button, focus lever, AE-L button, AF-L button, front and rear command dials, Q button and Fn button to provide the same level of excellent operability with vertical shooting as with horizontal.

The MHG-XT3 Metal Hand Grip makes it substantially more comfortable to hold the camera when it is mounted with a large-aperture lens, in order to reduce camera shake. Nikon’s Z 7 mirrorless camera has full-frame 45MP sensor, in-body image stabilization and hybrid AF

After years of speculation and a month of teasers, Nikon has lifted the curtain on its new Z-series full-frame mirrorless system. The system will initially comprise two bodies – the flagship Z 7 and midrange Z 6 – alongside three lenses and an F-mount adapter. The Z 7 and Z 6 are physically almost identical, with the main differences being internal: pixel count, number of autofocus points and maximum burst rate.

The Z 7 is a 45.7MP camera with built-in 5-axis image stabilization. It can shoot at up to 9 frames per second and capture 4K video or output a 10-bit 4:2:2 Log video stream over HDMI.

The Z-mount is the largest full-frame mirrorless mount on the market with a diameter of 55mm, allowing it to support lenses as fast as F0.95. The flange distance is just 16mm, the shortest of any full-frame mirrorless system. The Z-mount has a 65% smaller flange and 17% larger diameter than the legacy F-mount, which, fundamentally, has remained more or less unchanged since the 1950s.

The Z 7 is the flagship model and has a lot in common with the D850, both in terms of core features and price. It features a Nikon-designed 45.7 BSI-CMOS sensor, 5-axis in-body image stabilization and a hybrid autofocus system with 493 phase-detect points.

The magnesium alloy body is fully weather-sealed to the same level as the D850. It features an ultra-high-resolution electronic viewfinder with 3.6 million dots and 0.8x magnification, along with a 3.2″ 2.1M-dot tilting touchscreen display on the rear of the camera. On the top plate is an OLED display showing current camera settings. The Z 7 has a single XQD slot, which will support CFexpress via a firmware upgrade in the near future.

The camera’s in-body Vibration Reduction system can reduce shake by up to 5 stops and, when used with the optional F-mount adapter, provides 5-axis stabilization for VR-equipped lenses and 3-axis for those without VR.

The autofocus system features 493 PDAF points with 90% vertical and horizontal coverage. While the camera can detect faces, it lacks an equivalent to Sony’s useful Eye AF. Naturally, the Z 7 offers subject tracking (though it doesn’t behave in the same way as the 3D Tracking system that we enjoy in Nikon’s DSLRs) and it’s sensitive down to -3EV on lenses with apertures of F2 and faster.

The Z 7 can shoot bursts at 9 fps with full autofocus but with exposure locked on the first shot, or at 5.5 fps with with continuous exposure and focus. The Z 7’s buffer fills up after about 18 14-bit compressed and 23 12-bit lossless compressed Raws. Battery life is rated at 330 shots per charge (CIPA) and a battery grip will be available in the future.

Video features are plentiful. The camera captures UHD 4K video at 30p and 24p using the full width of the sensor. When using a Super 35/DX crop of 1.5x, the camera uses all the pixels in that region to produce its video. There are 435 phase-detect points available when capturing video, with both in-body and electronic VR available to reduce shake.

The Z 7 supports 10-bit N-LOG (4:2:2) when output over HDMI as well as the ability to simultaneously output video (8-bit 4:2:0) while recording to the memory card. There’s also live focus peaking, zebra stripes, adjustable AF tracking speeds, time code while in 4K mode.

The Z 7 uses the latest version of the company’s SnapBridge wireless system, which includes 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Users can transfer JPEGs and Raws direct to a PC and, of course, remotely control the camera from a smartphone. The currently available WT-7A wireless transmitter set is also compatible, allowing Wi-Fi transfer outside the SnapBridge system.

The Nikon Z 7 will be available body-only for $ 3399 or bundled with the 24-70mm F4 S lens for $ 3999 when it ships in late September.

Mirrorless Reinvented

The new Nikon Z mount system is comprised of mirrorless cameras and compatible NIKKOR Z lenses and accessories. This system has been realized through the pursuit of a new dimension in optical performance. It has inherited Nikon’s tradition of quality, superior imaging technology, intuitive operability and high reliability, all innovated from its digital SLR cameras.

At the heart of the Z mount system is the new, larger-diameter mount, which unlocks further possibilities of lens design. Additionally, the new mount adapter will enable compatibility with NIKKOR F mount lenses, adding to the range of choices for photographers.

Z 7, Z 6 Product Overview

The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with a new backside illumination Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with built-in focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, and the latest image-processing engine, EXPEED 6.

The high-resolution Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports a standard sensitivity range of ISO 64–25600. In combination with NIKKOR Z lenses, the camera achieves an outstanding level of sharpness and detail, all the way to the edges of the image.

The versatile Z 6 is an all-purpose FX-format camera with 24.5 effective megapixels, and supports the wide sensitivity range of ISO 100–51200. With superior performance at high ISO sensitivities and full-frame 4K UHD video capture with full pixel readout, the Z 6 responds to a variety of needs, such as shooting in dimly lit environments and high-quality movie recording.

These two models combine legendary Nikon reliability and a familiar interface with the benefits of a mirrorless, including rapid FPS, hybrid AF, silent shooting and advanced multimedia capabilities.

Primary Features of the Z 7 and Z 6

  1. Equipped with a new backside illumination Nikon FX-format CMOS sensor with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels

A backside illumination CMOS sensor without an Optical Low Pass Filter, with focal-plane phase-detection AF pixels, has been adopted for both the Z 7 and the Z 6. The Z 7 has 45.7 effective megapixels, and supports ISO 64–25600 range of standard sensitivities (reduction to the equivalent of ISO 32 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 102400 is also possible). The Z 6 has an effective pixel count of 24.5 megapixels, and supports a broad range of standard sensitivities, from ISO 100–51200 (additional reduction to the equivalent of ISO 50 and expansion to the equivalent of ISO 204800).

  1. A fast and accurate hybrid AF system with focus points covering approximately 90% of the imaging area

The Z 7 has 493 focus points2 and the Z 6 has 273 focus points2, enabling broad coverage of approximately 90% of the imaging area both horizontally and vertically. This hybrid AF system uses an algorithm optimized for the FX-format sensor, to automatically switches between focal-plane phase-detection AF and contrast-detect AF when focusing to achieve focus. Newly-designed NIKKOR Z lenses take full advantage of this system, providing faster, quieter and with increased AF accuracy than previously possible for both still images and videos.

  1. The new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine for sharp and clear imaging, and new functions that support creativity

The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with the new EXPEED 6 image-processing engine. Employing the superior resolving power of NIKKOR Z and NIKKOR F mount lenses, subjects are rendered more sharply than ever before. Noise is also effectively reduced.

Additionally, a mid-range sharpening option has been added to Picture Control sharpness parameters. This option, along with existing sharpening and clarity parameters, allows users to make various textures within the screen sharper or softer, for both still images and video3. The cameras also offer 20 options of Creative Picture Control, supporting creative imaging expression. The effect level is adjustable from 0 to 100.

  1. An electronic viewfinder that utilizes Nikon’s superior optical and image-processing technologies to offer a clear and natural view

The electronic viewfinder adopted for the Z 7 and Z 6 is comfortable and easy to use, comparable to optical viewfinders. Both cameras are equipped with an electronic viewfinder for which an approximately 3690k-dot OLED panel has been adopted. The electronic viewfinder has frame coverage and magnification of approximately 100% and 0.8×, respectively, as well as an approximately 37.0° diagonal viewing angle. It draws on Nikon’s superior optical technologies and image-processing technologies, ensuring a clear and comfortable view, with reduced aberration and minimum eyestrain, even during extended shoots. Furthermore, a fluorine coat that effectively repels dirt has been applied to the eyepiece protection window. In addition, the <i> menu can be displayed in the electronic viewfinder, allowing users to quickly view and adjust a variety of shooting settings, including ISO sensitivity, AF-area mode, and Picture Control, all while looking through the viewfinder.

  1. An ergonomic design unique to Nikon that enables intuitive and familiar operation

The Z 7 and Z 6 have inherited the superior operability that Nikon has cultivated over the years through its development of cameras. The bodies are compact, while boasting a firm grip that is easy to hold, and the sub-selector and buttons such as AF-ON, ISO, and exposure compensation are all placed so that they can be operated swiftly and easily. Additionally, a display panel has been placed on the top plate of the camera, where information about settings can be displayed, similar to high-end digital SLR camera models.

  1. Video functions such as 10-bit N-Log that enables wide dynamic range, and timecoding that respond to professional needs

The Z 7 and Z 6 support recording of not only full-frame 4K UHD (3840 × 2160)/30p movies using the FX-based video format, but also Full-HD/120p movies. Sharper 4K UHD movies are made possible, using the full-pixel readout4. Additionally, Active D-Lighting, electronic vibration reduction, and focus peaking can be used with 4K UHD and Full-HD movie recording. Nikon’s original N-Log color profile can also be used with 10-bit5 HDMI output. The N-Log setting utilizes extensive color depth and twelve-stop, 1,300% dynamic range to record a wealth of tone information from highlights and shadows for more effective color grading. Timecode support makes synchronizing video and sound from multiple devices easier. Additionally, the control ring built into NIKKOR Z lenses can be used to quietly and smoothly adjust settings such as aperture and exposure compensation.

  1. Nikon’s first6 in-camera vibration reduction with approx. 5.0-stop7 effectiveness

The Z 7 and Z 6 are equipped with in-camera vibration reduction (VR). The VR unit provides compensation for movement along five axes. The effects of vibration reduction are equivalent to a shutter speed up to approximately 5.0 stops6. This function can also be used effectively with NIKKOR F lenses, including those not equipped with a VR function, with the Mount Adapter FTZ (sold separately)8.

It will provide the same level of dust and drip resistance as the Z 7 and Z 6, and will support USB charging using the EH-7P Charging AC Adapter. Much-anticipated Panasonic DC-LX100 II features 17MP multi-aspect sensor

Panasonic has finally replaced its venerable LX100 enthusiast compact with the new DC-LX100 II. The big change here is the 17 megapixel multi-aspect Four Thirds sensor, up from 12.8MP on the original model. The higher-res sensor, borrowed from the GX9, and new image processor produce improved fine detail capture and better color rendition, according to Panasonic.

The LX100 II has the same (excellent) 24-75mm equivalent F1.7-2.8 lens, which features five aspherical and two ED elements, a minimum focus distance of 3cm (1.2″) and a leaf shutter. The design of the camera is almost identical, save for a ‘grippier’ grip and additional custom buttons. The LX100 II continues to offer the analog controls that made its predecessor so appealing. There are dials for exposure compensation and shutter speed, plus aperture and custom control rings. A switch on top of the lens barrel lets you quickly toggle between 1:1, 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9 aspect ratios. The field-of-view is maintained at the last three of those aspect ratios, a hallmark feature of Panasonic’s LX-series cameras.

The LCD resolution has been bumped to 1.24 million dots and the display is fully touch-enabled, as well. The 2.76M-dot equivalent field sequential electronic viewfinder is unchanged. Users will find that the menu system has been updated to match Panasonic’s latest cameras.

The buffer on the camera has been increased, allowing for up to 33 Raw images to be captured at 11 fps (5.5 fps with C-AF). Two of Panasonic’s latest Picture Styles have also been added: L. Monochrome and the high contrast L. Monochrome D. A ‘grain effect’ mode can be applied to either of those modes for a film-like effect.

The 4K Photo feature has been enhanced, with support for Post Focus, Focus Stacking and Sequence Composition. Bluetooth has also been added, allowing for remote wake-up, auto transfer and a simple remote shutter release. Panasonic also added the ability to charge the camera over USB to the LX100 II.

LUMIX LX100 II: New 17-Megapixel Multi Aspect 4/3-type (inch) Sensor

Featuring F1.7 LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX Lens and 4K Video

Newark, NJ (August 22, 2018) – Panasonic is proud to introduce the LUMIX LX100 II with a large, 4/3-inch High Sensitivity MOS Sensor for the seventh generation model of Panasonic’s world-renowned LX high-end compact camera series.

The LUMIX LX100 II newly integrates a total 21.77-megapixel sensor to achieve an effective 17.0 megapixels in 4:3 aspect ratio. Even the finest details can be precisely captured with the increased resolution of this new sensor. Together with a high-speed, high-performance Venus Engine image processor, it achieves superb image quality with natural, true-to-life description.

The included LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens (35mm camera equivalent: 24-75mm) boasts a high-speed of F1.7-F2.8, and high descriptiveness in detail and resolution corner-to-corner. And, together with the large MOS Sensor, the lens also produces a stunningly beautiful defocus. At the same time, a nine-blade aperture diaphragm helps produce bokeh with smooth, circular shapes. The versatile zoom range of 24-75mm (35mm camera equivalent) is ideal for wide-ranging photography from snapshots to portraits. Notably, landscapes can be captured in dynamic 24mm ultra-wide angle in any of 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 aspect ratios, thanks to the multi-aspect capability. An aperture ring allows direct, intuitive aperture control to take maximum advantage of this high-speed lens. A minimum working distance of 3cm is all that is required to take stunning macro shots with intricate detail.

The LUMIX LX100 II integrates an LVF (Live View Finder) with approximately 2760K-dot equivalent resolution and approximately 100percent color reproduction. This 16:9 Wide Screen LVF boasts approximately 1.39x / 0.7x (35mm camera equivalent) magnification and 100percent field of view. The new 3.0-type (inch) rear monitor increases resolution to approximately 1240K-dot, enabling touch control. A variety of advanced functions are featured on the LUMIX LX100 II to inspire and accommodate the potential of advanced photographers. It allows direct, intuitive control with dedicated rings and dials, such as an aperture ring, control ring, shutter speed dial and exposure compensation dial.

The LUMIX LX100 II capably records smooth, high-resolution 4K video in 3840×2160 at 30p or 24p in MP4. Taking full advantage of 4K technology, users can capture fleeting photo opportunities at 30 fps in 8-megapixel equivalent resolution to save as a 4K PHOTO. Auto Marking, Sequence Composition, Post Focus, Focus Stacking and Light Composition are newly added to make 4K PHOTO even easier to use in more creative ways.

The LUMIX LX100 II is also superior in response. With DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology, accuracy and speed are improved to achieve Light Speed AF of approx. 0.10 sec* to capture fleeting photo opportunities. High-speed burst shooting is possible at 11 fps in full resolution.

For more creative freedom, Filter, Creative Panorama and Photo Style are available. L.Monochrome and L.Monochrome D mode are also added to Photo Style, making it possible to shoot dynamic monochrome photos with emphasized highlights and shadows while preserving the details. Plus, grain effect can now be adjusted in all monochrome modes in Photo Style. Other practical functions include Focus Peaking, Level Gauge, Aperture bracket, Focus bracket, WB (white balance) bracket and highlight/shadow control. The LUMIX LX100 II can also develop RAW images into JPEG in-camera.

The LUMIX LX100 II includes Bluetooth® and Wi-Fi® connectivity to offer a more flexible shooting experience and instant image sharing with easy operation. Bluetooth 4.2 (called BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy) compatibility enables constant connection with a smartphone or tablet with minimum power consumption. It also complies with convenient USB/AC power charging.

It boasts multiple aspect ratios (4:3/3:2/16:9) and the effective area in the 4:3 aspect ratio is 17.0-megapixel*, which is more than approx. 1.6x larger than that of a 1-inch sensor. This new high-resolution MOS Sensor maintains an excellent S/N ratio for a dramatic reduction in noise, even when shooting at a high ISO setting at max. ISO 25600 corner-to-corner reproduces the finest details, and an impressive defocus with a shallow depth of field from wide to tele-end, making the subject stand out.

The Venus Engine renders vibrant, high-quality, true-to-life images with excellent resolution, high contrast and impressive color reproduction. The advanced Multi-process NR (Noise Reduction) applies effective noise reduction and detail processing according to each component frequency. Plus, Random Filter granulates chromatic noise to blend into the image even more naturally. As a result, the maximum ISO 25600 (Extended) is achieved. A sharpening engine controls over wider frequency range by adjusting the amount of sharpness according to the frequency level, resulting in a faithful stereoscopic effect. The Venus Engine also excels in color reproduction with accurate evaluation of each color, similar in color phase, i saturation, and luminosity. With its 1728-zone metering, more precise WB adjustment and natural image rendering are available.

The combination of the High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and the Venus Engine achieves stunning picture quality that rivals that of DSLRs.

The LUMIX LX100 II incorporates a LEICA DC VARIO-SUMMILUX lens system (F1.7-F2.8), providing 3.1x optical zoom (35mm camera equivalent: 24-75mm) with POWER O.I.S.(Optical Image Stabilizer). Comprising 11 elements in eight groups, including two ED lenses and five aspherical lenses with eight aspherical surfaces, this advanced lens unit achieves remarkably high contrast and resolution. The lens unit boasts F2.8 high speed, even at the tele-end, allowing handheld shooting in low-lit situations or adding beautifully defocused background on both photo and video. To achieve further downsizing to fit the large 4/3-inch sensor in the camera body, every lens group is now designed to move while Panasonic’s original centering technology is applied to the lens alignment to enhance sharpness. Adoption of five aspherical glass lenses and optical design optimization achieve beautiful, evenly smooth defocus with an invisible edge line; the “onion ring effect” is suppressed by Panasonic’s unique aspherical lens mold technology. In addition, a nine- aperture diaphragm helps produce bokeh with smooth, circular shapes.

The versatile zoom range of 24-75mm (35mm camera equivalent) is suitable for wide-ranging photography from snap to portrait. Notably, landscapes can be captured in dynamic 24mm ultra-wide angle in any of 4:3, 3:2 or 16:9 aspect thanks to the multi-aspect capability. The aspect can be set quickly with the aspect switch on the lens barrel. A Multi-Aspect Bracket allows shooting still images in 4:3, 3:2, 16:9 and 1:1 aspect ratios simultaneously with a single shutter release.

Stunning macro shots can be shot with minimum working distance of 3cm (wide) and 30cm (tele) to describe the detail of the subject, despite its large-sized sensor. It also complies with maximum 1/4000 (mechanical) and 1/16000 (electronic) high shutter speed.

The LUMIX LX100 II integrates a LVF (Live View Finder) with 2764K-dot equivalent high resolution and approximately 100percent color reproduction. This 16:9 Wide Screen LVF boasts approximately 1.39x / 0.7x (35mm camera equivalent.) magnification and 100percent field-of-view. It comes with the Eye Sensor that automatically turns ON/OFF according to the photographer’s action. The Eye Sensor AF starts auto focusing immediately when the photographer looks into the LVF to prevent missing the shooting opportunity. The image output between the LVF and the rear monitor is switched automatically with the eye sensor on the LVF, which features options of sensitivity – high, low and off – to reduce false operation caused by touching the rear monitor.

The LUMIX LX100 II is equipped with a variety of advanced functions to spur potential of advanced photographers. It allows direct, intuitive control with dedicated rings and dials, such as aperture ring, control ring, shutter speed dial or exposure compensation dial. For example, controls including manual focus, zoom and step zoom can be operated with the control ring. An ergonomically designed synthetic leather grip ensures a stable hold.

The new 3.0-type (inch) large rear monitor increases resolution to approximately 1240K-dot, enabling touch control. Direct operation is made possible with Touch AF or Touch Pad AF while enhancing the operability of 4K PHOTO.

DFD (Depth from Defocus) technology calculates the distance to the subject by evaluating two images with different sharpness levels, while consulting the data of optical characteristics of the current lens in a moment. As a result, the LUMIX LX100 II achieves high-speed AF of approximately 0.10 sec* and high-speed burst shooting at 11 fps (AFS) / 5.5 fps (AFC) to capture fast-moving subject just in-focus. The LUMIX LX100 II integrates Starlight AF to allow users to shoot a star in the sky at night with auto focus. This can be achieved by accurate calculation of contrast value in a smaller AF zone.

With its high-speed signal readout of the sensor and engine processing, the LUMIX LX100 II records smooth, high-resolution 4K videos in 3840×2160 resolution at 30p or 24p.

Taking full advantage of 4K technology, users can enjoy 4K PHOTO to capture fleeting photo opportunities at 30 fps in eight-megapixel equivalent resolution by extracting a frame of the most photogenic timing out of the 4K burst file to save as a photo. Three exclusive functions are integrated into the LUMIX LX100 II to make 4K photography even easier: 4K Burst Shooting, 4K Burst (Start/Stop) and 4K Pre-burst. The 4K Burst shooting allows consecutive shooting at 30 fps*1, which can be used just like photo burst shooting. Users can also choose either 4:3, 3:2 or 1:1 in addition to 16:9 with the aspect switch.

Choosing the best shot out of hundreds of frames recorded with 4K PHOTO is now easier with the newly-added Auto Marking function. It lets users jump to the nearest frame where differences are obvious between consecutive frames to minimize the time it takes to choose the best shot. With Sequence Composition, it is possible to make a stromotion image by synthesizing multiple images shot at a fixed frame with 4K PHOTO. A unique image reflecting the subject’s motion can be easily produced in-camera without a special retouching process.

The LUMIX LX100 II also comes with a Post Focus function to select the in-focus area even after shooting. This is particularly helpful in situations like macro shooting, where strict focusing is required or for changing expressions by changing the focused subject. This function was developed by combining the high-speed, high-precision DFD (Depth from Defocus) auto-focus technology and 4K technology. The Focus Stacking function enables users to adjust the depth of field after shooting by combining multiple images shot with the Post Focus function in the camera. Users do not need to focus strictly while shooting as they can obtain the image with the defocus level they want or pan-focus the image by simply selecting the focus area after shooting. This is beneficial when shooting macro shots of insects, small accessories and similar subjects

In addition, the LUMIX LX100 II incorporates Light Composition function as a new option of 4K PHOTO mode. The camera synthesizes images by choosing and saving a brighter pixel. This makes it possible to produce more luxurious, dramatic images of situations such as fireworks or night scenery in-camera with ease.

Xperia XZ3 likely to come with Sony’s new 48MP Quad-Bayer sensor

Only a few days ago Sony announced its latest smartphone sensor, a 1/2″ stacked 48MP beast with Quad-Bayer design for improved low light performance at 12MP output size. And if rumors turn out to be true, we won’t have to wait long before the chip is available in a production smartphone.

Renders of the upcoming Sony Xperia XZ3 flagship smartphone that are floating around the internet show the new device with just one rear camera, as distinct from the dual-camera setup used by the Xperia XZ2 Premium.

This one-camera design has been confirmed by a benchmark listing, showing only one rear camera sensor with a 47MP output size. As those benchmark listings are created using pre-production models some of the specifications could still change before the launch but it’s highly likely we are looking at Sony’s new IMX586 sensor here.

We’ll know more on August 30 when the Xperia XZ3 will be officially launched at IFA and we’re looking forward to evaluating camera performance when the device is available for testing.

Sony IMX586 smartphone sensor comes with 48MP and Quad Bayer design

Sony has introduced a new smartphone image sensor today and, looking at the IMX586’s impressive spec sheet, the new chip could help boost smartphone camera performance further in the next generation of high-end devices.

The sensor combines two key technologies: very high resolution and a ‘Quad Bayer’ color filter pattern to offer a series of clever processing modes.

According to Sony, low light performance is comparable to large 1.6?m pixels

With its 1/2″ format (6.4 x 4.8 mm) the stacked sensor is at the large end of the spectrum for smartphone cameras: nearly twice the size of a typical 1/3″-type chip. This allows it to squeeze 48MP onto its surface, but still requites a comparatively small pixel size of 0.8 ?m.

The IMX586 is not just about pixel count, however. It comes with a Quad Bayer color filter array in which every 2×2 pixel array has the same color filter. This allows it to offer several ways to process its data, depending on the conditions.

In low light image data from the four pixels in such an array is merged and processed as one single pixel, resulting in a reduced 12MP image resolution. According to Sony, low light performance is comparable to large 1.6?m pixels.

In bright light the image signal processor can make full use of the sensor’s 48MP pixel count, however, and capture high-resolution images or use the abundance of captured image data for high-quality digital zooming. This requires processing to convert the ‘Quad Bayer’ data into an approximation of what a 48MP Bayer sensor would have captured. It’ll be interesting to see how well this does.

Sony’s write-up seems to allude to a third way of using the data. It talks about the sensor being able to display up to four times the dynamic range of conventional products. We suspect this uses the system Sony uses on its IMX294 chip, where alternate pixels are switched off, mid exposure, protecting highlight capture while still recording full shadow detail. The Quad Bayer pattern would lend itself particularly well to this.

This three-mode approach… may remind some readers of Fujifilm’s Super CCD EXR technology

This three-mode approach to offering better performance in low light, higher DR in high contrast situations or high resolution when there’s plenty of light may remind some readers of Fujifilm’s Super CCD EXR technology, with which there are some obvious parallels.

As usual we don’t know when the new sensor will see the light of day in a production smartphone, but the Sony Xperia XZ3 which is expected to be launched at IFA in September looks like a good candidate. Given Sony is the biggest sensor provider to the smartphone industry we should sooner or later see the IMX586 in non-Sony smartphones as well.

Canon teases CMOS sensor nearly 40 times larger than a 35mm full-frame sensor

In 2010, Canon revealed that it was developing the world’s largest CMOS sensor, one measuring about 40 times larger than a full-frame CMOS sensor. The company has now added more details about the project to its website, including a discussion of a real-world application.

Whereas a 35mm full-frame sensor measures 36 x 24mm, Canon’s massive chip measures about 200 x 200mm. Canon gives a little detail about some of the challenges presented by such a large sensor and how it overcame them, saying in part:

Increasing the size of CMOS sensors entails overcoming such problems as distortion and transmission delays for the electrical signals converted from light. To resolve these issues, Canon not only made use of a parallel processing circuit, but also exercised ingenuity with the transfer method itself.

Overcoming this problem allowed comparatively fast readout of the sensor’s huge pixels, allowing it to capture video at 60fps in conditions as dark as 0.3 lux, which is about as bright as a night scene illuminated by the moon.

The company says the sensor has already been used by Japan’s Kiso Observatory to capture the first ever video of meteors that otherwise would have been too faint to record. This allowed analysis of the meteor frequency, providing supporting evidence for a theoretical model of meteor behavior.

Canon also suggests the ultrahigh-sensitivity sensor could be used for various other applications requiring video in extreme low-light conditions, such as studying the behavior of nocturnal animals or shooting video of aurora.

Nikon D850 sensor confirmed as Sony-made

It can be interesting, for the more tech-inclined photographer, to speculate about where camera makers are getting their sensors from. However, to be truly certain, you’d need to tear the camera apart and see what’s printed around the edge of the chip.

ChipMod – a camera modification company – has done just that, and has posted its findings on the AstroCN forum, showing that the D850’s sensor has a Sony product code stamped on the back of it.

This will come as no surprise to anyone who’s been curious about the issue: DPReview forum user Bobn2 (a computer science professor whose areas of expertise include imaging) pointed out immediately that all the published images of the chip showed a wiring pattern consistent with previous Sony designs. The sensor’s performance then revealed it to have a dual-gain design that’s been a feature of recent Sony chips (something we believe was licensed from Aptina, making Sony one of the only companies able to offer it).

Nikon’s D850 is one of the most capable DSLRs on the market, boasting class-leading image quality from its 46MP full-frame sensor.

However, claims by Israeli chipmaker TowerJazz that it supplies to “a DSLR manufacturer” were taken by some to be evidence that it was the source of this chip. We still don’t know which company TowerJazz was referring to, nor how precisely it were using the term ‘DSLR.’

What’s interesting, though, is that this news confirms what Sony told us about the way its semiconductor company deals with external clients: other companies can commission Sony Semiconductor to make them a sensor and can include their own intellectual property in the design, without that information (or the rights to use it) being available to Sony’s camera division. Hence the D850 features the BSI and dual gain designs that Sony uses in many of its own cameras but is also able to provide an ISO 64 mode that allows the Nikon to rival some of the latest medium format cameras, but that Sony cameras don’t offer.

This would also help explain how Nikon justifies its statements that the sensor is “designed by Nikon.”
