It seems the Chicago Sun-Times is counting on its remaining employees to become mobile photographers. After laying off its entire 28-person photography staff yesterday, the newspaper has announced mandatory training for remaining employees on ‘iPhone photography basics’. That’s according to media writer Robert Feder. Feder quotes a memo from managing editor Craig Newman: ‘In the coming days and weeks, we’ll be working with all editorial employees to train and outfit you as much as possible to produce the content we need’. 23 May

marissa_new4.jpg

Much of the fallout surrounding Flickr’s massive updates this Monday continues to center around the legacy ‘Pro’ accounts and a contentious statement from Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer: ‘There’s no such thing as Flickr Pro today because […] there’s really no such thing as professional photographers anymore.’ She apologized today for her ‘misstatement’, and it appears that existing Flickr Pro account holders will now be able to take advantage of unlimited storage. Read all about it at connect.dpreview.com.

Meet The Photographers Who Write For Digital Photography School ~ Jim Goldstein

22 Apr

You’ve been reading their articles for months or years, have you ever wondered “Who are the photographers who write for dPS”?

Today we meet Jim Goldstein.

Dusk at White Sands National Monument

1. How long have you been shooting?

I have been behind a camera perfecting the art of photography since the mid-1990′s. I honed my skills in the days of film and have been growing every day since as a photographer, digital and otherwise.

2. Do you have a full time job or are you a full time photographer?

jim_m_goldstein_headshot-sqI was a full-time professional outdoor photographer for sometime, but given my knack for social media & marketing I was recently recruited by BorrowLenses.com to help head up their marketing department.

3. If you had to limit yourself to one genre of photography, what would it be and why?

That is much easier said than done, but I would say Outdoor Photography.

4. When did you start writing for dPS and why?

I began writing for Darren the first day he opened his site to authors other than himself in early 2008. I pursued writing for DPS because I’m deeply passionate about sharing with the photography community at large. I strive to share my expertise, ideas and inspire others.

5. What do you shoot with and what’s your favorite lens?

These days I shoot with a Canon EOS 5D Mark III when ever I have the opportunity, but always have my trusty Canon 5D Mark II with me as well. My favorite lens at the moment is a Canon EF 50mm f/1.0L lens as it is the newest lens to my collection, but the bulk of my work is shot with a Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L lens.

6. What would be your number one tip to any new photographer?

Be persistent. I can’t begin to tell you how many times I was frustrated along my journey as a photographer. Very early on, when I was 15, I stopped because of it. Only after college did I return back to try again and to push my way through the learning process. Ever since I’ve embraced each challenge to push my limits and test my creativity.

7. What’s your next big project?

My next big project is a follow up to my ebook Photographing the 4th Dimension – Time.

8. Where can people go to find out more about you and your work?

People can see my photography and writing on my blog: JMG-Galleries blog, my social media pages Google+, Twitter & Facebook and my ebooks/webinars at InspiredExposure.com.

Photographer’s smartphone shot earns front page position on NYT

03 Apr

nyts-front-page-instagram-maybe-not-the-end-of-photography.png

Photographer Nick Laham found himself in a tight spot as he squeezed into a locker room bathroom stall to take portraits of the New York Yankees during a spring training session earlier this year. He used both his DSLR and his smartphone to take the photos, but it was his iPhone-captured and Instagram-processed images that earned the attention of the New York Times, which ran Laham’s portrait of baseball great Alex Rodriguez on the front page of the Sunday edition. My New Kickstarter Project: Photographer’s Social Media Mouse

01 Apr

Ever since evangelizing the importance of social media to fellow photographers in 2006, I’ve long yearned for a tool to help balance photo/video editing time with the incredibly important task of marketing myself on social media. After years of research and prototyping I’m happy to announce a new Kickstarter project to realize my dream, a mouse designed especially for photographers who are super active on social media.
I’ve titled this project the Photographers’s Social Media Mouse.

Kickstarter Project: Photographer's Social Media Mouse

How it works is quite simple. Employing Bluetooth wireless technology the Photographer’s Social Media Mouse detects when a photographer has navigated to a web browser. With in 10 seconds of detecting activity on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr, Instagram, 500px, MySpace, and Friendster a gentle yet firm 7,800,000 volt shock is applied to the finger of the user. The momentary sensation causes brief paralysis in the arm reminding the user that more important editing or business communications are the order of the day.

Additional Features

  • Designed for travel – More comfortable than a touchpad, instant-on performance for maximum productivity on the road
  • Smart power management – Long battery life, on & off switch, power-saving modes and a low-battery indicator light
  • Precision optical performance – 1000-dpi optical sensor technology for incredibly smooth, precise tracking
  • Convenient carrying case – Comes with pouch for easy storage.

Important product information: Batteries are not included, use of mouse is not recommended by left handed users to avoid direct current to the heart and avoid data loss by keeping mouse on an approved non-conductive mouse pad.

Your support is needed to make this a reality. To contribute visit my Kickstarter page.

Product Details
Product Dimensions: 8.5 x 7 x 2.5 inches
Shipping Weight: 11.2 ounces
Shipping: Currently, item can be shipped only within the U.S.

Note: The Photographer’s Social Media Mouse is restricted and cannot be shipped to CT, IL, HI, MA, MI, NJ, NY, RI, and WI. They are also restricted in Annapolis, MD; Baltimore, MD; Baltimore County, MD; Chicago, IL; Dension/Crawford County, IA; Washington DC; and Philadelphia, PA. Any orders for these areas/states will be canceled.
