These Aren’t Photos: 28 Examples of Hyper Realistic Art

25 Jan

[ By Marc in Art & Drawing & Digital. ]

Hyper-Realistic-Art-Montage

Hyper realistic art is stunning for a variety of reasons: it pushes the limits of skill, it’s incredibly detailed, etc, but what really elevates the style is creating something in high definition that is even brighter and more detailed than possible in life. For the casual observer, however, it’s the dissonance between looking at something that must be a photograph, and realizing it was actually created by hand that makes it jaw-dropping.

Diego Fazio

Hyper-Realistic-Art-Diego-Fazio

Diego Fazio is an Italian artist whose careful portraiture is notable because his subjects are active. There are few things as tough to capture withe a pen or pencil as splashing water across a human subject, but Diego does it with excellent effect in Sensazioni, the piece on the left of these examples. The top right piece is Il Silenzio Del Dolore (English: The Silence of Pain), and the bottom right image is titled Come Il Vento (English: Like the Wind). According to Diego’s DeviantArt page, he began as a tattoo artist and then decided he preferred to draw bodies rather than draw on them. If there weren’t photos of Diego working on his pieces, it would be difficult to believe they were drawn by hand. Still can’t believe it? Check out the progression here, here, and here.

Dirk Dzimirsky

Hyper-Realistic-Art-Dirk-Dzimirsky

Dirk Dzimirsky is not playing around. When he wants to capture a moment, he captures every miniscule detail. One can look at Dirk’s collection here (warning, some images are NSFW). In Dirk’s artist statement, he discusses why he chooses drawing over painting. He notes that drawing allows him “to create many layers over layers of lines and dots which react to each other in order to create a vibrant texture with directions and movement” and argues that this layering makes his portraits more warm and alive than a photograph would. Picture above are four of his works. Clockwise from top left: Drawn Face VI 2009, Black Sun 2011, Frozen 2010, and Breath 2010.

Paul Cadden

Hyper-Realistic-Art-Paul-Cadden

Paul Cadden is a Scottish born hyper realist artist whose incredibly popular art is prized for its detail and subject matter. Cadden doesn’t shy away from the gritty, and uses subjects with an incredible amount of character. In describing hyper realism on his site, and how he draws based on photographs, he hits on a point that seems to be a lesson in hyper realism, that “the virtual image becomes the living image, an intensification of the normal.” All of Paul’s work can be found on his main site paulcadden.com (some of the portraits are nude, and possibly NSFW).

-obras “definitivamente inacabadas”
-rrose sélavy, su alter(-)ego
-ajedrez, máquinas ópticas, matemáticas, geometría, “artefactos”

This issue plays around the conceptual universe of Marcel Duchamp. Not his life, nor his works, just some of his concepts.

– the medium, as an intellectual tool which goes beyond its specificity mocking it.
– the work, regardless of its representative and interpretative character.
– “art”, in terms of conventions, as “amorphous” as possible.
– “construction”, in which the work is not it’s purpose, but an excuse.
– interpretations, or rather readings which can coexist despite being seemingly exclusive.
– objects “aesthetically anesthetized,” lapsed in their likely sight complacency; “rectified”, “assisted”, to give them a new –often unusual- significance. As with the choice of “ready-mades”: “based on visual indifference and a total absence of good or bad taste”
– works “definitively unfinished”.
– rrose sélavy, his alter (-) ego.
– chess, optic machines, mathematics, geometry, “artifacts”.
– “mental painting,” “precision painting”, the rejection of any element in which sight can be delighted.

– aesthetics: – text, – blocks, – photographs, + mixed-media, + painting, + illustration.
– the whole magazine, in spanish and english.

Can You Take Great Photos With An Inexpensive Digital Camera?

22 Jan

There’s a myth out there, in the real world, that says “to take great photos, you have to have a great (read expensive) camera”. This has been a subject of debate for years amongst the gear heads and elitists in the world of photography. The bottom line: it’s simply not true. Anyone, anywhere, can make solid photos with just about Continue Reading

View of Cincinnati taken from the Carnegie Arts Center, Covington, Kentucky
visual art
Image by elycefeliz
The Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center is a multidisciplinary arts venue for all ages which provides events, educational programs, and art exhibitions to the Northern Kentucky and Greater Cincinnati community. The Carnegie facility reflects its threefold nature: within its 17,000 square foot facility are The Carnegie Galleries, crowned by a landmark Beaux Arts dome; the magnificent, newly renovated Otto M. Budig Theatre; and the newer Eva G. Farris Education center. The Carnegie is the largest arts venue in Northern Kentucky.

The Carnegie was established in 1972 in a former Carnegie Library which originally was constructed in 1902. The building is on the National Register of Historic Places. Saved from the wrecking ball by local residents during the 1970s, The Carnegie has grown from a grassroots arts alliance into a major venue in the Greater Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky region. It is an Associate Member of the Fine Arts Fund and receives funding from the Kentucky Humanities Council, from local businesses and corporations, from individuals, and private foundation grants.

Located at 1028 Scott Boulevard, The Carnegie public library and adjoining auditorium were built in 1904 for a grand total of ,000 with funds given to the city of Covington by Andrew Carnegie.

The interior of the original library building is made up of two floors, connected by ornately carved dual winding staircases. A circular balcony and open rotunda overlook the main floor underneath an impressive amber glass dome.

Thoughts about Photography…..

There is a difference between looking at photographs–which has become a common cultural practice in connection with reading newspapers–or seeing the image. The latter refers to reconstructing the photograph by exploring the deep structure of the image–which involves the application of practical knowledge and creative insights and relies on the cultural or historical consciousness of the reader. Looking is the visual routine of readers, seeing is the visual practice of the literate. The professional or artistic disposition of photographers reflects a commitment to the image as an expression of ideas or feelings that are beyond words.

Elegance is the attribute of being unusually effective and simple. It is frequently used as a standard of tastefulness, particularly in the areas of visual design, decoration, the sciences, and the esthetics of mathematics. Elegant things exhibit refined grace and dignified propriety.

=====

Some associate elegance with simplicity and consistency of design, focusing on the main or basic features of an object, its dignified gracefulness, or restrained beauty of style. One may also attribute elegance to place something in an opulent light—a in tasteful richness of design or ornamentation "the sumptuous elegance of the furnishings."

=====

The proof of a mathematical theorem is considered to have mathematical elegance if it is surprisingly simple yet effective and constructive; similarly, a computer program or algorithm is elegant if it uses a small amount of intuitive code to great effect.

=====

In engineering, a solution may be considered elegant if it uses a non-obvious method to produce a solution which is highly effective and simple. An elegant solution may solve multiple problems at once, especially problems not thought to be inter-related.

=====

In chemistry, chemists always look for elegance in formulations as well as effectiveness in dosage form design.

Visual stimuli are frequently considered elegant if a small number of colors and stimuli are used, emphasizing the remainder.

=====

WIKIPEDIA = The Elegance of Simply BE and Discovery AROUND THE WORLD

=====

I am from the planet of elegance.

I really like this image. In part for its purely visual qualities. But also, and essentially, for what it depicts. You need both of them together. It’s a freight car, and a rather battered one at that. Look at the layers of paint, the layers of age. This car works hard. But it also tells of men (perhaps women, but men most likely) who like design, and like their names. Egos floridly on display on a cross-country journey. Created under the discipline of "don’t get caught or your ass is in jail." And odd macho sort of aesthetic. But real, if not ultimate. What does this car carry? Toilet tissue, flat-screen TVs? No doubt the load varies from trip to trip. As do the names, over time.

But that’s not all. In the foreground, dried grass, and a glimpse of a (scuzzy) pond. Behind, a utility pole connecting to the local grid, which connects to the regional, which connects to the national. Grid. And then there’s the sky. Odd to say it’s the background. Compositionally, that’s what it is. In reality, it’s all over.
