Just posted: Our six page review of the now-less-expensive Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 4. Adobe has released and halved the price of the latest version of its workflow and image editing software, and we’ve prepared an in-depth review exploring the changes. Along with Book and Map modules, and a revised editing workflow, Lightroom 4 brings Raw file support for a number of recently announced cameras, including the Canon EOS-1D X and Nikon D4. Are the changes in Lightroom 4 worth the upgrade for current users? Find out in our detailed review.

Just Posted: Nikon D4 Studio Test Samples

04 Mar

nikon_d4.png

We’ve just published images of our standard test scene taken with Nikon’s latest professional DSLR, the 16MP D4. These have been shot using a production-standard D4 and, as usual, include both Raw and JPEG images with all original files available for download. Added them to our comparison tool means they can be called-upon from other reviews or the standalone comparison tool. For this test we used the recently-announced Nikon AF-S Nikkor 85mm f/1.8 and we’ll be publishing ‘real world’ galleries both the D4 and 85mm over the coming days.

Just Posted: Lytro Light Field Camera review and video

01 Mar

lytro_lfc16gb.png

Lytro has shipped its first Light Field Camera to a customer and we’ve had a chance to spend some time with one, to see what their experience is likely to be like. It’s a totally unconventional camera that captures images that can be refocused after they’re shot, so we haven’t shot our usual, 2D test charts but we’ve tried to sum-up its technology and what it’s like to shoot with. Click here to find out what we thought.

Just Posted: Nikon 1 V1 and J1 review

23 Jan

nikon_j1.png

Just Posted: Our review of the Nikon 1 V1 and the simpler J1. Nikon’s first foray into the mirrorless market has produced two point-and-shoot targeted small-sensor cameras, the V1 and the J1. The more expensive V1 offers an electronic viewfinder and higher-resolution screen, while the smaller J1 features built-in flash and significantly lower price tag. Nikon’s decision to use a small, 10MP sensor (with the speed benefits that can bring) caused vigorous debate when the cameras were first announced but this hasn’t stopped the company’s vast marketing effort persuding a lot of people to buy them. So, after painstaking investigation, we ask: ‘are the Nikon 1 cameras any good?’

Just Posted: Canon PowerShot G1 X samples gallery

17 Jan

G1XSamples.jpg

Just Posted: We’ve spent a couple of days shooting with a pre-production Canon PowerShot G1 X. We’ve prepared a 30 image gallery, shot in a range of lighting conditions and using a variety of focal lengths, ISO settings and apertures, in addition to the studio examples we’ve already posted. The G1 X may look like an existing G-series compact but fits a near DSLR-sized sensor into its slightly brick-like body. So what does this mean for image quality and does its f/5.8 maximum aperture at the long end of the zoom rob it of its low-light potential? Click here to judge for yourselves.

Just Posted: Olympus PEN Mini review

26 Nov

oly_epm1.png?v=1236?v=1236

We’ve just published our review of the Olympus E-PM1: the PEN Mini. The Mini is the least expensive, and most compact-camera-user orientated, Micro Four Thirds model yet released. It’s built around the long-serving 12MP sensor but includes the latest, impressively fast AF system from the most recent PENS. In keeping with its point-and-shoot ethos, the PEN Mini features few external controls, yet has extensive customization if you want a camera to grow into. Does this result in a model with broad appeal or a camera with an identity crisis? Read our review to find out.
