Photography SEO And The Power Of Local Link Building

04 Dec

For photography SEO, there is one extremely effective tactic that can get your website to the top of search engines. Link building is the process of generating links on external websites, facing your yours.

For instance, a link from DSLRBlog to your photography website, would be link building.

photography seo local link building

The best way to go about link building is by guest posting on photography websites. However, I want to talk about local link building.

Now being in such a niche category, link building for photography SEO is tricky. Commenting for links doesn’t work anymore, so what is there to do?

Photography SEO & Local Link Building

If your photography business is local based, and not a full-time traveler, then there is a really good method to try. Create a section on your website where you discuss partners, venues, etc. Reach out to venues that often host events where you are photographing. Write a very personal email explaining that you would like to partner by recommending each other to potential customers. The partnership requires an exchange in links. No money is to change hands, as it is an agreement between companies to increase business.

You can also exchange links with other photographers. If you are a New York City wedding photographer and never photograph an event in Las Vegas, then partner with a Nevada wedding photographer in the Las Vegas area and recommend him/her for potential clients.

Other local businesses you can partner with:

  • Bands
  • DJs
  • Florists
  • Bakers
  • Caterers

Local link building is not only great for photography SEO, but also for relationship building, business and it is also a lot of fun.

Do you have additional local partners you would like to see added to the list? Comment below and we will add them.

Thanks for reading,

Scott

M4: Like the Carbine, But With More Power

20 Nov

About this time last Friday I was in head-scratching mode, trying to figure out my light. Here was the challenge:

Teeny-tiny stage. Twenty three insane performers. No room to change shooting positions. Complex, low-level and fast-changing ambient.

I had been looking forward to it for weeks. Because I was getting to photograph MarchFourth, my absolute favorite band in the world. Lighting, pics and video, inside… Read more »

The Power Of Limitations

09 Nov

When photographers ask me what gear they should bring on my photo workshops, my recommendation is to keep it simple. Bring whatever you want on the trip, but bring one body and one lens on the daily photo walks.  Most will give a huge sigh of relief while others will wonder what to do with their fancy new camera strap that allows them to carry two DSLRs. This is how the power of limitations begins.

Limiting yourself to one lens to take on your photo walk, knowing you must live with that decision all day, may sound terrifying to you, but you with benefit twice: You will save your back and learn exciting new ways to see.  Naturally, your lens choice will depend on what your are planning to shoot that day. Many photographers prefer the flexibility of a zoom lens. I recommend a fixed focal length lens such as a 50mm or, if you’re a Canon shooter, the new 40mm pancake lens.  Should you decide to limit yourself to a 50mm lens for the day, you immediately increase your chances of making better pictures. Why? You will be forced to slow down and take more care in your composition. With a fixed lens your feet are your zoom. You will work the scene more carefully and pay closer attention to what you include in the frame, and more importantly, what you decide to leave out of the frame.  Result? Some interesting photographs and a great learning experience – such can be the power of limiting yourself to one lens.

When shooting street photography with a DSLR, a small lens such as a 50mm also has the advantage of making you more invisible..

Another way to slow down and improve your images is to either shoot film or pretend you are.  Set a limit to the number of frames you will shoot that day instead of using the ‘spray and pray’ approach.  Trust me – if you limit yourself to 24 or 36 exposures for one photo walk, you will make every single one of those frames count. Those of you who have shot film, you already know what I’m talking about.

In the fall of 1994 environmentalist and nature photographer Jim Brandenburg, embarked on a journey to shoot one frame a day for 90 days. Imagine that – limiting yourself to just one frame a day for 90 days!  And those were the film days. Truth be told, he was my inspiration to pursue photography as a hobby and later as a career.  To learn more about his amazing journey and get some inspiration, I encourage you to read his story in his best seller book Chased by the Light, NorthWord Press, 1998.

Setting limitations should be kept simple such as picking a theme for your photo walk.  Maybe you decided to focus on a color or to photograph only cats. Eventhough you are likely to shoot other items of interest unrelated to your goal, your focus will turn an ordinary photo walk into a treasure hunt, and isn’t that more fun? This will spice up your photo walks in your hometown and help keep you focused in a new environment where it’s easy to get overwhelmed by so much novelty or newness.

Double the fun and select one lens (here the 50mm) and pick a theme (photographing cats) and your photo walk will turn into a treasure hunt.

However, if you are a beginner or still experimenting with your camera functions, please do shoot more – even lots! These limitations will better suit you once you have some experience under your belt.  The more you shoot, the better you’ll get!  When I first picked up a camera I wish I had benefited from the luxury of shooting digital, the film days were expensive and the experimentation process was definitely slower.  Shoot your heart out in the beginning. Stay excited and keep learning. Master your camera settings and experiment with whatever lens you own. You will soon realize how the power of limitations can fine tune your craft.

Have fun!

Panasonic gives details of power zoom-enabling firmware v1.1 for GH2, G3, GF3 and GF2

30 Aug

Panasonic has provided details of a firmware update for its recent G-system cameras to provide full compatibility with the newly-announced Lumix X power zoom lenses. The firmware, which will be available at ‘the beginning of October’ will work with the DMC-GH2, G3, GF3 and GF2, and will provide several additional options for how the powered zoom is controlled. By a process of elimination, it seems reasonable to assume these are the functions that won’t be available to older G-series users (G1, GF1, GH1, G2, G10), and possibly Olympus PEN users.

Sony makes brighter/lower power ‘WhiteMagic’ LCD panel

18 Aug

Sony has developed the ‘WhiteMagic’ high-resolution LCD panel that can be brighter or consume less power than existing units. The 3.0" LCD uses an additional white ‘dot’ at every position to provide a brighter image for use in bright light. Alternatively, the unit can be used in a low power mode that offers the same brightness as conventional monitors but using half the power. The RGBW design uses 1.24M dots to produce a VGA display (640×480 pixels), rather than the 920k dots used in current (RGB VGA LCD) designs. Sony supplies LCD panels to many of the big camera makers, so it could appear in a variety of cameras. It could be particularly useful in the Mirrorless sector, where the rear screen is the primary means of composing an image and any improvements in battery life or screen brightness for outdoor use would be especially valuable. Sadly a shipping date of October is likely to mean it’s too late for any releases this side of Christmas.

The Power (and Danger) of Photoshop

20 Dec

Remember back to when you were first learning Photoshop?  You probably went through and applied different filters, maybe you tried doing a colorized-black-and-white image, maybe you created some color effects stuff like that.  Well, the idea was to experiment!  You didn’t know how things would turn out you just started TRYING things.

There is nothing wrong with this experimental stage, but at some point you need to LEAVE that stage and you need to come into your digital darkroom with a very clear idea of what you want and some basic ideas on how to get there… otherwise you’re probably just making your photos worse, not better.

I love using Photoshop as both a conceptual tool and a tool to make slight (nearly invisible) improvements, and in the case of the Samurai series I went in with a clear idea that I wanted to create a slight vide0-game reality to these images.

To show my post-processing handiwork I downloaded a Before & After plugin from Instruite that is kind of cool.  There should be a little slider that you can move back and forth to see the changes, first image is straight out of the camera.

Leave a comment and share your thoughts!
